Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the quantity and quality of the mandibular anterior alveolar bone in terms of alveolar width, density, and total alveolar height (TAH) based on dental status, gender, and age. Additionally, this study aimed to quantitatively evaluate the available alveolar height for graft harvesting (AHGH) and examine its variability based on the aforementioned factors. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cone-beam computed tomographic study included a total of 100 subjects. On the basis of gender, dental status, and age, the scans were divided into 3 primary groups and 8 subgroups. The mandibular alveolar width and density were measured 5 mm mesial to the mental foramen bilaterally and at the midline. The TAH was measured at the midline, and the AHGH was measured as the midline distance between 5 mm apical to the root of the canines and 5 mm superior to the lower border. Results: The mandibular alveolar width was statistically similar between dentulous and edentulous patients (P>0.05). A significantly greater density was observed at the midline in edentulous patients (P<0.05). The TAH was significantly greater in edentulous male patients than in edentulous female patients (P<0.05). Dentulous and male patients had significantly greater AHGH than edentulous and female patients, respectively (P<0.05). Conclusion: Based on the data evaluated in this study, it can be concluded that the mandibular symphyseal area has adequate bone quality and quantity for bone graft harvesting for dental implant therapy.

This study was performed to investigate the changes of mandibular condyle by low calcium diet and the effects of irradiation on the bone in osteoporotic state. In order to carry out this experiment, 80 seven-week old Sprague-Dawley strain rats weighing about 150 gm were selected and equally divided into one experimental group of 40 rats and one control group with the remainder. The experimental group and the control group were then subdivided into two group and exposed to irradiation. The two irradiation groups received a single dose of 20 Gy on the jaw area only and irradiated with a cobalt-60 teletherapy unit. The rats in the control and experimental groups were serially terminated by fours on the 3rd, the 7th, the 14th, and the 21st day after irradiation. After termination, both sides of the dead rats mandibular condyle were removed and fixed with 10% neutral formalin. The bone mineral density of mandibular condyle was measured by use of dual energy X-ray bone densitometer(model DDX-alpha, Lunn Corp., U. S. A.). The mandibular condyle was radiographed with Hitex HA-80(Hitex Co., Japan). Thereafter, the obtained radiographs were observed, and the mandibular condyle was further decalcified and embedded in paraffin as the general method. The specimen sectioned and stained with hematoxylin-eosin, PAS and Rabbit Anti-Human Tumor Necrosis Factor-a observed by a light microscope. The obtained results were as follows: 1. In the non-irradiated group with the low calcium diet, the bone mineral density of the condyle was markedly decreased after 14 days, and decrease the number of trabeculae of the condyle and resorption of the calcified cartilaginous zone were observed after 3 days. On microscopic observations, the number nd size of trabeculae were decreased after 7 days of experiment. 2. In the irradiated group with the low calcium diet, the bone mineral density of the condyle was markedly decreased after 14 days and resorption of the calcified cartilaginous zone and decrease the number and coarse of the trabeculae of the condyle were observed. These findings were extended rather than in non-irradiated group with low calcium diet. On microscopic observations, many osteoclasts were detected and the number and size of trabeculae were somewhat decreased after 7 days. Also there was degenerative changes of tissues of bone marrow on the 14th day but that condition was restored on the 21st day of experiment. 3. In the irradiated group with normal diet, the bone mineral density of the condyle was somewhat decreased with times and degree of decrease of the number of trabeculae was somewhat larger than in the non-irradiated group with normal diet. On microscopic observations, the tissues of bone marrow were atrophic and degenerative changes but that condition was restored on the 21st day of experiment. 4. In immunocytochemical findings, in the irradiated and non-irradiated groups with low calcium diet, negative or partial positive response to TNF was observed, but positive response in the normal diet groups.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether panoramic radiographs were useful in predicting osteoporosis. Materials and Methods: 50 postmenoposal women between the age of 41.8 and 78.5 were classified as normal and osteoporosis groups according to the bone mineral density of lumbar vertebrae. Panoramic radiographs were taken. Age, body mass index, remaining mandibular teeth, mandibular cortical thickness and morphology, and fractal dimensions at periapical areas of mandibular first molars were evaluated to differentiate the two groups. Results: The age of osteoporotic group was statistically significantly higher than that of normal group (p<0.05), but not the body mass index or number of remaining mandibular teeth. The mean fractal dimension of osteoporotic group was $1.391{\pm}0.085$, and was significantly lower than that of the normal group, which was $1.523{\pm}0.725$ (p<0.01). Thick mandibular cortical thickness was common in normal group, whereas thin or very thin mandibular cortical thickness was common in osteoporotic group and the difference was significant (p < 0.05). C2 pattern was common in normal group followed by C1, whereas C2 was common in osteoporotic group followed by C3. The difference was statistically significant (p< 0.0 1). Conclusion: Age, mandibular cortical thickness and shape, fractal dimension on panoramic radiographs were useful in predicting osteoporosis.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the simulated effects of axial and off-axial vertical loads at the implant/bone interface and the stress distribution according to the bone density of a single-unit dental implant in the cylinder and square thread implants by 3D FEA The implants were placed in the mandibular model with 25mm in height, 15mm in width and 20mm in length; then the mandibular bone density was classified into the bone type : I, II III and IV. In addition, the force were applied into 0mm, 2mm, 4mm away from the center of the implants.
The relationale for recording mandibular movement is to accurately adjust an articulator. Techniques to record mandibular movement include radiographic interpretation, extraoral tracing, and intraoral recording materials. This study was performed to compare the concylar guidance inclination and Bennett shift(immediate & progressive side shift)obtained by using an electronic pantograph, pantograph and wax interocclusal records in Korean. Ten adults who have normal occlusion and are free of TMJ dysfunction were selected and clutches were constructed. At first Pantronic survey was performed three times by using an kinematic hinge axis according to manufacturer's direction. Next pantographic survey was performed three times and the articulator was adjusted with each pantographic recording. And then maxillary cast was attached to the articulator with pantographic as a face-bow and the mandibular cast was mounted to the articulator with centric relation record. Three protrusive, three left lateral and three right lateral wax interocclusal records were taken on the subjects and the articulator was adjusted with each interocclusal record. Protrusive condylar inclination, lateral condylar inclination, immediate side shift and progressive side shift obtained by using electronic pantograph, pantograph and wax interocclusal record were compared and analized. The results were as follows; 1. The average left and right protrusive and orbiting condylar inclination($33.7^{\circ},\;37.1^{\circ},\;40.6^{\circ},\;43.5^{\circ}$) record with Pantronic was significantly greater than that recorded with other methods. 2. The average left and right protrusive and orbiting condylar inclination($24.8^{\circ},\;27.0^{\circ},\;31.4^{\circ},\;32.4^{\circ}$)recorded with wax interocclusal record was less than that of other methods. 3. The average left and right immediate side shift(0.57mm,0.44mm)recorded with wax interocclusal record was greater than that of other methods and the average left rigtht immmediate side shift(0.30mm,0.41mm)recorded with Pantronic was significantly greater than that recorded with pantograph(0.11mm,0.20mm). 4. The average variance of wax interocclusal was signivicantly higher than that of other methods.

Introduction: Bone density is one of the important factors for the long term success of endosseous implants. The bone density varies from site to site and from patient to patient. A preoperative evaluation of the bone density is quite useful to oral surgeons for planning dental implantation. More accurate information on the bone density will help surgeons identify suitable implant sites, thereby increase the success rate of dental implantation. This study examined the correlation between the bone density measured preoperatively by computed tomography (CT) and the implant primary stability measured by resonance frequency analysis. Furthermore, the effects of the implant sites, gender, age and generalized systemic disorder patients on the bone density and primary implant stability were examined. Materials and Methods: One hundred and fourteen patients were selected. None of the patients had undergone a tooth extraction or bone graft history in the previous year. Preoperatively, the patients underwent CT scanning to evaluate the Hounsfield unit (HU), and resonance frequency analysis (RFA) was used to evaluate the implant primary stability at the time of implant installation. All implants were 4.0 mm diameter and 11.5 mm length US II. All patients were recorded and the HU and implant stability quotient (ISQ) value were evaluated according to the sites, gender and age. Results: The highest HU values were found in the mandibular anterior site ($827.6{\pm}151.4$), followed by the mandibular molar site ($797{\pm}135.1$), mandibular premolar site ($753.8{\pm}171.2$), maxillary anterior site ($726.3{\pm}154.4$), maxillary premolar site ($656.7{\pm}173.8$) and maxillary molar site ($621.5{\pm}164.9$). The ISQ value was the highest in the mandibular premolar site ($81.5{\pm}2.4$) followed by the mandibular molar site ($80.0{\pm}5.7$), maxillary anterior site ($77.4{\pm}4.1$), mandibular anterior site ($76.4{\pm}11.9$), maxillary premolar site ($74.2{\pm}14.3$) and maxillary molar site ($73.7{\pm}7.4$). The mean HU and ISQ value were similar in females and males. (HU: P=0.331, ISQ: P=0.595) No significant difference was also found in the age group respectively. However, the correlation coefficients between the variables showed a closed correlation between the HU and ISQ value. Conclusion: These results showed close correlation between the bone density (HU) and primary stability value (ISQ) at the time of implant installation (Correlation coefficients=0.497, P<0.01). These results strengthen the hypothesis that it might be possible to predict and quantify the initial implant stability and bone density from a presurgical CT diagnosis.
Purpose : To determine the head position that the superior border of the mandibular canal as well as mental foramen can be more clearly visualized in panoramic radiography Materials and Methods : Ten dry mandibles were radiographed bilaterally using PM 2002 CC panoramic machine. A 20 mm thick aluminium filter was added to the slit collimator to obtain radiographs with acceptable density. The specimens were tilted by 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 degrees downward with and without radiopaque markers. Radiopaque markers were inserted into the mandibular canals and the mental canals of each side of the specimens to serve as reference image when assessing the radiographs. The visibility of the mandibular canal and the mental foramen was estimated by 4 observers on all radiographs. The obtained results were analyzed statistically. Results: Mandibular canals were significantly more clearly visible in the radiographs with 4 and 6 degree downward position on both sides (P<0.05). Mental foramens were significantly more clearly visible in the radiographs with 4, 6, and 8 degree downward on right side and 6 degree downward on left side (P<0.05). There was not significant difference between right and left sides. Conclusion: Panoramic radiographs with 4 to 6 degree downward tilting could be valuable in locating the mandibular canal as well as the mental foramen.
PURPOSE. The purpose of the study was to assess the influence of build orientations and density of support structures on the trueness of the 3D printed removable partial denture (RPD) frameworks. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A maxillary Kennedy class III and mandibular class I casts were 3D scanned and used to design and produce two 3D virtual models of RPD frameworks. Using digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing, 47 RPD frameworks were fabricated at 3 different build orientations (100, 135 and 150-degree angles) and 2 support structure densities. All frameworks were scanned and 3D compared to the original virtual RPD models by metrology software to check 3D deviations quantitatively and qualitatively. The accuracy data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA for build orientation comparison and independent sample t-test for structure density comparison at (α = .05). Points study analysis targeting RPD components and representative color maps were also studied. RESULTS. The build orientation of 135-degree angle of the maxillary frameworks showed the lowest deviation at the clasp arms of tooth 26 of the 135-degree angle group. The mandibular frameworks with 150-degree angle build orientation showed the least deviation at the rest on tooth 44 and the arm of the I-bar clasp of tooth 45. No significant difference was seen between different support structure densities. CONCLUSION. Build orientation had an influence on the accuracy of the frameworks, especially at a 135-degree angle of maxillary design and 150-degree of mandibular design. The difference in the support's density structure revealed no considerable effect on the accuracy.
To demonstrate possible influences of general bone density on the mandible, histomorphometric analysis was carried out in mandibles and iliac bones and the correlation of the two bone densities was tested. Comparison of bony density in women and men over 60 years in the mandible was carried out too. Quantitative computed tomography(QCT) was taken in cross-section of mandibles at the same site where histomorphometric analysis was peformed to evaluate the reliability of QCT. The analysis included 40 cadavers with no known diseases affecting the bones. The subjects consisted of 15 females and 25 males with a mean age of 60.3 years. Spearman correlation analysis and Wilcoxon rank sum test was performed. The results were as follows. 1. There was statistically no correlation between the mandible and iliac bone in the values of corrected cortical width(CCW), cortical porosity(POR) in cortex, and total bone volume(TBV), mean trabecular plate thickness(MTPT), mean trabecular plate density(MTPD), and mean trabecular plate separation(MTPS) in trabecular bone. 2. Comparison of women and men over 60 years, men had statistically higher bone density than women except fir POR of buccal and lingual cortex, and WTPD of alveolar trabeculae in mandible. 3. There was statistically significant correlation between TBV of trabecular bone and CT No., but not between POR and CT No. in mandible. According to the results above, there was no correlation between mandible and iliac bone density and between mandibular bony density and age. Further studies are required to support the results. A more noninvasive method to be able to measure the bone density of mandible should be developed and it is necessary to accumulate data on the normal values of bone density of mandible according to age and sex. Further study should be carried out about QCT to measure mandibular bony density using QCT.
Purpose : This study was to determine the relationship between age and the mandibular cortical bone thickness on panoramic radiograph. Materials and Methods : Panoramic radiographs of 360 patients (180 men and 180 women) over 20 years old, who visited the Chonbuk National University Hospital from January to December in 2007, were assessed. The subjects were divided into 5 age groups. Five indices such as cortical bone thickness at the gonion (GI), antegonion (AI), and below the mental foramen (MI), the panoramic mandibular index (PMI), the mandibular cortical index (MCI) were measured on panoramic radiographs. Results : All five indices including GI, AI, MI, PMI, and MCI showed significant differences between third decade and over 8 decade groups (p<0.05). PMI, MI and GI showed significant differences with gender statistically (p<0.05). Conclusion : The mandibular cortical bone thickness showed negative correlation with age, and the value of the thickness (PMI, MI, and GI) was greater in men than in women.
