We have investigated insulating properties of $SiO_2$ interlayer for the thin film strain gauge, which were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering method in various deposition conditions, such as Ar pressure, gas flow rates and sputtering gases. SEM, AFM and FT-IR techniques were used to analyze its structures and composition. As the Ar pressure and the flow rate increased, the insulating interlayer showed low insulating resistance due to its porous structure and defects. Oxygen deficiency in $SiO_2$ was decreased as fabricated by hydrogen reactive sputtering. We could enhance the surface mobility of sputtered adatoms by using Ar/$H_2$ sputtering gas and obtain a good surface roughness and insulating property. The optimum insulating resistance of 9.22 G$\Omega$ was obtained in Ar/30% $H_2$ mixed gas, flow rate 10sccm, and 1mTorr.

DC magnetron sputtering was used to deposit p-type polycrystalline silicon on n-type Si(100) wafer. The influence of film microstructure properties on deposition parameters (DC power, substrate temperature, pressure) was investigated. The substrate temperature and pressure have the important influence on depositing the poly-Si thin films. Smooth ploy-Si films were obtained in (331) orientation and the average grain sizes are ranged in 25-30nm. The grain sizes of films deposited at low pressure of 10mTorr are a little larger than those deposited at high pressure of 15mTorr.
Titanium oxide films were prepared by RF reactive magnetron sputtering. The effect of sputtering conditions on structural and optical properties was investigated systemically as a function of sputtering pressure(5~20 mTorr) and $O_2/Ar$ flow ratio(0.08~0.4). The results of the X-ray diffraction showed that all films had only the anatase $TiO_2$ phase. At low sputtering pressure and $O_2/Ar$ flow ratio, the films had preferred orientations along [101] and [200] directions. As the sputtering pressure and $O_2/Ar$ flow ratio increased, the intensity of the 101 and 200 diffraction peaks decreased gradually. The microstructure of the sputtered films showed the fine grain size (20nm~50nm) and columnar microcrystals perpendicular to the substrate. With increasing the sputtering pressure and decreasing $O_2/Ar$ flow ratio, the sputtered films showed the more porous columnar structure. XPS analysis showed that stoichiometric $TiO_2$ films were deposited at 7 mTorr sputtering pressure and 0.2 $O_2/Ar$ flow ratio. The results of the X-ray diffraction showed that all films had only the anatase $TiO_2$ phase. Ellipsometeric analysis showed that the refractive index increased from 2.32 to 2.46 as the sputtering pressure decreased. The packing density calculated using the refractive index varied from 0.923 to 0.976, indicating that $TiO_2$films became denser as the sputtering pressure decreased.

Amorphous In-Ga-Zn-O (a-IGZO) thin film transistors, because of their relatively low mobility, have limits in attempts to fulfill high-end specifications for display backplanes. In-Zn-O (IZO) is a promising semiconductor material for high mobility device applications with excellent transparency to visible light region and low temperature process capability. In this paper, the effects of working pressure on the physical and electrical properties of IZO films and thin film transistors are investigated. The working pressure is modulated from 2 mTorr to 5 mTorr, whereas the other process conditions are fixed. As the working pressure increases, the extracted optical band gap of IZO films gradually decreases. Absorption coefficient spectra indicate that subgap states increase at high working pressure. Furthermore, IZO film fabricated at low working pressure shows smoother surface morphology. As a result, IZO thin film transistors with optimum conditions exhibit excellent switching characteristics with high mobility (≥ 30㎠/Vs) and large on/off ratio.
We have studied fabrication of $MgB_2$ thin film on $SrTiO_3$ (001) and r-cut $A1_2$$O_3$ substrates by rf magnetron sputtering method using and $ MgB_2$ single target and two targets of Mg and B, respectively. Based on P -T phase diagram of $MgB_2$ and vapor pressure curves of Mg and B, a three-step process was employed. B layer was deposited at the bottom to enhance the film adhesion to the substrate. Secondly, co-sputtering of Mg and B was done. Finally, Mg was sputtered on top to compensate fur the loss of Mg during annealing. Subsequently, $MgB_2$ films were in-situ annealed in various conditions. The sample fabricated using the three-step process showed $T_{c}$ of 24 K and formation of superconducting $MgB_2$ phase was confirmed by XRD spectra. In case of co-sputtering deposition, $T_{c}$ depended on annealing time and argon pressure. However, those made by single-target sputtering showed non-superconducting behavior or low transition temperature, at best.est.

Modification of film structure and properties in inductively-coupled plasma (ICP) assisted dc and pulsed dc sputtering has been reported by Oya and Kusano [1] and by Sakamoto, Kusano, and Matsuda [2], showing drastic changes in films structure and properties by the ICP assistance in particular to the pulsed dc discharge. Although mechanisms involved in the modification has been reported to be the increase in energy transferred to the substrate, details of effects of low-energy ion bombardment on the modification and origin of an anomalous increase in the ion quantity by the ICP assistance to the pulsed dc discharge have not been discussed. In this presentation, mechanisms involved in film structure and property modification in ICP assisted dc and pulsed dc sputtering, in which a number of low-energy ions are formed, will be discussed based on ion energy distribution as well as effectiveness of energy transfer to the substrate by low energy particles [3]. The results discussed in this presentation will emphasize the fact that the energetic particles playing an important role in the film structure modification are those to be deposited, but not those of inert gas, when their energies range in less than 100 eV in the pressure range of magnetron sputtering.

In this paper we report upon an investigation into the effect of sputter pressure and RF power on the electrical properties of Gallium doped zinc oxide (GZO) film. GZO films were deposited on glass substrate without substrate temperature by RF magnetron sputtering from a ZnO target mixed with 5 wt% $Ga_2O_3$. Argon gas pressure and RF power were in the range of 1~11 mTorr, and 50~100 W, respectively. However, the resistivity of the film was strongly influenced by the sputter pressure and RF power. We were able to achieve as low as $1.5{\times}10^{-3}\;{\Omega}cm$, without substrate temperature.

This research is aimed at developing(110) preferred TiS2 cathode films and glass typed solid electro-lytes which have high ionic migrations and low electron conductivities for thin secondary solid batteries. To obtain preferred oriented TiS2 thin films on a substrate by CVD method using TiCl4 and H2S gases three factors of heating temperature, inner pressure of furnace and TiCl4/H2S gas mole fraction were ex-amined systematically. To obtain solid films of Li2O-B2O3-SiO2 electrolytes by r.f. sputtering for thin proto-type batteries of Li/Li2O-B2O3-SiO2TiS2, sputtering conditions were examined. TiS2 cathode films showed columnar structure, namely c axis oriented parallely. At low pressure of reaction chamber and low heating temperature, surface of smooth TiS2 films couldd be obtained. Ionic conductivity of Li2O-B2O3-SiO2 films manufactured by r.f. magnetron sputtering were 3$\times$10-7$\Omega$-1cm-1 and electron conductivities were 10-11$\Omega$-1cm-1. Open cell voltage of thin lithium batteries were 2.32V with a designed prototype cell.
The transparent electrode properties of ITO films deposited by RF magnetron sputtering with process pressure were investigated. The ITO thin films was deposited on a glass substrate using a target with 3in diameter sintered at a ratio of $In_2O_3$ : $SnO_2$ (9 : 1). 200-nm-thick ITO thin films were manufactured by various process pressures ($2.0{\times}10^{-2}$, $7.0{\times}10^{-3}$ and $2.0{\times}10^{-3}$ Torr). The optical transmittance and resistivity of the deposited ITO thin films showed a relatively satisfactory result under $10^{-2}$ Torr. For high process pressure, the optical transmittance was below 80%, while for low process pressure, the optical transmittance was above 85%. As a result of of mobility, resistivity and carrier concentration by Hall measurement, we obtained satisfactory properties to apply into a transparent conducting thin film.
