  • This study investigated the influence of parenting attitudes and parenting efficacy on parents' educational needs to establish basic data for educational programs and intervention strategies to promote parenting attitudes and parenting efficacy among married immigrant women. This was a study of descriptive correlation among 154 married immigrant women with adolescent children. The results showed that family support and spousal support influenced parenting behavior and stress associated with childcare. Specifically, spousal support and family support were negatively correlated (r = 0.046, F = 3.629 p < 0.05) with parenting attitude (r = 0.046, F = 3.629 p < 0.05). Only spousal support was negatively correlated (r =0.227, F = 7.11 .<.01) with stress from children. Moreover, higher support from the spouse and family was associated with lower parenting stress and higher spousal support was associated with lower stress associated with the relationship with the child. The results of this study will facilitate development of a structured education program for married immigrant women to enhance parenting attitudes, as well as to reduce parenting stress.

  • As the public is already aware, baby food has a significant effect on a baby's physical and mental health. It is also very important because choice of baby food forms proper eating habits, which will affect health in the future. In particular, recognition of appropriate baby food by the mother or the primary care provider is even more important. Although many studies have been conducted on this matter for domestic housewives, no studies have been conducted on married immigrant housewives whose numbers are increasing every year. A survey was conducted on the recognition and current situation of baby food preparation by mothers living in Gangwon Province with children 6 to 36-months-old. The purpose of the study was to research the level of understanding of baby food by immigrant housewives given that they were raised in different environments with different eating habits and child raising norms. And additional purpose was to provide proper educational material and direction for choosing appropriate baby food. The results showed significant differences depending on the nationality and age of the mother. Moreover, the results showed an insufficient understanding of baby food but a high desire for education, as mothers did not receive enough support from society. Therefore, necessary education should be provided systematically after mothers fully learn to communicate in Korean. These mothers need continuous attention and support, so they can settle in this country as wives, daughters-in-law, and mothers. Moreover, the needed professional education should be provided so that the mothers can learn traditional Korean eating habits and understand differences in the culture and environment between countries. As the selection of baby food forms the basis of future eating habits and the foundation for good health, proper education should be available to establish healthy intercultural families.

  • In order to clearly define and understand an essential meaning on a growing number of immigrant women with an experience of being in pregnancy and childbirth, who married to men living in rural community in Korea, our study has been carried out with a phenomenological research method. Basic information collection was implemented by doing multiple in-depth interviews in being recorded with nine immigrant women married to the men, and also analyzed by the phenomenological method of Colaizzi. As the result of the study, the switchover in their life on the course to adaptation or transition to Korean life with experience of being pregnant and delivery generally classified into up to four categories and nine subjects. The four categories come out with "expectation of unknown world/country", "being experienced of new challenge", "feeling happiness going through anguish of hear" and "expectation/hope with her giving birth to a baby-transition in her life". Thus, the result of this study is intended to understand their difficulties likely caused or felt in adaptation to Korea life and culture, and to provide solutions or information of a program for their being actively adapted that may help get them easily assimilated into Korean life and culture.

  • Purpose: This study aims to provide base data for designing education and counseling programs for child-raising by identifying the types, characteristics and predictors of parenting behaviors of married immigrant women. Methods: We used a self-report questionnaire to survey 126 immigrant mothers of young children, who agreed to participate, and who could speak Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, Filipino, or English, at two children's hospitals and two multicultural support centers. Statistical analysis was conducted using descriptive analysis, K-means clustering, ${\chi}^2$ test, Fisher's exact test, one-way ANOVA, $Sch{\acute{e}}ffe^{\prime}s$ test, and multinominal logistic regression. Results: We identified three clusters of parenting behaviors: 'affectionate acceptance group' (38.9%), 'active engaging group' (26.2%), and 'passive parenting group' (34.9%). Passive parenting and affectionate acceptance groups were distinguished by the conversation time between couples (p=.028, OR=5.52), ideology of motherhood (p=.032, OR=4.33), and parenting stress between parent and child (p=.049, OR=0.22). Passive parenting was distinguished from active engaging group by support from spouses for participating in multicultural support centers or relevant programs (p=.011, OR=2.37), and ideology of motherhood (p=.001, OR=16.65). Ideology of motherhood was also the distinguishing factor between affectionate acceptance and active engaging groups (p=.041, OR=3.85). Conclusion: Since immigrant women's parenting type depends on their ideology of motherhood, parenting stress, and spousal relationships in terms of communication and support to help their child-raising and socio-cultural adaptation, it is necessary to provide them with systematic education and support, as well as interventions across personal, family, and community levels.

The outcome variables were health promoting behavior, health status, acculturation, self efficacy, and perceived barrier. The participants were 15 immigrant women in the experimental group and 16 in the control group. Data was analyzed using ${\chi}^2$ test, Fisher's exact test, Mann Whitney U-test and Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results: There was a significant improvement in health promoting behaviors (U=-3.08, p=.002), left shoulder flexibility (U=-3.02, p=.003), right shoulder flexibility (U=-3.02, p=.003), low back flexibility (U=-3.37, p=.001), social health status (U=-3.38 p=.001) and subjective health status (U=-2.17 p=.030) in the experimental group compared to the control group.
