  • Background: Various factors can alter the efficacy of acupuncture treatment, such as the location of points, manipulations, depth of insertion, needle retention time, and needle type. In this study, the effect of needle diameter on the efficacy of acupuncture treatment was quantitatively evaluated. Methods: Five acupuncture needles of different diameters used in clinical practice were compared. Force on the porcine tissue phantom was measured using a sensor. Lifting-thrusting and twisting-rotating movements were performed using a needle insertion-measurement system. After repeated measurements, force magnitude was calculated and compared. Following this, we correlated needle diameter and force magnitude during lifting-thrusting and twisting-rotating movements. Results: The force magnitude was significantly altered between needle diameters during lifting-thrusting movements, as shown by a significant positive correlation between needle diameter and force magnitude. In contrast, there was no difference in force magnitude with different needle diameters during twisting-rotating movements. Conclusion: Needle diameter can significantly affect stimuli and force magnitude dependent upon the type of manipulation. Research into the effect of other needle type characteristics and stimulation method is necessary to fully elucidate the role of acupuncture needle choice in treatment efficacy.

  • This paper describes a circuit-level optimization of DFU(decoding function unit) for LDPC decoder which is used in wireless communication systems such as WiMAX and WLAN. The conventional DFU which is based on min-sum decoding algorithm needs conversions between two's complement values and sign-magnitude values, resulting in complex hardware. In this paper, a new design of DFU that is based on sign-magnitude arithmetic is proposed to achieve a simplified circuit and high-speed operation.

  • We have been conducting several studies on providing information to the public promptly as soon as earthquake occurs. Recently, JMA proposed a method for warning big earthquakes by observing the first 2 seconds after the first arrival. In this study, the envelope of the absolute value of the first 2 seconds after the first arrival is calculated, and then the relation of epicentral distance and slope of envelope, parameter B, is obtained. This result is applied to local magnitude equation of KMA, which then gives us a new magnitude equation from which can estimate the magnitude using maximum amplitude of P wave. We applied the method to two recent earthquakes; Uljin and Daegu. The results using only the vertical components show that the magnitudes are lower than those calculated by the local magnitude equation of KMA. However, when we apply the method to the 3 components of maximum displacements, the results corresponds with those obtained from the local magnitude equation.

  • We studied magnitude determination method using high-frequency energy radiation duration to calculate rapidly magnitude of large earthquakes that occurred around Japan. Fourteen earthquakes were analyzed using Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) data. We calculated duration of high-frequency energy radiation with 2~4 Hz band pass filter at each data and estimated magnitude. As a result, duration becomes longer as magnitude becomes larger and the magnitude estimated using regional earthquake data are similar to that using teleseismic data. Therefore when an earthquake occurs around Japan we will be able to estimate the magnitude in a relatively short time using KMA data and it may be possible to determine if the earthquake is large enough to produce tsunami.

  • In this paper, a gradient magnitude hardware architecture based on hardware folding design method is proposed for low power image feature extraction. For the hardware complexity reduction, the projection vector chracteristic of gradient magnitude is applied. The proposed hardware architecture can be implemented with the small degradation of the gradient magnitude data quality. The FPGA implementation result shows the 41% of logic elements and 62% embedded multiplier savings compared with previous work using Altera Cyclone VI (EP4CE115F29C7N) FPGA and Quartus II v16.0 environment.

  • Polymer materials have a lot of merits including the low cost and the easiness of forming. For these reasons they are widely using at many manufacturing industries. Microcellular foaming process appeared at MIT in 1980s to save a quantity of material and increase mechanical properties. There are many process variables in appling microcellular foaming process to the conventional injection molding process. They can be solved by using Axiomatic Design Method which is very useful design method for designing a new product. Its main character is scientific and analytical. The information about the thickness of cavity plays an important role in making an effective foam. The goal of this research is to design mold system for advance of foaming magnitude with axiomatic design method. There is a relation between the change of cavitys thickness and foaming magnitude made after inserting a gas. R/t is a conception that indicate proportion between radius and thickness of cavity in mold system. By means of SEM observation of side surface of cavity sample, foaming magnitude of polymer in microcellular foaming process is decreasing gradually as the value of R/t is increasing. In this paper, an advanced mold system was presented by mapping the relation between functional requirements and design parameters.

  • This paper proposes an analysis method based on the magnitude-phase dynamic theory for isolated power systems with static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs). The stability margin of an isolated power system is greatly reduced when a load is connected, due to the disadvantageous features of the self-excited induction generators (SEIGs). To analyze the control process for system stability and to grasp the dynamic characteristics in different timescales, the relationships between the active/reactive components and the phase/magnitude of the STATCOM output voltage are derived in the natural reference frame based on the magnitude/phase dynamic theory. Then STATCOM equivalent mechanical models in both the voltage time scale and the current time scale are built. The proportional coefficients and the integral coefficients of the control process are converted into damping coefficients, inertia coefficients and stiffness coefficients so that analyzing its controls, dynamic response characteristics as well as impacts on the system operations are easier. The effectiveness of the proposed analysis method is verified by simulation and experimental results.

  • Seated human subjects have been exposed to vertical vibration so as to investigate six-axis biodynamic response. Sixteen males were exposed to random vertical vibration in the frequency range(3~40Hz) at one vibration magnitude(0.224m/$s^2$ r.m.s.). Forces were measured in the vertical, fore-and-aft, lateral, roll, pitch and yaw direction on the seat. The median of cross-axis apparent mass magnitude in the fore-and-aft direction could reach up to 20% of the apparent mass magnitude at resonance frequency. And the median of apparent eccentric mass magnitude in the roll direction could reach up to 15% of the apparent eccentric mass magnitude in the pitch direction at resonance frequency. But cross-axis apparent mass in the lateral direction and apparent eccentric mass in the yaw direction showed very small.

  • Damping of multi-span tube with loose supports according to the finite support clearances is investigated through the experimental modal analysis. Loose intermediate support leads to strong nonlinearity in tube dynamics, provides statistical nature, and increases tube damping through impacting and friction at the supports. Fraction of critical damping was estimated by the modal curve fitting to parameter estimation from the measured frequency response functions. Magnitude of random excitation force, which can reproduce the in-situ excitation in operating environment, was maintained as constant value with a fine tolerance during vibration testing. Range of input force was carefully selected to cover from the low magnitude excitation for linearly behaved tube motion to high magnitude of force for nonlinearly-behaved tube motion. Estimated critical damping ratio shows scatters in data and tends to increase as the magnitude of rising force and decrease with upward frequency variation. Larger size of support gap increases multi-span tube damping for high magnitude of excitation.

  • This paper describes the methods for the detection of shorted-turn in the rotor of a cylindrical synchronous generator. A search coil is installed in the air-gap to detect the shorted-turn. The occurrence of a fault in the rotor winding results in a decrease of the induced voltages in the stator. And the magnitude of the rotor flux can be estimated by using the search coil and the estimated stator voltages respectively. And the magnitude of the estimated rotor flux is used for discriminating the rotor windings short or not by detecting the magnitude of the rotor flux. The method using a search coil located in the air-gap can detect not only the occurrence of a turn fault but also its position in the rotor winding. But the method using the estimated stator voltages gives the magnitude of the rotor flux, and only the number of a short-turn.
