  • The physicochemical properties of VOx/TiO2 catalysts with different TiO2 supports were analyzed, and SCR reactions were performed. VOx/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by impregnation using anatase TiO2, which was manufactured by Sigma Aldrich and prepared from TiOCl2 and titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) as a precursor. They are denoted as VS, VC, and VP. The specific surface area of the VS was 1/10 or less of that of the VC and VP, and the dispersibility of vanadium oxide was relatively low. As a result of XPS analysis, the ratio of adsorbed oxygen was higher in VS and VP with Ti3+ than in VC. In VC and VP, vanadium mainly existed in V4+ and V3+ states in relation to the dispersibility of vanadium oxide. The amount of adsorbed oxygen contributed more to NH3-SCR activity than vanadium oxide dispersibility below 250 ℃, while vanadium oxide dispersibility contributed more to activity beyond 300 ℃. The fast SCR activity in all three samples was the highest at NO2/NOx = 0.5, followed by VS < VC < VP samples. It was determined that the dispersibility of vanadium oxide had a significant effect on fast NH3-SCR activity.

  • Fluidized bed combustion is a coal combustion technology that can reduce both SOx and NOx emission; SOx is removed by limestone that is fed into the combustion chamber and the NOx is reduced by low temperature combustion in a fluidized bed combustor and air stepping, but $N_2O$ generation is quite high. $N_2O$ is not only a greenhouse gas but also an agent of ozone destruction in the stratosphere. The calcium oxide(CaO) is known to be a catalyst of $N_2O$ decomposition. This study of $N_2O$ decomposition reaction in fixed bed reactor packed over CaO bed has been conducted. Effects of parameters such as concentration of inlet $N_2O$ gas, reaction temperature, CaO bed height and effect of $CO_2$, NO, $O_2$ gas on the decomposition reaction have been investigated. As a result of the experiment, it has been shown that $N_2O$ decomposition reaction increased with the increasing fixed bed temperature. While conversion of the reaction was decreased with increasing $CO_2$ concentration. Also, under the present of NO, the conversion of $N_2O$ decomposition is decreased. From the result of kinetic study gained the heterogeneous reaction rate on $N_2O$ decomposition. In the case of $N_2O$ decomposition over CaO, heterogeneous reaction rate is. $\frac{d[N_2O]}{dt}=\frac{3.86{\times}10^9{\exp}(-15841/R)K_{N_2O}[N_2O]}{(1+K_{N_2O}[N_2O]+K_{CO_2}[CO_2])}$. In this study, it is found that the calcium oxide is a good catalyst of $N_2O$ decomposition.

  • A MILD(Moderate and Intense Low oxygen Dilution) combustion, which is effective in the reduction of NOx, is considerably affected by the recirculation flow position of hot exhaust gas to the combustion furnace. A numerical analysis was accomplished to elucidate the flow characteristics in the MILD combustion incinerator for several cases with or without exhaust gas recirculation. It could be seen from the result of the present numerical study that the flow recirculation could be observed in the upper region over the vertical dividing wall for the case without exhaust gas recirculation. The optimal position of exhaust gas recirculation position was derived by the comparison of %RMS of x directional velocity for the cases with exhaust gas recirculation. The case with the exhaust gas recirculation position at the upper right of free board was the most effective with the smallest value of 57.4% RMS.

  • The main and side reactions of the three selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reactions with ammonia over a vanadium-based catalyst have been investigated using synthetic gas mixtures in the temperature range of $170{\sim}590^{\circ}C$. The three SCR reactions are standard SCR with pure NO, fast SCR with an equimolar mixture of NO and $NO_2$, and $NO_2$ SCR with pure $NO_2$. Vanadium based catalyst has no significant activity in NO oxidation to $NO_2$, while it has high activity for $NO_2$ decomposition at high temperatures. The selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia and the formation of nitrous oxide compete with the SCR reactions at the high temperatures. Water strongly inhibits the selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia and the formation of nitrous oxide, thus increasing the selectivity of the SCR reactions. However, the presence of water inhibits the SCR activity, most pronounced at low temperatures. In this study, the experimental results are analyzed by means of a dynamic one-dimensional isothermal heterogeneous plug-flow reactor (PFR) model according to the Eley-Rideal mechanism.

  • An experimental research with 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine was carried out to investigate the combustion and emission characteristics for various alternative fuels. The conventional diesel fuel, neat GTL, blends of 80% of GTL and 20% of biodiesel derived from waste cooking oil are utilized without any modification of engine hardware and ECU data. For GTL and blends of GTL/biodiesel fuel, the ignition delay decreased at the same operating conditions, and overall combustion duration increased slightly. Also, the peak cylinder pressure increased for blends of GTL/biodiesel compared to diesel and GTL fuel. THC and CO emissions with blends of GTL/biodiesel compared to other fuels decreased for the low and middle load conditions. But NOx emission increased due to oxygen content in biodiesel. The number concentrations of PM are higher for blends of GTL/biodiesel than other test fuels in the nucleation mode, while it had an opposite tendency in the accumulation mode, which implies more reduction of PM for blends of GTL/biodiesel on the base of mass concentration.

  • Compression ignition of homogeneous charges in IC engines indicates possibilities of achieving the high efficiency of DI diesel engines with low level of NOx and particulate emissions. The objectives of this study are to further understand the characteristics of the HCCI(Homogeneous charge compression ignition) combustion and to find ways of extending the rich HCCI operation limit in an engine-like environment. DME fuel is supplied either in the form of premixture with air or directly injected in the combustion chamber of a rapid compression and expansion machine under the conditions of various equivalence ratio and injection timing. The cylinder pressure is measured and the rate of heat release is computed from the measured pressure for the analysis of the combustion characteristics. The experimental data show that the RCEM can operate without knock on mixtures of higher equivalence ratio, when DME is directly injected in the combustion chamber than introduced as a fraction of a perfect or nearly perfect premixture. Very early fuel injection timings usually employed in HCCI operation are seen to have only insignificant effects in control of ignition timing.

  • Ozone absorbs ultraviolet light which is harmful to life. However, the recent increase of ambient ozone level due to climate change is becoming the cause of stimulating human eyes, affecting respiratory system, and damaging crops. In this paper, a study was conducted at the Taehwa Research Forest (TRF) of Seoul National University with the purpose of analyzing the characteristics of forest air chemistry based on the measurement of BVOCs emitted from forests and investigating the correlation of BVOCs with ozone generation. The results showed that levels of isoprene and MVK (Methyl Vinyl Keton)+MACR (Methacrolein) were high in summer, but level of monoterpene was high in spring. Ozone level was high from the middle of May to the middle of June, which was before the rainy season. Comparison of the correlation between ozone and isoprene during the measurement period at the TRF showing limited NOx showed that the $R^2$ was correlated with a low value of about 0.4. However, when the isoprene was actively produced from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, correlation analysis showed that $R^2$ was about 0.9, while monoterpene started to increase in the afternoon, and decreased level of ozone at night. Correlation analysis showed negative correlation. Forests have two characteristics: not only the formation of ozone but also the decomposition of ozone.

  • For gaseous fuel combustion with inherent $CO_2$ capture and low NOx emission, chemical-looping combustion may yield great advantages for the savings of energy to $CO_2$ separation and suppressing the effect on environment, In chemical-looping combustor, fuel is oxidized by metal oxide medium in a reduction reactor. Reduced particles are transported to oxidation reactor and oxidized by air and recycled to reduction reactor. The fuel and the air are never mixed, and the gases from reduction reactor, $CO_2$ and $H_2O$, leave the system as separate stream. The $H_2O$ can be easily separated by condensation and pure $CO_2$ is obtained without any loss of energy for separation. In this study, five oxygen carrier particles such as NiO/bentonite, NiO/YSZ, $(NiO+Fe_2O_3)VYSZ$, $NiO/NiAl_2O_4$, and $Co_{\chi}O_y/CoAl_2O_4$ were examined &om the viewpoints of reaction kinetics, oxygen transfer capacity, and carbon deposition characteristics. Among five oxygen particles, NiO/YSZ particle is superior in reaction rate, oxygen carrier capacity, and carbon deposition to other particles. However, at high temperature ($>900^{\circ}C$), NiO/bentonite particle also shows enough reactivity and oxygen carrier capacity to be applied in a practical system.

  • The competition to deliver ultra-low emitting vehicles at a reasonable cost is driving the automotive industry to invest significant manpower and test laboratory resources in the design optimization of increasingly complex exhaust after-treatment systems. Optimization can no longer be based on traditional approaches, which are intensive in hardware use and laboratory testing. The CFD is in high demand for the analysis and design in order to reduce developing cost and time consuming in experiments. This paper describes the development of a comprehensive practical model based on experiments for simulating the performance of automotive three-way catalytic converters, which are employed to reduce engine exhaust emissions. An experiment is conducted to measure species concentrations before and after catalytic converter for different loads on engine. The model simulates the emission system behavior by using an exhaust system heat conservation and catalyst chemical kinetic sub-model. CFD simulation is used to study the performance of automotive catalytic converter. The substrate is modeled as a porous media in FLUENT and the standard k-e model is used for turbulence. The flow pattern is changed from axial to radial by changing the substrate model inside the catalytic converter and the flow distribution and the conversion efficiency of CO, HC and NOx are achieved first, and the predictions are in good agreement with the experimental measurements. It is found that the conversion from axial to radial flow makes the catalytic converter more efficient. These studies help to understand better the performance of the catalytic converter in order to optimize the converter design.
