A Study on the Point-Mass Filter for Nonlinear State-Space Models (비선형 상태공간 모델을 위한 Point-Mass Filter 연구)

  • In this review, we introduce the non-parametric Bayesian filtering algorithm known as the point-mass filter (PMF) and discuss recent studies related to it. PMF realizes Bayesian filtering by placing a deterministic grid on the state space and calculating the probability density at each grid point. PMF is known for its robustness and high accuracy compared to other nonparametric Bayesian filtering algorithms due to its uniform sampling. However, a drawback of PMF is its inherently high computational complexity in the prediction phase. In this review, we aim to understand the principles of the PMF algorithm and the reasons for the high computational complexity, and summarize recent research efforts to overcome this challenge. We hope that this review contributes to encouraging the consideration of PMF applications for various systems.

Estimation of the Properties for a Charring Material Using the RPSO Algorithm (RPSO 알고리즘을 이용한 탄화 재료의 열분해 물성치 추정)

  • Fire characteristics can be analyzed more realistically by using more accurate properties related to the fire dynamics and one way to acquire these fire properties is to use one of the inverse property estimation techniques. In this study two optimization algorithms which are frequently applied for the inverse heat transfer problems are selected to demonstrate the procedure of obtaining pyrolysis properties of charring material with relatively simple thermal decomposition. Thermal decomposition is occurred at the surface of the charring material heated by receiving the radiative energy from external heat sources and in this process the heat transfer through the charring material is simplified by an unsteady 1-dimensional problem. The basic genetic algorithm(GA) and repulsive particle swarm optimization(RPSO) algorithm are used to find the eight properties of a charring material; thermal conductivity(virgin, char), specific heat(virgin, char), char density, heat of pyrolysis, pre-exponential factor and activation energy by using the surface temperature and mass loss rate history data which are obtained from the calculated experiments. Results show that the RPSO algorithm has better performance in estimating the eight pyrolysis properties than the basic GA for problems considered in this study.

Estimation Algorithm of Vehicle Roll Angle and Control Strategy of Roll Mitigation Force Distribution (차량 롤 각 추정 알고리즘 및 롤 저감력 분배 제어 전략)

  • The ROM (roll over mitigation) system is a next-generation suspension system that can improve vehicle-driving stability and ride comfort. Currently, mass-produced safety systems, such as ESC (electronic stability control) and ECS (electronic control suspension), enable measurements of longitudinal and lateral acceleration as well as yaw rate through inertial sensor clusters, but they lack direct measurements of the roll angle. Therefore, in this paper, a roll angle estimation algorithm from ESC system sensors and tire normal force has been proposed. Furthermore, this study presents a method for roll over mitigation force distribution between the front and rear of a ROM system. Performance and reliability of the roll angle estimation and roll over mitigation force distribution were investigated through simulations. The simulation results showed that the proposed control algorithm and strategy are reliable during vehicle rollovers.

BWIM Using Measured Acceleration and Strain Data

  • A new BWIM(bridge weigh-in-motion) algorithm using both measured strain and acceleration data is proposed. To consider the effects of bridge vibration on the estimation of moving loads, the dynamic governing equation is applied with the known stiffness and mass properties but damping is ignored. Dynamic displacements are computed indirectly from the measured strains using the beam theory and accelerations are measured directly by accelerometers. To convert a unit moving load to its equivalent nodal force, a transformation matrix is determined. The incompleteness in the measured responses is considered in developing the algorithm. To examine the proposed BWIM algorithm, simulation studies, laboratory experiments and field tests were carried. In the simulation study, effects of measurement noise and estimation error in the vehicle speed on the results were investigated.

Development of Target Vehicle State Estimation Algorithm Using V2V Communication (V2V 통신을 이용한 상대 차량 상태 추정 알고리즘 개발)

  • This paper describes the development of a target vehicle state estimation algorithm using vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication. Perceiving the state of the target vehicle has great importance for successful autonomous driving and has been studied using various sensors and methods for many years. V2V communication has advantage of not being constrained by surrounding circumstances relative to other sensors. In this paper, we adopt the V2V signal for estimating the target vehicle state. Since applying only the V2V signal is improper by its low frequency and latency, the signal is used as additional measured data to improve the estimation accuracy. We estimate the target vehicle state using Extended Kalman filter (EKF); a point mass model was utilized in process update to predict the state of next step. The process update is followed by measurement update when ego vehicle receives V2V information. The proposed study evaluated state estimation by comparing input V2V information in an experiment where the ego vehicle follows the target vehicle behind it.

Air System Modeling for State Estimation of a Diesel Engine with Consideration of Dynamic Characteristics (동적특성을 고려한 디젤엔진 흡배기 시스템의 상태추정 모델)

  • Model based control methods are widely used to improve the control performance of diesel engine air systems because the control results of the air system significantly affect the emission level and drivability. However, the model based control algorithm requires a lot of unmeasurable states which are hard to be measured in a mass production engine. In this study, an air system model of the diesel engine is proposed to estimate 11 unmeasurable states using only sensors equipped in a mass production engine. In order to improve the estimation performance in the transient condition, dynamic characteristics of the air system are analyzed and implemented as discrete filters. Turbine and compressor efficiency models are also proposed to overcome a limitation of the constant or look-up table based efficiency values. The proposed air system model was validated in steady state and transient conditions by real-time engine experiments. The maximum error of the estimation for 11 physical states was 11.7%.

Initial Pole Position Estimation Algorithm of a Z-Axis PMLSM (Z축 선형 영구자석 동기전동기의 초기 자극위치 추정 알고리즘)

  • This paper deals with the estimation method on the initial pole position of a z-axis permanent magnet linear synchronous motor(PMLSM) without magnetic pole sensors such as Hall sensors. The proposed method takes account of the gravitational force at z-axis and also the load conditions. The algorithm consists of two steps. The first step is to approximately estimate the initial q-axis by monitoring the movements due to the test current at predefined different test q-axes. The second step is to estimate the real q-axis as accurately as possible by using the outputs corresponding to torques due to the test current at three different test q-axes in order to avoid the effect of load mass variations. Experimental results on the z-axis PMLSM show good estimation characteristics of the proposed method irrespective of load mass conditions.

  • An improved method of spectrum detection algorithm for mass spectrum analysis system is proposed. In the conventional spectrum detection algorithm that utilizes the results of the linear approximation and quadratic curve fitting on the ion signal block of each mass index, it is possible to reduce the detection error in the mass spectrum detection by further improving the condition of eliminating the invalid ion signals. Also, the proposed method can reduce the estimation error of the peak value of the mass spectrum by using the result of quadratic curve fitting for the effective ion signal block in which the peak position error is corrected. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, computer simulations were carried out step by step using the measured ion signal. Also, by comparing the rate of false detection for several inputs, the proposed method showed better detection performance than the conventional method.
