  • To address the problems of existing traffic information acquisition systems such as high cost and low scalability, wireless sensor networks (WSN)-based traffic information acquisition systems have been studied. WSN-based systems have many benefits including high scalability and low maintenance cost. Recently, various sensors are studied for traffic surveillance based on WSN, such as magnetic, acoustic, and accelerometer sensors. However, ultrasonic sensor based systems have not been studied. There are many issues for WSN-based systems, such as battery driven operation and low computing power. Thus, power saving methods and specific algorithms with low complexity are necessary. In this paper, we introduce optimal methodologies for power saving of ultrasonic sensors based on the modeling and analysis in detail. Moreover, a new vehicle detection algorithm for low complexity using ultrasonic data is presented. The proposed methodologies are implemented in a tiny microprocessor. The evaluation results show that our algorithm has high detection accuracy.

  • In this paper, we proposed an efficient algorithm using pulse signal based on group-node-contention in LR-WPAN. The purpose of IEEE 802.15.4 is low speed, low cost and low power consumption. Recently, as applications of LR-WPAN have been extended, there is a strong probability of collision as well and almost collision occurs because of hidden node problem. Moreover, if the collision continuously occurs due to hidden node collision, network performance could be decreased. Nowadays, although several papers focus on the hidden node collision, algorithms waste the channel resource if continuous collisions frequently occur. In this paper, we assume that PAN has been already formed groups, and by using pulse signal, coordinator allocates channel and orders, and then, nodes in the allocated group can compete each other. Hence, contention nodes are reduced significantly, channel wastage caused by collision is decreased, and data transmission rate is improving. Finally, this algorithm can protect the network from disruption caused by frequent collisions. Simulation shows that this algorithm can improve the performance.

  • In the existing RF communication based WPAN environment, a lowering of battery span and interference problem among sensors occur because the value of output is set and transmitted steadily when the system on sensor is initialized. Therefore, this paper proposes a framework and a transmit method with low power which decreases the electricity consumption by properly controling transmit power of opponent by received signal strength indicator(RSSI) of each sensor. The system proposes a power-lowering method by controling transmit power properly by the transmit intensity of the connected sensor after being affected by the transmit intensity of surrounded sensor. The framework that is proposed in this paper includes data transmit module, transmit power manager module, transmit power searching module, signal transmit module, and signal receiving module.

  • Recently, the Internet of Things are developing in accordance with the technology of implementation in low-cost, small-size, low power consumption and smart sensor that can communicate using the internet. Especially, key management researches for secure information transmission based on the Internet of Things (IoT) are actively performing. But, Internet of Things(IoT) are uses sensor. Therefore low-power consumption and small-memory are restrictive condition. As a result, managing the key is difficult as a general security measure. However, The problem of secure key management is an essential challenge For the continuous development of the Internet of things. In this paper, we propose a key distribution and management technique in secure Internet of things. In the key generation and management stage, it satisfies the conditions and without physically constrained for IoT based communication.

  • Recently many short-range transceiver systems, such as ZigBee, Bluetooth and RFID(Radio Frequency Identification), have been developed. These systems are mostly low-power transceivers. In the near future many more low-power transceivers are appeared for WPAN(Wireless Personal Area Network) and interference mitigation technologies are necessary to the low-power transceivers for using frequency resources efficiently. In this paper we consider two methods for sharing frequency resources. The first case is that a frequency band previously assigned fer a certain system is shared and the second case is that the white frequency band is shared. We study the method and conditions for sharing frequency resources in the above two cases. When a frequency band is shared with ZigBee, RFID, DCP (Digital Cordless Phone) and Bluetooth as an example for the first case, the sharing conditions are investigated and the results are presented. We propose a balancing factor to maintain an equal transmitting conditions between systems having a different interference mitigation technique. In the interference simulation we use FH(Frequency Hopping) as a reference system and 0.9 of a balancing factor for LBT(Listen Before Talk) and 0.8 for DS(Direct Spreading). From the simulation results we know that a balancing factor reduces interference probability therefore many more systems can be operated in the same frequency bands compared with the case without using a balancing factor.

  • By placing distributed generation power sources beside a big nonlinear load, these sources can be used as a power quality enhancer, while injecting some active power to the network. In this paper, a new scheme to use the distributed generation power source in both operation modes is presented. In this scheme, a fuzzy controller is added to adjust the optimal set point of inverter between compensating mode and maximum active power injection mode, which works based on the harmonic content of the nonlinear load. As the high order current harmonics can be easily rejected using passive filters, the DG is used to compensate the low order harmonics of the load current. Multilevel transformerless cascade inverters are preferred in such utilization, as they have more flexibility in current/voltage waveform. The proposed scheme is simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK to evaluate the circuit performance. Then, a 1kw single phase prototype of the circuit is used for experimental evaluation of the paper. Both simulative and experimental results prove that such a circuit can inject a well-controlled current with desired harmonics and THD, while having a smaller switching frequency and better efficiency, related to previous 3-phase inverter schemes in the literature.

  • New concepts and ideas often result from extensive recombination of existing concepts or ideas. Both researchers and developers build on existing concepts and ideas in published papers or registered patents to develop new theories and technologies that in turn serve as a basis for further development. As the importance of patent increases, so does that of patent analysis. Patent analysis is largely divided into network-based and keyword-based analyses. The former lacks its ability to analyze information technology in details while the letter is unable to identify the relationship between such technologies. In order to overcome the limitations of network-based and keyword-based analyses, this study, which blends those two methods, suggests the keyword network based analysis methodology. In this study, we collected significant technology information in each patent that is related to Light Emitting Diode (LED) through text mining, built a keyword network, and then executed a community network analysis on the collected data. The results of analysis are as the following. First, the patent keyword network indicated very low density and exceptionally high clustering coefficient. Technically, density is obtained by dividing the number of ties in a network by the number of all possible ties. The value ranges between 0 and 1, with higher values indicating denser networks and lower values indicating sparser networks. In real-world networks, the density varies depending on the size of a network; increasing the size of a network generally leads to a decrease in the density. The clustering coefficient is a network-level measure that illustrates the tendency of nodes to cluster in densely interconnected modules. This measure is to show the small-world property in which a network can be highly clustered even though it has a small average distance between nodes in spite of the large number of nodes. Therefore, high density in patent keyword network means that nodes in the patent keyword network are connected sporadically, and high clustering coefficient shows that nodes in the network are closely connected one another. Second, the cumulative degree distribution of the patent keyword network, as any other knowledge network like citation network or collaboration network, followed a clear power-law distribution. A well-known mechanism of this pattern is the preferential attachment mechanism, whereby a node with more links is likely to attain further new links in the evolution of the corresponding network. Unlike general normal distributions, the power-law distribution does not have a representative scale. This means that one cannot pick a representative or an average because there is always a considerable probability of finding much larger values. Networks with power-law distributions are therefore often referred to as scale-free networks. The presence of heavy-tailed scale-free distribution represents the fundamental signature of an emergent collective behavior of the actors who contribute to forming the network. In our context, the more frequently a patent keyword is used, the more often it is selected by researchers and is associated with other keywords or concepts to constitute and convey new patents or technologies. The evidence of power-law distribution implies that the preferential attachment mechanism suggests the origin of heavy-tailed distributions in a wide range of growing patent keyword network. Third, we found that among keywords that flew into a particular field, the vast majority of keywords with new links join existing keywords in the associated community in forming the concept of a new patent. This finding resulted in the same outcomes for both the short-term period (4-year) and long-term period (10-year) analyses. Furthermore, using the keyword combination information that was derived from the methodology suggested by our study enables one to forecast which concepts combine to form a new patent dimension and refer to those concepts when developing a new patent.

  • The energy consumed by buildings among the total national energy consumption is more than 10% of the total. For this reason, Korea has adopted the zero energy building policy since 2025, and research on the energy saving technology of buildings has been demanded. Analysis of buildings' energy consumption patterns shows that lighting, heating and cooling energy account for more than 60% of total energy consumption, which is directly related to solar power acquisition and window opening and closing operation. In this paper, we have developed a low - power IoT sensor module for window system to transfer acquired information to building energy management system. This module transmits the external environment and window opening / closing status information to the building energy management system in real time, and constructs the network to actively take energy saving measures. The power used in the module is designed as an independent power source using solar power among the harvest energy. The topology of the power supply is a Buck converter, which is charged at 4V to the lithium ion battery through MPPT control, and the efficiency is about 85.87%. Communication is configured to be able to transmit in real time by applying WiFi. In order to reduce the power consumption of the module, we analyzed the hardware and software aspects and implemented a low power IoT sensor module.

  • IEEE 802.3az LPI mechanism allows an Ethernet link to reduce power consumption by entering a low-power sleeping mode and letting some components being powered off when there is no data to be transmitted through the link. However, if small amount of packets are being sent periodically, such a mechanism can not obtain energy efficiency due to a high overhead caused by excessive mode transitions. In this paper, we propose an enhanced LPI mechanism which can perform state transition adaptively based on the traffic characteristics on transport layer and network status. This simulation result shows that proposed mechanism improves energy efficiency than LPI mechanism with respect to energy consumption rate for various traffic loads.

  • Transformers are one of the most precious elements of the electric power system. Stability and reliability of the electric power network mainly depend on the working of the transformer. Leakage reactance of the transformer is one of the important factors and accurate calculation of the leakage reactance is necessary for the transformer designers and electric distributors. Leakage reactance of the transformer depends on the geometry of the transformer. There are many different methods for the calculations of the leakage reactance however mostly are usable when the axial heights of the high voltage and low voltage windings are equal. When the axial heights of high voltage and low voltage windings are asymmetric most of the analytical methods are not reliable. In this study, a new analytical method is introduced for the calculation of the leakage reactance. Fourteen different transformers are investigated in this study and four of them are presented in this paper. The results of the new analytical method are compared with the experimental results. Other analytical and numerical methods are also compared with this new method. Results show that this method is more reliable and accurate as compared to the other analytical methods. The maximum relative error between short-circuit test and proposed method for these fourteen transformers was less than 2.8%.
