  • To study how illuminance affects cognitive ability of the elderly, the elderly's EEG, concentration, HRV and vibra image were measured in a test room with temperature $25[^{\circ}C]$, relative humidity 50[RH%] and air flow speed 0.02[m/sec] by varying illuminance to 100[lux], 300[lux], 600[lux], 1000[lux] and 1500[lux]. Ten active elderly males were selected as subjects. Experiment condition was fixed as 1met of activity amount where the subject is seated and relaxed with cloth amount of 0.7clo. As a result, 1000[lux] was found out to be the most pleasant illuminance for the elderly, because $M{\beta}$ increased by 66.35%, and $S{\alpha}$ increased by 31.57% when the elderly was under 1000[lux] of illuminance. Also, concentration under 1000[lux] increased by 8.83% compared to 100[lux], and the pattern of concentration maintained uniformly. SDNN increased by 74.94% under 1000[lux] compared to 100[lux]. Nervousness decreased by 97.23% under 1000[lux] compared to 100[lux]. Moreover, HRT notably increased and aggression remarkably decreased under illuminance of 1000[lux]. Thus, based on the fact that comfort, concentration and heart stability of the elderly reach the highest under 1000[lux], it is determined that the illuminance has to be considered foremost in designing the elderly's welfare facilities to raise their safety and level of independence.

  • This research investigated appropriate indoor light sources and light intensities for Hedera rhombea and Saxifraga stolonifera, which are shade-tolerant and cold-resistant indoor plants. Plants were grown in wood flames of 1 m in width${\times}$1 m in length${\times}$1 m in height. Light sources were fluorescent lamp, three wave fluorescent lamp and halogen lamp that are being used in most of the subway stations in Korea, and light intensities were 200 Lux, 700 Lux and 1,000 Lux. Results are as following. 1. Hedera rhombea Hedera rhombea heights did not show differences statistically as responses to light sources and light intensities. It, however, tended to be greater with an order of 1,000 Lux, 700 Lux and 200 Lux and halogen lamp, fluorescent lamp, and three wave fluorescent lamp. Number of branch increased under fluorescent lamp than under halogen lamp or three wave fluorescent lamp, and increased under higher light intensities. Number of leaf was higher with an order of three wave fluorescent lamp 1,000 Lux, fluorescent lamp 1,000 Lux and halogen lamp 1,000 Lux. Leaf shape became wider under low light intensities regardless of light sources. Chlorophyl contents in leaf were not significantly different under three wave fluorescent lamp and halogen lamp. However, the contents increased with an order of 200 Lux, 700 Lux and 1,000 Lux under fluorescent lamp. 2. Saxifraga stolonifera The plants were dead or declined under fluorescent lamp regardless of light intensities. When light intensities went under 200 Lux, Saxifraga stolonifera showed poor growth for all the light sources. Plant height, number of shoot, number of leaf, leaf width and leaf length have increased with an order of halogen lamp 1,000 Lux, three wave fluorescent lamp 1,000 Lux and three wave fluorescent lamp 700 Lux. Chlorophyl content was greater with an order of three wave fluorescent lamp 700 Lux, three wave fluorescent lamp 1,000 Lux and halogen lamp 1,000 Lux.

  • The genes involved in riboflavin synthesis (ribI, II, III, and IV) were found immediately downstream of luxG in the lux operon from Photobacterium species. The single stranded DNA containing the intergenic region of lux genes and rib genes from Photobacterium phosphoreum was fully protected by P. phosphoreum mRNA from the S1 nuclease mapping assay suggesting that a transcriptional terminator was not present in the region. In addition, the levels of riboflavin synthase activity in P. phosphoreum was increased during the development of bacterial bioluminescence in the same fashion as the luciferase and fatty acid reductase activities. Insertion of the Photobacterium leiognathi DNA extending from luxB to ribII, between a strong lux promoter and a reporter gene (chloramphenicol acetyltransferase, CAT) and transferred by conjugation into P. leiognathi, did not affect expression of reporter gene. Moreover the CAT gene was not expressed in an analogous construct missing the lux promoter indicating that a promoter was not present in this region. Based on the data here, it can be concluded that the lux genes and rib genes in Photobacterium species are under common regulation.

  • This study was conducted to develop new indoor plants and to investigate the effects of light intensity on the growth of Trachelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium Nakai and Piper kauzura. Most of T. asiaticum var. intermedium Nakai under 100 lux light intensity were blighted in two months, whereas survival rate was 83.3% after five months under 1,000 lux and 2,500 lux. Plant height, number of leaf, leaf width and leaf length increased as light intensity increased. The plants maintained under 2,500 lux showed the greatest plant height and leaf number. Piper kadzura Ohwi was defoliated and blighted in four months under 100 lux light intensity, whereas survival rate was 100% after five months under 1,000 lux and 2,500 lux. But, 1,000 lux light intensity was more favorable chlorophyll contents, leaf length and leaf width than 2,500 lux light intensity. Slight increase of chlorophyll contents and leaf growth under 1,000 lux indicates that Piper kadzura Ohwi could be utilized highly as a indoor ornamental plant.

  • Field collected larvae inside the pumpkin fruit in Jinan, Chonbuk Province were kept in the laboratory at $24{\pm}2^{\circ}C$, RH $65{\pm}5%$, and 14L:10D until they pupated and eclosed. Adults were fed with dry-milk based diet. Mating behavior was observed when they were 40 days old in a field cage at dusk in July and October, 2008. Wing vibration in male took place under the light intensity of 200 lux-20 lux, however, most commonly under 30 lux. Mounting between male and female was observed under 150 lux-30 lux after the act of wing vibration, also most frequently under 30 lux. Copulation occurred under 150 lux-20 lux. Females approached face to face to males which had been engaged in wing vibration and the copulation was successful for up to 64%. Copulation never occurred when a female positioned in front or at side of the male that was not engaged in wing vibration.

  • To support cross potential array and direct potential array, the array for leakage detection of all kinds of water facilities is proposed and it is named as the D-Lux array. The D-Lux array data are arranged to a coloured matrix and it is called the D-Lux view. Low potential difference of anomalous zone shown in D-Lux view implies the indication of leakage zone. Furthermore, for an intuitive interpretation of D-Lux array, equipotential distribution map is made by using D-Lux and direct potential array data. Equipotential distribution map makes us possible to predict import point, export point and the path of water leakage that we could have not anticipated in D-Lux view and the graphs. The water tank experiment and numerical analysis were carried out as preparatory experiment and the field explorations were conducted at a concrete weir and a fill dam. As a result, effective and specific detection of leakage path was possible for the concrete weir and the fill dam.

  • The light-organ symbiont of pine cone fish, Vibrio fischeri, senses its presence in the host and responds to environmental changes by differentially expressing its symbiosis-related luminescence genes. The V. fischeri luminescence genes are activated by LuxR protein in the presence of an autoinducer. In an effort to elucidate the mechanism of regulation of luxR, a plasmid containing luxR was mutagenized in vitro with hydroxylamine and a luxR mutant plasmid was isolated by its ability to activate luminescence genes cloned in E. coli in the absence of the autoinducer. The specific base change identified by DNA sequencing was only single base transition at +78 from the transcriptional start of luxR. Based on a Western immunoblot analysis, the nucleotide change directed the synthesis of much higher level of LuxR protein without any amino acid substitutions. The results suggest that the region including the +78th base is presumably internal operator required for autorepression of luxR, and the increased cellular level of LuxR results in activation of luminescence genes by autoinducer independent fashion.

  • This study was performed to determine light-adaptability under indoor lighting for Korean wild Daphniphyllum macropodum, and to provide an introduction plan for indoor spaces of landscape architecture. The experimental plants, Daphniphyllum macropodum were purchased from a farmhouse in Jejudo as anannualplant, and it was acclimatized in the glass-green house of the general farm of Gyeongnam National University of Science and Technology for40 days. The experiment was performed from February 15, 2010 to November 15, 2010. First, in the case of the fluorescent lamp, the growth and development condition was poor because the plants withered, or the leaves fell off under the 100lux to 500lux, but the condition under 1,000lux was good In the aspects of the number of leaves, form of the tree, photosynthesis rate in its body, and the value of sight, the best light intensity for the growth condition was under the 1,000lux. Second, in the case of the LED light, the growth and development condition was poor because the plants withered, or the leaves fell off under 100lux to 1,000lux, but the smooth growth and development was done under a more light intensity. The best intensity for the growth condition was under 2,000lux. Third, in the case of the three-wave light, the withering was serious by 1,000lux, and the growth and development was the worst amongst the four introduced lighting systems, therefore, growth under the three-wave light was incongruous. The best intensity for the growth condition was under 2,000lux. Fourth, in the case of the optical fiver, the withering did not existed under 100lux and growth was possible. The growth and development was the amongst in the four introduced lighting systems. Generally, in the more light intensity, more growth was observed, but the value of sight was higher under 1,000lux than under 2,000lux because the falling rate of leaves and the form of the tree was stable. The most effective light was under 1,000lux due to the high photosynthesis in its body. When Daphniphyllum macropodum is introduced into the indoor landscaping space considering the light, the optical fiber, fluorescent lamp, and LED light are suitable to introduce. The three-wave light is unfit. The most proper light intensity by the light source, in the case of the optical fiber, and fluorescent lamp, is 1,000lux, and, in the case of LED light, is 2,000lux. The wild Daphniphyllum macropodum is the species of tree to substitute the Schefflera actinophylla which is the introduced species, and it is expected to be use as the central tree in indoor spaces.
