  • For most of application, total system cost is first priority to Engineer. Approach for making system cost down can be to reduce cooling cost by selecting low loss item or reducing filter cost by increasing frequency. SiC Mosfet ($CoolSiC^{TM}$) can approach both of case. This paper shows market-needs and reviews each application with SiC.

  • In this paper, we present a low profile 2-layered meander built-in monopole antenna for portable RFID reader using FDTD(Finite Difference Time Domain) method. The input impedance, return loss, and VSWR in the frequency domain are calculated by Fourier transforming the time domain results. The double meander 2-layer structure is used to enhance the impedance matching and increase the antenna gain. The measured bandwidth of the antenna is 0.895 GHz ~ 0.930 GHz for a S11 of less than -10dB. The measured peak gain of proposed low profile RFID built-in antenna is 2.3 dBi. And the proposed built-in antenna for portable RFID reader can offers relatively wide-bandwidth and high-gain characteristics, in respectively. Experimental data for the return loss and the gain of the antenna are also presented, and they are relatively in good agreement with the FDTD results. This antenna can be also applied to mobile communication field, energy fields, RFID, and home-network operations, broadcasting, and other low profile mobile systems.

  • Bartter syndrome (BS) is an autosomal recessively inherited rare renal tubular disorder characterized by hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis and hyperreninemic hyperaldosteronism with normal to low blood pressure due to a renal loss of sodium. Genetically, BS is classified into 5 subtypes according to the underlying genetic defects, and BS is clinically categorized into antenatal BS and classical BS according to onset age. BS type I is caused by loss-of-function mutations in the $SLC12A1$ gene and usually manifests as antenatal BS. This report concerns a male patient with compound heterozygous missense mutations on $SLC12A1$ (p.C436Y and p.L560P) and atypical clinical and laboratory features. The patient had low urinary sodium and chloride levels without definite metabolic alkalosis until the age of 32 months, which led to confusion between BS and nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI). In addition, the clinical onset of the patient was far beyond the neonatal period. Genetic study eventually led to the diagnosis of BS type I. The low urinary sodium and chloride concentrations may be caused by secondary NDI, and the later onset may suggest the existence of a genotype-phenotype correlation. In summary, BS type I may have phenotype variability including low urine sodium and chloride levels and later onset. A definitive diagnosis can be confirmed by genetic testing.

  • In this paper, a triple-band multiplexer using a microstrip transmission line was designed and fabricated to make use of a low power portable base station. This multiplexer was used in the triple-band including the cellular, WCDMA and LTE mobile frequency band, and designed to have an insertion loss of 0.8 dB, low SWR of 1.5 in the passband and a band rejection of 15 dB in the stopband. From the measured results obtained by a confidence test for the fabricated multiplexer samples, the maximum insertion loss and SWR of the fabricated multiplexer samples in all passbands of 824-894MHz, 1920-2170 MHz and 2500-2600 MHz were below 0.71 dB and 1.38, and the attenuations in the stopbands were better than 15 dB. Therefore, the triple-band multiplexer has good performance and satisfies the design specifications.

  • The anti-obesity effects of yeast hydrolysate (YH) supplementation (1.0 g/d) have already been demonstrated. We investigated whether a low dose of YH (0.5 g/d, YH-500) also has the anti-obesity effects. Thirty obese women were randomly assigned to the control or YH-500 groups. After 8 weeks, weight and body mass index were significantly reduced by the YH treatment (0.5 g/d) (P<0.05). The YH-500 group lost a significant amount of body fat after the 8-week treatment: fat mass 25.9 kg (baseline) versus 23.8 kg (8th week), P<0.01; fat mass ratio 38.8% (baseline) versus 36.5% (8th week), P<0.05. The YH-500 group showed a significant reduction in calorie intake during the 8-week treatment (P<0.001). The control group wanted to eat much more food (P<0.05) and sometimes thought about eating more often compared with the YH-500 group (P<0.05). Whereas the control group showed a slightly increased sweet preference, the YH-500 group showed a significant reduction in sweet preference (P<0.05). In conclusion, low dose YH supplementation (0.5 g/d) may induce a reductions in weight and body fat in obese women via the reduction of calorie intake.

  • High-performance Si integrated passive process was developed using thick oxidation process and Cu-BCB process. This passive process leads to low-cost and high-quality RF module with a small form factor. The fabricated spiral inductor with 225 um inner diameter and 2.5 turns showed the inductance of 2.7 nH and the quality factor more than 30 in the frequency region of 1 ㎓ and above. Also WLCSP-type integrated passive devices were fabricated using the high-performance spiral inductors. The fabricated low pass filter had a parallel-resonance circuit inside the spiral inductor to suppress 2nd harmonics and showed about 0.5 ㏈ insertion loss at 2.45 ㎓. And also the high/low-pass balun had the insertion loss less than 0.5 ㏈ and the phase difference of 182 degrees at 2.45 ㎓.

  • In case of any coastal ocean near the mouth of huge rivers, low salinity water can be formed due to its large amount of freshwater discharge. For the acoustic analysis on the low salinity environment, some oceanographic data of the East China Sea and the Atlantic Ocean were collected through KODC (Korea Oceanographic Data Center) and NODC (National Oceanographic Data Center) online service. In this paper, the T-S gradient diagram is introduced to show a relation between the gradients of temperature and salinity in view of acoustic surface channel formation. Existence of haline channel, quantitative contribution of gradients of salinity and temperature, effectiveness of the channel formation can be known by the T-S gradient diagram. After applying the collected data into the diagram, tropical regions of the Atlantic Ocean show strong haline channel due to its nearly invariant temperature and drastic change of salinity with depth. The averaged transmission loss in the channel is about 5.7 ~ 7.5 dB less than that out of the channel by the results of acoustic propagation model (RAM: Range independent Acoustic Model). On the other hand, the East China Sea and temperate region of the Atlantic ocean have weaker haline channel with less difference of the averaged transmission loss between in and out of the channel as 3.2 ~ 6.0 dB. Although data samples used in this study have limitation to represent the general physical structures of the three ocean regions, the T-S gradient diagram is shown to be useful and acoustic field affected by low salinity environment is investigated in this study.

  • The performance of MAV(Micro Air Vehicles) propellers is highly affected by the aerodynamic characteristics of a 2-D blade airfoil shapes. XFOIL is used to predict the lift and drag coefficients in low Reynolds Number flows. ARA-D 6%, which shows a good performance in low Reynolds Number regions, is selected as a blade airfoil. The 3-D propeller blade shape is optimized with the minimum energy loss condition, and the distribution of aerodynamic coefficients of ARA-D 6% is calculated. The designed optimal blade is compared with the Black Widow's propeller blade shape in the same conditions. The results indicate that the designed propeller installed in MAV can provide a good performance.
