Properties of Repair Cement Mortar with C12A7-based Alumina Cement and Nitrite for Low Temperature Curing (C12A7계 알루미나시멘트 및 아질산염을 사용한 저온환경 보수시공용 시멘트 모르타르의 특성)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the basic performance of cement mortar for repair using alumina cement and nitrite can be cured in low temperature environment. For this purpose, the repair mortar used in the domestic construction site was selected and the experimental evaluation was carried out by adjusting the mixing amount by substituting alumina cement and nitrite for the blending ratio. The experimental test results confirmed that alumina cement and nitrite were replaced with the repair mortar, the initial strength was improved. Also, the chemical resistance was improved, the shrinkage behavior was decreased, and the resistance to freezing and thawing was increased. As a result, applying alumina cement and nitrite at a ratio of 2:1 at 7.5%, the surface condition was maintained for 5 months or longer and it was judged to be excellent in practical use for external structures.

  • This study is to analyze the difference by comparing the physical properties of general Portland cement (OPC) and low-heat Portland cement (LHC) in the market to develop low-heat cement manufacturing technology that can minimize the amount of limestone by using non-carbonate circulating resources as raw materials. To this end, the mortar is being reviewed by evaluating the properties of the mortar, such as slump, strength, durability, and thermal insulation properties, with a difference in the mixing ratio.

  • In order to examine the possibility of practical at low-temperature environment curable cement mortar with chloride and nitrite as cold resistance admixture for rebar corrosion prevention. As a result, chloride was used using nitrite complex in low temperature environment and corrosion performance of rebar was improved and mortar strength was promoted. The ratio of nitrite than chloride applied more than twice, corrosion of the reinforcing bars will not occur even in low temperature environment, cement hydration reaction will be promoted and mortar will prevent freezing damage.

Mathematical model of strength and porosity of ternary blend Portland rice husk ash and fly ash cement mortar

  • This paper presents a mathematical model for strength and porosity of mortars made with ternary blends of ordinary Portland cement (OPC), ground rice husk ash (RHA) and classified fly ash (FA). The mortar mixtures were made with Portland cement Type I containing 0-40% FA and RHA. FA and RHA with 1-3% by weight retained on a sieve No. 325 were used. Compressive strength and porosity of the blended cement mortar at the age of 7, 28 and 90 days were determined. The use of ternary blended cements of RHA and FA produced mixes with good strength and low porosity of mortar. A mathematical analysis and two-parameter polynomial model were presented for the strength and porosity estimation with FA and RHA contents as parameters. The computer graphics of strength and porosity of the ternary blend were also constructed to aid the understanding and the proportioning of the blended system.

  • This study evaluated the compressive strength after making mortar with low cement composition for carbon-neutral steam curing to respond to climate change. Blast furnace slag, fly ash, and ultra-high powder fly ash were used as substitutes for cement. The cement substitute was used at 40% of the mass of cement, and after steam curing, the compressive strength was measured on the 1st, 3rd, 7th and 28th days of age. As a result of the experiment, at the age of 1 day, the mixture using only cement showed the highest strength, but from the 3rd day, the specimen using ultra-high powder showed a high strength development rate, followed by blast furnace slag and fly ash.

  • Recently, the disposal of used vehicle tires is a big social problem because the amount of used vehicle tires has been increased with development of' automobile industry. Many researches have been made on the recycling of used vehicle tires in the various fields of industry as well as construction industry. When the crumb rubber made of vehicle tires is mixed in cement concrete and mortar, it is indicated that the adhesive strength of interface between the crumb rubber and cement hydrates is very low. The purpose of this study is to improve the fundamental properties by increasing of the adhesion strength of styrene-butadiene rubber(SF3R) latex coated crumb rubber in ; cement mortar. SBR-modified mortar using crumb rubber is also tested as the same method. From the test results, the cement mortar using SBR latex coated crumb rubber have a good fundamental properties compared with that using uncoated crumb rubber. The mechanical properties of SBR-modified mortar using crumb rubber with polymer-cement ratios of 10% are also improved.

Influence of palm oil fuel ash on behaviour of green high-performance fine-grained cement mortar

  • In the recent years, the use of agricultural waste in green cement mortar and concrete production has attracted considerable attention because of potential saving in the large areas of landfills and potential enhancement on the performance of mortar. In this research, microparticles of palm oil fuel ash (POFA) obtained from a multistage thermal and mechanical treatment processes of raw POFA originating from palm oil mill was utilized as a pozzolanic material to produce high-performance cement mortar (HPCM). POFA was used as a partial replacement material to ordinary Portland cement (OPC) at replacement levels of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40% by volume. Sand with particle size smaller than 300 ㎛ was used to enhance the performance of the HPCM. The HPCM mixes were tested for workability, compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), porosity and absorption. The results portray that the incorporation of micro POFA in HPCMs led to a slight reduction in the compressive strength. At 40% replacement level, the compressive strength was 87.4 MPa at 28 days which is suitable for many high strength applications. Although adding POFA to the cement mixtures harmed the absorption and porosity, those properties were very low at 3.4% and 11.5% respectively at a 40% POFA replacement ratio and after 28 days of curing. The HPCM mixtures containing POFA exhibited greater increase in strength and UPV as well as greater reduction in absorption and porosity than the control OPC mortar from 7 to 28 days of curing age, as a result of the pozzolanic reaction of POFA. Micro POFA with finely graded sand resulted in a dense and high strength cement mortar due to the pozzolanic reaction and increased packing effect. Therefore, it is demonstrated that the POFA could be used with high replacement ratios as a pozzolanic material to produce HPCM.

  • Older brick masonry structures generally suffer from low strength defects. Using a cement mortar layer (CML) or steel-meshed cement mortar layer (S-CML) to reinforce existing low-strength brick masonry structures (LBMs) is still an effective means of increasing seismic performance. However, performance indices such as lateral displacement ratios and skeleton curves for LBMs reinforced with CML or S-CML need to be clarified in performance-based seismic design and evaluation. Therefore, research into the failure mechanisms and seismic performance of LBMs reinforced with CML or S-CML is imperative. In this study, thirty low-strength brick walls (LBWs) with different cross-sectional areas, bonding mortar types, vertical loads, and CML/S-CML thicknesses were constructed. The failure modes, load-carrying capacities, energy dissipation capacity and lateral drift ratio limits in different limits states were acquired via quasi-static tests. The results show that 1) the primary failure modes of UBWs and RBWs are "diagonal shear failure" and "sliding failure through joints." 2) The acceptable drift ratios of Immediate Occupancy (IO), Life Safety (LS), and Collapse Prevention (CP) for UBWs can be 0.04%, 0.08%, and 0.3%, respectively. For 20-RBWs, the acceptable drift ratios of IO, LS, and CP for 20-RBWs can be 0.037%, 0.09%, and 0.41%, respectively. Moreover, the acceptable drift ratios of IO, LS, and CP for 40-RBWs can be 0.048%, 0.09%, and 0.53%, respectively. 3) Reinforcing low-strength brick walls with CML/S-CML can improve brick walls' bearing capacity, deformation, and energy dissipation capacity. Using CML/S-CML reinforcement to improve the seismic performance of old masonry houses is a feasible and practical choice.

Physical and mechanical properties of cement mortar with LLDPE powder and PET fiber wastes

  • Polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) from bottle waste and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) from barrels and tanks waste are widely available and need to be recycled. Recycling them in concrete and mortar is an alternative solution for their disposal. In this study various quantities of sand (5%, 10%, 15% and 20%) were substituted by powder from LLDPE waste. In addition, PET waste fibers (corrugated, straight) were added to the mortar with different percentages (0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2%) of cement mass. This paper evaluate the mechanical and physical properties of the composites in fresh (workability, air content and density) and hardened state (compressive and flexural strength, water absorption and total shrinkage). From the experimental results, it can be concluded that the strengthening in tensile of the mortar with plastic waste corrugated fibers is improved. Other important results are that the water absorption and the density rate are less than that of the ordinary mortar.

Engineering Properties of Low Cement Mortar with type and Various Incorporating Ratios of Setting Accelerator (응결촉진제 종류 및 치환율 변화에 따른 저시멘트 모르타르의 공학적 특성)

  • In this research it was attempted to analyze the general engineering properties of low cement mortar according to the type of setting accelerator and substitution rate, when 1% substitution rate for setting accelerator was used a high rate of compressive strength manifestation was shown and that the WS-10 type setting accelerator was appropriate. For the rate of change of length, when 3% substitution rate for setting accelerator was used, it was shown that due to initial expansion the shrinkage compensation was not significant, and when taking into consideration strength and shrinkage, 1% of WS-10 was shown to be appropriate.
