Simple Harmonic Oscillation of Ferromagnetic Vortex Core

  • Here we report a theoretical description of ferromagnetic vortex dynamics. Based on Thiele's formulation of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, the motion of the vortex core could be described by a function of the vortex core position. Under a parabolic potential generated in the circular magnetic patterns, the vortex core showed a circular rotation-namely the gyrotropic motion, which could be described by a 2-dimensional simple harmonic oscillator. The gyrotropic frequency and apparent damping constant were predicted and compared with the values obtained micromagnetic calculation.

Valence State of the Sm Metal

  • Valence state of the Sm metal is investigated using the total energy linearized muffin-tin orbital (LMTO) band method for the observed Sm-type crystal structure. We have considered both the relativistic and the semi-relativistic description of 4f-core electrons. We have found that, in the paramagnetic phase of bulk Sm, the trivalent valence state is more stable at the observed lattice constant than the divalent valence state.

  • A newly designed magnetic annealing apparatus was used for the treatment of Fe-3%Si steels. With the help of this device, the effect of magnetic annealing on magnetostriction was studied in a wide spectrum of external elastic stresses. It was shown that magnetostriction properties of Fe-Si steels were improved in the compressed state through magnetic annealing, while those in the unstressed state or under tensiion were found to be practically unchanged.

Magnetoresistance and Strain in Permalloy Films

  • We measure the magnetoresistance (MR) of sputtered Permalloy ($Ni_{83}Fe_{17}$) films with external strains produced by piezoelectric tranducer actuators. We observe that the MR raito was increased by 2.3 times by a compressive strain of $3.5{\times}10^{-4}$ compared to that of the as-deposited film. Tensile strains and compressive strains reduced the MR ratio. These observations suggest that it is possible to tune the MR properties through the use of the external strains. We expect to apply the results for the multi-head magnetic recorders with selectively activated recording heads.

Susceptometry Application of Portable HTS SQUID-Based System

  • A portable RF HTS SQUID-based susceptometer was used for small size magnetized sample testing in weak DC (up to 200A/m) and AC (up to 4 A/m) magnetic fields. The system resolution for the magnetic moment is of the order of $1.6{\times}10^{-10} A.m^2$. The measured DC susceptibility of a tested sample agrees well with the value obtained by using a commercial liquid helium susceptometer.

Temperature Dependence of Magnetic State of Fe/Al Multilayered Films

  • We investigated the temperature dependence of magnetization of Fe/Al multilayers fabricated by dc magnetron sputtering system. As the temperature increased from 5 K in a low magnetic field (100G) the magnetization of the samples increased and made a broad peak at some critical temperature. Further increase of temperature decresed the magnetization as an ardinary ferromagnetic curve. Part of samples show rapid increase of magnetization at low temperature. A model developed in this study suggests that the biquadratic coupling yields such a rapidly increasing behavior of magnetization at low temperature.

  • Vector Moving Preisach model has been applied to the unoriented Co-based alloy thin film media. In the model, the out-of plane easy axis distribution of the particles was derived directly from the texture coefficient phkl obtained from XRD analysis, which corresponds to the fraction of the grains that have the {hkl} plane lying parallel to in-plane direction. The model was validated, by its prediction of a variety of responses, including major loop, minor loop, and the angular dependence of coercivities.

  • 흔히 EAS SYSTEM으로 불리는 Electronic Article Surveilance System(전자 상품 가시 시스템)은 일반적으로 '상품 도난 방지 시스템' 이라고 한다. 상품 도난 방지 시스템을 설치하는 목적은 편의점, 슈퍼마켓, 의류점, 서점, 오디오/비디오 테이프 판매점 및 대여점, 스포츠용품점, 하이마트, 도서관 등의 일정한 보호구역으로부터 의류, 서적, 오디오/비디오 테이프, CD등의 상품을 도난으로부터 방지하는 것이다. 상품 도난방지 시스템은 판매되는 상품 표면에 특정 주파수의 전파에 반응하도록 설계된 라벨이나 태그(Tag)를 부착하고, 입구에 특정 주파수의 전파를 방사하는 안테나(Frame)를 설치하여 라벨이나 태그가 계산대에서 제거되거나 센서 기능이 소멸되지 않은 채 유출될 때, 상품을 검출하여 경보를 발생시켜 상품의 도난을 방지한다.

The Effect of Ni Atoms Inserted in Ag Spacer on the Magnetic Property of Ni/Ag(Ni at %)/Ni Trilayered Films

  • We have measured the magnetization of Ni/Ag(Ni at %)/Ni (50$\AA$/30 $\AA$/50 $\AA$) trilayered films including Ni atoms inserted in non-magnetic Ag spacer. The magnetization as a function of applied field at 5 K and as a function of temperature at 100 Oe were investigated respectively using SQUID magnetometer. In these measurements peaks of magnetization at some critical temperatures were observed in all the samples. The antiferromagnetic coupling energy between neighboring Ni layers showed oscillatory behaviors according to the amounts of the Ni atoms inserted in Ag spacer. Loose spin model suggested by slonczews야 was used to explain such results.

Correlation between Coil Configurations and Discharge Characteristics of a Magnetized Inductively Coupled Plasma

  • Correlation between coil configurations and the discharge characteristics such as plasma density and the electron temperature in a newly designed magnetized inductively coupled plasma (M-ICP) etcher were investigated. Radial and axial magnetic flux density distributions as well as the magnetic flux density on the center of the substrate holder were controllable by placing multiple circular coils around the etcher. The plasma density increased up to 60.7% by arranging coils (or optimizing magnetic flux density distributions inside the etcher) properly although the magnetic flux density on the center of the substrate holder was fixed at 7 Gauss.
