두경부암의 근접방사선 치료 (Brachytherapy for Head and Neck Cancer)

  • Brachytherapy is a method of radiotherapy in advantage to achieve better local control with minimum radiation toxicity in comparison with external irradiation because radiation dose is distributed according to the inverse square low of gamma-ray emitted from the implanted sources. The main characteristics of brachytherapy are delivering of higher dose to target volume shortening of total treatment period and sparing of normal tissue. Recent development of iridium ribbons for low dose rate implant provides improvement of technology of brachytherapy in terms of safety and efficiency. High dose rate method. on the other hand, is effective to avoid unnecessary expoure of medical personnel.

DIFFERENTIAL EXPRESSION OF RADIATION RESPONSE GENES IN SPLEEN, LUNG, AND LIVER OF RATS FOLLOWING ACUTE OR CHRONIC RADIATION EXPOSURE

  • We analyzed the differential effects of histopathology, apoptosis and expression of radiation response genes after chronic low dose rate (LDR) and acute high dose rate (HDR) radiation exposure in spleen, lung and liver of rats. Female 6-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats were used. For chronic low-dose whole body irradiation, rats were maintained for 14 days in a $^{60}Co$ gamma ray irradiated room and received a cumulative dose of 2 Gy or 5 Gy. Rats in the acute whole body exposure group were exposed to an equal dose of radiation delivered as a single pulse ($^{137}Cs$-gamma). At 24 hours after exposure, spleen, lung and liver tissues were extracted for histopathologic examination, western blotting and RT-PCR analysis. 1. The spleen showed the most dramatic differential response to acute and chronic exposure, with the induction of substantial tissue damage by HDR but not by LDR radiation. Effects of LDR radiation on the lung were only apparent at the higher dose (5 Gy), but not at lower dose (2 Gy). In the liver, HDR and LDR exposure induced a similar damage response at both doses. RT-PCR analysis identified cyclin G1 as a LDR-responsive gene in the spleen of rats exposed to 2 Gy and 5 Gy gamma radiation and in the lung of animals irradiated with 5 Gy. 2. The effects of LDR radiation differed among lung, liver, and spleen tissues. The spleen showed the greatest differential effect between HDR and LDR. The response to LDR radiation may involve expression of cyclin G1.

저선량 ${\gamma}$선 조사가 배추종자의 발아와 수량에 미치는 효과 (Effects of low dose gamma radiation on the germination and yield components of chinese cabbage)

  • 저선량 방사선에 의한 식물생육 촉진효과를 보고자 남방계 배추품종의 $1{\sim}5$년간 묵은 종자에 저선량 ${\gamma}$선을 $0.5{\sim}30.0Gy$까지 조사하여 온실과 포장에서 재배하여 그 생육상황을 조사한 결과는 다음과 같다. 배추 묵은 종자의 발아율과 유묘초장은 저선량 조사에 의해 향상되었으나 그 효과는 저장기간에 따라 달랐다. 저장기간이 5년차, 4년차, 3년차인 종자에게는 각각 4.0Gy, 1.0Gy, 0.5Gy 조사에서 발아율과 유묘초장 증가효과가 인정되었고 1년차와 2년차 종자에서 발아율 촉진효과는 없었으나 유묘초장은 증가하였다. 포장재배한 배추의 초장, 생체중, 직경으로 본 수량은 모든 저장종자의 4.0Gy와 8.0Gy 조사구에서 증가효과가 있었고 1년차와 2년차 종자에서는 20.0Gy와 30.0Gy에서도 수량증가 효과가 있었다.

실험적 간 발암모델에서 감마선 조사 쇠고기 섭취가 전암성병변의 생성, 약물대사 효소계 및 소포체 막 안정성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of $\gamma$-Irradiated Beef Feeding on Preneoplastic Hepatic Lesion, Cytochrome P450 System and Microsome Glucose 6-Phosphatase Activity in Rat Hepatocarcinogenesis)

  • This study was done to investigate effects of ${\gamma}$ irradiated beef feeding on the formation of gluta thione S transferase placental form positive(GST P+) foci, lipid peroxidation, cytochrome P450 system and microsomal glucose 6 phosphate activity in diethylnitrosamine(DEN) initiated rat hepatocarci nogenesis. Weaning Sprague Dawley male rats were fed the diet containing ${\gamma}$ irradiatied ground beef at the dose of 0, 3, 5kGy as a 20% of protein source for 8 weeks. One week after feeding, rats were intraperitoneally injected twice with a dose of DEN(50mg/kg BW). As a promoter, 0.05% phenobarbital was fed in drinking water from one week after DEN treatment until the end of experiment. At the end of 8th week, rats were sacrificed and hepatic GST P+ foci, microsomal malondialdehyde(MDA) and conjugated diene contents were determined. In addition, cytochrome P450 content and the activities of NADPH cytochrome P450 reductase and glucose 6 phosphatase were also measured. There was no significant effect by gamma irradiation on microsomal MDA content, conjugated diene, cytochrome P450 content and activities of NADPH cytochrome P450 reductase and glucose 6 phosphatase. However with DEN treatment, microsomal MDA content and conjugated diene contents were significantly changed. Cytochrome P450 content was also significantly increased while microsomal glucose 6 phophatase activity was significantly decreased with DEN treatment. However activity of NADPH cytochrome P450 reductase was not affected. An interesting finding in this study was that the number and area of hepatic GST P+ foci of the rats fed gamma irradiated beef were significantly(p<0.05) lower than those of the control. Such a lowering effect on GST P+ foci formation was highest at the dose of 3kGy than others. Overall results suggest that the consumption of low dose of gamma irradiated beef does not affect the formation of lipid peroxide, cytochrome P450 system and membrane stability.

  • We performed this study to determine the effect of Panax ginseng and its fractions on jejunal crypt survival, endogenous spleen colony formation, and apoptosis in jejunal crypt cells of mice irradiated with high and low dose of $\gamma$-irradiation. The radioprotective effect of ginseng was compared with the effect of diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC). Ginseng administration before irradiation protected the jejunal crypts (p<0.005), increased the formation of endogenous spleen colony (p<0.005) and reduced the frequency of radiation-induced apoptosis (p<0.005). Quality characterization of gamma-irradiated fresh oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) during low temperature storage

  • Fresh oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) were gamma-irradiated at 0, 1, 2, and 3 kGy. The effects on various quality attributes were determined during storage at $5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Color changes were more prominent in the cap region than the stem part. At the start of storage increase of Hunter's L-value (lightness) was observed in the caps of 2 and 3 kGy-irradiated samples. The L-value was higher in the all irradiated samples during storage. The trend was different in the case of stem region, where L-value decreased upon irradiation, but remained high throughout storage. The ${\alpha}$-value declined, whereas the b-value increased following irradiation. Irradiation showed a dose-dependent effect on the firmness, which was clearer during storage, but the samples irradiated at 1 kGy maintained an overall better texture than other irradiated samples. The weight loss was also higher in the all irradiated samples during storage. The samples irradiated at 1 kGy showed good physical appearance without any fungal attack at the end of storage; however color change in cap region was quite apparent. The ultra-structural drastic effect of irradiation was understandable using scanning electron microscopy. E-nose analysis demonstrated a clear change in the volatile profiles of all irradiated samples. Although the effect of irradiation on quality characteristics was quite clear but the all irradiated samples were free from fungal attack that was observed in the case of control sample.

몬테카를로 시뮬레이션을 이용한 복숭아의 방사선 조사 (Monte Carlo Simulation of Irradiation Treatment of Peaches (Prunus persica L. Batsch))

  • Food irradiation is important not only in ensuring safety but also improving antioxidant activity of peaches. Our objective was to establish the best irradiation treatment for peaches by calculating dose distribution using Monte Carlo simulation. 3-D geometry and component densities of peaches, extracted from CT scan, were entered into MCNP to obtain simulated dose distribution. Radiation energies for electron beam were 1.35 MeV (low energy) and 10 MeV (high energy). Co (1.25 MeV) and the Husman irradiator, containing three sealed Cs source rods in an annular array, were used for gamma irradiation. At 1.35 MeV electron beam simulation, electrons penetrated well beyond the peach skin, enough for surface treatment for microorganisms and allergens. At 10 MeV electron beam simulation, for top-beam only treatment, doses at the core were the highest and for double beam treatment, the electron energy was absorbed by the entire sample. At Co source, the radiation doses were presented on the whole area. At Cs source, the dose uniformity ratios were 2.78 for one source and 1.48 for three ones at 120 degrees interval. Proper control of irradiation treatment is critical to establish confidence in the irradiation process.

Radioresistance of Acorus calamus to Gamma Ray Irradiation

  • 창포는 한국에 자생하는 수생식물로 약용뿐만 아니라 phytoremediation과 수질정화 식물로도 알려져 있다. 본 연구에서는 창포의 기내 식물체에 다양한 선량(20-500 Gy)의 감마선을 조사하여, 방사선의 효과 및 감수성을 확인하기 위해 2달후 생존율, 신초형성율 및 생장율을 측정하였다. 생존율과 신초형성율은 감마선 선량이 증가할수록 현저하게 감소하였다. 기내에서 저선량을 조사한 식물체의 생장율은 대조구에 비해 오히려 증가하였으나, 250 Gy 이상에서는 생장이 멈추거나 유의하게 감소하였으며, 반치사선량($LD_{50}$)은 240 Gy로 다른 식물종의 $LD_{50}$보다 훨씬 높은 선량이었다. 창포에서 저선량을 조사하였을 때 생장율이 증가하는 방사선호메시스(radiation hormesis) 효과를 확인하였다.

발아식품의 품질보존을 위한 전리방사선의 이용 (Utilization of Ionizing Radiation on the Preservation of Sprouting Foods)

  • 저장상 많은 문제점을 내포하고 있는 감자, 양파, 마늘 및 밤의 장기 저장법 개발을 목적으로 수확후 l개월 이내에 Co-60 감마선을 조사하고 냉동기를 가동하지 않은 자연저온 저장고에 각각 저장하였다. 저장중 시료의 발아는 감자가 150Gy, 양파 및 마늘이 50Gy 밤이 250 Gy의 선량으로 8~10개월간 거의 완전히 억제되었다. 감마선 조사에 따라 부패율은 상당히 감소되었으며, 중량감소에 있어서도 적정선량의 조사는 네가지 사료에서 6~24%의 감소 억제 효과를 나타내었다. 발아식품의 품질에 관여하는 성분인 수분, 당 및 비타민 C의 함량은 저장기간의 경과로 비조사구에 비해 조사구가 우수한 경향을 보였다. 따라서 이들 식품의 장기 안전저장을 위해서는 감자, 양파 및 마늘은 50~150 Gy, 밤은 250 Gy 정도의 감마선을 조사하고 자연저온저장고($10{\pm}5^{\circ}C$ R.H. 75~85%)에저장하는 것이 효과적인 방법임을 시사하였다.

감마선 선량계를 개발하기 위한 상용 PIN 포토 다이오드의 응용 (Application of Commercial PIN Photodiodes to develope Gamma-Ray Dosimeters)

  • 본 논문은 감마선 방사선 선량을 측정하기 위하여 상용 반도체를 응용하기 위한 실험적 연구에 대하여 다루었다. 실리콘 포토 다이오드는 값이 싸고 작으며 높은 효율과 견고하여 광검출기로 잘 이용되기 때문에 감마선과 같은 방사선 측정에 효과적으로 이용될 수 있다. 대부분의 PN 포토 다이오드는 이 증가함에 따라 역 방향 전류의 증가하는 특성을 가지고 있다. 그러므로 이 소자들의 공핍층이 역 방향 전류에 영향을 주므로 이 공핍층의 면적이 큰 PIN 포토 다이오드를 선택하였다. 이 연구에서는 방사선량을 검출하고 감마선 선량계를 개발하는데 적용하기 위하여, PIN 다이오드에 대해 몇 가지 실험이 수행되었다. NEC사의 PH 302와 SIEMENS사의 BPW 34와 같은 2가지 종류의 포토 다이오드를 반도체 분석장치를 사용하여 $\gamma$선 방사선원인 Co-60의 저준위 시설에서 시험하였다. 그 결과, 방사선 선량률과 다이오드의 전류 사이에 양호한 선형적 함수 관계가 나타나는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서, 이들 실리콘 PIN 포토 다이오드들은 $\gamma$선 선량계를 설계하는데 적합하게 이용될 수 있을 것이다.
