  • In recent years, the relationship of language maintenance to culture and identity has received increased attention in the language acquisition and education fields. Korean immigrants in the U.S. form one of the biggest Asian groups and their language and cultural maintenance has been a major issue for both parents and ESL teachers. The present research is designed to investigate the cultural and social identities as well as the psychological investment factors that contribute to heritage language maintenance. Three Korean immigrant families in a small Midwest university town in the U.S. were surveyed and later interviewed. Issues and strategies concerning their children's Korean education in the U.S., coupled with the competing goal for the children to learn English were documented through parent interviews and interviews with school-aged focal children. Strategies and stances that facilitate or hinder both heritage and target language maintenance goals are presented along with participants' major reasons for heritage language maintenance in their homes and via Saturday schools. This work will assist ESL teachers and sociolinguists in situating both Korean student and parent goals in the context of shifting cultural and linguistic identities in countries where they have immigrated.

Methods: Data collection was conducted with 142 junior and senior nursing college students using structured self-reported questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis using SPSS 22.0. Results: There was a positive correlation between nursing professionalism, academic emotional adjustment, and college life adjustment. The significant predictors of overall college life adjustment were major satisfaction, nursing professionalism, and academic emotional regulation. The significant predictors of clinical practice adjustment were gender, major satisfaction, and nursing professionalism. Conclusion: When developing a program to improve college life adjustment in nursing college students, it is necessary to find ways to improve nursing professionalism and academic emotional regulation as well as major satisfaction.

  • Purpose: Topic modeling is a text mining technique that extracts concepts from textual data and uncovers semantic structures and potential knowledge frameworks within context. This study aimed to identify major keywords and network structures for each major topic to discern research trends in women's health nursing published in the Korean Journal of Women Health Nursing (KJWHN) using text network analysis and topic modeling. Methods: The study targeted papers with English abstracts among 373 articles published in KJWHN from January 2011 to December 2021. Text network analysis and topic modeling were employed, and the analysis consisted of five steps: (1) data collection, (2) word extraction and refinement, (3) extraction of keywords and creation of networks, (4) network centrality analysis and key topic selection, and (5) topic modeling. Results: Six major keywords, each corresponding to a topic, were extracted through topic modeling analysis: "gynecologic neoplasms," "menopausal health," "health behavior," "infertility," "women's health in transition," and "nursing education for women." Conclusion: The latent topics from the target studies primarily focused on the health of women across all age groups. Research related to women's health is evolving with changing times and warrants further progress in the future. Future research on women's health nursing should explore various topics that reflect changes in social trends, and research methods should be diversified accordingly.

  • The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate the influence of pre-service science teachers' selection of earth science I, II in the high school and their college major on their self-perceived attitude and academic achievement in general earth science lecture at university. The participants in the study were 273 who enrolled in the division of science education, college of education and took the general earth science lecture from 2012 to 2015. The data was analyzed with two-way ANOVA by using SPSS 23.0. The results indicated that there was no significant difference of students' attitude and examination difficulty in general earth science lecture between earth science major and other subject major. However, students who took earth science I and/or II in high school showed positive attitude toward the lecture and higher achievement scores than students who didn't take earth science I, II in their high school. The results of the study imply that it is essential to consider students' attitude toward science and achievement in pre-service science teacher education.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the general education contents for undergraduate students at engineering related departments through need analysis in order to develop creative and integral talents. For this study, the need analysis was conducted by using focus group interviews, Borich's educational need equation and the Locus for Focus Model, and highly ranked priorities on both methods proposed as the highest priorities. As a result, 'drawing up a letter of self-introduction and a portfolio', 'understanding fields', 'understanding careers related to the major', 'presentation skills', 'knowledge for certificated exams', 'method to deduct creative ideas' were high on the list of top five priorities. The selected items by Locus for Focus Model show that undergraduate students at engineering related departments need general education contents associated with career development and communication by priority.

  • Music and mathematics have a lot of structural similarities. Major and minor triads used importantly in music are in a relationship of inversion in which the sequence of the intervals is reversed, which is equivalent to reflection in mathematics. Geometrical expressions help understand structures in music as well as mathematics, and a diagram that shows tonal relationships in music is called Tonnetz. Relationships of reflection between major and minor triads can easily be understood by using Tonnetz, and also, transpositions can be expressed in translation. This study looks into existing Tonnetz and introduces S-Tonnetz newly formed by a mathematical principle.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze empirically the causes of high unemployment among the people with disabilities, focused on productivity and discrimination. In order to pursue such goal this study adopts human capital theory, screening theory, job contest theory, taste theory and statistical discrimination theory as theoretical background. The major findings are: (1) Among the human capital variables Education degree and job training are not statistically significant on employment. Only degree of activity limit has significant effect. (2) Among the discrimination related variables only discrimination experiences variable has negative effect on employment. (3) Between degree of activity limit and discrimination experiences, both have similar effect on employment. But the degree of activity limit can be thought as discrimination related element. Because' not giving resonable accommodation' is regarded discrimination in ADA or DDA. These mean that it is important for society to compel the employment of the disabled and to put focus on eliminating prejudice rather than accomplishing education and job training programs to improve the employment of the disabled. In order to accomplish this it is necessary to increase the levy for disabled persons' employment promotion of the disabled persons' employment promotion act and to establish the disability discrimination act. Also, integrated education starting from infancy is necessary. Education system should be changed, and Job training must focused on industry which demand more labor force.
