New Tridentate Ligands with Mixed Donor Atoms for Cu-Based Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

  • 2-Furancarboxaldehyde-2-pyridinylhydrazone (FPH) and 5-methyl-2-furancarboxaldehyde-2-pyridinylhydrazone (MFPH) were synthesized and used as tridentate ligands of copper (I) bromide for the atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene. The polymerization of methyl methacrylate achieved high conversion and yielded polymers with a good control of molecular weight and low polydispersity (PDI=1.33). Higher PDI were observed in the polymerization of styrene. Using 1-phenyl ethylbromide (PEBr) and ethyl 2-bromoisobutyrate (EBiB) as model compounds for the polymeric chain ends, the activation rate constants of the new catalytic systems were measured. These results were correlated with the polymerization results and compared with another catalytic system previously reported.

  • Recently in order to describe the complex rheological behavior of polymer melts with long side branches like low density polyethylene, new constitutive equations called the pom-pom equations have been derived by McLeish and Larson on the basis of the reptation dynamics with simplified branch structure taken into account. In this study mathematical stability analysis under short and high frequency wave disturbances has been performed for the simplified differential version of these constitutive equations. It is proved that they are globally Hadamard stable except for the case of maximum constant backbone stretch (λ = q) with arm withdrawal s$\_$c/ neglected, as long as the orientation tensor remains positive definite or the smooth strain history in the now is previously given. However this model is dissipative unstable, since the steady shear How curves exhibit non-monotonic dependence on shear rate. This type of instability corresponds to the nonlinear instability in simple shear flow under finite amplitude disturbances. Additionally in the flow regime of creep shear flow where the applied constant shear stress exceeds the maximum achievable value in the steady now curves, the constitutive equations will possibly violate the positive definiteness of the orientation tensor and thus become Hadamard unstable.

The Central Concept for Chitin Catabolic Cascade in Marine Bacterium, Vibrios

  • The enzymatic hydrolysis of chitin has been studied for almost a century, and early work established that at least two enzymes are required, a chitinase that mainly yields the disaccharide N,N'-diacetylchitobiose, or $(GlcNAc)_2$, and a "chitobiase", or ${\beta}$-N-acetylglucosaminidase, which gives the final product G1cNAc. This pathway has not been completely identified but has remained the central concept for the chitin catabolism through the $20^{th}$ century1 including in marine bacteria. However, the chitin catabolic cascade is quite complex, as described in this review. This report describes three biologically functional genes involved in the chitin catabolic cascade of Vibrios in an attempt to better understand the metabolic pathway of chitin.

Polymerizations of Propylene with Unsymmetrical ($\alpha$-Diimine)nickel(II) Catalysts

  • New unsymmetrical ($\alpha$-Diimine)nickel(II) catalysts having different pendent groups at the ortho positions on aromatic rings were synthesized and subjected to propylene polymerizations with MAO (methylaluminoxane). Structural analyses of the resulting polypropylenes by $^1H\;and\;^{13}C\;NMR$ showed that the ortho substituents on aromatic rings of ($\alpha$-diimine)nickel(II) catalyst affected significantly the polypropylene microstructure. While $C_s$ symmetric catalyst afforded a syndiotactic polypropylene (rr triad content=66%) due to the syndiospecific chain end control, $C_1$ symmetric catalysts produced much less stereoregular polypropylenes (rr triads content <50%), presumably because of collision of the isospecific site control with the syndiospecific chain end control.

Nanofiller as Vulcanizing Aid for Styrene-Butadiene Elastomer

  • The use of ZnO and stearic acid is very well known in sulfenamide accelerated sulfur vulcanization of diene elastomers. Zn-ion coated nano filler has been developed and tested, in styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) as sulfur vulcanizing activator cum reinforcing filler. In this study Zinc oxide has been replaced by the Zn-ion coated nano silica filler with an aim to study the dual role of this nanofiller in SBR. The presence of Zn-ion on the nano silica filler surface activates the sulfur vulcanization by involving Zn++ in to the sulfurating complex formed with thiazole from sulfenamide. The increase of Zn-ion, on the nanofiller, decrease the scorch safety of the elastomer compound but increase the tensile strength, state of cure and tear strength and attain maximum at its 10% level. The presence of stearic acid increases the rate of vulcanization. Replacement of stearic acid with mono-stearate, however, increases the vulcanization rate but decrease the ultimate state of cure. A mechanistic scheme involving dual function of this nanofiller has been suggested.

  • Lipopretein(a)[Lp(a)] is a macromolecular complex found in human plasma that combines structural elements composed of LDL and apo(a), and that is associated with premature coronary heart disease and stroke. In this study, various samples which consisted of normal and abnormal LDL and LP(a) were selected for compar-ison. The above samples were incubated with copper in order to oxidize and to compare atheroma formation, in vitro and free radical formation of Lp(a) was decreased compared to purified LDl. And LDL or Lp(a) from a 40 year old donor was higher in the free radical formation than that fro, a 20 years old donor. In order to investigate the macrophage foam cell formation, oxidized LDL of Lp(a) was incubated with human monocyte derived macrophage(HMDM). Oxidized samples enhanced on acceptability f foam cell formation by HMDM were compared to the control group. Also, structural change of LDL and Lp(a) against oxidation times were found from HPLC mapping.

Preparation of a Hydrophobized Chitosan Oligosaccharide for Application as an Efficient Gene Carrier

  • To prepare chitosan-based polymeric amphiphiles that can form nanosized core-shell structures (nanopar­ticles) in aqueous milieu, chitosan oligosaccharides (COSs) were modified chemically with hydrophobic cholesterol groups. The physicochemical properties of the hydrophobized COSs (COSCs) were investigated by using dynamic light scattering and fluorescence spectroscopy. The feasibility of applying the COSCs to biomedical applications was investigated by introducing them into a gene delivery system. The COSCs formed nanosized self-aggregates in aqueous environments. Furthermore, the physicochemical properties of the COSC nanoparticles were closely related to the molecular weights of the COSs and the number of hydrophobic groups per COS chain. The critical aggregation concentration values decreased upon increasing the hydrophobicity of the COSCs. The COSCs effi­ciently condensed plasmid DNA into nanosized ion-complexes, in contrast to the effect of the unmodified COSs. An investigation of gene condensation, performed using a gel retardation assay, revealed that $COS6(M_n=6,040 Da)$ containing $5\%$ of cholesteryl chloroformate (COS6C5) formed a stable DNA complex at a COS6C5/DNA weight ratio of 2. In contrast, COS6, the unmodified COS, failed to form a stable COS/DNA complex even at an elevated weight ratio of 8. Furthermore, the COS6C5/DNA complex enhanced the in vitro transfection efficiency on Human embryonic kidney 293 cells by over 100 and 3 times those of COS6 and poly(L-lysine), respectively. Therefore, hydrophobized chitosan oligosaccharide can be considered as an efficient gene carrier for gene delivery systems.

  • 마크로아밀라아제혈증은 대개 혈중 아밀라아제 분자의 크기가 큰 양성 질환으로 1-2% 까지 보고된다. 마크로아밀라아제혈증에서는 아밀라아제가 면역 글로불린과 결합하여 고분자 복합체를 형성하여 소변을 통한 배출이 정상 혹은 저하되어 혈청 내 고아밀라아제혈증을 일으킨다. 소아에서는 매우 드문 질환이다. 본 저자들은 초기 급성 췌장염으로 오인된 4세 여아가 마크로아밀라아제혈증으로 진단되어 보고하는 바이다. 고아밀라아제혈증의 원인중 하나인 마크로아밀라아제혈증을 조기 진단하지 못하면 췌장질환과 감별을 위한 고 비용의 검사를 하게 되고 금식이나 정맥 영양과 같은 필요 없는 치료를 할 수 있다.

Highly Fluorescing Solid DNA-Cationic Polyelectrolyte Complexes Prepared from a Natural DNA and a Poly(fluorenevinylene-alt-phenylene) Bearing Quaternary Ammonium Pendants

  • A fluorescing, copolymer(Q)-bearing, quaternary ammonium pendant was mixed with excess natural salmon sperm DNA with a molecular weight of $1.3{\times}10^6$(2,000 base pairs) to afford highly fluorescing, complex mixtures. The fluorescence life-time of the polymer Q was greatly increased when mixed with DNA: for the mixture of Q:DNA=1:750 the fast and slow decay lifetimes increased from ca. 10 to 100 ps and from 20 ps to ca. 1 ns, respectively. The enhanced fluorescence of the mixtures was ascribed to efficient compartmentalization and reduced conformational relaxation of the polymer Q by complexation with excess DNA.

Preparation of Water Soluble Chitosan Blendmers and Their Application to Removal of Heavy Metal ions from Wastewater

  • High purity water soluble chitosans (WsCs) were employed as a flocculant to remove heavy metal ions from wastewater of industrial plating wastewater treatment complex. Their weight average molecular weights and polydispersities were 272,000~620,000 g/mol and 1.4~1.9 range, respectively and were readily soluble in water in the pH range of 3~11. Heavy metal ions such as chromium, iron and copper were removed well by WsCs. When WsCs was blended with either sodium N, N-diethyldithiocarbamate trihydrate (SDDC$_{T}$) or sodium salicylate (SSc), the removal efficiency was further increased primarily due to the excess amount of hydrophilic sulfonic and carboxylic groups. Especially, in the case of WsCs-SSc the remaining chromium and copper concentrations were 0.1 mg/L and 9.5 mg/L, which are 1/15 and 1/3 compared with that of pure WsCs, respectively. The former is within the acceptable limit, but the latter is not. Therefore, the effective copper flocculant remains to be studied.d.
