Supercavitation is a modern technique which can be used to surround an underwater vehicle with a bubble in order to reduce the resistance of the vehicle. When the vehicle is at low speed in the deep sea, the cavitation number is relatively big and it is difficult to generate a cavity large enough to envelope the vehicle. In this condition, the artificial cavity, called ventilated cavity, can be used to solve this problem by supplying gas into the cavity and can maintain supercavitating condition. In this paper, a relationship between the ventilation gas supply rate and the cavity shape is determined. Based on the relationship a ventilation rate control is developed to maintain the supercavitating state. The performance of the ventilation control is verified with a depth change control. In addition, dynamics modeling for the supercavitating vehicle is performed by defining forces and moments acting on the vehicle body in contact with water. Simulation results show that the ventilation control can maintain the supercavity of an underwater vehicle at low speed in the deep sea.

Man-made reservoirs over 95% in Korea are shallower than 10 meters in depth, which is apt to cause eutrophication. This study has characterized long-term trends in water quality factors for the selected six reservoir points in the Kum River watersheds, and then estimated the seasonal trophic state index for each reservoir. The reservoir trophic state was evaluated at four trophic levels using the Korean trophic state index, TSIKO. It is observed from seasonal results for six reservoirs that the highest value of the trophic state index is estimated in summer while the trophic state index value is low in spring and winter seasons. Especially, the Boryeong Lake has a relatively lower trophic state index since this reservoir has been managed properly for water withdrawal and irrigation. It is expected that the seasonal trophic state index resulted from this study can contribute toward long-term water quality improvement plans for reservoirs.

The ultimate objective of this study is to develop a water turbine appropriate for low-head open channels to effectively utilize the unused hydropower energy of rivers and agricultural waterways. The application of a cross-flow runner to open channels as an undershot water turbine has been considered and, to this end, a significant simplification was attained by removing the turbine casing. However, the flow field of an undershot cross-flow water turbine possesses free surfaces, and, as a result, the water depth around the runner changes with variation in the rotational speed such that the flow field itself is significantly altered. Thus, clear understanding of the flow fields observed with free surfaces to improve the performance of this turbine is necessary. In this study, the performance of this turbine and the flow field were evaluated through experiments and numerical analysis. The particle image velocimetry technique was used for flow measurements. The experimental results reflecting the performance of this turbine and the flow field were consistent with numerical analysis. In addition, the flow fields at the inlet and outlet regions at the first and second stages of this water turbine were clarified.
A rainwater utilization facility consists of its catchment area, treatment facility, storage tank, supply facility and pipes in general. The rainwater storage tank which occupies the largest area of the facility has been usually considered quantitatively for determining the storage capacity. Hence, there is little information on water quality improvement by sedimentation in a rainwater storage tank in operation. In this study, we measured the rainwater quality in a rainwater storage tank in operation during late spring and summer, and showed water quality improvement of turbidity removal of 25~46% by sedimentation in a rainwater storage tank under a fixed water level without inflow and outflow after runoff ceased. It is necessary to have a considerable distance between the inlet and outlet of the tank and, if possible, it is recommended that the design should allow for an effective water depth of over 3 m and supply rainwater near the water surface. The operation method which increases the retention time by stopping rainwater supply for insuring low turbidity is recommended when the turbidity of rainwater runoff is high. And also more efficient operation and maintenance of the rainwater utilization facility is expected through the tailored design and operation of the facility considering particle removal and behavior.
Spatial-temporal variations in physiochemical water qualities (temperature, salinity, DO, SPM, POC and nutrients) of surface and bottom waters were investigated along the mid-western coastal area (Taean Peninsula to Gomso Bay) of Korea. Spatial distribution patterns of temperature and salinity were mostly controlled by the physical mixing process of freshwater from Geum River and/or Gyunggi Bay with nearby coastal water. A strong tidal front is formed off Taean Peninsula during spring and summer. Seasonal variations in nutrient concentrations, lower in spring and summer and higher in fall and winter, are primarily regulated by magnitude of phytoplankton occurrence rather than freshwater loadings into the bay. Based on seasonal and spatial variability of physicochemical parameters, water quality of the study area can be divided into four water masses; Gyunggi Bay-influenced Water Mass (GBWM), Geum River-influenced Water Mass (GRWM), Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water Mass (YSBCWM) and Cheonsu Bay Water Mass (CBWM). Water quality of the GBWM (Taean Peninsula coastal area), which has relatively low salinity and high concentrations of nutrients, is strongly controlled by the Gyunggi Bay coastal water, which is under influence of the Han River freshwater. In this water mass, the mixed layer is always developed by strong tidal mixing. As a result, a tidal front is formed along the offshore boundary of the mixed layer. Such tidal fronts probably play an important role in the distribution of phytoplankton communities, SPM and nutrients. The GRWM, with low salinity and high nutrients, especially during the flood summer season, is closely related to physiochemical properties of the Geum River. During the flood season, nutrient-enriched Geum River water mass extends up to 60 km away from the river mouth, potentially causing serious environmental problems such as eutrophication and unusual and/or noxious algal blooms. Offshore (<$30{\sim}40m$ in water depth) of the study area, YSBCWM coupled with a strong thermocline can be identified in spring-summer periods, exhibiting abundant nutrients in association with low temperature and limited biological activity. During spring and summer, a tidal front is formed in a transition zone between the coastal water mass and bottom cold water mass in the Yellow Sea, resulting in intensified upwelling and thereby supplying abundant nutrients to the GBWM and GRWM. Such cold bottom water mass and tidal front formation seems to play an important role in controlling water quality and further regulating physical ecosystem processes along mid-western Korean coastal area.
To clarify the light condition which influence phytoplankton ecology in Kyeonggi Bay, light intensity, compensation depth, extinction coefficient, transparency and suspended substances are studied from May 1981 to September 1982.Light intensities lie within adequate values for the phytoplankton growth from spring to autumn. However, in the winter season the light intensities show less than 4.8mw/$\textrm{cm}^2$ on the surface resulting lower than optimum irradiance. Light intensity could be a limiting factor for phytoplankton growth in winter. Compensation depths seasonally varied over an annual period in this study. Especially, in winter, compensation depths are confined to only 1-2m below the surface. Extinction coefficient(K) values are relatively high over an year cycle. K values is highest in winter and lowest in summer. Transparency shows seasonal variation. Tansparency is high in summer and low in winter. Thus low light intensity, low compensation depth, low transparency and high extinction coefficient in winter are due to the high turbidity and high concentrations of suspended substances. High concentrations of S.S. in winter result from the sediments and detritus resuspended by the winter turbulence induced by the strong winter winds and the convectional mixing. In summer, good light condition and low turbidity may result from the thermal stability of water mass preventing the resuspension of sediment particles.
This study aimed to analyze water quality (temperature, secchi depth, DO, $NH_4$, $NO_3$, $PO_4$, TN, TP, chlorophyll a) and trophic state index during the period of year 2000 ${\sim}$ 2004 in Lake Juam, Lake Dongbok and Lake Youngsan. Lakes Juam and Dongbok except Lake Youngsan were stratified during warm seasons. Water turbidity estimated by secchi disk depth was the highest in Lake Youngsan compared with other lakes. DO concentrations were low in the bottom water when chlorophyll a was high in Lake Juam and Dongbok. Nutrient concentrations were higher in Lake Youngsan than other lakes whereas chlorophyll a was highest in Lake Dongbok. Lake Youngsan was the most eutrophic compared to other two lakes based on the Trophic State Idex (TP) and TSI (SD), The TSI (CHL) was high but the TSI (TP) were low in Lake Juam and Dongbok. These results suggest phytoplankton may be limited by phosphates (P) in Lake Juam and Dongbok whereas light availability in the water column may affect growth of phytoplankton in Lake Youngsan.

Studies of the distribution of micro-phytoplankton community and chlorophyll a concentration have focused on the vertical profiles of marine environmental factors such as water temperature, salinity, sigma-t, light intensity, and dissolved oxygen in the continental slope on the east parts of East China Sea in the early summer of 2009. Water temperature showed a gradual reduction according to the depth. While the salinity was low in the surface layer showing a mixed down to the relatively subsurface layer, it was increased with an increase in the depth at the middle and bottom layers showing a maximum value at 150~200 m followed by a decreasing aspect afterwards, although the change was not large. The change of sigma-t was governed by the water temperature, and gradually increased in the surface layer with an increase in the depth, showing a value higher than in the surface layer by about 3 $kg/m^3$ at the bottom layer. Although the intensity of light was exponential reduced in the surface layer, the compensation depth was located at the depth of about 80m. The vertical profiles of chlorophyll a concentration was governed by the intensity rather than the changes in water temperature or salinity, exhibiting a maximum value at the compensation depth corresponding to 1% in the surface light intensity. The micro-phytoplankton communities consisted of 56 genera 103 species showing a relatively variety, while the standing crop was also changed to 112.0~470.0 cells/L in the pelagic environment, showing a maximum chlorophyll a concentration. Although a variety of dominant species appear at low dominance without dominant species appearing with a right-wing point in the phytoplankton communities, the silicoflagellate, Otactis otonaris at the station A and the dominance of 26% due to Leptocylindrus mediterraneus at the station C have been judged to be unusual. For community analysis of infinitesimal creatures such as phytoplankton of oligotrophic waters through the present study, ecology studies through vertical sample collection agreeing with the results of continuous observation such as identification of vertical distribution in a marine environment or of maximum chlorophyll layers have been considered rather than a survey method with intervals of a given depth such as surface, subsurface, middle and bottom layers.
Optimal environmental conditions, that sustained fastest growth, lowest mortality and abnormality of the scallop Patinopecten yessoensis, were identified from field experiments undertaken at Chumunjin during 1991-1998. Temperature within the water column 10~30 m depth ranged between 5 and 23$^{\circ}C$; high temperature and daily fluctuation resulted in growth retardation and heavy mortality of the scallop. Optimal salinity range was between 31.5 and 34.5%0 and water transparency 6.0 and 18.1 m, which was significantly affected by phytoplankton density. Chlorophyll concentration ranged between 0.04 and 3.51 f.lgfL. Low temperature and high chlorophyll concentration appear to support faster growth of the scallop. Optimal periods of transplantation for intermediate culture were between mid July and early November: cultured under high density during July-August as a first step and under low density during mid September through early November as a second step. Optimal stocking density in square net cage (<35${\times}$35 em) for intermediate culture was 30-40 individuals per cage for main culture using lantern net and 80 -100 individuals of the size of 1.5 ~ 3.0 em shell height per cage for sowing culture. During the intermediate culture, the highest growth was realized, when the cage was held at water depth between 10 and 15 m. Water depth below 25 m, however, was best to avoid mass mortality during the periods of abnormally high water temperature and high variation of water temperature. The daily growth rate during the intermediate culture was between 0.019~0.381 mm; low in January and February but high in March and April. It is suggested that the main culture is commenced before June under low stocking density to avoid the possibility of mass mortality during summer by high water temperature.
This study analyzed the synoptic distribution and vertical structure about four cases of precipitation occurrences using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and upper level data of winter intensive observation to be performed by National Institute of Meteorological Research at Bukgangneung, Incheon, Boseong during 63days from 4 JAN to 6 MAR in 2012, and Observing System Experiment (OSE) using 3DVAR-WRF system was conducted to examine the precipitation predictability of upper level data at western and southern coastal regions. The synoptic characteristics of selected precipitation occurrences were investigated as causes for 1) rainfall events with effect of moisture convergence owing to low pressure passing through south sea on 19 JAN, 2) snowfall events due to moisture inflowing from yellow sea with propagation of Siberian high pressure after low pressure passage over middle northern region on 31 JAN, 3) rainfall event with effect of weak pressure trough in west low and east high pressure system on 25 FEB, 4) rainfall event due to moisture inflow according to low pressures over Bohai bay and south eastern sea on 5 MAR. However, it is identified that vertical structure of atmosphere had different characteristics with heavy rainfall system in summer. Firstly, depth of convection was narrow due to absence of moisture convergence and strong ascending air current in middle layer. Secondly, warm air advection by veering wind with height only existed in low layer. Thirdly, unstable layer was limited in the narrow depth due to low surface temperature although it formed, and also values of instability indices were not high. Fourthly, total water vapor amounts containing into atmosphere was small due to low temperature distribution so that precipitable water vapor could be little amounts. As result of OSE conducting with upper level data of Incheon and Boseong station, 12 hours accumulated precipitation distributions of control experiment and experiments with additional upper level data were similar with ones of observation data at 610 stations. Although Equitable Threat Scores (ETS) were different according to cases and thresholds, it was verified positive influence of upper level data for precipitation predictability as resulting with high improvement rates of 33.3% in experiment with upper level data of Incheon (INC_EXP), 85.7% in experiment with upper level data of Boseong (BOS_EXP), and 142.9% in experiment with upper level data of both Incheon and Boseong (INC_BOS_EXP) about accumulated precipitation more than 5 mm / 12 hours on 31 January 2012.
