  • AC losses in multifilamentary HTS tapes can be classified to hysteresis loss, coupling loss, and eddy current loss from the viewpoint of their generation mechanism. From the viewpoint of the major magnetic field component generating them, they can be classified to magnetization loss, transport loss, and total loss. Dividing superconductor to fine filaments, twisting filaments bundle and increasing transverse resistivity are effectively reduce magnetization loss and total loss when the external magnetic field is relatively large. Recently, twisted multifilamentary Bi 2223 tapes with pure silver matrix were fabricated and the reduction of magnetization loss was proved experimentally in the parallel magnetic field to the tape wide face. However, when the perpendicular magnetic field is applied, increasing transverse resistivity is required essentially to reduce the AC losses. The transverse resistivity was increased successfully by the introduction of resistive barrier between filaments.

  • There are few reports of high frequency loss behavior in the near-field for magnetic films with semiconducting properties, even though semiconducting magnetic materials, such as soft magnetic amorphous alloys and nanocrystalline thin films, have been demonstrated. The electromagnetic loss behavior of multilayer magnetic films with semiconducting properties on the microstrip line in quasi-microwave frequency band was analyzed numerically using a commercial finite-element based electromagnetic solver. The large increase in the absorption performance and broadband characteristics of the semiconducting/insulating layer magnetic films examined in this study were attributed to an increase in the loss factor of resistive loss. The electromagnetic reflection increased significantly with increasing conductivity, and the loss power deteriorated significantly. The numerical results of the magnetic field distribution showed that a strong radiated signal on the microstrip line was emitted with increasing conductivity and decreasing film thickness due to re-reflection of the radiated wave from the surface of the magnetic film, even though the emitted levels varied with film thickness.

  • The microstructure and the magnetic properties of Mn-Zn ferrite, which were power loss and saturation magnetic flux density, were investigated as the function of the process before firing. The highest initial permeability and the lowest power loss were attained to the specimen with CaO 400 ppm as a resulted from the highest solubility to SiO$_2$and the creation of liquid phase which improved sintering. The biggest grain size, the highest saturation magnetic flux density and the lowest power loss, which was resulted from that the eddy current loss increased as grain size increased but the hysteresis loss much more decreased and the hysteresis loss strongly influenced on the total power loss rather than the eddy current loss, were obtained to the Mn-Zn ferrite added 2wt% PVA. The power loss was lowest and the saturation magnetic flux density was highest in case of 1 ton/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and the grain size was not influenced.

  • In this paper, the nature of iron loss in electrical steel during alternating field excitation is investigated more precisely. The exact definition of AC iron loss is cleared by accurately measuring the iron loss for conditions of both the sinusoidal magnetic field and sinusoidal magnetic flux density. The results of this approach to iron loss calculations in electrical steel are compared to experimentally-measured losses. In addition, an inverse hysteresis model considering eddy current loss was developed to analyze the iron loss when the input is the voltage source. With this model, the inrush current in the inductor or transformer as well as the iron loss can be calculated.

  • AMR (Active Magnetic Regenerative) refrigerators require the large variation of the magnetic field and a HTS magnet can be used. The amount of AC loss is very important considering the overall efficiency of the AMR refrigerator. However, it is very hard to estimate the precise loss of the HTS magnet because the magnetic field distribution around the conductor itself depends on the coil configuration and the neighboring HTS wires interact each other through the distorted magnetic field by the screening current Therefore, the AC loss of HTS magnet should be calculated using the whole configuration of the HTS magnet with superconducting characteristic. This paper describes the AC loss of the HTS magnet by an appropriate FEM approach, which uses the non-linear characteristic of HTS conductor. The analysis model is based on the 2-D FEM model, called as 'magnetic field formulation and edge-element model', for whole coil configuration in cylindrical coordinates. The effects of transport current and stacked conductors on the AC loss are investigated considering the field-dependent critical current. The PDE model of 'Comsol multiphysics' is used for the FEM analysis with properly implemented equations for axisymmetric model.

  • Magnetization loss of high temperature superconductoring BSCCO tape and YBCO coated conductor(YBCOCC) is most important issue in the development of superconducting power devices. In this paper, the measured results of magnetization losses under various angles of external magnetic field in BSCCO tape stacked conductors and YBCO CC stacked conductors are presented and compared with each other. Also, we present the compared results of magnetization losses measured at arbitrary reaction magnetic fields and analyzed with perpendicular magnetic field components of those. The results show that magnetization losses of YBCO CC single and stacked conductors agree well with the analyzed value by it's perpendicular magnetic field component, but BSCCO single and stacked conductors are not.

  • AC loss which is generated in an HTS wire varies with the direction of the external magnetic field. This paper calculates the AC loss in an HTS tape, where effects of the perpendicular direction of the magnetic field are considered. Brandt equation is used to calculate the loss by perpendicular magnetic field. In the calculation, current densities are varied along the variation of the magnitude of the external magnetic field. Results of calculation are compared with those of the conventional method.

One purpose of the paper is to present insertion loss on this resonator for magnetic loss, dielectric loss, magnetic field and saturation magnetization. Another is to study the effect of propeller resonator on response characteristics. The paper includes the description of one commercial circulator that is compatible with the data obtained

  • A Bi-2223 tape has beer developed for power applications such as a fault current limiter, a power cable and a superconducting magnetic energy storage system. In such applications, the Bi-2223 tape carries time varying transport current and in addition experiences time varying external magnetic field. It is well known that the external magnetic field not only causes magnetization loss in the Bi-2223 tape, but also drastically increases transport loss due to a so-called "dynamic resistance". We developed an evaluation setup, which can measure transport loss in external at magnetic fields. Using this equipment, we measured the dynamic resistances for various amplitudes and frequencies of an external ac magnetic field perpendicular to the face in the tape. Simultaneously we investigated the effect of an external ac field on transport loss with different experimental conditions. This paper describes test results and discussions on correlation between the dynamic resistance and the transport loss for the Bi-2223 tape.

  • Coupling loss is generated by the time-varying external magnetic field in the normal matrix of the multi-filamentary HTS tape. This paper calculates the coupling loss in the HTS tape. Analytic calculation of the coupling loss cannot consider the effect of the different shapes and the arrangement of the filaments. Numerical calculation by using finite element method and analytic calculation of the coupling loss have been done in this paper and results of two calculations have been compared. Transverse magnetic field and longitudinal magnetic field were considered as the external field.
