  • Attitude control law synthesis for the three-axis attitude maneuver of a flexible spacecraft model is presented in this study. The basic idea is motivated by previous works for the extension into a more general case. The new case includes gravitational gradient torque which has significant effect on a wide range of low earth orbit missions. As the first step, the fully nonlinear dynamic equations of motion are derived including gravitational gradient. The control law design based upon the Lyapunov approach is attempted. The Lyapunov function consists of a weighted combination of system kinetic and potential energy. Then, a set of stabilizing control law is derived from the basic Lyapunov stability theory. The new control law is therefore in a general form partially validating the previous work in some sense.

  • This paper proposes a switching control method applicable to any affine, 2nd order nonlinear system with single input. The key contribution is to develop a control design method which uses a piecewise continuous Lyapunov function non-increasing at every discontinuous point. The proposed design method requires no restrictions except full state availability. To obtain a non-increasing, piecewise continuous Lyapunov function, we change the sign of off-diagonal term s of the positive definite matrix composing the former Lyapunov function according to the sign of the Inter-connection term. And we use the solution of inequalities which guarantee each Lyapunov function is non-increasing at any discontinuous point.

  • In this paper, we propose the concept of orthonormalized compressed measurement for the stability analysis of discrete linear time-varying Kalman filters. Unlike previous studies that deal with the homogeneous portion of Kalman filters, the proposed Lyapunov method directly deals with the stochastically-driven system. The orthonorrmalized compressed measurement provides information on the a priori state estimate of the Kalman filter at the k-th step that is propagated from the a posteriori state estimate at the previous block of time. Since the complex multiple-step propagations of a candidate Lyapunov function with process and measurement noises can be simplified to a one-step Lyapunov propagation by the orthonormalized compressed measurement, a stochastic radius of attraction can be derived that would be impractically difficult to obtain by the conventional multiple-step Lyapunov method.

  • The Lyapunov exponent and moment Lyapunov exponents of Hill's equation with frequency and damping coefficient fluctuated by correlated wideband random processes are studied in this paper. The method of stochastic averaging, both the first-order and the second-order, is applied. The averaged $It\hat{o}$ differential equation governing the pth norm is established and the pth moment Lyapunov exponents and Lyapunov exponent are then obtained. This method is applied to the study of the almost-sure and the moment stability of the stationary solution of the thin simply supported beam subjected to time-varying axial compressions and damping which are small intensity correlated stochastic excitations. The validity of the approximate results is checked by the numerical Monte Carlo simulation method for this stochastic system.

  • In Strapdown Inertial Navigation System(SDINS), error models based on previously proposed conversion equations between the attitude errors, are only valid in case the attitude errors are small. The SDINS error models have been independently studied according to the definition of the reference frame and of the attitude error. The conversion equations between the attitude errors applicable to SDINS with large attitude errors are newly derived. Lyapunov transformation matrices are also derived from the obtained results. Furthermore the general method, which is independent of the attitude error and the reference frame to derive SDINS error model, is proposed using the Lyapunov transformation.

  • This paper proposes a model predictive control based on the discrete Lyapunov function to improve the performance of power electronic converters. The proposed control technique, based on the finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC), defines a cost function for the control law which is determined under the Lyapunov stability theorem with a control error compensation. The steady state and dynamic performance of the proposed control strategy has been tested under a single phase AC/DC voltage source rectifier (S-VSR). Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed control strategy not only offers global stability and good robustness but also leads to a high quality sinusoidal current with a reasonably low total harmonic distortion (THD) and a fast dynamic response under linear loads.

  • The purpose of this paper is the application of the techniques for the new estimation of robustness for the aircraft systems having structured uncertainties. The basic ideas to analyze the system which is the originally nonlinear is Lyapunov direct theorems. The nonlinear systems have various forms of terms inside the system equations and this investigation is confined in the form of bounded uncertainties. The number of uncertainties will be the degree of freedoms in the calculation of the robust stability regions called the robustness bounds. This proposition adopts the theoretical analysis of the Lyapunov direct methods, that is, the sign properties of the Lyapunov function derivative integrated along finite intervals of time, in place of the original method of the sign properties of the time derivative of the Lyapunov function itself. This is the new sufficient criteria to relax the stability condition and is used to generate techniques for the robust design of control systems with structured perturbations. Using this relaxing stability conditions, in this paper, the quadratic form of Lyapunov function is utilized. In this paper, the practical system of vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft is analyzed with the proposed stability criteria based upon the Lyapunov direct method. The application of numerical procedures can prove the improvements in estimations of robustness with structured uncertainties. The applicable aircraft system is assumed to be linear with time-varying with nonlinear bounded perturbations.

  • This paper gives derivations of voltage collapse conditions by using the Lyapunov function, which yields the exactly same results with the sensitivity analysis approach. On the other hand, the voltage collapse phenomenon is interpreted in the physical sense, and causes of the static voltage unstability and the dynamic voltage unstability are analyzed with the use of proposed Lyapunov function. In addition a new method is developed to calculate the power capacity limit of transmission lines with respect to voltage stability. This paper shows that it is able to analyze the voltage collapse with the Lyapunov direct method in the simple 2-bus system and proposes that the method works well by observing the variation of Lyapunov function as the load is increased in the system.

  • This paper is concerned with an experimental research to random vibration control caused by external loads specially in bridges which tend to be structurally flexible. Experimenting on a reduced structure modelled on Seohae Grand Bridge, we inflicted a reduced form of El-centro wave on the model structure to a proper proportion. On the center of its middle span, we placed a shear type MR damper which was to control its vibration and also acquire its structural responses such as displacement and acceleration at the same site. The experiments concerning controlling vibration were performed according to a variety of theories including un-control, passive on/off control, and Lyapunov stability theory. Its control performance was evaluated in terms of the peak absolute displacements, the peak absolute accelerations and the total power required to control the bridge which differ from each different experiment method. Among all the methods applied in this paper, case of Lyapunov control method turned out to be the most effective to reduces of displacement and acceleration. Also, this method could to decrease consuming of external power for vibration control. Finally, it was noteworthy that Lyapunov control method was specially effective in the vibration control employing a semi-active damper such MR damper.

  • This study proposes the analysis and evaluation of method of time series of ultrasonic signal using the chaotic feature extraction for ultrasonic pattern recognition. The features are extracted from time series data for analysis of weld defects quantitatively. For this purpose, analysis objectives in this study are fractal dimension, Lyapunov exponent, and strange attractor on hyperspace. The Lyapunov exponent is a measure of rate in which phase space diverges nearby trajectories. Chaotic trajectories have at least one positive Lyapunov exponent, and the fractal dimension appears as a metric space such as the phase space trajectory of a dynamical system. In experiment, fractal(correlation) dimensions and Lyapunov exponents show the mean value of 4.663, and 0.093 relatively in case of learning, while the mean value of 4.926, and 0.090 in case of testing in slag inclusion(weld defects) are shown. Therefore, the proposed chaotic feature extraction can be enhancement of precision rate for ultrasonic pattern recognition in defecting signals of weld zone, such as slag inclusion.
