  • The objective of this study is to investigate the optimal arrangement of cameras used for the robot's vision control scheme. The used robot's vision control scheme involves two estimation models, which are the parameter estimation and robot's joint angle estimation models. In order to perform this study, robot's working region is divided into three work spaces such as left, central and right spaces. Also, cameras are positioned on circular arcs with radius of 1.5m, 2.0m and 2.5m. Seven cameras are placed on each circular arc. For the experiment, nine cases of camera arrangement are selected in each robot's work space, and each case uses three cameras. Six parameters are estimated for each camera using the developed parameter estimation model in order to show the suitability of the vision system model in nine cases of each robot's work space. Finally, the robot's joint angles are estimated using the joint angle estimation model according to the arrangement of cameras for robot's point-position control. Thus, the effect of camera arrangement used for the robot's vision control scheme is shown for robot's point-position control experimentally.

  • Delta robots are usually used for industrial manufacturing, but heavy weight and expensive price have been obstacles to rapid propagation of robots in the field. The goal of this research is to make light-weight and price-competitive delta robots. To reduce the weight, we used plastic material for the arm link, and to reduce the price, we used a step-motor as the main actuator. First we formulated the equations of inverse kinematics for the designed delta robot and then verified these equations by using multibody-dynamics simulation. An algorithm of motion control was developed and applied to the motion-processing unit using a timer-interrupt of 8 milliseconds. Finally, we tested the performance of the new delta robot by checking its control of motion along line segments.

  • With the recent increase of multiple robots cooperating in smart manufacturing logistics environments, it has become very important how to predict the safety and efficiency of the individual tasks and dynamically assign them to the best one of available robots. In this paper, we propose a novel task policy learner based on deep relational reinforcement learning for predicting the safety and efficiency of tasks in a multi-robot manufacturing logistics environment. To reduce learning complexity, the proposed system divides the entire safety/efficiency prediction process into two distinct steps: the policy parameter estimation and the rule-based policy inference. It also makes full use of domain-specific knowledge for policy rule learning. Through experiments conducted with virtual dynamic manufacturing logistics environments using NVIDIA's Isaac simulator, we show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed system.

  • The lightweight and compact actuator with high power is required to perform motion with multiple degrees of freedom. To reduce the size and inertia of a robot manipulator, the mechanical transmission system is used. The shape memory alloy(SMA) is similar to the muscle-tendon-bone network of a human hand. However, there are some drawback and nonlinearity, such as the hysteresis and the stress dependence. In this paper, the design of the underactuated robot hand is studied. The 3-finger dexterous hand is driven by the SMA actuator using segmental mechanism. This digital approach enables to overcome the nonlinearity of SMA wire. The translational displacement of SMA actuator required to bend a phalanx of the underactuated robot hand is estimated and the bending angle of the underactuated robot hand according to input displacement of SMA actuator is predicted by the multi-body dynamic analysis.

  • An open architecture manufacturing strategy intends to integrate manufacturing components on a single platform so that a particular component can be easily added and/or replaced. Therefore, the control scheme based upon the open architecture concept is hardware-independent. In this paper, a modular and object oriented approach for a PC-based open robot control system is investigated. A standard reference model for robot systems, which consists of three modules; hardware module, operating system module, and application software module, is first proposed. Then, a PC-based Open Robot Controller(PC-ORC), which can reconfigure robot control systems in various production environments, is developed. The PC-ORC is built upon the object-oriented method, and allows an easy implementation and modification of various modules. The PC-ORC consists of basic softwares, application objects, and additional hardware device on the PC Platform. The application objects are: sequencer, computation unit, servo control, ancillary equipment, external sensor control, and so on. In order to demonstrate the applicability of the PC-ORC, the proposed PC-ORC configuration is applied to an industrial SCARA robot system.

  • This paper describes a whole-body (human body's) motion generation scheme for an android robot that uses motion capture device and a nonlinear constrained optimization method. Because the captured motion data are based on global coordinates and the actors have different heights and different upper-lower body ratios, the captured motion data cannot be used directly for a humanoid robot. In this paper, we suggest a method for obtaining robot joint angles, which allow the resultant robot motion to be as close as possible to the captured human motion data, by applying a nonlinear constrained optimization method. In addition, the results are animated to demonstrate the similarity of the motions.

  • This paper presents the theoretical development of a complete navigation problem of a non-holonomic mobile robot by using sonar sensors. To solve this problem, a new method to compute a fuzzy perception of the environment is presented, dealing with the uncertainties and imprecision from the sensory system and taking into account nonholonomic constraints of the robot. Fuzzy perception, fuzzy controller are applied, both in the design of each reactive behavior and solving the problem of behavior combination, to implement a fuzzy behavior-based control architecture. Different experiments in populated environments have proved to be very successful. Our method is able to guide the mobile robot named KUM-Robo safety and efficiently during long experimental time.

  • Most pipe-inspection robots have fixed sizes and use a wired cable system. Pipelines are generally composed of various structures, including bent pipes, vertical pipes, branch pipes, and holes, and it is difficult to explore the insides of such modular piping structures. In an offshore plant pipeline, a robot that can pass through the pipe hole in the downward direction or avoid obstacles, such as a measuring instruments, has not been introduced yet. In this study, an inspection robot that can travel through most pipelines in offshore plants is proposed. This robot uses mecanum wheels; upward, downward, and rotary motion; and a novel rotatable mechanism. Moreover, the robot is designed to be compact and lightweight to include additional devices in the middle.
