Wireless sensor networks (WSN) based on low-power technologies become important portion of ubiquitous systems. In this paper, we introduce a WSN-based welfare management system as one of the WSN applications. Especially, we implement S-MAC (Sensor Medium Access control) protocol on our system that saves both cost and power consumption, and we evaluate system performances using the TOSSIM simulator. Sensors and a small database server are placed in the house of participant, which collects and stores some environment conditions of the house. The small servers are connected to each others by wireless ad-hoc network.

Recently, various infrastructure-less IoT networking schemes have been studied to construct local IoT networks based on self-organization. This is, because RPL protocol, which is to support infrastructure based network construction is used to construct local IoT networks. Thus, a self-organization networking and ad hoc path between client and server in local IoT networks is not supported in basis RPL protocol. In this paper, we propose a self-organization networking scheme which support infrastructure-less based IoT network construction in low-power and lossy network based IoT environments consisting of IoT devices with the constrained feature, such as low power, the limited transmission rate and low computing capacity. Through simulation, we show that the proposed self-organization networking scheme improves the performance, in terms of the number of packets generated for end-to end data transmission and the end-to-end delay, compared to basis RPL protocol.
This paper presents an analysis architecture of embedded operating systems for wireless sensor network. Wireless multi-hop sensor networks use battery-operated computing and sensing device. We expect sensor networks to be deployed in an ad hoc fashion, with very high energy constraints. These characteristics of multi-hop wireless sensor networks and applications motivate an operating system that is different from traditional embedded operating system. These days new wireless sensor network embedded operating system come out with some advances compared with previous ones. The analysis is focusing on understanding differences of dominant wireless sensor network OS, such as TinyOS 2.0 with TinyOS 1.x.
ZigBee is a standard for wireless personal area networks(WPANs) based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. It has been developed for low cost and low power consumption. There are two alternative routing schemes that have been proposed for the ZigBee standard: Ad-hoc On-Demand Distance Vector(AODV) and tree routing. The tree routing forwards packets from sensors to a sink node based on the parent-child relationships established by the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC topology formation procedure. In order to join the network, a sensor node chooses an existing node with the strongest RSSI(Received signal strength indicator) signal as a parent node. Therefore, some nodes carry a large amount of traffic load and exhaust their energy rapidly. To overcome this problem, we introduce a new metric based on link quality and traffic load for load balancing. Instead of the strength of RSSI, the proposed scheme uses the new metric to choose a parent node during the topology formation procedure. Extensive simulation results using TOSSIM(TinyOS mote SIMulator) show that the CFR scheme outperforms well in comparison to the conventional tree routing scheme.

Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) are comprised of wireless mobile nodes characterized by a randomly changing topology, high mobility, availability of geographic position, and fewer power constraints. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising candidate for the physical layer of VANET because of the inherent characteristics of the spectral efficiency and robustness to channel impairments. The susceptibility of OFDM to Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI) is a challenging issue. The high mobility of nodes in VANET causes higher Doppler shifts, which results in ICI in the OFDM system. In this paper, a frequency domain com-btype channel estimation was used to cancel out ICI. The channel frequency response at the pilot tones was estimated using a Least Square (LS) estimator. An efficient interpolation technique is required to estimate the channel at the data tones with low interpolation error. This paper proposes a robust interpolation technique to estimate the channel frequency response at the data subcarriers. The channel induced noise tended to degrade the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of the system. Parallel concatenated Convolutional codes were used for error correction. At the decoding end, different decoding algorithms were considered for the component decoders of the iterative Turbo decoder. A performance and complexity comparison among the various decoding algorithms was also carried out.
Short-range wireless communication and networking technologies are becoming increasingly important in enabling useful mobile applications. for example, ZigBee technology is expected to provide low cost and low power connectivity for equipment that needs battery life as long as several months to several years. In addition, ZigBee can be implemented in mesh networks larger than is possible with Bluetooth. The main features of this ZigBee standard are network flexibility, low cost, very low power consumption, and low data rate in an adhoc self-organizing network among fixed, portable and moving devices. Home network/Home automation is one of the key market areas for Zigbee, with an example of a simple network This paper investigates the effect of short range wireless channel on the performance of Zigbee system and DSSS-BPSK signal transmission in AWGN, interference and Rician fading environments. And we investigate performance degradation due to interference and fading effects in short range wireless channel. In particular, the impacts of the fading and interference level on the bit error probability is shown in BER performance figures.

In wireless sensor networks with ad hoc networking capability, sensor nodes are battery operated and are usually disposable once deployed. As a result, each sensor node senses and communicates with limited energy and, thus, energy efficiency has been studied as a key design factor which determines lifetime of a wireless sensor network, and it is more improved recently by using so-called cross-layer optimization technique. In this paper, we propose and implement a new energy saving mechanism that reduces energy consumption during data collection by controlling transmission power at sensor nodes and then measure its performance in terms of lifetime improvement for the wireless sensor network platform ZigbeX. When every sensor node transmits sensed data to its clusterhead, it controls its transmission power down to as low level as communication is possible, resulting in energy saving. Each sensor node controls its transmission power based on RSSI(Received Signal Strength Indicator) of the packet received from its clusterhead. In other words, the sensor node can save energy by controlling its transmission power down to an appropriate level that its clusterhead safely receives the packet it transmits. According to the repetitive experiment of the proposed scheme on the ZigbeX platform using the packet analyzer developed by us, it is observed that the network lifetime is prolonged by up to 21.9% by saying energy during the data collection occupying most amount of network traffic.

Ultra wide band (UWB) technology will be applied in the high rare wireless personal area networks (WPANs) for its high rate, low power, and innate immunity to multipath fading. In this paper, a power aware multi-hop packet relay MAC protocol in UWB based WPANs is proposed and a power aware path status factor (PAPSF), which is derived from SINR and power resource condition of each device, is used to select a suitable relay node. Compared with relaying by piconet coordinator (PNC), which is easily chosen by other ad hoc routing protocol, the new scheme can achieve hi임or throughput, decrease the time required for transmitting high power signal and we can easily distribute the battery power consumption from PNC to other devices in the piconet to prevent the PNC device using up its battery too fast and finally avoid PNC handover too frequently.

This work presents an Internet of Things (IoT) system for home energy management based on a custom-designed Impulse Radio Ultra-Wideband (IR-UWB) transceiver that targets a generic and multi-standard control system. This control system enables the interoperability of heterogeneous devices: it integrates various sensor nodes based on ZigBee, EnOcean and UWB in the same middleware by utilizing an ad-hoc layer as an interface between the hardware and software. The paper presents as a first the design of the IR-UWB transceiver for a portable sensor node integrated with the middleware layer, and also describes the receiver connected to the control system. The custom-designed low-power transmitter on the sensor node is fabricated with 130 nm CMOS technology. It generates a signal with a 1.1 ns pulse width while consuming $39{\mu}W$ at 1 Mbps. The UWB sensor node with a temperature measurement capability consumes 5.31 mW, which is lower than the power level of state-of-the-art solutions for smart-home applications. The UWB hardware and software layers necessary to interface with the control system are verified in over-the-air measurements in an actual office environment. With the implementation of the presented sensor node and its integration in the energy management system, we demonstrate achievement of the broad flexibility demanded for IoT.

To find a location, GPS has been wildly used. But, it is hard to use in indoor because of very weak signal level. To meet indoor requirements, there have been many studies applying wireless communication networks such as WLAN, UWB and ZigBee. Among these, ZigBee is widely adopted in many WSN applications because it has an advantage of low-power and low-cost. In ZigBee, the RSSI is used as range measurement for ad-hoc network. The RSSI are converted to ranges using the signal attenuation model and these ranges become inputs of positioning methods. The obtained position with RSSI has large error because of its poor accuracy. To overcome this problem, ultrasonic sensors are added in many researches. By measuring the arrival time difference of ZigBee and ultrasound as a range measurement, the precise position can be found. However, there are still many problems: scheduling of beacons to transmit signals in a correct order, addition and synchronization of beacons and low-rate positioning rate. At this paper, an efficient method to solve these problems is proposed. In the proposed method, a node transmits ZigBee and ultrasound signal simultaneously. And beacons find the range with the received signals and send it back to a node with ZigBee. The position is computed in a node with the received ranges. In addition, a new positioning algorithm to solve the risk of the divergence in the linearization method and the singularity problem in the Savarese method is presented. Both static and dynamic experimental results show 0.02m RMS errors with high output rate.
