In case of newly constructed buildings, the construction type is almost Curtain-wall system or large window in building skin. However, these kind of buildings have problems with regulations on building energy efficiency. And national regulations on building energy efficiency limit only the V-factor of window(except infiltration), it is hard to predict energy consumption of Curtain-wall buildings which gain large solar energy in summer. In this study, the influence of LSG(Light to Solar Gain) on energy performance was theoretically analyzed with simulation. LSG is the value of VLT divide SHGC and represents the optical performance of the glass or glazing. The Window & Therm program developed in LBNL was used to analyze window systems and EnergyPlus was used to building energy. Cases of glazing are three types; single coated Low-e clear glazing, tripple coated Low-e clear glazing, tripple coated Low-e tinted glazing. The results of this study are follows; 1) The building energy consumption of Alt-l, 2, 3 were about 300, 253, $259kWh/m^2{\cdot}yr$ respectively. Therefore, improvement of LSG could save the energy up to 16%. 2) The saved energy could be converted 1 billion won as annual benefit of total energy costs 3) SHGC and LSG more influence on cooling energy than heating energy in office buildings.
Energy performance of building envelope components, including external walls, floors, roofs, windows and doors, is crutial for determining how much energy is required for heating and cooling in a building. Among various building technologies, a green roof system can be a good option for reducing heat gain and loss in new buildings as well as existing buildings for green remodeling. This paper evaluates the performance of green roof systems according to soil depth and Leaf Area Index (LAI) for existing buildings. It also attempts to quantify the energy saving effects on new and existing buildings with different insulation levels. Thermal performance of green roofs is mainly dependent on soil thickness and LAI. Installation of green roofs in deteriorated existing buildings can lead to improvements in roof insulation, due to the soil layer. An increase in soil depth leads to a decrease in heating load, regardless of conditions of vegetation on the green roof. Larger LAI values may reduce cooling loads in the cooling season. Installation of green roof in deteriorated existing buildings showed bigger energy saving effect in comparison to a case in new buildings. A simulation study showed that the installation of green roof systems in deteriorated existing buildings with low insulation levels, due to low thermal performance requirements when constructed, could improve the energy performance of the buildings similar or better to the peformance on new buildings with the most updated insulation standard. Thus, when remodeling a deteriorated building, green roofs could be a good option to meet the most recent energy requirements.

A numerical investigation regarding local (${\mu}_L$) and story (${\mu}_S$) ductility demand evaluation of steel buildings with perimeter moment resisting frames (PMRF) and interior gravity frames (IGF), is conducted in this study. The interior connections are modeled, firstly as perfectly pinned (PP), and then as semi-rigid (SR). Three models used in the SAC steel project, representing steel buildings of low-, mid-, and high-rise, are considered. The story ductility reduction factor ($R_{{\mu}S}$) as well as the ratio ($Q_{GL}$) of $R_{{\mu}S}$ to ${\mu}_L$ are calculated. ${\mu}_L$ and ${\mu}_S$, and consequently structural damage, at the PMRF are significant reduced when the usually neglected effect of SR connections is considered; average reductions larger than 40% are observed implying that the behavior of the models with SR connections is superior and that the ductility detailing of the PMRF doesn't need to be so stringent when SR connections are considered. $R_{{\mu}S}$ is approximately constant through height for low-rise buildings, but for the others it tends to increase with the story number contradicting the same proportion reduction assumed in the Equivalent Static Lateral Method (ESLM). It is implicitly assumed in IBC Code that the overall ductility reduction factor for ductile moment resisting frames is about 4; the results of this study show that this value is non-conservative for low-rise buildings but conservative for mid- and high-rise buildings implying that the ESLM fails evaluating the inelastic interstory demands. If local ductility capacity is stated as the basis for design, a value of 0.4 for $Q_{GL}$ seems to be reasonable for low- and medium-rise buildings.
This paper presents recent research on the experimental evaluation of wind loads on low buildings and the recommendations provided in the form of traditional codification. These mainly include the wind loads on buildings with geometries different from those examined in previous studies. This is followed by the evaluation of simulated wind loads on low building roofs. The overall application of a recently proposed simulation methodology for codification purposes is discussed in detail. The traditional codification provides for a group of roof geometries a single peak design pressure coefficient for each roof zone considering a nominal worst-case scenario; this may often lead to uneconomical loads. Alternatively, the presented methodology is capable of providing peak pressure coefficients corresponding to specific roof geometries and according to risk levels; this can generate risk consistent and more economical design wind loads for specific roof configurations taking into account, for instance, directional design conditions and upstream roughnesses.
Rayleigh damping model is recommended in the recently developed Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering (PBEE) methodology, but this methodology does not provide sufficient information due to the complexity of the damping mechanism. Furthermore, each Rayleigh-type damping model may have its individual limitations. In this study, Rayleigh-type damping models that are used widely in engineering practice are discussed. The seismic performance of a large-span single-layer latticed dome subjected to earthquake ground motions is investigated using different Rayleigh damping models. Herein a simulation technique is developed considering low cycle fatigue (LCF) in steel material. In the simulation technique, Ramberg-Osgood steel material model with the low cycle fatigue effect is used to simulate the non-uniformly distributed material damping and low cycle fatigue damage in the structure. Subsequently, the damping forces of the structure generated by different damping models are compared and discussed; the effects of the damping ratio and roof load on the damping forces are evaluated. Finally, the low cycle fatigue damage values in sections of members are given using these damping models. Through a comparative analysis, an appropriate Rayleigh-type damping model used for a large span single-layer latticed dome subjected to earthquake ground motions is determined in terms of the existing damping models.

Low-cost techniques with seismic isolation performance and excellent resilience need to be explored in the case of rural low-rise buildings because of the limited buying power of rural residents. As an inexpensive and eco-friendly isolation bearing, scrap tire pads (STPs) have the issue of poor resilience. Thus, a seismic isolation system under a column (SISC) integrated with STP needs to be designed for the seismic protection of low-rise rural buildings. The SISC, which is based on a simple exterior design, maintains excellent seismic performance, while the mechanical behavior of the internal STP provides elastic resilience. The horizontal behaviors of the SISC are studied through load tests, and its mechanical properties and the intrinsic mechanism of the reset ability are discussed. Results indicate that the average residual displacement ratio was 24.59%, and the reset capability was enhanced. Comparative experimental and finite element analysis results also show that the load-displacement relationship of the SISC was essentially consistent. The dynamic characteristics of isolated and fixed-base buildings were compared by numerical assessment of the response control effects, and the SISC was found to have great seismic isolation performance. SISC can be used as a low-cost base isolation device for rural buildings in developing countries.
One of the most important issues in structural systems is evaluation of the margin of safety in low and mid-rise buildings against the progressive collapse mechanism due to the earthquake loads. In this paper, modeling of collapse propagation in structural elements of RC frame buildings is evaluated by tracing down the collapse points in beam and column structural elements, one after another, under earthquake loads and the influence of column removal is investigated on how the collapse expansion in beam and column structural members. For this reason, progressive collapse phenomenon is studied in 3-story and 5-story intermediate moment resisting frame buildings due to the corner and edge column removal in presence of the earthquake loads. In this way, distribution and propagation of the collapse in progressive collapse mechanism is studied, from the first element of the structure to the collapse of a large part of the building with investigating and comparing the results of nonlinear time history analyses (NLTHA) in presence of two-component accelograms proposed by FEMA_P695. Evaluation of the results, including the statistical survey of the number and sequence of the collapsed points in process of the collapse distribution in structural system, show that the progressive collapse distribution are special and similar in low-rise and mid-rise RC buildings due to the simultaneous effects of the column removal and the earthquake loads and various patterns of the progressive collapse distribution are proposed and presented to predict the collapse propagation in structural elements of similar buildings. So, the results of collapse distribution patterns and comparing the values of collapse can be utilized to provide practical methods in codes and guidelines to enhance the structural resistance against the progressive collapse mechanism and eventually, the value of damage can be controlled and minimized in similar buildings.

The authors proposed a new rapid-screening method for more reasonably evaluating seismic capacities of medium and low-rise RC buildings controlled by both shear and flexure in Ref. [1]. The method proposed in Ref. [1] was based on relationships between required strengths of each failure system for ductility factors and damage degrees of overall system derived from the view-point of ductility factors. The proposed method was also verified using observed real damage data of low-rise RC buildings caused by past earthquakes. Results indicated that the methodology proposed in Ref. [1] compares well with real damages and is a useful strategy for rapidly identifying low-rise RC buildings having high potential seismic risk. In this study, in order to verify the applicability of the new methodology proposed in Ref. [1] to real RC building systems, seismic capacities of existing eleven low-rise RC buildings in Korea are evaluated based on the new method.

A simplified approach of assessing torsionally balanced (TB) and torsionally unbalanced (TU) low-medium rise buildings of up to 30 m in height is presented in this paper for regions of low-to-moderate seismicity. The Generalised Force Method of Analysis for TB buildings which is illustrated in the early part of the paper involves calculation of the deflection profile of the building in a 2D analysis in order that a capacity diagram can be constructed to intercept with the acceleration-displacement response spectrum diagram representing seismic actions. This approach of calculation on the planar model of a building which involves applying lateral forces to the building (waiving away the need of a dynamic analysis and yet obtaining similar results) has been adapted for determining the deflection behaviour of a TU building in the later part of the paper. Another key original contribution to knowledge is taking into account the strong dependence of the torsional response behaviour of the building on the periodic properties of the applied excitations in relation to the natural periods of vibration of the building. Many of the trends presented are not reflected in provisions of major codes of practices for the seismic design of buildings. The deflection behaviour of the building in response to displacement controlled (DC) excitations is in stark contrast to behaviour in acceleration controlled (AC), or velocity controlled (VC), conditions, and is much easier to generalise. Although DC conditions are rare with buildings not exceeding 30 m in height displacement estimates based on such conditions can be taken as upper bound estimates in order that a conservative prediction of the displacement profile at the edge of a TU building can be obtained conveniently by the use of a constant amplification factor to scale results from planar analysis.
