Retention and Drainage Characteristics with Inverse Emulsion Type C-PAM

  • This study was performed to characterize inverse emulsion type cationic polyacrylamide (PAM) and to compare with powder and salt dispersion type PAMs as a retention and drainage aid. Salt dispersion type PAM has defects of high amount of salt which increases conductivity of white water, low active polymer contents and relatively worse retention and drainage properties than others because of its low molecular weight. Powder type PAM has benefit of high active polymer contents and good retention and drainage properties, but defects of low dissolution speed and insoluble particle generation were observed. However, inverse emulsion type showed the best retention and drainage aids among them by controlling molecular weight and morphology easily and it had relatively higher active polymer contents and better solubility.

  • In order to secure competitiveness of the home meal replacement (HMR) industry from a long-term perspective, development of packaging and processing technologies must be achieved. The development of technology that can secure freshness, nutrition, and taste but secures the shelf life is the key to the future growth of HMR. The future of HMR can be considered in terms of nutrition, environment and safety. From the nutritional point of view, it is expected that development of healthy HMR such as low-salt, low-sugar, low-fat, and high fiber and premium HMR with functional ingredient enhanced, and personalized HMR for silver, infant and patients will be done. And it is expected that development of HMR utilizing environmentally friendly food or local food, development of energy reduction and environmentally friendly disinfection technology, development of environmentally friendly packaging material, and providing information on HMR preparation using QR code and RFID from the environmental and safe point of view.

Effects of Isoleucine Supplementation of a Low Protein, Corn-Soybean Meal Diet on the Performance and Immune Function of Weanling Pigs

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of crystalline isoleucine supplementation of a low protein, corn-soybean meal diet on the performance and immune function of weanling pigs. Forty-five crossbred ($Duroc{\times}Landrace{\times}Large\;White$) piglets, weighing an average of $11.00{\pm}0.07kg$, were assigned to either a control diet containing 20% crude protein (0.64% isoleucine), a 16% crude protein diet without isoleucine supplementation (0.41% isoleucine) or a 16% crude protein diet supplemented with isoleucine (0.64% isoleucine). Reducing the crude protein content of the diet from 20 to 16% significantly (p<0.05) reduced both average daily gain and feed intake. Feed conversion also tended (p=0.07) to be poorer for a low protein diet without isoleucine supplementation. Isoleucine supplementation of the 16% crude protein diet increased both gain and feed intake to a level similar to that obtained by pigs fed the 20% crude protein diet (p>0.05). Blood urea nitrogen, serum total protein and serum globulin were significantly (p<0.05) higher for pigs fed the unsupplemented 16% crude protein diet than for pigs fed the isoleucine-supplemented diet or the control. Egg albumin antibody titre decreased significantly (p<0.05) in pigs fed the diet with isoleucine supplementation, whereas the antibody titre of pigs fed the low protein and low isoleucine diet was similar to that of pigs fed the diet containing 20% crude protein and 0.64% isoleucine. It was suggested that crystalline isoleucine supplementation of a low protein and low isoleucine diet improved pig performance but suppressed humoral immune function.

누가 '산업체 수요 조사'를 수요하는가? : 추격형 수요기반 공학교육의 역설 (Who demands the Survey of Industry Demand?: Paradox of Demand-Based Engineering Education Under Catch-up Paradigm)

  • In Korea, engineering education based on industry demand is highly emphasized; the survey of industry demand or company satisfaction is frequently conducted. Although engineering schools have often attempted and implemented the reform of engineering education, it was found that company satisfaction with college education was always low. In this context, this study aimed to find the cause of the low satisfaction. To this end, the social background for the active survey of industry demand and company satisfaction, and its progress were investigated. The findings of this study showed that the survey of industry demand in Korea has limitations in improving the quality of college education or developing its future demand, contrary to its intention. This industry demand based approach has its historical and social root in the Korea-specific model of the catching-up style industry development and technology innovation. Therefore, it is difficult to establish appropriate academy-industry relations and discover future vision based on this model. This study presents a new way to understand and develop the future-oriented industrial and social demand, not just arguing for the uselessness of the survey of industry demand in engineering education.

  • CFM(Cast Forge Method) is widely used in manufacturing industry to produce aluminium parts with good mechanical properties and low production cost. CFM is the process which produces a final products by forging from the initial billet by casting. The study on this paper covers the automatic design method which finds a pertinent shape for initial billet using Fast Fourier Transform, low-pass frequency filtering and FEM simulation of the nonisothermal forging process by DEFORM. These works will give us an information to enhance the low strength of a aluminium casting.

  • Since computerized numerical controller (CNC) emerged as a result of the fusion of the electronics technology and the mechanical technology, there has been continuous evolution of CNC technology in the mechatronics industry. The industry is recently developing a new control system based on the fusion of personal computer (PC) and CNC. Upgraded PC has now integrated into CNC, making various machines possible to exchange data, software and hardware, and to greatly improve man-machine interface. The fusion of PC and CNC can form a new paradigm in technological innovation of not only control system but also whole machinery industry in near the future. Korea lagged behind the developed countries in the development of open control system with the fusion of PC. Turbo-tek, Hyundai Motor and Daewoo are leading companies, but their commercial possibility seems to be low because domestic market is too small to reap a commercial benefit. Nevertheless, the development of the system is an essential step for Korea to embark on a future technological paradigm of the machinery industry. The government needs to play some role for the development, for instance, government R&D projects, institutional building and training of related technicians.

  • Advanced Railway countries are developing technologies of production and management for low-carbon and green growth of their railway industry to hold a dominant position under post-Tokyo protocol regime through integrated approach which uses environmental quantitative analysis of train life cycle by using LCA(Life Cycle Assessment). On the contrary, Korea railroad industry attempts to make an environmental improvement only for using regenerative energy and improvement in operating energy consumption through adapting reduction weight of material technology and etc. without systematic environmental analysis approaches such as comparing and analyzing energy consumption as well as GHG emission in each life cycle stages of train. Therefore, In this paper, low-carbon management and comprehensive environmental improvement for sustainable development of Korea railway industry through analyzing the result of life cycle analysis in abroad are suggested.

시판 식해의 건강 기능 특성 (Health-promoting Functional Properties of Commercial Sik-haes)

  • Sik-hae is a traditional Korean salt-fermented seafood having a low salt content and a high concentration of Lactobacillus, unlike most salt-fermented fish and fish sauce, which have a high salt content and low concentration of Lactobacillus. This study aimed to investigate the health-promoting functional properties of 10 types of commercial sik-haes. The results showed that for the commercial sik-haes studied, angiotensin-I-converting enzyme inhibitory activity, DPPH radical scavenging activity, α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity, and sodium nitrite scavenging activity ranged from 29.0% to 46.3%, 35.5% to 65.4%, 0% to 20.0%, 20.1% to 78.8% , and 17.9% to 82.6%, respectively. Antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Staphylococcus aureus was rarely detected. The results on healthy functional properties suggest that the commercial sik-haes are expected on the antioxidative activity in F-1-F-5, AP-1, BES, and S, xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity in the other 9 types expected for A, and sodium nitrite scavenging activity in the other 9 types expected for AP-2.

A reduction in dietary crude protein with amino acid balance has no negative effects in pigs

  • The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of low crude protein (CP) level with essential amino acids (AA) addition on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, microbiota, and volatile fatty acid composition in growing pigs. A total of 160 growing pigs (Landrace × Yorkshire × Duroc [LYD]; average initial body weight 16.68 ± 0.12 kg) were randomly allotted to one of the four treatments on the basis of initial body weight. A randomized complete block design was used to conduct this experiment in the Research Center of Animal Life Sciences at Kangwon National University. There were ten pigs/replicate with four replicates in each treatment. The treatments include; CON (Control, 17.2% dietary CP level), low protein (LP)-1.10 (15.7% dietary CP level + 1.10% lysine level), LP-1.15 (15.7% dietary CP level + 1.15% lysine level), LP1.2 (15.7% dietary CP level + 1.20% lysine level). The pigs fed CON and LP-1.2 diet showed greater final body weight than that of LP-1.1 diet (p < 0.05). Although average daily gain, average daily feed intake, and feed efficiency did not show any difference in phase 2 and 3, average daily gain and feed efficiency was significantly greater in CON and LP-1.20 in phase 1. However, the average daily feed intake did not show any difference during the experimental period. Isobutyric acid and isovaleric acid composition of LP treatments were lower than CON treatment in phase 2. Total branched chain fatty acid composition was significantly lower in LP treatment in phases 1 and 2. However, there was no significant difference among treatments in phase 3. The results of this study underscore the importance of AA supplementation when implementing a low-protein diet during the early growth phase (16-50 kg) in pigs.
