  • Due to the ozone depletion and global warming potentials, some refrigerants(CFx and HCFCs) have been rapidly substituted. R410A is considered as the alternative refrigerant of R22 for the air-conditioners used a home and in industry. Experiments on the condensation heat transfer characteristics inside a smooth or a micro-fin tube with R410A are performed in this study. The test tubes 7/9.52 mm in outer diameters and 3 m in length are used. Varying the mass flux of the refrigerant and the condensation temperatures, the average heat transfer coefficients and pressure drop are investigated. It is shown that the heat transfer is enhanced and the amount of pressure drops are larger in the microfin tube than the smooth tube. From the heat transfer enhancement coefficient and the pressure penalty factor, it is found that the high heat transfer enhancement coefficients are obtained in the range of small mass flux while the penalty factors are almost equal.

  • Local heat transfer characteristics inside a hard disk driver(HDD) are investigated in this study. The investigation is considered between disks co-rotating in a cylindrical enclosure. The gap spacing, rotating speed and head-arm positions are mainly considered to understand the flow and heat transfer in the co-rotating disks. The naphthalene sublimation technique is used to determine local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the rotating disk. Flow patterns inside the co-rotating disks are investigated using a Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA) and also analyzed numerically. The results show that the heat transfer coefficients on the disk changed little with the gap spacing between disks. Heat transfer rates in the outer region increases with increasing rotating Renolds number, but the values normalized by that on a free rotating disk give a similar pattern for the tested cases. The head-arm inserted between the rotating disks destroys the inner region resulting in enhancement of heat transfer in that region.

  • This work is devoted to investigate heat and mass transfer effects on MHD natural convection flow past an inclined plate with ramped temperature numerically. The dimensionless governing equations for this investigation are solved by using finite element method. The effects of angle inclination, buoyancy ratio parameter, permeability parameter, magnetic parameter, Prandtl number, heat generation, thermal radiation, Eckert number, Schmidt number, chemical reaction parameter and time on velocity, temperature and concentration fields are studied and presented with the aid of figures. The effects of the pertinent parameters on skin friction, rate of heat transfer and mass transfer coefficients are presented in tabular form. The numerical results are compared graphically with previously published result as special case of the present investigation and results found to be in good agreement.

  • In the present experimental study, condensation heat transfer coefficients between R404A and R152a flow in a horizontal smooth tube were compared. The outer and inner diameters of the tube were 9.52 mm and 7.55 mm, respectively, and the heated length was 1045 mm. The mass flux ranged from 150 to 400 kg/m2s and the test section were uniformly heated from 8 to 12. kW/m2. The quality range was from 0.2 to 0.8 at the saturation temperature from 27.3 to 34C. Experimental condensation heat transfer coefficients increased as the quality and mass flux increased. Modified Dobson and Chato correlation reduced the mean deviation of 5.1% for R404A and 9.4% for R152a than the original correlation(2).

  • The influence of arrangement and length of discrete ribs on heat/mass transfer and friction loss is investigated. Mass transfer experiments are conducted to obtain the detailed local heat/mass transfer information on the ribbed wall. The aspect ratio (width/height) of the duct is 2.04 and the rib height is one tenth of the duct height, such that the ratio of the rib height to hydraulic diameter is 0.0743. The ratio of rib-to-rib distance to rib height is 10. The discrete ribs were made by dividing each continuous rib into 2, 3 or 5 pieces and attached periodically to the top and the bottom walls of the duct with a parallel orientation The combined effects of rib angle and length of the discrete ribs on heat/mass transfer ae considered for the rib angles (α)of90and45. As the number of the discrete ribs increases, the uniformity of the heat/mass transfer distributions increases. For (\alpha})=90^{\circ}, the heat/mass transfer enhancement with the discrete ribs is remarkable, while the heat/mass transfer performances are slightly higher than that of the transverse continuous ribs due to the accompanied high friction loss penalty. For (\alpha})=90^{\circ}, the average heat/mass transfer coefficients and the heat/mass transfer performances decrease slightly with the discrete ribs compared to the case of the angled continuous ribs.

  • The present study investigates the convective heat/mass transfer inside a cooling passage of rotating gas-turbine blades. The rotating duct has various configurations made of ribs with 70。 attack angle, which are attached on leading and trailing surfaces. A naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine detailed local heat transfer coefficients using the heat and mass transfer analogy. The present experiments employ two-surface heating conditions in the rotating duct because the surfaces, exposed to hot gas stream, are pressure and suction side surfaces in the middle passages of an actual gas-turbine blade. In the stationary conditions, the parallel rib arrangement presents higher heat/mass transfer characteristics in the first pass, however, these characteristics disappear in the second pass due to the turning effects. In the rotating conditions, the cross rib present less heat/mass transfer discrepancy between the leading and the trailing surfaces in the first pass. In the second pass, the heat/mass transfer characteristics are much more complex due to the combined effects of the angled ribs, the sharp fuming and the rotation.

  • Experimental results for heat transfer characteristics of natural refrigerants R-290, R-600a and HCFC refrigerant R-22 during evaporating inside horizontal double pipe heat exchangers are presented. The experimental apparatus is basically a vapour heat pump system, composed of a compressor, a condenser, expansion devices, a evaporator, and some other peripheral devices. The test sections were horizontal double pipe heat exchangers, which were a pair of smoothed tube, having 10.07 mm ID, 12.07 mm OD, and grooved inner fin tube, having 12.70 mm OD, 0.25 mm fin height, and 75 fins. The local evaporating heat transfer coefficients of natural refrigerants were not much affected with the mass velocity than R-22 and it could be interpreted that the local evaporating heat transfer coefficients of R-22 were increased more than those of R-290, R-600a according to the increment of mass velocity. Moreover, the maximum increment of the heat transfer coefficient was found in R-290. The average heat transfer coefficient was obtained the maximum value in R-290 and the minimum value in R-22. It reveals that the natural refrigerant can be used as a substitute for R-22. In the grooved inner fin tube, 70% of the increment of the heat transfer coefficient was obtained compared to the smoothed tube.

  • In the present study, local heat transfer rates for co-rotating disks with two modified hubs having ventilation holes are investigated for Rossby number of 0.04, 0.1 and 0.35 to evaluate the influence of incoming flows through hub holes. A naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine the detailed local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the rotating disks using the heat and mass transfer analogy. Flow field measurements are conducted using Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) and numerical calculations are performed simultaneously to analyze the flow patterns induced by the disk rotation. The basic flow structure in a cavity between co-rotating disks consists of three regions; the solid-body rotating inner region, the outer region with turbulence vortices and the shroud boundary layer region. The heat/mass transfer. rates on the co-rotating disks are very low near the hub due to the solid-body rotation and those increase rapidly in the outer region due to turbulence mixing. The modified hubs with ventilation holes enhances significantly the heat/mass transfer rates on the region near the hub. The results also show that the heat transfer of Hub-2 is superior to that of Hub-1, but Hub-1 is more profitable for destructing the solid-body rotating inner region.

  • The present study investigates the effects of various rib arrangements on heat/mass transfer in the cooling passage of gas turbine blades. A complex flow structure occurs in the cooling passage with rib turbulators which promote heat transfer on the wall. It is important to increase not only the heat transfer rates but also the uniformity of heat transfer in the cooling passage. A numerical computation is performed using a commercial code to calculate the flow structures and experiments are conducted to measure heat/mass transfer coefficients using a naphthalene sublimation technique. A square channel (50 mm × 50 mm) with rectangular ribs (4 mm × 5 mm) is used fur the stationary duct test. The experiments focus on the effects of rib arrangements and gap positions in the discrete ribs on the heat/mass transfer on the duct wall. The rib angle of attack is 60°and the rib-to-rib pitch is 32 mm, that is 8 times of the rib height. With the inclined rib angle of attack (60°), the parallel rib arrangements make a pair of counter rotating secondary flows in the cross section, but the cross rib arrangements make a single large secondary flow including a small secondary vortex. These secondary flow patterns affect significantly the heat/mass transfer on the ribbed wall. The heat/mass transfer in the parallel arrangements is 1.5 ∼2 times higher than that in the cross arrangements. However, the shifted rib arrangements change little the heat/mass transfer from the inline rib arrangements. The gap position in the discrete rib affects significantly the heat/mass transfer because a strong flow acceleration occurs locally through the gap.

  • The experiment of performance about closed-wet cooling tower(CWCT) was conducted in this study. The test section has the cooling water that flows from top part of a heat exchanger that has an entrance of cooling water with one and multi path. The heat exchanger consists of 15.88mm tubes with ten rows and ten columns and staggered arrangement. In this experiment, heat and mass transfer coefficients and range are calculated with variations of cooling water and path. The results indicated that operating CWCT using two path have the high values of heat and mass transfer coefficients and range than one path.
