  • Function approximation from a set of input-output pairs has numerous applications in scientific and engineering areas. Support vector machine (SVM) is a new and very promising classification, regression and function approximation technique developed by Vapnik and his group at AT&TG Bell Laboratories. However, it has failed to establish itself as common machine learning tool. This is partly due to the fact that this is not easy to implement, and its standard implementation requires the use of optimization package for quadratic programming (QP). In this appear we present simple iterative Kernel Adatron (KA) algorithm for function approximation and compare it with standard SVM algorithm using QP.

  • There has been substantial research into the bankruptcy prediction. Many researchers used the statistical method in the problem until the early 1980s. Since the late 1980s, Artificial Intelligence(AI) has been employed in bankruptcy prediction. And many studies have shown that artificial neural network(ANN) achieved better performance than traditional statistical methods. However, despite ANN's superior performance, it has some problems such as overfitting and poor explanatory power. To overcome these limitations, this paper suggests a relatively new machine learning technique, support vector machine(SVM), to bankruptcy prediction. SVM is simple enough to be analyzed mathematically, and leads to high performances in practical applications. The objective of this paper is to examine the feasibility of SVM in bankruptcy prediction by comparing it with ANN, logistic regression, and multivariate discriminant analysis. The experimental results show that SVM provides a promising alternative to bankruptcy prediction.

  • In high-dimensional data analysis, sufficient dimension reduction (SDR) has been considered as an attractive tool for reducing the dimensionality of predictors while preserving regression information. The principal support vector machine (PSVM) (Li et al., 2011) offers a unified approach for both linear and nonlinear SDR. This article comprehensively explores a variety of SDR methods based on the PSVM, which we call principal machines (PM) for SDR. The PM achieves SDR by solving a sequence of convex optimizations akin to popular supervised learning methods, such as the support vector machine, logistic regression, and quantile regression, to name a few. This makes the PM straightforward to handle and extend in both theoretical and computational aspects, as we will see throughout this article.

  • Since the face in image content corresponds to individual information that can distinguish a specific person from other people, it is important to accurately detect faces not hidden in an image. In this paper, we propose a method to accurately detect a face from input images using a deep learning algorithm, which is one of the machine learning methods. In the proposed method, image input via the red-green-blue (RGB) color model is first changed to the luminance-chroma: blue-chroma: red-chroma ($YC_bC_r$) color model; then, other regions are removed using the learned skin color model, and only the skin regions are segmented. A CNN model-based deep learning algorithm is then applied to robustly detect only the face region from the input image. Experimental results show that the proposed method more efficiently segments facial regions from input images. The proposed face area-detection method is expected to be useful in practical applications related to multimedia and shape recognition.

  • Over the past 30 years, significant developments have been made in hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technologies that can provide end users with rich spectral, spatial, and temporal information. Owing to the advances in miniaturization, cost reduction, real-time processing, and analytical methods, HSI technologies have a wide range of applications from remote-sensing to healthcare, military, and the environment. In this study, we focus on the latest trends of HSI technologies, analytical methods, and their applications. In particular, improved machine learning techniques, such as deep learning, allows the full use of HSI technologies in classification, clustering, and spectral mixture algorithms. Finally, we describe the status of HSI technology development for skin diagnostics.

  • The Location-Based Service (LBS) is one of the most well-known services on the Internet. Positioning is the primary association with LBS services. This study proposes an intelligent LoRa-based positioning system, called AI@LBS, to provide accurate location data. The fingerprint mechanism with the clustering algorithm in unsupervised learning filters out signal noise and improves computing stability and accuracy. In this study, data noise is filtered using the DBSCAN (Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise) algorithm, increasing the positioning accuracy from 95.37% to 97.38%. The problem of data imbalance is addressed using the SMOTE (Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique) technique, increasing the positioning accuracy from 97.38% to 99.17%. A field test in the NTUST campus (www.ntust.edu.tw) revealed that AI@LBS system can reduce average distance error to 0.48m.

  • Semi-supervised learning has gained significant attention in recent applications. In this article, we provide a selective overview of popular semi-supervised methods and then propose a simple but effective algorithm for semi-supervised classification using support vector machines (SVM), one of the most popular binary classifiers in a machine learning community. The idea is simple as follows. First, we apply the dimension reduction to the unlabeled observations and cluster them to assign labels on the reduced space. SVM is then employed to the combined set of labeled and unlabeled observations to construct a classification rule. The use of SVM enables us to extend it to the nonlinear counterpart via kernel trick. Our numerical experiments under various scenarios demonstrate that the proposed method is promising in semi-supervised classification.

  • Recent rapid advances in computer hardware performance have led to relatively low computational costs, increasing the number of applications of machine-learning techniques to geophysical problems. In particular, deep-learning techniques are gaining in popularity as the number of cases successfully solving complex and nonlinear problems has gradually increased. In this paper, applications of seismic data denoising methods using deep-learning techniques are introduced and investigated. Depending on the type of attenuated noise, these studies are grouped into denoising applications of coherent noise, random noise, and the combination of these two types of noise. Then, we investigate the deep-learning techniques used to remove the corresponding noise. Unlike conventional methods used to attenuate seismic noise, deep neural networks, a typical deep-learning technique, learn the characteristics of the noise independently and then automatically optimize the parameters. Therefore, such methods are less sensitive to generalized problems than conventional methods and can reduce labor costs. Several studies have also demonstrated that deep-learning techniques perform well in terms of computational cost and denoising performance. Based on the results of the applications covered in this paper, the pros and cons of the deep-learning techniques used to remove seismic noise are analyzed and discussed.

  • This paper describes the hybrid document summarization using the indicative summarization and the query-based summarization. The learning models are built from teaming documents in order to extract topic phrases. We use Naive Bayesian, Decision Tree and Supported Vector Machine as the machine learning algorithm. The system extracts topic phrases automatically from new document based on these models and outputs the summary of the document using query-based summarization which considers the extracted topic phrases as queries and calculates the locality-based similarity of each topic phrase. We examine how the topic phrases affect the summarization and how many phrases are proper to summarization. Then, we evaluate the extracted summary by comparing with manual summary, and we also compare our summarization system with summarization mettled from MS-Word.

  • Data augmentation is an efficient way to reduce overfitting on models and to improve a performance supplementing extra data for training. It is more important in deep learning based industrial machine vision. Because deep learning requires huge scale of learning data to learn a model, but acquisition of data can be limited in most of industrial applications. A very generic method for augmenting image data is to perform geometric transformations, such as cropping, rotating, translating and adjusting brightness of the image. The effectiveness of data augmentation in image classification has been reported, but it is rare in defect inspections. We explore and compare various basic augmenting operations for the metal surface defects. The experiments were executed for various types of defects and different CNN networks and analysed for performance improvements by the data augmentations.
