The effect of address discharge characteristics by selective reset method is investigated to prevent the weakness of address discharge in the middle of a TV-field without increase of the black luminance. To reduce black luminance in AC PDP usually, the first subfield during one TV frame adopted the conventional rising ramp-reset waveform, whereas the other subfields adopted the subsidiary reset waveform without rising ramp type. As the wall charge for the address discharge was accumulated by only the rising ramp waveform during the first reset period, the wall charge on three electrodes was disappeared as time passed and the address discharge would be weakened in the rear subfields. To prevent a reduction of the address discharge characteristics without decrease the black luminance, the modified rising ramp reset waveform was adopted only in the sixth subfield. As a result, a modified driving method could improve the address discharge characteristics compared with selective reset driving scheme with almost the same black luminance.
The luminance and discharge characteristics of an AC PDP may be significantly affected by a small amount of impurity gas in working gas. Impurity gases such as $O_2$, O , C and $H_2$ can be mixed in the manufacturing and lor discharge processes. In this paper, a small amount of impurity gas in AC PDP are introduced intertimally and the relationship between the amount of impurity gas and the luminance/discharge characteristics are investigated. The luminous efficiency decreased seriously with the increase in the partial pressure of impurity gases, especially in $H_2$, $O_2$ and $CO_2$, Under the condition of the impurity gas ratio of 2x $10^{-3}$ for Ar, $N_2$, $H_2$, $CO_2$ and $O_2$, the luminous efficiency decreased to about 8%, 8%, 32%, 36% and 50%, respectively.

In this study, a stripe type counter electrode discharge cell for PDP was attempted to realize high luminance efficiency and low firing voltage for fine pitch discharge cells. The cells were prepared using electroplated Cu/Ni electrodes coated with glass dielectric layer. The discharge behaviors of such cells were observed. These results indicate that the counter electrode discharge cells have different discharge behavior compared with coplanar cells, which may affect the luminance efficiency of the panel.
In this study, plasma display panels with three different cell volumes were prepared by changing the spaces between the vertical barrier ribs into two and three times the reference structure. The discharge gap and area of the segmented ITO electrode were the same for the three cases, and Ne.20%Xe gas was used. The luminance and luminance efficiency were measured using applied voltage variations. The time evolution and intensity distribution of the infrared, which are related to the vacuum ultraviolet, were observed via intensified, charged, coupled device, and the visible-light intensity profiles were observed using PR-900 to analyze the discharge phenomena in the discharge cell.

Experimental measurements are reported and compared with the results of a two-dimensional fluid simulation for the investigation of the discharge characteristics regarding the change of the mixture ratio of Ne-Xe-He noble gases. The increase of Xe contents results in the increases of luminance and luminous efficiency while it also results in the increase of the breakdown voltage and the discharge time lag. The addition of He gas increases the brightness and the luminance efficiency. When Xe partial pressure is low, the luminance efficiency increases with the amount of He at the same total pressure. When Xe partial pressure is high, however, the luminance efficiency has a maximum value when the partial pressure of He is about 10% of the total pressure for a standard AC PDP cell with Xe fraction of $10{\sim}30%$.
To improve the luminance and luminous efficiency of a surface-discharge alternate current plasma display panel, we analyzed the sustain discharge characteristics as the voltage of the address electrode In the study. As the results, when the address voltage is a half of the sustain voltage in the sustain period, the luminance and luminance efficiency are the highest. The luminance efficiency increased about 16.2%~20.8% compared with the conventional type.
In order to reduce the power consumption in international standard IEC62087, the luminance efficiency should be improved at the low discharge load rather than at the high discharge load. Thus, this paper analysed the characteristics of the discharge at the panels with ITO Gap of $65{\mu}m$, $80{\mu}m$, and $100{\mu}m$ in 50-inch PDP with FHD resolution. It was well known that the long gap panel improves the luminance and the luminous efficiency. However, it is very difficult to drive the panel due to high driving voltage. When the normal driving method was applied at the panel with ITO gap of $100{\mu}m$, the phenomenon of the double peak was generated in the sustain period. We confirmed that main factor of the double peak is the self-erasing discharge. When the CLHS driving method was applied at the panel with ITO gap of $100{\mu}m$, the self-erasing discharge was improved in the sustain period. Also, the $V_S$ and $V_A$ minimum voltage of the CLHS driving method decreased about 9V and 12V compared with those of the normal driving method. Moreover, when the CLHS driving method was applied to the panel with ITO gap of $100{\mu}m$, the luminance and the luminous efficiency increased compared with those of the normal driving method. The luminance and the luminous efficiency greatly increased at the low discharge load. The less discharge load, the higher increase rate of the luminance and the luminous efficiency. Especially, the luminous efficiency at ITO gap of $100{\mu}m$ increased about 26.3% at the discharge load of 4% compared with that at ITO gap of $65{\mu}m$.

The ramp type bias voltage applied to the common electrode during a reset-period is newly proposed to lower the background luminance and to improve the address discharge characteristics in AC-PDP. The positive ramp bias voltage is applied during the ramp-up period, whereas the negative ramp bias voltage is applied during the ramp-down period. The effects of the voltage slopes in both the positive and negative ramp bias voltages on the background luminance and address voltage characteristics are examined intensively. It is observed that the optimized positive and negative ramp bias voltages applied to the common electrode during the ramp-period can lower the background luminance and also enhance the address discharge characteristics of the AC-PDP.

The address discharge characteristics by the various scan-low and common-bias voltages are investigated based on measured address discharge time lags and $V_t$ close-curve analysis. The scan-low voltages are changed under the same voltage difference between the X and Y electrodes during an address period. As the voltage difference between the scan and address electrodes is increased during an address period, the address discharge time lag is shortened but the background luminance is increased. It is found that the improved address discharge characteristics is caused by the effect of the higher external applied voltage during an address period than the accumulated wall charges during a reset period and the high background luminance can be prevented by applying an address-bias voltage during a rising-ramp period and low reset voltage.
