Inductions of hybrids and reciprocal hybrids between Oryzias dancena and O. javanicus (ODJ and OJD) were conducted and backcross hybrids between female O. dancena and male ODJ were also produced for biological and cytogenetic analysis. Embryonic development of ODJ and OJD were compared with those of their parents. Developmental time was fastest in O. dancena and ODJ, followed by O. javanicus and OJD. Oryzias dancena hatched 11 days (d) after fertilization, ODJ at 13 d, O. javanicus at 14 d and OJD at 15 d. The abnormality of external morphology rate in ODJ was 10.6%; however, OJD showed a high degree of abnormality, over 90%. The proportion of males was 90.0% and 31.3% for ODJ and OJD, respectively. Cytogenetic analysis was conducted to obtain basic information for genetic identification of O. dancena, O. javanicus and their hybrids. The karyotypes of all experimental groups showed 2n=48 chromosomes and the fundamental number (FN) was 48. The first pair carried secondary constrictions near the centromeric regions. Erythrocyte area and volume were $9.8\;{\pm}\;0.5\;{\mu}m^2$ and $18.2\;{\pm}\;1.0\;{\mu}m^3$, respectively, for O. dancena, $8.3\;{\pm}\;0.5\;{\mu}m^2$ and $15.8\;{\pm}\;1.5\;{\mu}m^3$ in O. javanicus, and $18.3\;{\pm}\;0.5\;{\mu}m^2$ and $15.7\;{\pm}\;1.3\;{\mu}m^3$ in ODJ. Erythrocyte area and volume in ODJ were similar to those of O. javanicus. In backcross hybrids between female O. dancena and male ODJ, all embryos failed to develop and died in the late gastrula stage.
Harmful aquatic organisms introduced by ship movement cause marine ecosystem disturbances and are in the form of ballastwater and biofouling. Harmful marine life from ballastwater has been considerably reduced because mandatory treatment on all vessels is required to install onboard vessels. However, there remains risk of migration because biofouling is recommended to countries for management through the IMO guidelines. In particular, biofouling management has recently attracted attention for achieving IMO GHG reduction targets because it contributes to energy efficiency, as well as there are reasons for marine ecosystem protection. In recent years, increasing international consensus on the need for biofouling management is likely to lead to enforcement regulations. Thus, this study suggests the management method of hull attachment organisms in Korea, focusing on the cases of foreign countries that have regulated hull attachment organisms.

Light is a major external environmental factor that influences the circadian rhythm of photosynthetic organisms and various physiological phenomena, such as growth, maturation, and behavior. The number of light-reaching organisms changes depending on the season and atmospheric conditions, and the intensity and wavelength of light differ depending on the organisms inhabiting the environment. Altered light changes the circadian rhythm of fish, which is controlled by clock genes, such as period 2 (Per2), cryptochrome 1 (Cry1), and melatonin. In this study, we set the zeitgeber time (ZT; 14 light-10 dark, LD) based on the actual sunrise and sunset times and examined Per2 and Cry1 activities, levels of aralkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AANAT), and melatonin in Pholis nebulosa, a drifting seaweed species exposed to irregular light. Per2 and Cry1 levels increased during the daytime and decreased after sunset. The AANAT levels decreased during the daytime and increased during the night. Melatonin concentration was highest around midnight (ZT21, 23:30), but exhibited similar concentrations during the daytime. While the activity of Per2, Cry1, and AANAT levels exhibited a typical circadian rhythm observed in most vertebrates, melatonin concentrations did not show a significant difference between the daytime and nighttime. These findings provide insights into the circadian rhythm patterns of organisms exposed to irregular light environments, such as P. nebulosa, which differ from those of typical fish species.

Global climate change will alter many such properties of the Southern Ocean as temperature, circulation, stratification, and sea-ice extent. Such changes are likely to influence the species composition and activity of Antarctic marine microorganisms (protists and bacteria) which playa major role in deter-mining the concentration of atmospheric $CO_2$ and producing precursors of cloud condensation nuclei. Direct impacts of climate change on Antarctic marine microorganisms have been determined for very few species. Increasing water temperature would be expected to result in a southward spread of pelagic cyanobacteria, coccolithophorids and others. Growth rates of many species would be expected to increase slightly but nutrient limitation, especially micronutrients, is likely to result in a negligible increase in biomass. The extent of habitats would be reduced for those organisms presently living close to the upper limit of their thermal tolerance. Increased UVB irradiance is likely to favour the growth of those organisms tolerant of UVB and may change the trophic structure of marine communities. Indirect effects, especially those as a consequence of a diminution of the amount of sea-ice and increased upper ocean stratification, are predicted to lead to a change in species composition and impacts on both trophodynamics and vertical carbon flux.

$CO_2$ impacts on marine ecosystems must be elucidated before implementation of $CO_2$ ocean sequestration. This study was performed for the purpose of applying the use of a cephalopod, Octopus vulgaris to the evaluation of $CO_2$ impacts on marine organisms. 1) 5.25% $MgCl_2\;6H_2O$ is an effective anaesthetic for octopus. 2) Cannula implantation into the abdominal aorta is effective for octopus. 3) A restraint chamber made out of the plastic net is suitable to permit the exit of cannula from the body.
Marine resources have various biological activities and their constituents are more novel than those of land organisms. Several biologically active constituents have been found in marine organisms. Recently, many studies have reported that marine animals (MAs) can be used as functional ingredients in functional foods or nutraceutical due to their health benefits. However, no studies have extensively investigated the cosmeceutical activities of MAs extracts. Here, 70% ethanol extracts of 38 MAs were investigated for their activities of whitening and anti-aging properties for use as materials in novel cosmeceuticals. Anti-aging activities were determined by skin aging-related enzyme activities (anti-collagenase, anti-elastase, anti-hyaluronidase) and whitening activities (anti-tyrosinase, anti-3,4-dihydroxyl-L-phenylalanine [DOPA] oxidation) evaluated by colorimetric method. Among the 38 MAs, we found that Urechis unicinctus and Petrosia corticata extracts showed the strongest inhibitory effects against tyrosinase and DOPA oxidation, respectively. Our results additionally showed that Protankyra bidentata extract might provide a major source of anti-hyaluronidase and anti-elastase; meanwhile, anti-collagenase effects were similar in most MAs. Overall, these results suggest that extracts of marine animals have potential as a tyrosinase, collagenase, elastase, and hyaluronidase inhibitors. Taken together, MA resources could be considered as a novel cosmeceutical agent to be applied in cosmetic industry.
While modern illustration designs require originality, the shape and color of marine life provide rich materials for illustration creation. Illustration has a very high artistic creation value. Based on the knowledge of color science and visual form design, this study takes illustration design and marine biology as the main research object. The purpose of this study is: ① The typical features of Marine life are sorted by color and form. ② Lead out graphic symbols representing Marine life. ③ Combine Marine life with illustration design to make design cases. Through research, it is highlighted that the curve feature is a typical feature for distinguishing marine organisms from terrestrial organisms. The classification and comparative analysis of the color phenomena of tropical fish help to extract and process the color of marine tropical fish on the basis of understanding the color characteristics of tropical fish, and apply it to the illustration design.
Global warming has affected the distribution of organisms for decades and has displayed rapid ascent recently. Research into the effects on tropical organisms are vital. Padina boryana is a resourceful marine microalgae in the Maldives Sea in the Laccadive region. A 70% ethanol extraction (PBE) of this seaweed was used to investigate its antioxidant potential. Both in vitro and in vivo models were implemented. PBE exhibited protective potential against H2O2 induced apoptosis. ROS levels were suppressed due to PBE. PBE expressed a cytoprotective nature. In vivo experiments involving the zebra fish model conformed its validity. The antioxidant efficacy of PBE was dose dependent. Study outcomes suggest PBE has potential as a novel and valuable marine resource to aid the functional food and cosmeceutical industries.
