  • Morphological differences were studied using the analysis of variance between various partial length and shell length of three populations of Saxidomus purpuratus on the Korean waters. The Relative growth equations, that is, SH-SL, SW-SL, TW-SL of S. purpuratus by sex were estimated. The analysis of variance of four morphological characters proved that each population has no sexual differences (p>0.01). But the three populations are significantly different in morphological characters (p<0.01).

  • A study on the seasonal changes of the benthic macroinvertebrate community was performed on the intertidal rocky shores ao eastern coast of Cheju island and U-do throughout four seasons from october 1991 to August 1992. The macroinvertebrates were composed of 10 phyla, 18 classes, 39 orders, 94 families and 201 species. the number of speecies were 183 in summer, 147 in autumn, 138 in spring and 94 in winter, respectively. The total wpecies collected throuhout the study period were 193 species in U-do and 151 species in the eastern coast of Cheju Island. Nodilittorina exigua was the most dominant species in all seasons, followed by Monodonta neritoides in spring, autumn and winter, and pollicipes mitella in summer. U-do was higher in species diversity and richness and lower in evenness than the eastern coast. Species diversity and richness were higher in summer than any other seasons in lower intertidal zones. Community dominance indices, however, were significantly higher in upper intertidal zones than in lower intertidal zones.

  • Clams were collected from mouth part of Mangeong Gang(river) of which heavy metals were heavily contaminated. Scapharca subcrenata, one of the clams, were fed to mice for 1-2 months with regular food stuffs. Eventhough difference of body weight was recognized between the experimental group and normal diat group, accumulation of heavy metals examined, cadmium was found 1.16 $\mu\textrm{g}$/gm in liver, 3.31 $\mu\textrm{g}$/gm in kidney and 0.21 $\mu\textrm{g}$/gm in blood of experimental group at 60th day, whereas 0.14 $\mu\textrm{g}$/gm, 0.35$\mu\textrm{g}$/gm and 0$\mu\textrm{g}$/gm respectively in normal diet group ate tje same period. No specific histo pathological finding was found in brain and kidney, although slighr fatty change and focal necrosis were found in liver tissues of the experimental group in second month.

  • This study examines the morphological features of larval and postlarval shells of the paedomorphic bivalve Crenella decussata Montagu, 1808 from the Sea of Japan. During the early morphogenesis of the shell of C. decussata the following characteristics appear: prodissoconch I -the anterior and posterior provincular teeth, a broad primary ligament pit located on the chondrophore; nepioconch - the anterior and posterior juvenile teeth, primary lateral teeth, fine commarginal and radial sculpture. Larvae of C. decussata distinctly differ from other mytilid larvae by a D-shaped shell, absence of umbo, astraight hinge margin, and homogeneous fine-grained sculpture without co-marginal lines of growth. These shell characters indicate lecithotrophic development of this species. Some morphostructures are revealed which might be used in crenellin taxonomy.

  • We examined physiological responses related to the survival, oxygen consumption and filtration rate of the blood cockle, Tegillaarca granosa as a result of salinity changes. The 44-day $LS_{50}$ (median lethal salinity) at $10^{\circ}C$ for adult and juvenile was 15.8 (confidence limits 13.5-18.2 psu) and 16.2 (confidence limits 14.1-18.4 psu) psu respectively, whereas the 11-day $LS_{50}$ at $25^{\circ}C$ for adult and juvenile was 16.8 psu (confidence limits 12.9-21.2 psu) and 22.4 (confidence limits 20.5-24.7 psu) psu respictively. In conditions of decreasing salinity, Oxygen consumption and filtration rates decreased or varied irregularly as salinity decreased. The results of this study could prove important in investigating causes of mass mortality and managing shellfish aquaculture farms.

  • Shell of oyster has a function of shelter from predator as well as growth potential. We investigated the physicochemical characteristics of oyster shells from three difference oyster farms. The shells from Wando waters characterized high stability of nanostructure, ticker nacreous layer, high thermal decomposition temperature and low content of sulphur as well. These results represent that Wando coast is pristine water for oyster farming.

  • Molluscan drugs have been traditionally used as a folk medicine mainly in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan and Korea. Medicinal mollusks commonly used in the Far Eastern countries including Korea were investigated in this study, through a search of old and modern Chinese and Japanese literatures. A total of 63 medicinal species were listed: 5 species of two families in land snails, 2 species of one family in freshwater gastropods, 9 species of three families in freshwater bivalves, 23 species of five families in marine gastropods, and 24 species of five families in marine bivalves. Of 63 species searched, 22 species are occurring in Korea: 1 species of one family in freshwater gastropods, 4 species of three families in freshwater bivalves, 7 species of four families in marine gastropods, and 10 species of four families in marine bivalves. At least, medicinal mollusks occurring in Korea should be conserved preferentially to keep our natural resources and biodiversity.

  • A horizontal starch gal electrophoresis for enzyme proteins extracted from 3 species of Korean planorbid snails; Gyraulus convexiusculus, Hippeutis cantori and Segmentina hemisphaerula was carried out in order to elucidate their genetic relationships. The results from 12 enzymes employed in three different kinds of buffer systems are summarized as follows:1) Two loci from each enzyme of aldehyde oxidase, esterase, glucose phosphate isomerase. isocitrate dehydrogenase, leucine aminopeptidase, malate dehyogenase, peptidase and xanthine oxidase were detected, and only one locus was observed from each of the following four enzymes: 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, glyceraldehyde-phosphate dehydrogenase, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase and glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase.2) Most of loci in 3 species of planorbid snails employed showed homozygous and monomorphic banding patterns and some of them were specifis as genetic markers among different species. However, a few of loci (EST-1. EST-2 and GPI-2)showed polymorphic banding patterns. 3)Hippeutis cantori and Segmentina hemisphaerula were more closely clustered in a dendrogram with the genetic iddentity value of 0.431, and these two species were lineated with Gyraulus convexiusculus as another cluster at the value of 0.294.In summarizing the above results, three species of Korean planorbid snails employed in this study mostly showed monomorphic enzyme protein banding patterns and genetic differences specific among 3 species.
