Chemical cleaning effects on properties and separation efficiency of an RO membrane

  • This study aims to investigate the impacts of chemical cleaning on the performance of a reverse osmosis membrane. Chemicals used for simulating membrane cleaning include a surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS), a chelating agent (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, EDTA), and two proprietary cleaning formulations namely MC3 and MC11. The impact of sequential exposure to multiple membrane cleaning solutions was also examined. Water permeability and the rejection of boron and sodium were investigated under various water fluxes, temperatures and feedwater pH. Changes in the membrane performance were systematically explained based on the changes in the charge density, hydrophobicity and chemical structure of the membrane surface. The experimental results show that membrane cleaning can significantly alter the hydrophobicity and water permeability of the membrane; however, its impacts on the rejections of boron and sodium are marginal. Although the presence of surfactant or chelating agent may cause decreases in the rejection, solution pH is the key factor responsible for the loss of membrane separation and changes in the surface properties. The impact of solution pH on the water permeability can be reversed by applying a subsequent cleaning with the opposite pH condition. Nevertheless, the impacts of solution pH on boron and sodium rejections are irreversible in most cases.

'매향' 딸기의 마그네슘 영양진단을 위한 결핍증상 및 식물체 내 한계농도 (Characterization of Symptom and Determination of Tissue Critical Concentration for Diagnostic Criteria in 'Maehyang' Strawberry (Fragaria$\times$ananassa Duch.) as Influenced by Magnesium Concentrations in the Fertigation Solution)

  • 마그네슘 시비농도를 인위적으로 조절하여 '매향' 딸기를 관비재배하면서 Mg의 시비수준이 생장과 결핍증상 발현에 미치는 영향을 구명하고, 건전생육을 유지할 수 있는 식물체 및 토양의 한계농도를 밝히기 위하여 본 연구를 수행하였다. 마그네슘 결핍증상은 하위엽에서 발생하였으며, 초기에 하위엽의 엽맥 사이에서 반점 형태의 황화현상이 나타난 후 점차 반점 부위가 확산되어 엽맥간 황화현상으로 발전하였다 또한 증상이 심해지면서 엽맥 사이가 검게 변하고, 하위엽 선단의 갈변 및 괴사하는 증상이 발생하였다. Mg시비농도를 조절하여 관비하고 정식 120일 후에 지상부 생육을 조사한 결과 Mg 1.0 또는 2mM의 처리에서 생육이 우수하였으며, 0.5 이하나 4mM 이상으로 Mg 시비농도를 조절한 처리의 생장이 저조해지는 경향이었다. 건물중은 마그네슘 시비농도에 대하여 3차 곡선회귀적인 반응을 보였으며 식물체당 약 8.2g의 건물중을 생산할 때 정점이 형성되었다. 최대 생장량의 90%를 최저 한계점으로 간주하면 식물체당 7.4g 이상의 건물중을 생산하기 위해서는 Mg 함량이 $0.30\sim0.65%$의 범위에 포함되도록 시비해야 하며, 최적 시비농도는 약 2mM 이라고 판단하였다. 또한, 최대 생산량인 식물체당 생체중 36.2g의 90%를 최저 및 치고 한계점으로 간주 할 경우 엽병 추출액의 Mg농도가 $19\sim40mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$의 범위에 포함되도록 시비해야 한다고 판단하였다.

일반균형에서 최적 혼잡통행료 (Optimal Congestion Charges in General Equilibrium)

  • 현재 교통경제학에서 통용되는 도로시설의 최적 혼잡통행료는 분석의 대상을 개별 시설로 국한시킨 부분적인 사회복지 최적화모형에서 도출한 것이다. 그렇지만 특정 시설에 국한하여 부과하는 경우, 부분균형에서 해당 시설의 최적 혼잡통행료는 교통망 전체로서 사용자 후생을 최대화시킬 수 있는지 불분명하다. 특정 시설에 부과된 통행료는 여타 대체시설의 교통량을 증가시키는 파급효과를 동반하기 때문이다. 본 연구에서는 이와 같은 기존 이론의 취약점을 극복하는 대안적 접근방법이 제시되었다. 본 연구의 주된 차이점은 여러 개의 교통시설 이외에도 일반 소비재가 유통되는 시장에 대한 일반균형분석을 통해 최적의 혼잡통행료를 산출한 것이고, 이러한 접근방법은 기존 이론과는 차별화된 분석결과를 가져왔다. 이러한 일반균형분석에서 모든 교통시설에 혼잡통행료를 부과하는 경우, 개별 교통시설의 최적 혼잡통행료는 해당 시설의 한계비용이 한계효용과 일치시키는 값이었다. 이러한 분석결과는 부분균형에서 유도된 기존의 결과와 일치한다. 반면 특정 교통시설에 국한하여 혼잡통행료를 부과하는 경우, 혼잡통행료는 대체시설로의 수요 전이효과등을 반영하여 부분균형에서의 최적 혼잡통행료에 비해 낮은 값으로 나타났다.

기능화된 실리카 비드를 이용한 수용액상의 중금속 이온의 제거공정에 대한 모사 연구 (A Simulation Study on the Removal Process of the Heavy Metal Ion in Aqueous Solution by the Functionalized Silica Beads)

  • 본 연구에서는 수용액상의 금속이온을 기능화된 구형의 실리카 담체를 이용하여 제거하는 공정에 대하여 유한 차분법을 이용하여 모사하였다. 평형 모델과 비평형 모델을 수립하여 무차원 변수와 각종 변수에 대한 영향을 살펴보았으며 평형 모델과 비평형 모델의 결과를 비교하였다. 평형모델의 경우 Freundlich 등온식을 사용하였으며 비평형 모델의 경우 1차 반응속도를 가정하였다. 평형모델과 비평형 모델의 경우 변수값에 따라 비슷한 경향을 나타내었으며 금속이온 제거공정의 효율을 예측할 수 있었다. 문헌에 제시된 실험값을 활용하여 평형 모델의 예측 결과를 비교한 결과 부합되는 결과를 나타내었다.

Interdisciplinary rehabilitation of a root-fractured maxillary central incisor: A 12-year follow-up case report

  • Single-tooth implantation has become a common treatment solution for replacement of a root-fractured maxillary incisor in adults, but the long-term esthetic results can be unfavorable due to progressive marginal bone loss, resulting in gingival recession. In this case report, a maxillary central incisor with a root fracture in its apical one-third was orthodontically extruded and extracted in a 21-year-old female. Implant surgery was performed after a 3-month healing period, and the final crown was placed about 12 months after extraction. After 12 years, favorable osseous and gingival architectures were visible with adequate bone height and thickness at the buccal cortical plate, and no gingival recession was seen around the implant-supported crown. Although modern dentistry has been shifting toward simplified, clinical procedures and shorter treatment times, both general dentists and orthodontists should be aware of the possible long-term esthetic advantages of orthodontic extrusion of hopelessly fractured teeth for highly esthetically demanding areas and should educate and motivate patients regarding the choice of this treatment solution, if necessary.

  • This paper was studied on the cavitation instability of a Solution Pump Inducer in an absorption chiller-heater. Inlet pressure of LiBr and rotational speed at nominal mode are 2,800 Pa and 3,500 rpm respectively. Due to the marginal operation of available NPSH, the cavitation performance of the inducer is critical for the stable operation without the deterioration of head performance. In the study, cavitation performance and its mode of instability was investigated experimentally. Water was used as the working fluid and the test inducer was scaled up as 1.75 times for detail measurements and flow visualization. Inlet pressure was controlled by a vacuum pump. This research focused on types of cavitation instability and phenomena to investigate the possibility of harmful damage due to cavitation instability. Casing wall pressure and instantaneous inlet pressure was measured to observe the unsteady flow characteristics. Through the visualization and spectrum analysis of pressure, the occurrence region and intensity of asymmetric cavitation and cavitation surge are analyzed in the test inducer.

Resistance of Cementitious Binders against a Fall in the pH at Corrosion Initiation

  • At the onset of corrosion of steel in concrete, hydrogen ions usually evolve in the process of electrochemical reaction, thereby decreasing the pH of the pore solution, which can be buffered by cement hydration products, as being representatively illustrated by calcium hydroxide. Hence, a fall in the pH is dependent on properties of cement hydration (i.e. hydration products and degree of hydration). The present study tested acid neutralization capacity (ANC) of cementitious binders of OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement), 30% PFA(Pulverized Fuel Ash), 60% GGBS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag), 10% SF(Silica Fume) to quantify the resistance of cement matrix to a pH fall. Cement pastes were cast at 0.4 of a free W/C ratio with 1.5% chlorides by weight of binder in cast. Powder samples obtained crushed and ground specimen after 200 days of curing were diluted in still water combined with different levels of 1M nitric acid solution, ranging from 0.5 to 20 mol/kg. Then, the pH of diluted solution was monitored until any further change in the pH did not take place. It was seen that the pH of the diluted solution gradually decreased as the molar amount of nitric acid increased. At some particular values of the pH, however, a decrease in the pH was marginal, which can be expressed in the peak resistances to a pH fall in the ANC curve. The peaks occurred at the variations in the pH, depending on binder type, but commonly at about 12.5 in the pH, indicate a resistance of precipitated calcium hydroxide. The measurement of water soluble chloride at the end of test showed that the amount of free chloride was significantly increased at the pH corresponding to the peaks in the ANC curve, which may reflect the adsorption of hydration products to chlorides.

네오아소진의 국부처리에 의한 사과나무 부란병의 방제 (Control of Apple Valsa Canker by Localized Spraying with Neoasozin Solution, an Arsenic Fungicide)

  • Undiluted neoasozin solution (6.5% a.i.), an arsenic fungicide, was sprayed on 169 cankers of apple trees from early March to September in 1987 twice at intervals of one week without scraping off the affected barks. Among the treated cankers, 79.9% ceased to grow within 1∼7 weeks, 13.0% showed partial development, and 7.1% grew continuously to girdle the branches. The partially developed cankers, however, could also be cured by an additional spray after slightly piercing at the edge of cankers to facilitate the penetration of the chemical. When the canker growth was blocked, cankers were encircled by cracks developed at the marginal area of the cankers. If the cracks developed once, very few cankers grew beyond them. The above results suggest that the crack development may be the consequence of the host defense activity to wall off the pathogen. In addition to the curative efficacy, the neoasozin solution inhibited sporulation of the pathogenic fungus almost completely. However, the pathogen survived for more than three months in some cankers that externally appeared to be cured, suggesting that an indirect mode of action of the chemical against apple Valsa canker seems to be still more persuasive than the direct fungicidal effect. In the final examination conducted in the mid April of the next year, 72.7% of the cankers were completely cured by the two successive neoasozin treatments. Moreover the cure rate became 83.1% if that of partially developed cankers which were also completely cured by an additional treatment was also taken into account. Since 1989 when this method was widely applied in apple orchards in Korea, apple Valsa canker has been effectively controlled to reach a tolerable level.

비모수적 코플라를 이용한 반복측정 이변량 자료의 조건부 결합 분포 추정 (Estimation of the joint conditional distribution for repeatedly measured bivariate cholesterol data using nonparametric copula)

  • 본 논문에서는 이변량 경시적 자료의 조건부 결합 분포를 추정하기 위하여 회귀 모형과 코플라 모형을 연구하였다. 주변 분포의 추정을 위하여 시변 전환 모형을 고려하였고, 이변량 반응변수 각각에 대한 주변 분포를 경험 분포를 이용한 비모수적 코플라를 이용하여 결합하여 조건부 결합 분포를 추정하였다. 주변 분포 모형의 모수 추정치는 추정방정식의 해로 얻어낼 수 있으며 우리가 제안한 모형은 조건부 평균 모형만으로 자료를 설명하기 어려운 경우에 적용될 수 있다. 시변 전환 모형과 비모수적 코플라 모형을 결합한 본 논문의 방법은 반복 측정된 이변량 경시적 자료에 대한 모형화가 모형에 대한 가정에서 비교적 자유로운 장점이 있다. 우리는 본 논문의 방법을 반복 측정된 이변량 콜레스테롤 자료를 분석하는데 적용하여 보았다.

Botulinum Toxin Therapy versus Anterior Belly of Digastric Transfer in the Management of Marginal Mandibular Branch of the Facial Nerve Palsy: A Patient Satisfaction Survey

  • Background Botulinum toxin (BT) chemodenervation and anterior belly of digastric muscle (ABD) transfer are both treatment options in the management of an isolated marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve (MMB) palsy. We compare the patient satisfaction following either BT injections or ABD transfer in the management of their isolated MMB palsy. Methods Patients in the ABD-arm of the study were identified retrospectively from September 2007 to July 2014. The patients in the BT-arm of the study were identified prospectively from those attending the clinic. Both groups of patients completed a validated patient satisfaction survey. Statistical analysis was performed and a P-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Seven patients were in the ABD-arm and 11 patients in the BT-arm of the study. The patient satisfaction in both groups was high with 45% of ABD-arm patients and 40% of BT-arm patients rating their overall outcome as 'better' or 'much better', which was significantly more than the proportion rating their outcome as 'worse' or 'much worse' (P<0.001), although there was a significant trend towards those in the ABD-arm being more likely to be dissatisfied with their outcome (P=0.01). Conclusions BT therapy is a good first-line intervention in the management of isolated MMB palsy. We have, however, shown that the overall satisfaction in both groups is high. Therefore, in patients who would prefer a more permanent solution to manage their facial asymmetry, ABD transfer remains a satisfactory treatment option with a good level of patient satisfaction.
