The aim of this article is to investigate the relationship between insurance and economic growth at aggregate and disaggregate level for the period 1982-2018. Very few studies have been carried out in this field, with contradictory results and using an aggregate data while, according to different authors, an aggregate data might provide spurious results. The author used Ordinary Least Squares Regressions (OLS) and Granger Causality tests to explore the strength and direction of the relationship between insurance and economic growth at an aggregate level. To check the relationship at disaggregate level life insurance, marine insurance, and property insurance are regressed on trade openness and investment, respectively. Non-life insurance at an aggregate level plays a positive and significant role in promoting economic growth, but life insurance has an insignificant impact on the Pakistan economy. On the other hand, non-life insurances at a disaggregated level such as marine insurance negatively affect a vital part of economic growth, i.e., trade. At the same time, property insurance has a significant and positive role in boosting investment. Life, marine, and property insurance Granger cause economic growth, trade, and investment in a single direction. Nevertheless, is a bi-directional relationship between economic growth and non-life insurance.
Isolation and cloning of seven-band grouper (Epinephelus septemfasciatus) growth hormone cDNA from pituitary gland revealed an open reading frame of 612 bp coding for a pre-growth hormone of 204 amino acids with a 17 amino acid putative signal peptide. Deduced amino acid sequence showed that there was one possible N-glycosylation site at $Asn^{l84}$ and four cysteine residues $(Cys^{52},\;Cys^{160},\;Cys^{177},\;Cys^{185})$ on t e same positions as in some other species where they were involved in the stabilization of the tertiary structure. The seven-band grouper growth hormone (sbgGH) presented a $99.5\%$ amino acid sequence identity with the growth hormone of Epinephelus coioides and contained the conserved hormone domain region. Comparison of growth hormone sequences from evolutionarily diverse species revealed 25 amino acid residues conserved in jawless fishes to modern mammals. It also revealed an evolutionary trend to retain the same polypeptide sequence even in the distantly related animals while allowing alterations to occur in polypeptides of the closely related species. In order to create a recombinant system to produce high levels of the growth hormone, it was expressed in Escherichia coli (BL21) cells. The gel analysis revealed theoretically expected molecular weights for both mature and pre-sbgGHs.

The 10 species of marine green algae was collected from Jejudo(Island) in Korea. Methanolic and aqueous extracts were prepared and screened for inhibition activities against tumor cell growth. Of the tested samples, the sea staghorn (Codium fragile) aqueous extract (CFAE) showed the highest activity on CT-26 cell growth. Therefore, CFAE was selected for further experiments and the possibility to induce apoptosis by the CFAE was investigated. Flow cytometric analysis revealed that it dose-dependently increased apoptotic cells with hypodiploid DNA contents in CT-26 cell line. These results indicated that CFAE can suppress the growth of CT-26 cells through apoptosis. The CFAE decreased the protein expression of anti-apoptotic Bcl-xL and led to the activation of caspase-3 and -7. A crude polysaccharide was separated from CFAE and it mainly constituted with 61.2% galactose and 30.5% arabinose as analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
The effect of live food and commercial diet on sweetfish Plecoglossus altivelis culture was assessed by determining the daily growth rate and feed conversion ratio. After feeding for 8 weeks, the Moina macrocopa diet resulted in a higher growth rate of 5.101 compared to commercial (3.441) and Artemia (2.729) diets. In addition fish fed the M. macrocopa diet had the weight gain, averaging 41.29 g at the end of the experiment. The content of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) was highest in the commercial diet, while free fatty acids were not detected in the M. macrocopa diet. Triglycerides, the energy source in fishes, constituted 40.0% of the M. macrocopa diet, which was significantly higher than in the commercial and Artemia diets at 20.0 and 12.0%, respectively These results indicate that freshwater M. macrocopa can be used as feed for sweetfish larvae, even without docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) enrichment from Artemia.
This study investigated the potential use of various organic carbon sources (glucose, glycerol and acetate) and different concentrations of $CO_2$ for culturing marine microalga Dunaliella tertiolecta. Cell growth and lipid production were monitored under heterotrophic, mixotrophic and photoautotrophic modes of cultivation. D. tertiolecta showed the ability to grow under mixotrophic (acetate and glucose), heterotrophic (glucose) and photoautotrophic condition under high $CO_2$ concentration (15%). With all the organic carbon sources (glucose, glycerol and acetate) tested in this study, 1~5% acetate enhanced cell growth rate and lipid content, while higher concentrations of acetate (10% and 15%) were inhibitory and resulted in cell death.
Triploid fish have attracted the attention of fish farmers owing to of their larger cell size compared to that of diploid fish and their ability to utilize the energy required for sexual maturation for growth instead. However, the effect of increased growth in triploid fish has shown varying results. Therefore, this study aimed to compare growth between diploid and triploid starry flounders and diploid and triploid hybrid juveniles (starry flounder, Platichthys stellatus ♀×stone flounder, Kareius bicoloratus ♂) based on breeding water temperature to investigate the effect of increased growth in triploid fishes. The experiment was performed by categorizing the water temperature as high temperature (EXP. 1, 14.5-23.5℃) and low temperature (EXP. 2, 6.4-13.3℃) based on the optimal water temperature for starry flounder breeding. In EXP. 1, the growth of starry flounder triploids and hybrid triploids was significantly higher than that of diploids. However, in EXP. 2 the weight gain and specific growth rate of the starry flounder triploid were higher, and the growth of starry flounder was higher than that of the hybrids.
An eight-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of a diet consisting of different onion juice processing by-product (OJPB) levels on juvenile black rockfish Sebastes schlegelii growth, feed utilization, and, lysozyme and antioxidant enzymes activities. Juvenile rockfish (2.2 g) were randomly distributed into 15 flow-through tanks (30 fish/tank). Five experimental diets were prepared in triplicate. The experimental diets were supplemented with OJPB at different levels of 0 (control), 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1% (designated as OJPB0, OJPB0.25, OJPB0.5, OJPB0.75 and OJPB1, respectively). At the end of the feeding trial, the results revealed that the fish that were fed the OJPB0.75 and OJPB1 diets showed enhancement in growth (weight gain and specific growth rate) and feed utilization (feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio) compared with the fish that were fed other diets. Plasma lysozyme, glutathione concentration, and superoxide dismutase and catalase activities significantly increased in the fish that were fed the OJPB0.75 and OJPB1 diets. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of 0.75-1% OJPB in juvenile rockfish diet improved the growth performance and antioxidant status.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of cottonseed and soybean meal on growth performance of juvenile olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). Nine hundred fish $(0.74{\pm}0.11g)$ in the early juvenile stage were randomly divided into 15 groups, and 3 groups were fed one of five isonitrogenous (56% CP) and isocaloric $(16.3\;MJ\;kg^{-1})$ diets replacing 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40% of fish meal protein by equal proportion (1:1, w:w) of cottonseed and soybean meal (CS) (designated by Control, CS10, CS20, CS30, and CS40, respectively). A solvent extracted cottonseed meal containing high crude protein (44%) and low fiber content (<12%) was used in this study. After 10 weeks of feeding trial, the growth offish fed diets CS10, CS20, and CS30 were not significantly (P>0.05) different compared to that of fish fed the control diet. However, diet CS40 exhibited significantly lower (P<0.05) growth performance than the control diet. No differences were observed in whole body composition of fish fed all the experimental diets. This study indicates that mixture of cottonseed and soybean meal with lysine and methionine supplementation can replace up to 30% fish meal protein in diet for olive founder at the early juvenile stage. However, we suggest that 20% of fish meal protein replacement by cottonseed (10%) and soybean (10%) meal can be the optimum level for commercial use in safety according to the growth performances.
We examined cell regeneration efficiency of brown marine algae living in Jeju coast for search of a novel therapeutic device with cutaneous wound healing materials. The five algae were collected and compared with epidermal growth factor (EGF) as a positive control in the assays of cell proliferation and cell migration of NIH3T3 fibroblast cells. Among the 80% methanol extracts of these brown algae, the two algal extracts from Ishige foliacea and Colpomenia bullosa showed the proliferative effects of the cells similar to the effect of EGF. Besides it was found that Colpomenia bullosa extract significantly enhanced cell migration of NIH3T3 cell. In the study, therefore, we confirmed that the Colpomenia bullosa extract improved proliferation of NIH3T3 cell and a potential candidate for cultaneous wound healing.
There are a number of pieces of evidences that suggest a link between marine diatoms and microorganisms, but knowledge about related microbial communities is greatly lacking. The present study investigated the microbial community structures related to the growth of the marine diatom Cyclotella meneghiniana. We collected free-living bacteria (FLB) and particle-associated bacteria (PAB) at each growth stage (e.g., lag, exponential, stationary and death) of the diatom, and analyzed their bacterial 16S rDNA using pyrosequencing. Metagenomics analysis showed that community structures of FLB and PAB differed considerably with the progress of growth stages. FLB showed higher diversity than PAB, but variation in the different growth stages of C. meneghiniana was more evident in PAB. The proportion of the genus Hoeflea, belonging to the order Rhizobiales, was dominant in both FLB and PAB, and it gradually increased with the growth of C. meneghiniana. However, Enhydrobacter clade tended to considerably decrease in PAB. In addition, Marinobacter decreased steadily in FLB, but first increased and then decreased in PAB. These results suggest that Hoeflea, Enhydrobacter, and Marinobacter may be closely related to the growth of diatom C. meneghiniana.
