The tensile strength of irradiated 3C-SiC, SiC with artificial point defects, SiC with symmetric tilt grain boundaries (GBs), irradiated SiC with GBs are investigated using molecular dynamics simulations at 300 K. For an irradiated SiC sample, the tensile strength decreases with the increase of irradiation dose. The Young's modulus decreases with the increase of irradiation dose which agrees well with experiment and simulation data. For artificial point defects, the designed point defects dramatically decrease the tensile strength of SiC at low concentration. Among the point defects studied in this work, the vacancies drop the strength the most seriously. SiC symmetric tilt GBs decrease the tensile strength of pure SiC. Under irradiated condition, the tensile strengths of all SiC samples with grain boundaries decrease and converge to certain value because the structures become amorphous and the grain boundaries disappear after high dose irradiation.
The effect of low dose $\gamma$ radiation on photosynthesis and the reduction of photoinhibition in red pepper plant was investigated. The seedling height leaf width and leaf length of pepper were stimulated in plants grown from seeds irradiated with the low dose of 4 Gy. The $O_2$ evolution in the 4 Gy irradiation group was 1.5 times greater than in the control. To investigate the effect of low dose $\gamma$ radiation on response to high light stress, photoinhibition was induced in leaves of pepper by illumination of high light (900 $\mu mol/m^2/s$). Pmax was decreased with increasing illumination time by 20% in the control, while hardly decreased in the 4 Gy irradiation group. The photochemical yield of PSII, estimated as Fv/Fm, was decreased with increasing illumination time by 50% after 4 hours while Fo did not change. However, Fv/Fm in the 4 Gy irradiation group was decreased by 37% of inhibition, indicating that the photoinhibition was decreased by the low dose $\gamma$ radiation. Changes in the effective quantum yield of PSII, $\Phi_{PSII}$, and 1/Fo-1/Fm, a measure of the rate constant of excitation trapping by the PSII reaction center, showed similar pattern to Fv/Fm. And NPQ was decreased after photoinhibitory treatment showing no difference between the control and the 4 Gy irradiation group. These results showed the positive effect of low dose $\gamma$ radiation on the seedling growth and the reduction of photoinhibition.
Purpose: Phytosanitary irradiation treatment can effectively control regulated pests while maintaining produce quality. The objective of this study was to establish the best irradiation treatment for mangosteen, a popular tropical fruit, using a Monte Carlo simulation. Methods: Magnetic resonance image (MRI) data were used to generate a 3-D geometry to simulate dose distributions in a mangosteen using a radiation transport code (MCNP5). Microsoft Excel with visual basic application (VBA) was used to divide the image data into seed, flesh, and rind. Radiation energies used for the simulation were 10 MeV (high-energy) and 1.35 MeV (low-energy) for the electron beam, 5 MeV for X-rays, and 1.25 MeV for gamma rays from Co-60. Results: At 5 MeV X-rays and 1.25 MeV gamma rays, all areas (seeds, flesh, and rind) were irradiated ranging from 0.3 ~ 0.7 kGy. The average doses decreased as the number of fruit increased. For a 10 MeV electron beam, the dose distribution was biased: the dose for the rind where the electrons entered was $0.45{\pm}0.03$ kGy and the other side was $0.24 {\pm}0.10$ kGy. Use of an electron kinetic energy absorber improved the dose distribution in mangosteens. For the 1.35 MeV electron beam, the dose was shown only in the rind on the irradiated side; no significant dose was found in the flesh or seeds. One rotation of the fruit while in front of the beam improved the dose distribution around the entire rind. Conclusion: These results are invaluable for determining the ideal irradiation conditions for phytosanitary irradiation treatment of tropical fruit.
Effect of low dose gamma radiation on the growth of groundnut (Arachis hypognea L.) were investigated with respect to germination rate, seedling development and yield. Seeds of “Palpal” cultivar were irradiated with 0.5~20 Gy of ${\gamma}$ radiation in order to determine the hermetic effect of low dose radiation. The germination rate of ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation group was lower than that of the control but the seedling height of groundnut grown from seeds irradiated with low dose ${\gamma}$-ray was slightly higher than that of the control. The number of pod and kernels, and the seed yield increased by 27%, 17% and 19 %, respectively, in the 12.0 Gy irradiation group compared to that in the control group. The 100 seed weight was 87.2 g in the 4.0 Gy irradiation group, which was 11% heavier than 78.3 g in the control group. Low dose radiation showed an enhancement effects on the growth and yield components of groundnut.
Low temperature irradiation can significantly harden metallic materials and often lead to strain localization and ductility loss in deformation. This paper provides a review on the radiation effects on the deformation of metallic materials, focusing on microscopic and macroscopic strain localization phenomena. The types of microscopic strain localization often observed in irradiated materials are dislocation channeling and deformation twinning, in which dislocation glides are evenly distributed and well confined in the narrow bands, usually a fraction of a micron wide. Dislocation channeling is a common strain localization mechanism observed virtually in all irradiated metallic materials with ductility, while deformation twinning is an alternative localization mechanism occurring only in low stacking fault energy(SFE) materials. In some high stacking fault energy materials where cross slip is easy, curved and widening channels can be formed depending on dose and stress state. Irradiation also prompts macroscopic strain localization (or plastic instability). It is shown that the plastic instability stress and true fracture stress are nearly independent of irradiation dose if there is no radiation-induced phase change or embrittlement. A newly proposed plastic Instability criterion is that the metals after irradiation show necking at yield when the yield stress exceeds the dose-independent plastic instability stress. There is no evident relationship between the microscopic and macroscopic strain localizations; which is explained by the long-range back-stress hardening. It is proposed that the microscopic strain localization is a generalized phenomenon occurring at high stress.

Physicochemical, microbiological, and sensory properties of barleys irradiated by gamma ray at 1.2kGy, 10.1kGy, or 30.5kGy were investigated every 40 days during the storage at 25℃ and 50% relative humidity. Moisture content of the irradiated barleys decreased but crude lipid content increased during the storage. TBA values increased in proportion to the irradiation dose and to the storage period. In Hunter's color, L, a, and b values of 30.5kGy dose irradiated barleys were higher than those of the non irradiated barleys right after irradiation and this trend continued during the storage. Numbers of mesophilic and psychrophilic bacteria in the non irradiated barleys and 1.2kGy dose irradiated barleys were higher than those in the barleys irradiated at 10.1kGy and 30.5kGy during the storage. Numbers of yeasts and molds in the irradiated and non irradiated barleys were low and they did not greatly increase during the storage. In sensory evaluation, acidic odor of the barleys was strong at the 10.1kGy and 30.5 kGy dose irradiation but barley odor and humid odor were not significantly different among the groups depending upon the radiation dose and storage period.
The aim of this study is to examine the removal efficiency of pathogen (Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella typhimurium) on meat and fish products (packing condition: vacuum or not and storage temperature: $4^{\circ}C$ or $-20^{\circ}C$) repeatedly exposed at low-dose gamma irradiation. In case of meat products (beef and chicken), E. coli O157:H7 was not observed at the level of 2 kGy single gamma irradiation and 0.5 kGy repeated gamma irradiation and S. Typhimurium was not observed at the level of 2 kGy single gamma irradiation and 1 kGy repeated gamma irradiation. In case of fish products, E. coli O157:H7 and S. Typhimurium were not detected at the level of 0.5 kGy single and repeated gamma irradiation. These results showed that microorganisms on fish products were more efficiently removed than those of meat products with low-dose gamma irradiation. Generally, each packing condition made no difference. However, the products (fish and meat) stored at $-20^{\circ}C$ needed more higher dose gamma irradiation than products at $4^{\circ}C$.
Present study aimed to investigate recovering effect of propolis on blood components and tissues of mouse after low dose irradiation. It is verified that the contents of Fe, Mg, P, Zn and Cu in propolis dosed blood are increased slightly than irradiated blood, however, the contents of Ba and Pb are decreased to one tenth than irradiated blood and the contents of Fe and P are increased to 10% than control group. We consider this result as the propolis acts a role of defence factor minimizing changes of elements caused by irradiation in blood. Among the blood components, Glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) value is increased after the radiation but after dosed with propolis and irradiated the value is decreased, suggesting that propolis as a buffering material against irradiation. After dosed with propolis, a number of spermatogenic cells are lowered in testis tissue, however, nucleus and cytoplasm are clearly observed in spermatogonia, spermatocytes and spermatid cells. And nucleus and membrane of cells in the proximal convoluted tubule of renal tissue are clearly observed. Also, cytoplasmand membrane of surface mucous cells in stomach tissue are appeared in normal which is almost like those of control group. We consider that the propolis used in this study is preventing deformations of cells increasing resistance capacity against irradiation rather than recovering damaged tissues.
Firstly, we compared the two staining techniques, Giemsa and Acridine orange, to determine micronuclei on samples of cultures of five healthy human peripheral blood lymphocytes after ${\gamma}-irradiation\;(^{137}Cs)$ in dose ranges of 0 to 800cGy. It was found that the Acridine orange staining method gives more reliable results than the usual Giemsa staining method in micronucleus tests. Moreover, the frequency of micronuclei in cytokinesis-blocked human B-lymphocytes was studied after in vitro irradiation in dose ranges of 0 to 50cGy. After setting and separating the B-lymphocytes, the frequency of radiation-induced micronuclei were observed as the end-point markers for the low-dose radiation dosimetry after staining with Giemsa and Acridine orange dyes. The micronuclei frequency in B-lymphocytes was significantly elevated from 10 to 30cGy ${\gamma}-irradiation$. The determination of micronuclei in B-lymphocytes after staining with Acridine orange was higher than that of Giemsa. The frequency of micronuclei in B-lymphocytes was observed to be at least two times higher than those of T-lymphocytes Giemsa in dose increasing. Therefore, the determination of low-dose radiation-induced micronuclei in B-lymphocytes after staining with Acridine orange is likely to have the greatest potential in the estimation of low dose radiation exposure.

The intrauterine irradiation is essential to achieve adequate tumor dose to centeral tumor mass in radio therapy for uterine malignancy. The complications of pelvic organ are known to be directly related to radiation dose and physical parameters. The comparison study of currently using 2 systems was undertaken. The simulation films and medical records of 135 patients who was treated with intrauterine irradiation at one of general hospitals in Busan and Seoul between Jan. 1983 and June 1983, were critically analized and physical parameters of low dose rate system and remote controlled high dose rate system were measured. The physical parameters include distances between lateral walls of vaginal fornices, longitudinal and lateral angles of tandem to the body axis, the distance from the external os of uterine cervix to the central axis of ovoids, the radiation dose ratio to rectum and bladder to reference point A. Followings were summary of study results: 1. In distances between lateral walls of vaginal fornices the low dose rate system showed wide distribution and relatively larger distances. In low dose rate system 5.0-5.9 cm was $55.89\%$ 6.0-6.9 cm: $23.53\%$, 4.0-4.9cm: $10.29\%$, 3.0-3.9cm: $10.29\%$, and in high dose rate system 5.0-5.9cm was $80.59\%$, 4.0-4.9cm: $17.91\%$, $6.0\~6.9\;cm:\;1.5\%$. 2. In lateral angulation of tandem to body axis, the low does system revealed mid position (the position along body axis) $64.7\%$, Lt. deviation $19.13\%$ and Rt. deviation $16.17\%$. However the high dose rate system revealed mid position $49.26\%$ Lt. deviation $40.29\%$ and Rt. deviation $10.45\%$. 3. In longitudinal angulation of tandem to body axis the mid position was $11.77\%$ and anterior angulation $88.23\%$ in low dose rate system but in high dose rate system the mid position was $1.56\%$ and anterior angulation $98.44\%$. 4. Down ward displacement of ovoids below external os was only $2.94\%$ in low dose rate system and $67.69\%$ in high dose rate system. 5. The radiation dose ration to rectum to reference point A was $102.70\%$ in high dose rate system and $70.09\%$ in low dose rate system. The dose ratio to bladder to reference point A was $78.14\%$ in high dose rate system and $75.32\%$ in low dose rate system.
