  • We have developed magnetocardiography(MCG) and impedance magnetocardiography(I-MCG) for detecting heart disease by using dc-SQUID technology. The MCG system, using low-Tc SQUID, is being applied commercially for diagnosing heart disease. Using the low-Tc MCG system, many clinical studies on detection of abnormality have been performed. Furthermore, we have developed a portable MCG system using high-Tc SQUID. For detecting changes in kinetic impedance in the heart, an I-MCG system has been demonstrated. The I-MCG system could detect the mechanical movement of the heart. In this report, we review current clinical applications of magnetocardiography and impedance magnetocardiography.

  • We have fabricated a helmet type magnetoencephalogrphy(MEG) with a $1^{st}$ order gradiometer in vacuum to improve the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) and the boil-off rate of liquid helium(LHe). The axial type first-order gradiometer was fabricated with a double relaxation oscillation SQUID(DROS) sensor which was directly connected with a pickup coil. The neck space of LHe dewar was made to be smaller than that of a conventional dewar, but the LHe boil-off ratio appeared to increase. To reduce the temperature of low Tc SQUID sensor and pickup coil to 9 K, a metal shield made of, such as copper, brass or aluminum, have been usually used for thermal transmission. But the metal shield exhibited high thermal noise and eddy current fluctuation. We quantified the thermal noise and the eddy current fluctuation of metal. In this experiment, we used the bobbin which was made of an alumina to wind Nb superconductive wire for pickup coil and the average noise of coil-in-vacuum type MEG system was $3.5fT/Hz^{1/2}$. Finally, we measured the auditory evoked signal to prove the reliability of coil-in-vacuum type MEG system.

  • Ferromagnetism in manganese compound semiconductors open prospects for tailoring magnetic and spin-related phenomena in semiconductors with a precision specific to III-V compounds. Also it addresses a question about the origin of the magnetic interactions that lead to a Curie temperature(Tc) as high as 110 K for a manganese concentration of just 5%. Zener's model of ferromagnetism, originally suggested for transition metals in 1950, can explain Tc of $Ga_{1-x}Mn_x$ As and that of its IT-VI counterpart $Zn_{1-x}Mn_x$ Te and is used to predict materials with Tc exceeding room temperature, an important step toward semiconductor electronics that use both charge and spin. In this article, we present not only the experimental result but calculated Curie temperature by RKKY interaction. The problem in making III-V semiconductor has been the low solubility of magnetic elements, such as manganese, in the compound, since the magnetic effects are roughly proportional to the concentration of the magnetic ions. Low solubility of magnetic elements was overcome by low-temperature nonequilibrium MBE{molecular beam epitaxy) growth, and ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As was realized. Magnetotransport measurements revealed that the magnetic transition temperature can be as high as 110 K for a small manganese concentration.

  • The temperature dependent saturation magnetization curve of amorphous Fe67 Co18B14Si1, alloy was measured using a SQUID magnetometer and vibrating sample magnetometer from 5 K up to 800 K. Inelastic neutron neutron scattering measurements also have been used to study the long wavelength spin dynamics of this high Tc amorphous ferromagnetic alloy. The magnon dispersion curve exhibit the conventional quadratic relationship E = D (T) q2 + $\Delta$, typical of an iso=obtained from a low temperature magnetization curve, which was consistent with the value obtained from the analysis oif inelastic neutron scattering data after consideration of its temperature dependence.

  • We developed a four-channel first order gradiometer system to measure magnetoencephalogram for mice. We used double relaxation oscillation SQUID (DROS). The diameter of the pickup coil is 4 mm and the distance between the coils is 5 mm. Coil distance was designed to have good spatial resolution for a small mouse brain. We evaluated the current dipole localization confidence region for a mouse brain, using the spherical conductor model. The white noise of the measurement system was about 30 fT/$Hz^{1/2}$/cm when measured in a magnetically shielded room. We measured magnetic signal from a phantom having the same size of a mouse brain, which was filled with 0.9% saline solution. The results suggest that the developed system has a feasibility to study the functions of brain of small animals.

  • Wild and cultured fish including olive flounder, sea bass, rock bream, yellowtail, gray mullet, gizzard shad, black rockfish, red seabream and squid were collected from a fish market located on the coast of Korea, and the antibiotic content of their muscle was investigated. Tetracycline group antibiotics were not detected in the 108 individuals of 9 species of wild fish. However, oxytetracycline (OTC) and tetracycline(TC) were detected in some samples of the 111 individuals in 7 cultured live fish species. The detected ranges of OTC and TC were ND~ 0.06 and ND~ 0.03, respectively. Five different fluoroquinolone antibiotics were also tested for, but were not detected in the wild fish species. Only small amount of criprofloxacin(ND~0.029 mg/kg) were detected in a few cultured fish samples. Oxolinic acid was not detected in either wild and cultured fish samples. Results showed that even very low levels of antibiotics could be detected by the testing methods used. Antibiotics were identified in a few fish samples but levels were far below the maximum allowable limits of the Korean Food Code, and the safety of fish being sold in markets, with regard to antibiotic levels, was confirmed.
