  • Both the SS41 steel and the M.E.F(martensite encapsulated islands of frrite) dual phase steel made of SS41 steel by heat treatment were welded by friction welding, and then manufactured machinemade Vnotch standard Charpy impact specimens and precracked with a fatigue system at BM(base metal), HAZ(heat affected zone) and WZ(weld interface Zone). The impact test of them was performed with an instrumented impact test machine at a number of temperatures in constant loading velocity and the dynamic fracture characteristics were studied on bases of the absorbed energy, dynamic fracture toughness and fractography from the test. The results obtained are as follows; At the room temperature, the absorbed energy is HAZ.geq.WZ.geq.BM in case of the M.E.F. dual phase steel: BM.geq.HAZ.geq.WZ in case of the SS41 steel, HAZ.geq.BM.geq.WZ at the low temperature. The absorbed energy is decreased markedly with the temperature lowering; it is highly dependent on the temperature. The dynamic fracture toughness of the M.E.F. dual phase steel is HAZ.geq.WZ.geq.BM at the room temperature; BM.geq.WZ.geq.HAZ below-60.deg. C. Therefore the reliability of friction welding is uncertain at the low temperature(below-60.deg. C). The dynamic fracture toughness of the SS41 steel; HZA.geq.WZ.geq.BM at overall temperature region. The flaw formed by rotational upsetting pressure was shown y SEM; in this region. The absorbed energy per unit area and dynamic fracture toughness were low relative to other region.

  • Odor dispersion around a cubic building from rooftop odor emissions was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The Shear Stress Transport (here after SST) $k-{\omega}$ model in FLUENT CFD code was used to simulate the flow and odor dispersion around a cubic building. The CFD simulations were performed for three different configurations of cubic buildings comprised of one building, two buildings or three buildings. Five test emission rates were assumed as 1000 OU/s, 2000 OU/s, 3000 OU/s, 4000 OU/s and 5000 OU/s, respectively. Experimental data from wind tunnels obtained by previous studies are used to validate the numerical result of an isolated cubic building. The simulated flow and concentration results of neutral stability condition were compared with the wind tunnel experiments. The profile of streamline velocity and concentration simulation results show a reasonable level of agreement with wind tunnel data. In case of a two-building configuration, the result of emission rate 1000 OU/s illustrates the same plume behavior as a one-building configuration. However, the plume tends to the cover rooftop surface and windward facet of a downstream building as the emission rate increases. In case of a three-building configuration, low emission rates (<4000 OU/s) form a similar plume zone to that of a two-building configuration. However, the addition of a third building, with an emission rate of 5000 OU/s, creates a much greater odorous plume zone on the surface of second building in comparison with a two-building configuration.

  • Perimeter zone is one of the weakest area in buildings and it makes an increase of heating and cooling loads, in addition to condensation or discomfort with cold-draft to residents in winter. Because of this, it needs to be reinforced by active systems. However, they use fossil fuel, and ultimately greenhouse effect is urged. Thus, we proposed BIPV system functioned as solar collector which can substitute active system. As an fundamental stage, heat balance equation in steady-state by Fortran was used not only, in winter for pre-heating effect and electric power capacity during the day, but also in summer, for the latter during the day and sky radiation effect during the night. Especially, we should have considered shading on PV by IES Suncast, since even a little bit of it makes the efficiency too low for the PV modules to work. As a result, in summer day, the PV panel should be tiled in 70 degrees to gain the most electric power. Moreover, we could verify that this model makes higher temperature and heat flux under 0.02 m/s. On the other hand, the PV had the high efficiency with high velocity because of cooling effect behind the PV. Therefore, we should regard the air current distribution later on.

  • The safety of shore structure including the sea dipe is largely affected by typhoon. Accordingly it is desirable to analize the typhoon and determine the wind direction and velocity for use in planning and design of the structure. This method was adopted for the design of the Yong San Gang Estuary Dam. A comparative study of the results of typhoon analysis with the meteorological data obtained through actual observation is summarized as follows; (1) 62% of the typhoons occur during May to June in a year, and 62% of the typhoons which have an influence on the Korean peninsula, especially the proposed estuary dam fsite, proceed eastward through the zone in lat. 36$^{\circ}$-37$^{\circ}$N. Such typhoons occur two to three times a year on the average. (2) Data on typhoon "SARL" were used as a model case in designing the estuary dam, where it was proved that a southwesterly wind had a maximum velocity of 30m/sec in case r=150km, ${\alpha}$=120$^{\circ}$. Within the range of 22$^{\circ}$30'on the right and left side of the fetch line of the estuary dam, the wind direction varied SSW\longrightarrowSW\longrightarrowWSW, and the wind velocity varied 29m/sec\longrightarrow30m/sec\longrightarrow125m/sec. Such phenomemum lasted for five hours. (3) An analysis of data obtained during 44 years at Mok Po Meteorological Station shows that a wind with a velocity of some 25m/sec occurred twelve times in the S-direction and two times in the SW-direction, while that with a velocity of 30m/sec occurred three times in the S-direction, three times in the SSW-direction and one time in the SW-direction. The wind which had an influence on the estuary dam had a direction of SSW\longrightarrowSW\longrightarrowWSW and a velocity of min. 30m/sec. Actually, a wind with a max. velocity of 31.3m/sec occurred in the SSW-direction on March 15 and 16, 1956 where the mean velocity during two hours was 28m/sec and that during four hours was 24.6m/sec. (4) The data obtained through actual observation show that when the velocity is low, the wind with a fixed direction lasts long, and when the velocity is high, it is short-lived. It is difficult to determine the velocity of a wind which blows in a fixed direction for consecutive two or four hours. Therefore, the values obtained through typhoon analysis are larger that those obtained through actual observation, and hence, it is resonable to use the analyzed valuse for design of the estuary dam and shore structures. (5) The greatest effect was had on the estuary dam when typhoon was proceeding at a velocity of 29.71m/sec in the direction of ${\alpha}$=120$^{\circ}$(SW) at a point of R=150km from the center of the typhoon.

  • This paper investigated the characteristics of the turbulent incompressible flow past the orifice ring in an axi-symmetric pipe. The flow field was the turbulent pulsatile flow for Reynolds number of $2{\times}10^{5}$ which was defined based on the maximum velocity and the pipe diameter at the inlet, with oscillating frequence $(f_{os})=1/4{\pi}$ which was considered as quasi-steady state frequence. In the present investigation, finite analytic method was used to solve the governing equations in Navier Stokes and turbulent transport formulations. Particularly at high Reynolds number and low oscillation frequency, the effects of orifice ring on the flow were numerically investigated. The separation zone behind the orifice ring during the acceleration phase was found to be decreased. However, during the deceleration phase, the separation behind the orifice ring for pulsatile flow continuously grow to a size even larger than that in steady flow. The pressure drop in steady flow was found to be constant and always positive while for pulsatile flow the pressure drop change with time. And large turbulent kinetic energy, dissipation rate were found to be located in the region where the flow passes through the orifics ring. The maximum turbulent kinetic energy, generally occurs along the shear layer where the velocity gradient is large.

  • The primary purpose of the present study was to investigate the mechanism causing scour around a pipeline placed on the seabed in a shallow water zone. Such submarine pipelines are usually exposed to currents and waves. The present experiments made estimates for each different flow type. The scour width and depth in the equilibrium scour phase were analyzed by non-dimensional parameters. The experiment in this study considered various parameters: pipe diameters, wave periods, wave heights, and current velocities. Using the experimental results, the correlations of scour width, scour depth, and main non-dimensional parameters such as the Fr number and KC number were analyzed. In the case of steady currents, the scour hole was closely related to the bottom velocity, while the scour hole in waves showed a relatively low correlation to the bottom velocity because when exposed to waves the scour hole was restricted according to the movement distance of the water particles during a wave period. However, the scour width under a steady current was not limited because vortex shedding was well developed from having enough time and distance.

  • An experimental study on the flow over the axisymmetric backward-facing step was carried out. The purposes of the present study are to investigate the effect of the free stream turbulence intensity on the reattachment length and to understand the turbulence structure of the recirculating flows. Local mean and fluctuating velocity components were measured in the separated and reattaching axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer over the wall of convex cylinder placed in a water tunnel by using 2-color 4-beam fiber optics laser Doppler velocimetry. As the free stream turbulence intensity increased, the reattachment length became shorter due to the enhanced mixing in the separated shear layer. It was also observed that the reverse flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy increase with increasing free stream turbulence intensity. Spectral data and flow visualization showed that low-frequency motions occur in the separated flow behind a backward-facing step. These motions have a significant effect on the time-averaged turbulence data.

  • Burner of Flat Flame type expects the uniform flame distribution and NOx reduction. The characteristics of Flat Flame Burner become different according to swirl number in the burner throat. Experiments were focused on swirl effect by four types of swirler with different swirl numbers (0, 0.26, 0.6 and 1.24). It shows many different flow patterns according to swirl number using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) method. The flow of burner with swirler is recirculated by pressure difference between its center and outside. Recirculated air makes stable in flame, and reduced pollutant gas. In case of swirl number 0, main flow passes through axial direction. As swirl number increased, The backward flow develops in the center part of burner and Flow gas recirculates. This is caused by radial flow momentum becomes larger than axial flow by swirled air and the pressure at center drops against surrounding. As swirl number increases, the radial and axial velocity was confirmed to be larger than low swirl numbers. And turbulence intensity have similar pattern. The CTRZ(Central Toroidal Recirculation Zone) is shown evidently when y/D=1 and S=1.24. The boundary-layer between main flow and recirculated flow is shown that the width is seen to be decreased as swirl number increased.

  • Numerical study of air-blast type injector for low emission aircraft engines was conducted. Volume-of-fluids approach was used to track interface of fuel and air. Primary atomization of fuel stream was visualized, and thickness and mean velocity at the injector exit was calculated. Liquid fuel injected from fuel slots joined together as a thin film on preflimer surface, and interacted with swirling air. As instability on the fuel surface increased, separation of fuel as ligaments and droplets occured. The film thickness and velocity were used to as fuel injection boundary condition for reactive flow simulation. Primary reaction zone was formed in vicinity of the fuel nozzle, creating a stable flame inside the combustor.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate fish passage efficiency, based on fish-trap monitoring methodology, in the fishway of Seungchon Weir, which was constructed on the lower region of Yeongsan River in 2011. Seasonal patterns and diel variations of fish movements, fish fauna, and compositions in the fishway were analyzed in relation to the current velocity and location of the trap-setting in the fishway. For the analysis, we conducted seven times surveys in 2012 on the fishway and also conducted intensive monitoring of the fishway as 3 hrs interval for the diel variations of fish fauna and compositions in the fishway. According to the fish-trap monitoring methodology, the total number of fish species was 13 species, which was a 43.3% of the total. Most dominant fish used the fishway was Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae and the relative abundance of the species used the fishway was 33.5% of the total. The season and time zone (in diel variation) observed most frequently in the fishway were July and 18:00-21:00 PM, respectively. The fish movements and use-rates of fishway varied depending on the locations of trap-setting; Fish biomass and the number of species were statistically (p < 0.05) greater in the most right or left-sided traps than in the mid-traps. Also, fish movements and use-rates of fishway were influenced by current velocity on the fishway; fish in the fishway preferred the low current velocity (mean 0.71 m/sec) than the high current velocity (mean 1.13 m/sec). Further long-term studies should be monitored for the efficiency evaluations of the fishway.
