The effects of liquid pig manure (LM) on the yield and quality of rice as well as soil chemical properties were determined in the field of sandy loam soil under the different fertilizer management. Treatments consisted of 100%, 130% and 160% N application rates of liquid manure as calculated on the basis of the recommended rate of nitrogen (9 kg N/10a) for rice cultivation. Chemical fertilizer (CF) was used as control. Concentrations of T-N and T-P in paddy water were measured by 5-day intervals up to 20days after application. LM treatments significantly increased T-N concentrations in paddy water proportionally with increasing rates of LM (13.2 to 25.7 mg/L). Similarly Total-P content in paddy water was increased right after LM applications but was well below the quality standard of wastewater and manure. Plant height and tillers in 100% and 130% N LM treatments were lower than those in CF control. In the 160% LM treatment, however, plant height and numbers of tillers were higher than those in the CF control. Yields in 100% LM and 160% LM plots were decreased by 3 and 5%, respectively, as compared with 422 kg per 10a in the CF plot. Rice protein contents were similar between 100% LM and CF control (about 6.8%) but it was increased to 7.2% and 7.7% in 130% LM and 160% LM treatments, respectively. Toyo-taste value in the 100% LM treatment was higher than in CF control plot. The proportions of perfect grain of the brown rice were lower in 130% LM and 160% LM treatments than that in CF control. Soil organic matter content, heavy metal and exchangeable cations were highest in the 160% LM plot. Thus considering yield and quality of rice and heavy metals contents in soil, 130% N basal application of liquid manure can be recommended for rice cultivation in this experiment.

This study was carried out to investigate the different DIF (day/night temperature differential) treatments on early growth of sweet pepper plants (Capsicum annuum L.) after planting. The DIF treatments were thus as follows. DIF levels are DIF-6 ($20-26^{\circ}C$) and DIF 0 ($23^{\circ}C$), DIF 3 ($24.5-21.5^{\circ}C$) and DIF 6 ($26-20^{\circ}C$). The DIF 3 and DIF 6 treatments significantly increased plant height of the sweet pepper plants during ten weeks after planting compared to DIF-6 and DIF 0. Leaf area per plant of DIF 3 treatment constantly increased and the level was greatest leaf area at ten weeks after planting. Fresh weight per plant treated with DIF-6 was lower and was reduced 74-77% range compared to other treatments. DIF 0 and DIF 3 treatments significantly affected dry weight and percentage of dry matter compared to DIF-6 and DIF 6. Especially DIF 6 treatment significantly decreased from eight weeks after planting. Percentage of dry matter of the leaf treated with DIF 0 and DIF 3 consistently increased from six weeks after planting, however, DIF-6 and DIF 6 treatments dramatically decreased from eight weeks after planting. High levels of DIF management cause growth retardant on early growth of sweet pepper plants, especially when night temperature is higher than day temperature, plants are indicated to be greater growth retardant.
This study explored spatiotemporal variability of water quality in correspondence with hydrometeorological factors in the five stations of Paldang Reservoir located in the Han River during 4 years from May 2012 to December 2015. Variability of basic water quality factors were largely related with seasonal fluctuations of hydrology. Temperature stratification occurred in the deep dam station, and prolonged hypoxia was observed during the draught year. Nitrogen nutrients were increased with decreasing inflow in which changing pattern of $NH_4$ reversed to $NO_3$ by the effect of treated wastewater effluent. Phosphorus increase was manifest during the period of high inflow or severe drought. Chl-a variation was reversely related with both flow change and AGP(algal growth potential) variations. Our study demonstrated that water quality variability in Paldang Reservoir was largely attributed to both natural and operational changes of inflow and outflow (including water intake) based on major pollution source of the treated wastewater (total amount of $472{\times}10^3m^3d^{-1}$) entering to the water system from watershed. In the process of water quality variability, meteorological (e.g., flood, typhoon, abnormal rainfall, scorching heat of summer) and hydrological factors (inflow and discharge) were likely to work dynamically with nutrients pulse, dilution, absorption, concentration and sedimentation. We underline comprehensive limnological study related to hydro-meteorolology to understand short- and long-term water quality variability in river-type large reservoir and suggest the necessity of P-free wastewater treatment for the effective measure of reducing pollution level of Paldang drinking water resource.

In this study, the transfer rate of wild type Listeria mon, ytogenes (LM) was investigated to establish the standard of safety management during pork meat pr, essing for meat to meat and meat to food contact surfaces contamination at 5 and $10^{\circ}C$. The transfer rate of LM from meat to meat during the pr, essing increased from 0.02% after 30 min to 0.42% after 120 min at $5^{\circ}C$, while for conveyor belt and stainless steel, it decreased from 0.015% and 0.013% after 30 min to 0.002% and 0.0003% after 120 min at $5^{\circ}C$, respectively (p < 0.05). When temperature increased to $10^{\circ}C$, the transfer rates of LM from meat to meat, conveyor belt and stainless steel were the highest at 60 min exposure, and all decreased after 120 min. In reverse, the transfer rate from food contact surface to pork meat was significantly higher than that from pork meat to food contact surface (p < 0.01). Also, the transfer rate to conveyor belt was significantly higher than stainless steel (p < 0.05) and it was highest at 30 min exposure time in both 5 and $10^{\circ}C$. This study indicates that the transfer and adherence rates of LM are influenced by the contact time and temperature. Consequently, these results were utilized to develop a predictive model with a high level of confidence which can lead to prevent cross-contamination during pork meat processing.

In the present study, a variety of polylactide (PLA) articles (n = 211) were tested for migration of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) into the food simulant (4% v/v acetic acid). Pb, Cd, and As were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Migration tests were performed at $70^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The amounts of Pb, Cd, and As increased at $100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min compared with levels at $70^{\circ}C$. However, the migration at both conditions was very low. The maximum level of Pb at $100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min corresponded to 1% of the migration limit. The estimated daily intakes (EDI) based on safety evaluation ranged from $2.5{\times}10^{-5}$ to $2.0{\times}10^{-3}{\mu}g/kg\;bw/day$ for Pb, Cd, and As. The EDI calculated from migration of Pb at $100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min in PLA was the maximum value, $2.0{\times}10^{-3}{\mu}g/kg\;bw/day$, which corresponded to 0.055% of provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI, $25{\mu}g/kg\;bw/week$). The data from this study represent a valuable source for science-based safety control and management of hazardous heavy metals migrating from polylactide food contact materials.
For our survey of insecticidal resistance of Palm thrips (Thrips palmi Karny), we established the discriminating time (DT) and concentration (DC) of nine insecticides, and we conducted a bioassay about seven local populations via leaf-dipping methods. The discriminating times of the recommended concentration (RC) were 24 h at emamectin benzoate EC and spinetoram SC, 48 h at chlorfenapyr EC, 72 h at spinosad SC, cyantraniliprole EC, acetamiprid WP, dinotefuran WG, imidacloprid WP and thiacloprid SC after treatment. The DC estimated the concentration which showed the difference within the mortalities of these local populations. The DCs were emamectin benzoate EC $0.013mg\;L^{-1}$ (RC, $10.8mg\;L^{-1}$), spinetoram SC $0.125mg\;L^{-1}$ (RC, $25.0mg\;L^{-1}$), chlorfenapyr EC $0.25mg\;L^{-1}$ (RC, $50.0mg\;L^{-1}$), spinosad SC $0.083mg\;L^{-1}$ (RC, $50.0mg\;L^{-1}$) and cyantraniliprole EC $5.0mg\;L^{-1}$ (RC, $50.0mg\;L^{-1}$), and DCs of neonicotinoids were their RCs, that is, acetamiprid WP (RC, $40.0mg\;L^{-1}$), dinotefuran WG (RC, $20.0mg\;L^{-1}$), imidacloprid WP(RC, $50.0mg\;L^{-1}$) and thiacloprid SC (RC, $50.0mg\;L^{-1}$). From our investigation into the resistance of the local populations with DT and DC application, the neonicotinoid insecticides have shown a high resistant level for all the local populations, and the other insecticides have demonstrated low or non-resistance. In the use of neonicotinoid insecticides to control Palm thrips, one must take caution. As a result, the establishment of DT and DC in the single dose bioassay method was helpful for surveying the insecticide response dynamics and the development of an insecticide resistance management strategy.
The purpose of this study is to present basic data for an improvement of school foodservice by identifying students' preference level for school meal menu. A survey was carried out in two high schools provided with different types of consignment service in Daegu. Study subjects were consisted of 100 high school students from a school with on-site service and 119 students from the other school with external transporting service. More than half of students (54.2% of male and 68.3% of female) had normal weights while 13.5% of male and 30.1% of female students had underweights. 'Taste' and 'family' were the most important factors in meal choices and in eating habits, respectively of all the study subjects. Students who answered to have unbalanced diet (33.0%) were less in school with on-site service than those (56.1%) with external transporting service. Compared with on-site service, preferences for meats fruit and milk were higher and as cooking method, preference for blanching lower but stew, roasting and frying higher in the school with external transporting service. Various types of cooking methods and food materials were better accepted by the students with on-site service than those with external transporting service who preferred meat more exclusively regardless of cooking methods of main dish. Most kinds of kimchi was less liked by the students with external transporting service. It is concluded that low preference for most menus provided by the external transporting service is attributed by limitation in food materials, cooking methods and maintenance of food temperature. The limitation could be overcome by more intensive efforts for developing menus and using more efficient facilities and ultimately by changing meal service system in cooperation with school administrators, dietitians and parents.

This study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of chlorine dioxide on reducing E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes on broccoli served in foodservice institutions. Broccoli samples inoculated with $10^6$ CFU/mL of E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes were treated with chlorine dioxide. Treatments with 5, 10, and 20 ppm for 1, 5, and 10 min were not sufficient in controlling E. coli O157:H7 on broccoli. L. monocytogenes were effectively reduced by $2.19{\sim}2.48log\;CFU/g\;and\;3.31{\sim}3.87log\;CFU/g$ with 10 and 20 ppm chlorine dioxide for 1, 5, and 10 min treatment, respectively, compared with the control. E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes population were significantly negatively correlated with concentration and treatment time of chlorine dioxide. These results show that the use of chlorine dioxide was effective in sanitizing L. monocytogenes on broccoli and the level of concentration was more associated with populations of E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes than treatment time of chlorine dioxide on broccoli.
A new commercial rice variety "Donghaejinmi" is a japonica rice (Oryza sativa L.) with lodging resistance and high grain quality. It has been developed by the rice breeding team of Yeongdeog Substation, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA. This variety was derived from a cross between "Milyang 64" as a resistance source of brown planthopper (Bph) and "Milyang 165" as grain quality source. The donor parent, "Milyang64" has been backcrossed three times with recurrent parent, "Milyang165" and selected by the pedigree breeding method. The pedigree of "Donghaejinmi", designated as "Yeongdeog 41" in 2003, was YR21259-B-B-68-1. It has a short culm length with 69 cm and medium-late growth time. This variety is resistant to stripe virus and moderately resistant to leaf blast disease with durable resistance. It also has tolerance to unfavorable environment such as cold, dried wind and storm. Milled rice kernel of "Donghaejinmi" is translucent, clear in chalkness and good at eating quality in panel test. The merit of this variety is high head rice ratio, which is essential element to produce an article of superior quality rice brand. The yield potential of "Donhaejinmi" in milled rice is about 6.05 MT/ha at ordinary fertilizer level of local adaptability test. This cultivar would be adaptable to Yeongnam inland plains and eastern costal area of Yeongnam province.
Soybean farms in Changnyeong were selected for hazard analysis to establish the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) model of soybean, and physical, chemical(heavy metal) and biological(sanitary indications, foodborne pathogens) hazard analysis for cultivation environment (soil, water) was carried out. First, bow which is able to be mixed in soil and water was confirmed as physical hazard. Levels (Cd:0.01~0.103, Cu:0.001~6.036, As:0.006~3.045, Hg:ND~0.041, Pb:0.003~3.952, $Cr^{+6}$:0.007~0.496, Zn:0.001~66.500, Ni:0.003~18.010) of heavy metals in soil and water were appropriate for GAP criteria. In biological hazard, APC and coliform in soil were detected at the levels of $6.0{\pm}0.3$ and $3.6{\pm}1.6$ log CFU/g, and levels of water were $3.5{\pm}0.7$ and $1.9{\pm}0.7$ log CFU/mL, while E. coli wasn't detected in all sample. However, coliform in water wasn't appropriate for criteria, and E. coli O157 was detected about 22% in some farms, so it needs ways to prevent contamination by human and animals excrements. In conclusion, it needs proper management to prevent cross-contamination of hazards although physical and chemical hazard level were appropriate for GAP criteria while biological hazard wasn't.
