Designing a new reversible data hiding technique with a high embedding rate and a low compression rate for vector quantization (VQ) compressed images is encouraged. This paper proposes a novel lossless data hiding scheme for VQ-compressed images based on the joint neighboring coding technique. The proposed method uses the difference values between a current VQ index and its left and upper neighboring VQ indexes to embed n secret bits into one VQ index, where n = 1, 2, 3, or 4. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme achieves the embedding rates of 1, 2, 3, and 4 bits per index (bpi) with the corresponding average compression rates of 0.420, 0.483, 0.545, and 0.608 bit per pixel (bpp) for a 256 sized codebook. These results confirm that our scheme performs better than other selected reversible data hiding schemes.

Reversible data hiding enables the embedding of messages in a host image without any loss of host content, which is proposed for image authentication that if the watermarked image is deemed authentic, we can revert it to the exact copy of the original image before the embedding occurred. In this paper, we present an improved histogram-based reversible data hiding scheme based on prediction and sorting. A rhombus prediction is employed to explore the prediction for histogram-based embedding. Sorting the prediction has a good influence on increasing the embedding capacity. Characteristics of the pixel difference are used to achieve large hiding capacity while keeping low distortion. The proposed scheme exploits a two-stage embedding strategy to solve the problem about communicating peak points. We also present a histogram shifting technique to prevent overflow and underflow. Performance comparisons with other existing reversible data hiding schemes are provided to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme.

In this paper a reversible data hiding scheme based on histogram shifting of host image blocks is presented. This method attempts to use full available capacity for data embedding by dividing the image into non-overlapping blocks. Applying histogram shifting to each block requires that extra information to be saved as overhead data for each block. This extra information (overhead or bookkeeping information) is used in order to extract payload and recover the block to its original state. A method to eliminate the need for this extra information is also introduced. This method uses maximum gap that exists between histogram bins for finding the value of pixels that was used for embedding in sender side. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides higher embedding capacity than the original reversible data hiding based on histogram shifting method and its improved versions in the current literature while it maintains the quality of marked image at an acceptable level.

To be reversible as a data hiding method, the original content and hidden message should be completely recovered. One important objective of this approach is to achieve high embedding capacity and low distortion. Using predicted errors is very effective for increasing the embedding capacity. Sorting the predicted errors has a good influence on decreasing distortion. In this paper, we present an improved reversible data hiding scheme using upgraded histogram shifting based on sorting the predicted errors. This new scheme is characterized by the algorithm which is able to find the optimum threshold values and manage the location map effectively. Experimental results compared with other methods are presented to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method.

In this paper, we propose a novel reversible data hiding scheme in the index tables of the vector quantization (VQ) compressed images based on index set construction strategy. On the sender side, three index sets are constructed, in which the first set and the second set include the indices with greater and less occurrence numbers in the given VQ index table, respectively. The index values in the index table belonging to the second set are added with prefixes from the third set to eliminate the collision with the two derived mapping sets of the first set, and this operation of adding prefixes has data hiding capability additionally. The main data embedding procedure can be achieved easily by mapping the index values in the first set to the corresponding values in the two derived mapping sets. The same three index sets reconstructed on the receiver side ensure the correctness of secret data extraction and the lossless recovery of index table. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

This paper proposes a novel reversible image authentication method that requires neither location map nor memorization of parameters. The proposed method detects image tampering and further localizes tampered regions. Though this method once distorts an image to hide data for tamper detection, it recovers the original image from the distorted image unless no tamper is applied to the image. The method extracts hidden data and recovers the original image without memorization of any location map that indicates hiding places and of any parameter used in the algorithm. This feature makes the proposed method practical. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
This paper proposes a new lossless data embedding algorithm on spatial domain of digital images. A single key parameter is required to embed and extract data in the algorithm instead of embedding any additional information such as the location map. A $3{\times}3$ window slides over the cover image by one pixel unit, and one bit can be embedded at each position of the window. So, the ideal embedding capacity equals to the number of pixels in an image. For further increase of embedding capacity, new weight parameters for the estimation of embedding target pixels have been used. As a result, significant increase in embedding capacity and better quality of the message-embedded image in high capacity embedding have been achieved. This algorithm is verified with simulations.

Lossless data embedding is a method to insert information into a host image that guarantees complete restoration when the extraction has been done. In this paper, we propose a noble reversible data embedding algorithm for images in wavelet domain. The proposed embedding technique, which modifies histogram of wavelet coefficient, is composed of two inserting steps. Data is embedded to wavelet coefficient using modification of histogram in first embedding process. Second embedding step compensates the distortion caused by the first embedding process as well as hides more information. Hence we achieve higher inserting capacity. In view of the relationship between the embedding capacity and the PSNR value, our proposed method shows considerably higher performance than the current reversible data embedding methods.
