The brown rice drying is effective for energy saving and cost reduction. However, deterioration after drying is one problem, because the skin damage occurs during the drying. So, the measures to preserve the quality has been investigated. One of major quality deteriorations is the oxidation of fat which is contained in the bran layer. So, milling should be carried out to remove the fat as soon as possible after brown rice drying. And the low temperature storage is also worth to be examined for prevention of oxidation. The effect of skin damage on the increase of fat oxidation was clarified. For the grain of skin damage, the increased of fatty acid vaule was remarkable after 70 days elapsed from occurrence of skin damage even in $15\;^{\circ}C$ condition. Therefore it is impossible to keep grain as brown rice form after brown rice drying. For the clean rice and excessively milled rice, the quality can be preserved even in high temperature of $30\;^{\circ}C$. Therefore the brown rice drying can b applied practically using the clean rice technique.
In order to use Pitch pine (Pinus rigida Miller) as the material of the structural glued laminated timber, the effect of the amount of resin exudation due to storage time after the planning and the knot of the lamina were evaluated on the bonding properties of the glued board with resorcinol resin. For Pitch pine that was dried at high temperature ($120{\sim}95^{\circ}C$) and low temperature ($65{\sim}50^{\circ}C$), the flat sawn(tangential section) showed higher amount of resin exudation than the quarter sawn(radial section). And the low temperature drying wood showed higher resin exudation than the high temperature drying wood. The low and high temperature drying wood showed the highest amount of resin exudation on the 3rd day and 7th day, respectively and they were gradually decreased. However, there were no significant differences from 15 to 90 days. Adhesion performances were low until 2~3 days with high exudation of resin, but there were no significant differences after 15 days. Both high temperature and low temperature drying woods satisfied the Korean standard regardless of the storage time. The adhesive strengths of the laminating parts including knots were higher than those of KS criteria, but the wood failures were not satisfied the KS standard. Adhesive performances according to the laminating combinations (quarter sawn + quarter sawn, flat sawn + flat sawn, quarter sawn + flat sawn) were better than those of KS criteria in all laminating combinations in both high temperature and low temperature drying woods.
In an attempt to find ways of improving the quality and sanitary state of dried squid, this study compared artificial drying methods i.e. hot air drying and cold air drying with natural drying method. The drying rates of squid were in the order of hot air, cold air and natural drying. However, cold-air drying was slower than natural drying at $7^{\circ}C$. The drying rates increased with increasing drying temperature. When drying temperature was close to the dew point on a dehumidifier surface, which was the case with cold air drying at $7^{\circ}C$, the driving force for dehumidification was lower than under other drying conditions, which resulted in a lower drying rate. There were little color differences between the drying methods and temperature. Squid dried by cold air-drying had better mechanical texture and sensory qualities than with other drying methods. In addition, the cold air drying method maintained superior quality in terms of the contents of amino acids, taurine, EPA, DHA, other fatty acids and a low TBA value than the other drying methods.
In DPPH radical and nitric oxide scavenging ability, the extract of lowest temperature condition(40-15H ; 15 hours at $40^{\circ}C$ for drying) exhibited highest activity. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents of each extracts were found to be $120.4{\sim}193.3\;mg$/g and $86.91{\sim}94.55\;mg$/g respectively. It is shown that 40-15H was the highest content in each compound. In antimicrobial activity, a lower drying temperature conditions were found to be more strong activities in disc diffusion assay and each extracts showed MIC of identical level against every tested microbial strains. However 100-2H(2 hours at $100^{\circ}C$ for drying) was exhibited MIC of slightly low level against some strains. And every extract showed fine cell viabilities($101.7{\sim}122.9%$) against RAW 264.7 cell. In anti-proliferation activity against AGS, each extract showed a similar inhibition activity. However in anti-proliferation activity against HeLa, a lower drying temperature conditions showed more strong activities.
Silica Aerogels with the density and porosity of 0.1g/cm3 and 96% were synthesized by two different supercri-tical drying processes (i.e additional solvent and intial pressure methods) Isoptopanol was chosen as sol-gel and supercritical drying solvents in order to synthesize aerogels at the lower temperature and pressure because the critical values of isopropanol are lower than those of methanol and ethanol commonly used. The P-V-T relationship of isopropanol was experimentally described for optimizing supercritical drying conditions such as the amount of extra solvent and supercritical drying temperature and pressure. In the addional solvent method monolithic and transparent aerogels were obtained by supercritical drying at 25$0^{\circ}C$ and 900 psing after 40% of the reactor volume was filled with isopropanol. Crack-free aerogels were synthesized at 25$0^{\circ}C$ and 1100~1200 psig by the initial pressure method with an intial nitrogen gas pressure of 400 psig and the isopropanol amount of 5% of the reactor volume.

Post-harvest technology for rice was focused on in-bin drying system, which consists of about 100, 000 facilities in 1980s. The modernized Rice Processing Complex (RPC) and Drying Storage Center (DSC) became popular for rice dry, storage, process and distribution from 1990s. However, the percentage of artificial drying for rice is 48% (2001) and the ability of bulk storage is about 15%. Therefore it is necessary to build enough drying and bulk storage facilities. The definition of high quality rice is to satisfy both good appearance and good taste. The index for good taste in rice is a below 7% of protein, 17-20% of amylose, 15.5-16.5% of moisture contents and high concentration of Mg and K. To obtain a high quality rice, it is absolutely needed to integrate high technologies including breeding program, cropping methods, harvesting time, drying, storing and processing methodologies. Generally, consumers prefer to rice retaining below b value of 5 in colorimetry, and the whiteness, the hardness and the moisture contents of rice are in order of consumer preference in rice quality. By selection of rice cultivars according to acceptable quality, the periods between harvesting time and drying reduced up to about 20 days. Therefore it is necessary to develop a low temperature grain drying system in order to (1) increase the rate of artificial rice drying up to 85%, (2) keep the drying temperature of below 45C, (3) maintain high quality in rice and (4) save energy consumption. Bulk storage facilities with low temperature storage system (7-15C) for rice using grain cooler should be built to reduce labor for handling and transportation and to keep a quality of rice. In the cooled rice, there is no loss of grain quality due to respiration, insect and microorganism, which results in high quality rice containing 16% of moisture contents all year round. In addition, introducing a low temperature milling system reduced the percentage of broken rice to 2% and increased the percentage of head rice to 3% because of proper hardness of grain. It has been noted that the broken rice and cracking reduced significantly by using low pressure milling and wet milling. Our mission for improving rice market competitiveness goes to (1) produce environment friendly, functional rice cultivars, (2) establish a grade standard of rice quality, (3) breed a new cultivar for consumer oriented and (4) extend the period of storage and shelf life of rice during postharvest.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the applicability of high temperature drying to pitch pine (Pinus rigida) lumber, especially intended for use as lamina of structural glued laminated timber (glulam), to enhance the efficient utilization and provide added-value to that species. The high temperature schedule and drying procedures utilized were shown to be reasonable for drying glulam lamina due to the occurrence of small moisture gradients, minimal residual drying stress, and low warpage. Through preliminary tests, it was confirmed that residual resin at lamina surfaces did not adversely affect the gluing process. However, quantitative analysis of resin is required for developing a method to constrain the occurrence of pitch trouble with respect to decreasing long-term adhesive and finish durability of glulam in use after manufacturing. The final moisture content of high temperature dried lamina was much lower than target moisture content and discoloration was more severe than anticipated. In a further study, it will be necessary to determine the optimal drying conditions, such as temperature, humidity, drying time, and top load restraint level, which could best control discoloration, warpage, and moisture content of the lamina, while minimizing fuel expense.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the cocoon reeling condiditions required to technical balance work on the automatic silk reeling machine. The results obtained were as follows. 1) Reasonable reeling velocity with regard to raw silk yield and to reeling efficiency varied according to cocoon reelability. It was observed to be about 150m/min on good reelability cocoon (850m of nonbreaking bave length), about 120m/min on medium reelability cocoon (650m of nonbreaking bave length) and from 90m/min to 120m/min on bad reelability cocoon (500m of nonbreaking bave length) 2) Low temperature drying of cocoon (T$_3$) improved the reelability of cocoon, but increased the reeling accidance with deteriorating the quality of raw silk more than the control(T$_1$) or high temperature drying of cocoon (T$_2$). No significant difference was observed in its raw silk yield and silk by-product with regard to cocoon drying temperature. 3) Incomplete drying of cocoon (T$_3$) improved the reelability of cocoon, but increased the reeling accidance with deteriorating the quality of raw silk more than the control(T$_1$) or over drying of cocoon(T$_2$). No significant difference was observed in its raw silk yield and silk by-product with regard to cocoon drying degree. It was cocoon drying condition of cocoon was the control(T$_1$) or high temperature(T$_2$) rather than low temperature (T$_3$) in cocoon drying process. Control (T$_1$) or over drying of cocoon (T$_2$) was adequate rather than incomplete drying of cocoon (T$_3$) for the improvement of the quality of raw silk on the automatic silk reeling process. 4) It was found that the reasonable cooking condition of cocoon was optimum cooking with 4$0^{\circ}C$ of reeling temperature or incomplete cooking with 45$^{\circ}C$ of the reeling temperature in the automatic silk reeling of the domestic cocoon.
This study was conducted to design and fabricate a heat pump that can produce some weather conditions similar to those of the dry season of the rough rice in Korea, and to investigate basic performances of the apparatus. During the drying test, the amount of energy consumption and drying characteristics were measured at four different temperature levels ranging between 20$^{\circ}C$ and 50${^{\circ}C}$. In the psychrometric chart, the freezing capacity and refrigerant circulation ratio of the heat pump were 173 kJ/kg and 49.6 kg/hr, respectively. Therefore, coefficient of performance was 5.5, which was superior to that of refrigerant R-22 (4.0) in standard refrigeration cycle. In addition, the time to reach target drying temperature (30${^{\circ}C}$) and relative humidity (40%) were 6 minutes and 7 minutes, respectively. Temperature differences between the drying temperature and the rice were 1.5${^{\circ}C}$ and 8.5${^{\circ}C}$ at the drying temperatures of 21.9${^{\circ}C}$ and 48.7${^{\circ}C}$, respectively. This result demonstrated that the increased temperature of the rice in the drying section decreased sufficiently in the tempering section. At the drying temperatures of 21.9, 30.7 38.8, and 48.7${^{\circ}C}$, drying rates were 0.29, 0.61, 0.85, and 1.26%/hr, respectively, which were similar to those of commercial dryer. In addition, the amounts of energy consumption were 325, 667, 692, and 776 kJ/kg, respectively. These results showed that this dryer saved up to 86% of energy consumption compared with the commercial dryer, which uses 4,000-5,000 kJ/kg of fossil fuel.

Purpose: This study was performed to define the drying characteristics of sorghum by developing thin layer drying equations and evaluating various grain drying equations. Thin layer drying equations lay the foundation characteristics to establish the thick layer drying equations, which can be adopted to determine the design conditions for an agricultural dryer. Methods: The drying rate of sorghum was measured under three levels of drying temperature ($40^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$, and $60^{\circ}C$) and relative humidity (30%, 40%, and 50%) to analyze the drying process and investigate the drying conditions. The drying experiment was performed until the weight of sorghum became constant. The experimental constants of four thin layer drying models were determined by developing a non-linear regression model along with the drying experiment results. Result: The half response time (moisture ratio = 0.5) of drying, which is an index of the drying rate, was increased as the drying temperature was high and relative humidity was low. When the drying temperature was $40^{\circ}C$ at a relative humidity (RH) of 50%, the maximum half response time of drying was 2.8 h. Contrastingly, the maximum half response time of drying was 1.2 h when the drying temperature was $60^{\circ}C$ at 30% RH. The coefficient of determination for the Lewis model, simplified diffusion model, Page model, and Thompson model was respectively 0.9976, 0.9977, 0.9340, and 0.9783. The Lewis model and the simplified diffusion model satisfied the drying conditions by showing the average coefficient of determination of the experimental constants and predicted values of the model as 0.9976 and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.0236. Conclusion: The simplified diffusion model was the most suitable for every drying condition of drying temperature and relative humidity, and the model for the thin layer drying is expected to be useful to develop the thick layer drying model.
