  • Silk fibroin is a biocompatible and slowly biodegradable natural polymer. This natural polymer has excellent mechanical properties, non-toxicity, and non-immunogenic properties and has been demonstrated to support tissue regeneration. Also, gelatin is a natural material derived from collagen by hydrolysis and has an almost identical composition as that of collagen. Silk fibroin/gelatin scaffolds have been fabricated by using the freeze-drying method. To establish the scaffold manufacturing condition for silk fibroin and gelatin, we made scaffolds with various compositions of gelatin, glutaldehyde and silk fibroin. The silk fibroin/gelatin scaffolds were characterized using SEM, DSC, and water absorption ability tests. The cellular proliferation was evaluated by WST assay. These results suggested that a scaffold containing 8% of gelatin, 1% of glutaldehyde and 0.3 g of silk fibroin provided suitable characterstics for cell adhesion and proliferation. In conclusion, the silk fibroin/gelatin scaffold may serve as a potential cell delivery vehicle and a structural basis for tissue engineering.

  • In order to reduce the manufacturing cost of MCU chips used in applications such as wireless chargers and USB-C, compared to DP-EEPROM (Double Poly EEPROM), which requires 3 to 5 additional process masks, it is even more necessary MTP(Multi-Time Programmable), which is less than one additional mask and have smaller unit cell size. In addition, in order to improve endurance characteristics and data retention characteristics of the MTP memory cell due to E/P(Erase / Program) cycling, the distribution of the VTP(Program Threshold Voltage) and the VTE(Erase Threshold Voltage) needs to be narrow. In this paper, we proposed a current-type BL S/A(Bit-Line Sense Amplifier) circuit, WM(Write Mask) circuit, BLD(BL Driver) circuit and a algorithm, which can reduce the distribution of program and VT and erase VT, through compare the target current by performing the erase and program pulse of the short pulse several times, and if the current specification is satisfied, the program or erase operation is no longer performed. It was confirmed that the 256Kb MTP memory fabricated in the Magnachip semiconductor 0.13㎛ process operates well on the wafer in accordance with the operation mode.

  • There has been increasing concerns for the problems of water security in countries, caused by the frequent occurrence of localized drought due to the climate change and uncertainty of water balance. The importance of fresh water is emphasized as considerable amount of usable fresh water is utilized for power generation sector producing electricity. PV power system, the source of renewable energy, consumes water for the every steps of life cycle: manufacturing, installation, and operation. However, it uses relatively less water than the traditional energy sources such as thermal power and nuclear power sources. In this study, to find out the use of water for the entire process of PV power system from extracting raw materials to operating the system, the footprint of water in the whole process is measured to be analyzed. Measuring the result, the PV water footprint of value chain was $0.989m^3/MWh$ and the water footprint appeared higher specially in poly-Si and solar cell process. The following two reasons explain it: poly-Si process is energy-intensive process and it consumes lots of cooling water. In solar cell process, deionized water is used considerably for washing a high-efficiency crystalline silicon. It is identified that PV system is the source using less water than traditional ones, which has a critical value in saving water. In discussing the future energy policy, it is vital to introduce the concept of water footprint as a supplementary value of renewable energy.

  • Background: After the resection at the mandibular site involving oral cancer, free vascularized fibular graft, a type of vascularized autograft, is often used for the mandibular reconstruction. Titanium mesh (T-mesh) and particulate cancellous bone and marrow (PCBM), however, a type of non-vascularized autograft, can also be used for the reconstruction. With the T-mesh applied even in the chin and angle areas, an aesthetic contour with adequate strength and stable fixation can be achieved, and the pores of the mesh will allow the rapid revascularization of the bone graft site. Especially, this technique does not require microvascular training; as such, the surgery time can be shortened. This advantage allows older patients to undergo the reconstructive surgery. Case presentation: Reported in this article are two cases of mandibular reconstruction using the ready-made type and custom-made type T-mesh, respectively, after mandibular resection. We had operated double blind peer-review process. A 79-year-old female patient visited the authors' clinic with gingival swelling and pain on the left mandibular region. After wide excision and segmental mandibulectomy, a pectoralis major myocutaneous flap was used to cover the intraoral defect. Fourteen months postoperatively, reconstruction using a ready-made type T-mesh (Striker-Leibinger, Freibrug, Germany) and iliac PCBM was done to repair the mandible left body defect. Another 62-year-old female patient visited the authors' clinic with pain on the right mandibular region. After wide excision and segmental mandibulectomy on the mandibular squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), reconstruction was done with a reconstruction plate and a right fibula free flap. Sixteen months postoperatively, reconstruction using a custom-made type T-mesh and iliac PCBM was done to repair the mandibular defect after the failure of the fibula free flap. The CAD-CAM T-mesh was made prior to the operation. Conclusions: In both cases, sufficient new-bone formation was observed in terms of volume and strength. In the CAD-CAM custom-made type T-mesh case, especially, it was much easier to fix screws onto the adjacent mandible, and after the removal of the mesh, the appearance of both patients improved, and the neo-mandibular body showed adequate bony volume for implant or prosthetic restoration.

  • The developement of a HLW disposal canister is under way in KAERI using Cold Spray Coating technique. To estimate corrosion behavior of a cold sprayed copper, a creivice corrosion test was conducted at Southwest Research Institute(SWRI) in the United State. For the measurement of repassivation potential needed for crevice corrosion, three methods such as (1) ASTM G61-86 : Cyclic Potentiodynamic Polarization Measurements, (2) Potentiodynamic Polarization plus intermediate Potentiostatic Hold method, and (3) ASTM G192-08 (THE method) : Potentiodynamic- Galvanostatic-Potentiostatic Method, were introduced in this report. In the crevice corrosion test, the occurrence of corrosion at crevice area was optically determined and the repassivation potentials were checked for three kind of copper specimens in a simulated KURT underground water, using a crevice former dictated in ASTM G61-86. The applied electrochemical test techniques were cyclic polarization, potentiostatic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. As a result of crevice corrosion tests, every copper specimens including cold sprayed one did not show any corrosion figure on crevice areas. And the open-cell voltage, at which corrosion reaction initiates, was influenced by the purity of copper, but not their manufacturing method in this experiment. Therefore, it was convinced that there is no crevice corrosion for the cold sprayed copper in KURT underground environment.

  • Raney nickel was used as catalyst in the hydrogen electrode for an alkaline fuel cell. The hydrogen electrode manufactured with the Raney nickel catalyst which was sintered at $700^{\circ}C$ was found to have the highest electrode performance. Using the Raney nickel powder of average particle size $90{\AA}$ for the electrode, the current density which had been measured was $450mA/cm^2$ at $80^{\circ}C$ using 6N KOH solution as an electrolyte. The effects of PTFE addition were investigated with CO-chemisorption, polarization curves and Tafel slope. CO-chemisorption had shown the optimum value when the Raney nickel was mixed with 5wt% of PTFE, but from the current density and Tafel slope at porous Raney nickel electrode, the appropriate value of PTFE addition was 10wt%. Recommendable Ni and Al portion for Raney nickel was 60 : 40 and loading amount was $0.25g/cm^2$. Also the influence of pressing pressure for manufacturing catalytic layer and for junction with gas diffusion layer was examined. The morphology of catalyst surface was investigated with SEM. The influence of reactivation time and heat-treatment temperature were also studied.

  • The artificial increase in the solar intensity incident on solar cells using lenses or mirrors can allow solar cells to generate equivalent power with a lower cost. There are two types of concentration optics for solar energy conversion. One is to use mirrors, and the other is to use Fresnel lenses. The gains that can be achieved with a Fresnel lens or a parabolic mirror are compared. The result showed the gains are comparable and the two configurations were developed competitively. In application areas of Fresnel lenses as solar concentrators, several variations of design were devised and tested. Some PV systems still use commercially available flat Fresnel lenses as concentrators. A convex linear Fresnel lens to improve the concentration ratio and the efficiency is devised and flat linear Fresnel lens in thermal energy collection is utilized. In this study, we designed and optimized flat Fresnel lens and the 'light pipe' to develop 500X concentrated solar PV system. In the process, we compare the transmission efficiencies according to groove types. We performed rigorous ray tracing simulation of the flat Fresnel lenses. The computer aided simulation showed the 'grooves in case' has the better efficiency than that of 'grooves out case'. Based on the ray-trace results we designed and manufactured sample Fresnel lenses. The optical performance were measured and compared with ray-trace results. Finally, the optical efficiency was measured to be above 75%. All the design and manufacturing were performed based on that InGaP/InGaAs/Ge triple junction solar cell is used to convert the photon energy to electrical power. Field test will be made and analyzed in the near future.

  • Lab-on-a-disc is a circular disc shape of cartridge that can be used for blood-based liquid biopsy to diagnose an early stage of cancer. Currently, liquid biopsies are regarded as a time-consuming process, and require sophisticated skills to precisely separate cell-free DNA (cfDNA) and circulating tumor cells (CTCs) floating in the bloodstream for accurate diagnosis. However, by applying the lab-on-a-disc to liquid biopsy, the entire process can be operated automatically. To do so, the lab-on-a-disc should be designed to prevent blood leakage during the centrifugation, transport, and dilution of blood inside the lab-on-a-disc in the process of liquid biopsy. In this study, the main components of lab-on-a-disc for liquid biopsy are fabricated by injection molding for mass production, and ultrasonic welding is employed to ensure the bonding strength between the components. To guarantee accurate ultrasonic welding, the flatness of the components is optimized numerically by using the response surface methodology with four main injection molding processing parameters, including the mold & resin temperatures, the injection speed, and the packing pressure. The 27 times finite element analyses using Moldflow® reveal that the injection time and the packing pressure are the critical factors affecting the flatness of the components with an optimal set of values for all four processing parameters. To further improve the flatness of the lab-on-a-disc components for stable mass production, a quarter-disc shape of lab-on-a-disc with a radius of 75 mm is used instead of a full circular shape of the disc, and this significantly decreases the standard deviation of flatness to 30% due to the reduced overall length of the injection molded components by one-half. Moreover, it is also beneficial to use a quarter disc shape to manage the deviation of flatness under 3 sigma limits.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the quality characteristics of makgeolli that was produced by using different percentages (control, 3%, 5%, 7%, 9% by rice weight) of Angelica gigas Nakai water extracts during fermentation at $25^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. Yeast cell count in makgeolli steadily increased and showed the highest value at day 4 of fermentation, since then, the count decreased consistently. The final alcohol contents were higher than 15% in all samples. Soluble contents and antioxidation activity were significantly increased in percentage as Angelica water extracts increased (p<0.05). As the amount of Angelica water extracts increased, total polyphenol contents increased as well. Soluble contents and total polyphenol contents were increased according to the fermentation period. Total acidity increased up to day 3, but slowly decreased afterwards. However, the pH rapidly decreased by day 3, but then increased steadily. Reducing sugar amount was increased sharply by day 2 of fermentation and then, diminished gradually. Hunter's color value was not significantly different among samples however, they were significantly different between day 2 samples of fermentation and day 3 or more samples (p<0.05). In sensory evaluations, the sample produced using 5% Angelica water extracts received the highest score in herbal flavor, herbal taste, sourness, sweetness, and overall acceptance. Makgeolli using Angelica gigas Nakai water extracts showed excellent characteristics in antioxidative activity and higher total polyphenol content. Makgeolli produced using 5% Angelica water extracts received the highest score in sensory evaluation. Therefore, makgeolli produced using 5% Angelica water extracts was considered to be the most suitable for manufacturing makgeolli.

  • This research has been carried out to investigate the characteristics of cellulose nanofibers manufactured from domestic lignocellulosic materials by mechanical grinding method. The continuous grinding process was effective for loosening cell wall structure, with increasing grinding time, much smaller nanofibers were observed. Filtration time was linearly increased with increasing grinding time for all experimental materials. Relative crystallinity of cellulose was not changed by grinding process, but increased by delignification treatment. Tensile property of fiber sheets was drastically improved with increasing grinding time. Fibers sheets obtained from delignified cone stalks showed an excellent tensile strength. Consequently, it is considered that this study presented some effective information for manufacturing cellulose nanofibers with domestic plantation resources.
