  • In this paper, the crack properties of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) structures for environment by experimental and analytical methods are discussed. The major role played by the steel fiber occurs in the post-cracking zone, in which the fibers bridge across the cracked matrix. Because of its improved ability to break crack, SFRC has better crack properties than that of reinforced concrete (RC). Crack properties are influenced by longitudinal reinforcement ratio, volume and type of steel fiber, strength of concrete.

  • The object of this study is to propose the bending moment-curvature relationships based on the bond properties between concrete and steel for noncraking zone, and evaluate the flexural displacement of reinforced concrete members. The bond-slip relationship and the strain hardening effect of steel were taken into account in order to evaluate the spacing of the cracks and the curvature distribution. Calculated curvature distribution along the longitudinal axis was transformed into equivalent curvature distribution. The flexural displacement was calculated by means of double intergral of the equivalent curvature. Calculated values are in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • Three dimensional flow characteristics in a liquid fuel ramjet combustor are investigated using PIV method. The combustors have two rectangular inlets that form 90 degree each other. Three guide vane is installed in each rectangular inlet to improve the flow stability. We made three cases of test combustors in which those inlet angles are 30 degree, 45 degree and 60 degree. Each combustor easily changes the size of combustor's recirculation zone with the replacement of combustors dome. The experiments are performed in the water tunnel test with the same Reynolds number in the case of Mach 0.3 at inlet. PIV software is developed to measure the flow field in the combustor and the accuracy of developed PIV program is verified with rotating disk experiment and standard data. The experimental results show that the two main streams from rectangular inlet collide near the plane of symmetry and generate two large longitudinal vortex, A large and complex three-dimensional recirculating flow is measured in the recirculation zone.

  • Friction stir welding (FSW) is a relatively new solid-state joining process which can homogenize the heterogeneous microstructure by intensely plastic deformation arising from the rotation of the welding tool. The present study applied the FSW to an A356 aluminum (AI) alloy with the as-cast heterogeneous microstructure in the T6 temper condition, and examined an effect of microstructure on mechanical properties in the weld. The base material consisted of Al matrix with a high density of strengthening precipitates, large eutectic silicon and a lot of porosities. The FSW led to fragment of the eutectic silicon, extinction of the porosities and dissolution of the strengthening precipitates in the Al alloy. The dissolution of strengthening precipitates reduced the hardness of the weld around the weld center and the transverse ultimate tensile strength of the weld. Longitudinal tensile specimen containing only the stir zone showed the roughly same strength as the base material and a much larger elongation. Moreover, Charpy impact tests indicated that the stir zone had remarkably the higher absorbed energy than the base material. The higher mechanical properties of the stir zone were attributed to a homogenization of the as-cast heterogeneous microstructure by FSW.

  • Scaled model tests were carried out to investigate a seismic behavior of reinforced concrete piers with hollow-rectangular section that were not detailed for seismic load. Additional lateral reinforcing bars were not provided that might be required for confinement against earthquake load. Two kinds of reinforcement details were considered for the longitudinal reinforcing bars: lap-spliced and continuous. In the lap-spliced model all longitudinal bars were lapped at the same height in a bottom plastic hinge zone. In the other model all longitudinal bars extended continuously throughout the height. The constructed models were subjected to quasi-static cyclic lateral loading in the presence of the constant vertical load. Limited ductile behavior was observed in the test of lap-spliced model and more ductile behavior was observed in the test of a continuous longitudinal reinforcement model.

  • We conducted three-dimensional finite element analysis to predict the presence of upcoming fault zones during tunneling. The analysis considered longitudinal displacements measured at tunnel face, and used 28 numerical models with various fault attitudes. The x-MR (moving range) control chart was used to analyze quantitatively the effects of faults distributed ahead of the tunnel face, given the occurrence of a longitudinal displacement. The numerical models with fault were classified as fault gouge, fault breccia, and fault damage zones. The width of fault cores was set to 1 m (fault gouge 0.5 m and fault breccia 0.5 m) and the width of fault damage zones was set to 2 m. The results, suggest that fault centers could be predicted at 2~26 m ahead of the tunnel face and that faults could be predicted earliest in the 45° dip model. In addition, faults could be predicted earliest when the angle between the direction of tunnel advance and the strike of the fault was smallest.

  • Purpose: We analyzed the location and type of meniscus tear associated with ACL rupture in order to estimate and prepare whether the meniscus tear is in a repairable location. Materials and Methods: We reviewed 78 cases who had ACL reconstructive surgery due to ACL rupture. We set the period of acute injury on the basis of under 12 months after trauma. The location and type of meniscus tear was analyzed in accordance with MRI findings and arthroscopic findings. Results: The 50 cases of meniscus tear were detected out of the 78 ACL rupture;32 cases were lateral meniscus tears, 24 were medial meniscus tears and 6 cases were both menisci tears. From a total of 56 meniscus tears, 30 cases were longitudinal tears, 22 cases were red-red zone tears and 35 cases(62%) were posterior horn tears. Conclusion: The most common type of meniscus tear associated with ACL rupture war longitudinal tear at the red-red zone or meniscosynovial junction. Majority of the tears located at that place can be healed with conservative treatment, arthroscopic meniscus suture.

  • In today's design trend of vehicle structure, crush zone is fiequently reinforced by adding a box-shaped sub-frame in order to avoid an excessive deformation against a high-speed offset barrier such as EU Directive 96/97 EC, IIHS offset test. That kind of vehicle structure design results in a relatively monotonic crash pulse for airbag ECU(Electronic Control Unit) located at non-crush zone. As for an angular crash event, the measured crash signal using a single-axis accelerometer in a longitudinal direction is usually weaker than that of frontal barrier crash. Therefore, it is not so easy task to achieve a satisfactory crash discrimination performance for offset and angular crash events. In this paper, we introduce a new crash discrimination algorithm using an electronic X-Y 2-axis accelerometer in order to improve crash discrimination performance especially for those crash events. The proposed method uses a crash signal in lateral direction(Y-axis) as well as in longitudinal direction(X-axis). A crash severity measure obtained from Y-axis acceleration is used to improve the discrimination between fire and no-fire events. The result obtained by the proposed measure is logically ORed with an existing algorithm block using X-axis crash signal. Simulation and pulse injection test have been conducted to verify the performance of proposed algorithm by using real crash data of a 2,000cc passenger vehicle.
