A Comparison Study of the Effect of Adding Ar or Kr Gas into the Conventional Gas Mixtures in a Matrix Type PDP

  • This paper provides a novel scheme to enhance luminous efficiency within Plasma Display Panels (PDPs). The He-Xe or Ne-Xe mixtures are mainly used in conventional PDP cells, where their discharge characteristics exemplify different behavior. Significantly, the excitation efficiency in He-Xe is lower than that of the Ne-Xe mixture. This paper demonstrates that by adding a small quantity of Ar or Kr gas in Ne-Xe mixture increases cell efficiency, while for the He-Xe mixtures their cell efficiency is reduced.

  • In this paper, We measured an electric and optical characteristics for electrodeless fluorescent lamp system. We used the CCD(charged couple device) and Integrating Sphere Photometer to detect the accurate variation of data and got a characteristic of output voltage and current, luminance, luminous flux etc. And then we come to understand that the efficiency of electrodeless fluorescent lamps are similar to CFLs(compact fluorescent lamp) or HID(high intensity discharge lamp).

  • MgO thin films were deposited by $O^+$ IBAD method and results showed assisting oxygen ion beam energy plays a significant role in characteristics of MgO thin films. The lowest firing inception voltage, the highest brightness and the highest luminous efficiency were obtained when oxygen ion beam energy was 300 eV.

  • A diode structure of field emission lamps based upon carbon-nanotube is studied. The single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNTs) were produced by arc discharge method. We made the 1-inch diode type flat lamp using CNTs. We applied anode voltage gradually to refine the field emission behavior of emitter in dynamic vacuum system to study the emission current. the brightness and efficiency, etc. The field emission properties was estimated by varying gaps between the cathode and anode, contents of the glass frit. The good luminous efficiency is showed in the gap $900{\mu}m$, $1200{\mu}m$ and contents of the proper glass frit. For the upper conditions, the luminous efficiencies were respectively 23.30, 11.12 1m/W.

  • To improvement the performance of PDPs, we developed an ac-PDP with new fence structure. By measuring minimum sustaining voltage(Vs), discharge current(Ion), discharge(Ioff), and brightness of the light from a 4-inch at-PDP, performances of the conventional structure and proposed structure are compared. The experimental results show that the test panel with the proposed new fence structure shows high luminance by 10%, and high luminous efficiency by 30% compared with the conventional structure at the Ne-Xe(8%) gas mixture of 400 torr.

  • As a direct-view flat panel displays, there are many devices, such as plasma display panels(PDPs), vacuum fluorescent displays (VFDs), and light emitting diode(LED). Among these, a PDP is the first type of panel display to be made commercially available. A 'Plasma display' is the general term for a flat display utilizing the light emission that is produced by gas discharge. However, the brightness and Luminous efficiency are still not adequate for consumer television. So, the new sustain electrode type of ac PDP was proposed. By arranging the transparent electrode of quadrangle by zigzag, the area of electrode are reduced, and the length of electrode gap is increased. It generates a high luminous efficiency(corresponding to a 40% improvement of standard type), the same discharge voltage characteristics, and the low power consumption at same luminance.

  • In this paper, the discharge characteristics of ac-type cylindrical discharge devices with diameters (D) in the $50{\sim}400{\mu}m$ range have been investigated numerically. The cylindrical devices have much lower breakdown voltages compared to the coplanar electrode structures. The breakdown voltage of the cylindrical structures increases with the decrease of diameters in $50{\sim}100{\mu}m$ range. In $100{\sim}200{\mu}m$ range, however, the breakdown voltage decreases slightly with the decrease of diameters. Also, as the diameter gets smaller, the electron heating efficiency is greatly improved.

  • The positive column discharge characteristics in the long gap (440 ${\mu}m$) are investigated based on the voltage distribution among three electrodes. In particular, the effects of the amplitude and width of the short pulse applied to the address electrode on the positive column discharge characteristics are examined intensively. By proper controlling of the amplitude and width of the address short pulse, it is found that the positive column discharge in the long gap is well constructed. As a result, under the stable static voltage margin condition, the firing and sustaining voltages are as low as those of conventional short gap(60 ${\mu}m$) discharge($V _f=220V$, $V_s=150V$) and the color purity is improved. Moreover, the luminous efficiency increases up to 60% in comparison with the conventional case.

  • Metal halide (MH) lamps have been largely used due to high luminous efficiency, good color rendering, and long life. Since the metal halide lamps have problems of high ignition voltage and acoustic resonance. Thus, the design of ballast is very difficult for engineers. This paper proposes prototype of electric ballast in order to solve above two problems. The proposed electric ballast is consisted of EMI filter, full wave rectifier circuit, active PFC, DBI(Dual Buck Inverter), dimming circuit and ignitor circuit. The DBI supplies both rectangular voltage and current to the lamp. As the result of the experiment, the acoustic resonance was eliminated and the ignitor circuit was designed to generate high ignition voltage than 5kV. It makes the dimming circuit possible to control the lamp power in range between 230W and 350W.

Analysis of flat fluorescent lamp discharges for LCD backlight unit by using two-dimensional fluid simulation code

  • A two-dimensional fluid simulation code has been developed in order to investigate discharge phenomena and to improve plasma luminous efficiency in a Hg flat fluorescent lamp (FFL) for an LCD backlight unit. In this study, the method of a two-dimensional fluid simulation for FFL is explained and the simulation results of Hg-Ar-Ne mixture gas are presented for the enhancement of the luminance efficiency. The effects of various parameters, such as driving voltage, frequency, and gas mixture ratio, are investigated. The luminance efficiency increased with increasing fraction of mercury but the increasing fraction of argon did not affect the efficiency much.
