  • This study investigates dynamic wetting behaviors of a water droplet placed on surfaces with different wettability and nano-structures. Hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties on as-received silicon wafers were prepared by fabricating thin films of hydrophobic polymer and hydrophilic nanoparticles via layer-by-layer coating. Dynamic advancing contact angle of droplets on the prepared surfaces was measured at various moving velocities of triple contact line with a high-speed video camera. As advancing velocity of triple contact line increased, dynamic advancing contact angle on the as-received silicon and hydrophobic surfaces sharply increased up to $80^{\circ}$ in the range of order of mm/sec whereas the SiO2 nanoparticle-coated hydrophilic surface maintained low contact angles of about $30^{\circ}$ and then it gradually increased in the velocity range of order of hundred mm/sec. The improved dynamic wetting ability observed on the nanostructured hydrophilic surface can benefit the performance of various phase-change heat transfer phenomena under forced convective flow.

  • Generally, non-uniformity and removal rate are important factors on measurements of both wafer and die scale. In this study, we verify the effects of the pressure and relative velocity on the results of the chemical mechanical polishing and the effect of pattern density on inter layer dielectric chemical mechanical polishing of patterned wafer. We suggest an appropriate modeling equation, transformed from Preston\`s equations which was used in glass polishing, and simulate the removal rate of patterned wafer in chemical mechanical polishing. Results indicate that the pressure and relative velocity are dominant factors for the chemical mechanical polishing and pattern density effects on removal rate of pattern wafers in die scale. The modeling is well agreed to middle and low density structures of the die. Actually, the die used in Fab. was designed to have an appropriate density, therefore the modeling will be suitable for estimating the results of ILD CMP.

  • A numerical simulation is performed fur developing turbulent flow in a strongly curved 180 deg pipe and its downstream tangent by a new solution code(PowerCFD) which adopts an unstructured cell-centered method. The governing equations are discretized as the full elliptic from of the equations of motion. Three typical two-equation turbulence models of low-Reynolds-number form are used to approximate the turbulent stress field. Solutions fur both streamwise and circumferential velocity components are compared with the experimental data by Azzola et at.(1986). The ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ model by Wilcox(1988) is found to give better prediction performance than the other two. Predicted secondary velocities and streamwise velocity component contours at sequential longitudinal stations are also presented in order to enable a detailed description of the complete flow. It is also found that, in the bend both mean streamwise and secondary velocities never achieve a fully-developed state and the code is capable of producing very well the complex nature of steady flow in a strongly curved pipe.

  • Effects of blasting vibrations on curing concrete have not been well studied. As a result, unreasonable and strong blasting vibration constraints have been placed on blasting when it occurs in the vicinity of curing concrete. To study the effects of blasting on curing concrete blocks of 33.3X27.7X16.2 cm were molded and placed on the quarry. Several sets of concrete blocks were subjected separately to peak vibrations of 0.25, 0.5. 1.0, 5.0, and 10cm/sec. The impulses of blasting vibrations were applied with thirty-minute intervals. Along with unvibrated concrete blocks, the vibrated concrete samples cored with 60.3 mm in diameter were measured for elastic moduli, sonic velocity and uniaxial compressive strength. Test results can be summarized as follows; 1. The blasting vibrations between 6 and 8 hours after pour generally lowered on the uniaxial compressive strength of the concrete. 2. A low blasting vibration of 0.25 cm/sec did not affect the uniaxial compressive strength. As the magnitude of the blasting vibration increases, compressive strength of concrete is decreased. 3. Physical properties of the P-wave velocity, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio showed a weakly decreasing trend in the concrete blocks vibrated between 6 and 8 hours after pour.

  • This study was conducted to assess the possibility of the field application of the iceharbor-type precast fishway. When overflow depth of weir is 4.0 cm in model fishway, upper part velocities appear appropriate for upstream migration of fish and the lowest overflow wall (right line) in lower part has shown velocity distribution more or less inadequate for upstream migration. Except that right line, left and middle line revealed that velocities are appropriate for upstream migration of fish. Therefore, we concluded that this fishway owing to be not broad growth width of overflow velocities according to increasing discharges can correspond to variation of water level. Also We consider that various velocities in fishway were effective, because slow velocity line can guide flow for upstream migration. For low flow, the arrangement of different crest level or each overflow part (higher left, middle and lower right, or lower left, middle and higher right) was more effactive than unform crert level. Hole plays an important role as migration pass during drought and flood flow. Therefore, We concluded that this fishway can cope with water depth variation by various overflow wall height change and raise the field applicability with better performance hydraulically and structurally.

  • This study was conducted to develop proper model for cold storage facility that could of for uniform heat movement and air movement f3r green grocery and improve improper design of the existing container-type cold storage facility. For that reason, new model(dome-type) cold storage facility was developed using 3-D CFD(computational fluid dynamics) simulation. The size was 6m${\times}$6m${\times}$5m. Its size and configuration were same to simulation model. Unit cooler was designed to send cold air in 4 side ways. A dome-type cold storage facility showed uniform distributions of air temperature and velocity because cold air was forced to move down along the ceiling and the wall and then circulated to the unit cooler from the central part of the floor. Dome-type cold storage facility also showed by low wind velocity, below 1 m/s that could minimized cold damage and quality deterioration.

  • Three dimensional numerical study of non-evaporating and evaporating spray characteristics was performed in a quiescent and motoring condition of direct injection diesel engine. The calculation parameter was breakup model. The breakup models used were Reitz & Diwakar model and TAB model. The modified k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model considering the compressibility effect due to the compression and expansion of piston was used. The calculation results of the spray tip penetration and tip velocity using the TAB model showed similar trends comparing with the experimental data. Although the evaporation rate was not nearly affected with the breakup model at the higher injection pressure, in the low injection case, the evaporation rate result using the TAB model became higher than that of R&D model. The evaporation rate was increased with the injection pressure due to the vigorous interaction with the gas field.

  • Recently, four-wheel steering systems have been developed and studied as one of the latest automotive technologies for improving the handling characteristics of a vehicle. In much of the proposed four-wheel steering systems, the side slip angle at the vehicle's center of gravity is maintained at zero. This approach allows the greater maneuverability at low speed by means of counter-phase rear steering and the improved stability at high speed through same-phase rear steering. In this paper, the effects of several four-wheel steering systems are studied and discussed on the responsiveness and stability of the vehicle by using the linear analysis. Especially, the effects of the cornering stiffnesses of both front and rear wheels are investigated on the yaw velocity gain and critical speed of the vehicle.

  • The application of speed or position control technique in AC drives demands accurate position and velocity feedback information. Generally, resolver and absolute encoders are used as a velocity or position sensor. But they increase cost and when the sampling frequency is faster than sensoer's output frequency we can't Set exact information. In order to solve this problem this thesis proposes a speed and a position observer design for Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motors(PMSM) specialty in low speed drives. Most literatures on this topic design the observer based on the field_oriented d_q model. But in this thesis, a new approach to machine dynamics is proposed. Since it is difficult to design the observer using the nonlinear model, the machine model is here linearlized at the operating point. The observer designed is implemented by software using Intel's 8097 microprocessor and verifies the proper performance of observer by simulation and experiment.
