몽골진출 한국기업의 전략적 특성과 성과에 대한 분석 (An Empirical study on the Performance and Entry Strategy for Korean Direct Investment in Mongolia)

  • 해외진출 기업은 시장에서 경쟁력을 확보하기 위해 현지의 환경적 특성에 따른 전략을 수립하여 최적의 성과를 도출한다. 본 연구에서는 몽골에 진출한 한국 기업들의 진출환경을 기업 특성, 현지관리 특성, 문화 특성, 산업 환경 특성으로 구분하여 각 특성이 진출성과에 미치는 영향을 분석하기 위하여, 실증분석을 하였다. 본 연구에서는 몽골에 투자 진출한 한국 기업들의 진출환경을 기업 특성, 현지관리 특성, 문화 특성, 산업 환경 특성으로 구분하여 각각의 특성이 전략에 미치는 영향을 분석하여 기업의 성과를 제고할 수 있는 방안을 모색하였다. 분석 결과, 기업 환경과 전략 간의 관계에서 각각의 환경특성은 전략에 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 미치고 있다. 특히, 기업전략과 성과 간의 관계와 산업 환경과 성과 간의 관계에서, 산업 환경 특성은 성과에 정의 영향을 미치고 있어서 몽골에 진출한 한국 기업의 환경, 전략 및 성과 간의 관계를 입체적으로 분석하였다.

  • This paper focuses on establishing strategies to ensure entry to the Uzbekistan in the process of developing business opportunities and managing industry. The study provides initiatives to maintain industrial competitiveness as well as policy guidance for entry and management on the Uzbekistan's industry. The most prominent feature of Uzbekistan's industrial development policy during the past decade is that it has undertaken an integrated policy approach to development which brought about sustainable economic development. In this development process, trade policy, manpower development policy, and technology policy were well coordinated and complementary to industrial policy in the Uzbekistan. This paper attempts to analyze Uzbekistan's custom and system in terms of broad industrial policy concept through resource and economic environment of Uzbekistan and to derive some lessons of market evaluation and policy implication for Korean government and industrial line.

Essay on the Lessons Learned from Korean Franchisors Going International

  • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to find the issues associated with international expansion of Korean franchisors going international and suggest lessons of proposition to reduce the failure risk in international expansion of franchise systems. Research design, data, and methodology - This is the exploratory study and structured to review (1) background to motivate the expansion of franchisors towards international market, (2) the status of Korean franchisors going international in recent years, (3) issues, (4) lessons learned from the experiences, and (5) summary. Secondary sources were reviewed to get necessary data and statistics. Results - Master franchising was the most preferred entry mode for Korean franchisors. Franchisors must understand the expenses to be incurred as well as revenues associated with international activities. Brand is the core asset of franchisor as a differentiation strategy. Conclusions - The paper indicates that even if international franchising is the unique business model for franchisors to use in little or least risk compared with other international entry modes, it needs a set of complex capabilities that much differ from those in domestic and franchisors should take a step approach to the international market with the planned and long term perspective.

The Static and Dynamic Growth Patterns of High-Tech Ventures in Korea

  • This study explores on the static and dynamic growth patterns of high-tech ventures in Korea. We developed an integrative framework with target market (local vs. global), product/market maturity (existing vs. emerging), and technological capability (follower vs. pioneer). We also identified seven new ventures strategies as follows: i) reactive imitation, ii) proactive localization, iii) import substitution, iv) creative imitation, v) early market-entry, vi) global niche, and vii) global innovation. With five successful Korean new ventures, we found different competitive behaviors and performance among new venture strategic types. This study also observed two different growth patterns: growth through strategic replication and growth through strategic change. It depends on whether they are pursuing similar strategy over time or different strategy within for growth. In addition, we found that creative imitation plays a stepping-stone role in two-step internationalization processes. Although this study is exploratory and needs more empirical studies, it can provide new ventures with meaningful guidelines for growth and internationalization with a dynamic perspective.

정보통신 서비스의 실패 요인: 한국의 텔레콤 서비스시장에서의 실패사례연구 (An Exploratory Study for the Telecommunications Service Failure Cases in South Korea)

  • In this paper, 15 South Korean telecommunications service failure cases were analyzed. Through the in-depth case study, 8 factors were found to be the major causes contributing to the telecommunications service failure. They were (1) ineffective marketing, (2) poor demand forecasting due to misjudgment of customer preference, (3) failure to satisfy technical specifications, (4) loss of cost advantage due to the price cut of competing services or new entry with lower price, (5) loss of utility advantage due to the increased utility of competing services or new entry with higher utility (6) decrease of market attractiveness due to change of customer preference, (7) impact of government policy, and (8) insufficient or low quality of contents. Additional analysis was done to derive managerial implications to the new telecommunications service development strategy. The findings from the paper will provide valuable Insight to the successful Implementation of new service development and service provisioning processes.

The International Development Strategy of Les Enphants Roots in China Market

  • Facing a mature domestic market and the challenges of the global consumer market, retailers in Taiwan are in pursuit of international development strategies for increasing its market opportunities as one of its key growth strategies. In the global market, the Chinese market becomes Taiwan retailers' main international development milestone due to its similarity of language, culture and historical background with China. Therefore, this research uses case study method based on Eclectic paradigm (Dunning 1981) to explore the various advantages of a Taiwanese children's clothing retailer Les Enphants, which include ownership advantage, internalization advantage, and location advantage. These advantages in turn demonstrate rationales behind Les Enphants' internationalization necessity (Why to Go), selecting China as an expansion target (Where to Go), and management and operation strategies implemented in China (How to Go). Our study highlights a successful entry and expansion model of the Taiwanese children clothing retailer, and may have solid contribution to the practical application of internationalization strategy theory.

  • IMF한파에 의한 내수시장의 위축. 유통시장의 개방에 따른 유명 외국업체의 국내시장 진출, 소비자 니즈의 다양화 및 급변화 등으로 우리 나라 유통산업은 여러 가지 어려움에 직면해 있다. 이 논문은, 이와 같은 우리 나라 유통산업을 둘러싼 부정적인 환경변화로부터 발생하는 위기를 슬기롭게 극복하여 시장에서의 경쟁적 우위를 차지할 수 있도록, 정보에 초점을 맞추면서 동시에 일본 유통산업과의 비교분석을 통하여 우리 나라 유통산업의 전략적인 방안을 제시하는데 그 목적이 있다. 정보화란 소비자의 니즈에 대한 자료 및 정보를 신속하게 입수하여 정확하게 분석하고 이를 효율적으로 상품화에 반영하는데 근본적인 목적이 있으므로 우리나라 유통산업의 정보화 전략방안은 통합형 및 연계형 ‘정보시스템의 구축, 정보시스템의 지속적인 개발 및 보완’, 정보의 공유라는 3가지 축을 근간으로 하여 추진되어야 한다.

Regional Multinationals: Evidence from Wal-Mart's Withdrawal from the South Korean Market

  • Purpose - This study aims to understand the phenomenon called "regional multinational" in the geographical expansion of multinational enterprises and to find some evidence whether globalization of multinational enterprises tends to have a strong home region bias. Research design, data, and methodology - Through an in-depth case analysis, we analyze the series of strategic behaviors Wal-Mart made in South Korea from its entry in 1998 to its withdrawal in 2006. Then, we discuss the plausible causes of this exit, seeking to provide some evidence on the "regional multinational" phenomenon. Result - This study finds some evidence on the regional-based expansion of multinational enterprises. Our case study shows that Wal-Mart in South Korea focused on global standardization strategy and made an exit from the market as they were faced with increasing localization demands. From the perspective of multinational enterprises' globalization strategy, Wal-Mart's exit from the South Korean market can be considered as a strategic exit. Conclusion - The findings of this study suggest that while national responsiveness and localized adaptation are considered as a panacea for penetrating international markets, in reality most multinational enterprises attempt to add value primarily by capitalizing on similarities across markets and remain as regional multinationals.

방위산업의 시장구조 결정요인이 기술혁신과 시장지배에 미치는 영향 (The study of the relationship of the defense industry-specific factors effect the innovation of manufacturing technology and the market share.)

  • This study examines the relationship of the industry-specific factors that effect innovation of manufacturing technology and the market share within the defense industry. Since the establishment of the basic defense industry framework in 1973, there were numerous interactions of the industry-specific factors of the defense industry structure with the technological innovation and market organization of the defense industry. During last three decades, the domestic defense industry has achieved the considerable level but the framework of the basic system has not developed much in areas of the military science and the defense manufacturing technology. Industry-specific factors were formed in the process and appeared in a variety of behavioral characteristics as subsystems. Currently, there IS a growing trend where the management of defense industry is gradually deteriorating due to limitation of the domestic industry-specific factor (e.g. defense technologies, amount of demand, etc.). If there is a prominent imbalance of the industry-specific factors. it can trigger the potential problem of conflict, lack of cooperation and control, slowing the growth of the manufacturing technology thereby diminishing the market and deteriorating the defense supply/demand relationship. In a research conducted by Joe S. Bain, Bain analyzed the relationship of the traditional industrial organization where industry-specific factor(S) not only impacts the conductor(C). And, conductor(C) influences the shaping of the performance(P) of relationship of the traditional industrial organization. Consequently, the researcher has identified the demand monopoly, barriers to entry, and market competition with comparison of defense industry issues. These defense issues were three industry-specific factors identified, which are 1) The demand monopoly and The entry barriers to new market competition, 2) the industrial technical factor to a production technical competitiveness and a market sharing competitiveness, 3) the probability factor to revolution for military affairs(RMA) and a R&D production. According to baseline with these factors, the following research model is established from the special companies group(Group A), the systematization companies group(Group B), and the general companies group(Group 0. The hypothesis is that if there are more industry-specific factors, then there will be more relationships of defense industry relation statutes. This research is an empirical study on the relationship that the industry specific factors effects the innovation of manufacturing technology and the shaping of the market in the defense industry. Moreover, the existing models to evaluate the industry specific factors of the defense industry IS much to be desired with the controlled statistical analysis of the result. It is vital to study on current situation with suggesting alternative strategy to the efficient strategy. The descriptive analysis approach analysis is conducted with SPSSWIN to conduct reliability test, factor analysis, correlation analysis, cross-tabulation analysis, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. However, there were some limitations of the survey such as the rigidity of concept about the technical factors and various market management factors. The wishes is that the decision-maker could be utilized these defence industrial factors to formulate efficient defence policy and strategy in the future.
