  • TIG remelting was performed to harden the surface of automobile earn shaft. Multipass remelting was conducted in longitudinal direction under argon gas atmosphere. The microstructure of as-east earn shaft was gray iron which consisted of flake graphite and pearlitic matrix. The remelted area had microstructue of both fine pearlite and ledeburite structure that consisted of globular austenite and $Fe_3C$. Hardness for as-cast earn shaft had HRc 25~28, however it increased at remelted area to HRc 53~55. Black line was found at heat affected zone next to the fusion line, that is remelt area of previous pass, during multipass remelting. Black line was identified as graphite, which was transformed from $Fe_3C$. in the ledeburite structure. It is observed that all graphites were nucleated at $Fe_3C$. and matrix interface. High density energy laser remelting process was also applied to verify whether black line could be eliminated. However, black line was still existed as observed in TIG remelting process. Regraphitization was simulated on the ledeburitic structure specimen using Gleeble 1500 with conditions of 1100 and 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 0.5, I, 3, 5 and 1Osee. From the fact that graphite was formed even at the simulation condition of 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 0.5sec, it is seen that regraphitization is an inevitable phenomenon generated whatever processes used during multipass overlap remelting.

  • Modular building is a prefabricated construction system for building where factory-produced pre-engineered modular units are delivered to site and assembled as substantial elements of a building. There are two basic kinds of modular structures. One is a load-bearing wall structure designed to transfer the load through longitudinal walls. The other is a frame structure composed of columns and beams. For frame structure, square hollow section is often used as a column member and channel as a beam member in modular unit. Lower and upper modules are fasten with bolts via a pre-installed access hole in the SHS column. However, the access holes can weaken the panel zone that would affect the behavior of beam to column connection. The 5 specimens of beam to column connections with parameters of access hole, column thickness and diaphragm were made and this paper describes the test results.

  • There is a limestone basin surrounded by the mountains consisted of Paleozoic sedimentary and metamorphic rocks in the Masung, Munkyung city, Kyungsangpook do. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the geomorphic processes of the gentle hillslopes in the marginal piedmont of Masung basin. To do so, I analyzed deposits over hillslopes and the relation ship between the distance from the divide and the height(above sea level) at the longitudinal profile of the hillslope, and considered interrelation between the distributions of the gentle hillslopes(less than 230m) and lithology. Geomorphic processes of Masung basin are as follow: (1) The depth of deposits over hillslope increases toward downstream of the hillslope. Most gravels within deposits, whose lithology is limestone, are those eroded at the boundary(overthrust fault zone) between the back-mountain and the hillslope. Deposits at the outward margin of hillslope is well sorted. and moderately imbricated. (2) Hillslope at the margin of the basin(160-230m asl) is formed by the action of 'the flow with channel'. At the boundary between the soft rock(limestone; basin floor) and hard rock(sedimentary and metamorphic rock; back-mountain), the relatively weak limestone is eroded to fresh bedrock by the subsequent action of the overland flow, and therefore discontinuity in slope appeared. (3) After hills lopes were formed, sediments(boulders and fine material) produced during dissection in back-mountain buried deposits over hillslope. In conclusion, geomorphic processes of Masung basin is 'differential erosion due to differentiation of lithological hardness' having suggested as geomorphic processes of granitic basin. However it is not 'removal of weathering material due to sheetflow' but 'erosion due to the overland flow with channel'.

  • Horsehair worms (Chordodes koreensis) develop as parasites in the bodies of grasshoppers, crickets, cockroaches, and some beetles. Chordodes koreensis is an accidental parasite of humans, livestock, or pets and poses no public health threat. The male of Chordodes koreensis in the later larval stage from canine vomitus was investigated by the scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In cross sections, the body wall is composed of four components namely epicuticle, cuticle, epidermis, and muscle layers. The parenchymal tissue fills the rest of the body and surrounds the visceral organs such as intestine, and ventral nerve cord but testes were not found. The epicuticle is a thin superficial layer whose surface shows rows of polygonal elevations called areoles. The cuticle has 17 layers of collagenous fibers spirally wound about the long axis of the worm. The section through the cuticle reveals the layers of large fibers cut obliquely lengthwise, alternating with layers of fibers sectioned obliquely crosswise. The layers of large fiber formed a double helix about longitudinal axis of the worm. The epidermis is a single layer. The muscles were interrupted by the nervous lamella in the only midventral portion. The medulla of muscle plate is composed of lightly stained cytoplasm, mitochondria, weakly developed endoplasmic reticulum, and glycogen granules. Between the medulla of a cell and the plasmalemma lies a broad cortical zone of myofilaments. The circular muscles are absent. The characteristic feature of the cytoplasm is that there was no content in peripheral mesenchyme, but was an abundance of large clear vacuoles which give the cytosome a foamy appearance. The nucleus of mesenchyme is not easily identified in our specimens.

  • This study was carried out to clarify the distribution pattern of Salicaceae species which are considered as obligatory riparian vegetation, and also the correspondence between their distribution and the environment factors. Eighty-three study sites by stratified sampling were selected from the upstream to the downstream of An-sung stream. Vegetation factors such as coverage by species, disturbance, etc., and environmental factors including microtopography, soil properties, etc., measured and analyzed. Salicaceae species were identified as total 2 genera, 11 species through all study area, and the average occurring species were 2.8 species.5. koreensis among other species showed highest occurring frequency at An-sung streams, and also it was distributed widely through study area. S. gracizistyla was mainly fecund at upstream sites, where sandy soil texture and high longitudinal slope were developed. S. purpurea vats. japonica was mostly observed in the sandy soil, the same as S. gracilistytu and however, was not dominant but rather mixed with S. gracitistyta and S. koreensis. On the other hand, distribution of S. glandulosa were closely related with littoral zone of the lake and the lower sea level with sandy loam and loamy sand Boils of high organic matter content. Under CCA, canonical correspondence analysis, distribution of Saticaceae species was positively correlated with environmental gradients such as soil properties along to topography.

  • River areas include channels, floodplains and all the areas affected by physical and ecological processes in river systems. It is noticeably different from present riparian zone which is bounded by dykes. In this study, two methods for delineation of a floodplain are proposed, which are used for evaluation of the function of a river. One of them is a geomorphology-based technique and the other is hydrology-based inundation analysis. For the Mankyung River, these two methods are applied to delineate the floodplain area. Areas delineated with both methods are mutually compared. The results show that the geomorphology-based method is suitable for the delineation of a valley bottom, including the floodplain in a broader sense, which is unlike an inundated area reflecting contemporary hydrologic conditions. Compared with other flood frequency areas, a 100-year flood inundation area was found reasonable to represent the spatial extent of a floodplain without regard to the longitudinal location along a river. However, it is necessary in certain rivers reach where the division of a channel exists to compare a geomorphological analysis on a valley bottom with an inundation area of different frequencies.

  • There was significant reduction in the mitotic indices of oat roots treated with alachlor. Uniform decrease in prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase as treatment time increasing was observed. Alachlor did not disrupt mitosis, but rather inhibited the onset of mitosis. Labeled dividing cells were significantly inhibited, but the number of labeled interphase cells of all treatment were increased, as compared with control in 8 hr and 12hr period. Labeled dividing cells which entered mitosis thru $G_2$ were inhibited approximately 68% at 8hr after treatment with $1{\times}10^{-5}$ M of alachlor. Alachlor apparently inhibited from the $G_2$stage into mitosis of dividing cells. After 24 hr treatment, 12.1% abd 46.6% inhibition of coleoptile growth occurred at $1{\times}10^{-5}$ M and $1{\times}10^{-4}$ M, respectively. Cell elongation was inhibited by alachlor but was less sensitive than cell division. The longitudinal section cells of oat roots treated with $1{\times}10^{-4}$ M alachlor for 12 hr were observed to be enlarged central cylinder and also showed degradation of apical meristem zone, as compared with the untreated roots.

  • Using stereo, light, and scanning electron microscopes, we researched the anatomical and histological structure of Chaenogobius gulosus's olfactory organ and compared it to those of sympatric gobies Luciogobius guttatus and Favonigobius gymnauchen. Results revealed the following common characteristics: i) tubular anterior nostril (AN) and flat posterior nostril (PN), ii) a single longitudinal lamella, iii) two accessory nasal sacs (ANS, ethmoidal and lacrimal), iv) abundant sensory epithelium lymphatic cells (LC), v) an eosinophil cell, and vi) a ciliary length a quarter of the knob diameter in the olfactory receptor neuron (ORN). Some characteristics are specific to C. gulosus and different from the other two gobies: i) 0.5~1.0 mm AN and 0.2~0.5 mm PN (vs. 0.2~0.3 mm and 0.2~0.3 mm in L. guttatus; 0.2~0.4 mm and 0.1~0.3 mm in F. gymnauchen), ii) two ANS (vs. absence in L. guttatus; two in F. gymnauchen), iii) abundant LC (vs. low in L. guttatus and F. gymnauchen), iv) low density non-sensory cilia on the lamellar surface (vs. high in L. guttatus; low in F. gymnauchen), and v) a quarter ciliary length to knob diameter ratio in the ORN (vs. mixture of a quarter to equal ratio in L. guttatus; two or three times in F. gymnauchen). From these results, we confirmed the C. gulosus olfactory organ has adapted anatomically and histologically to the sand-rock tidal zone.

  • A pre-existing landform is created by weathering and erosion along the bedrock fault and the weak zone. A neotectonic landform is formed by neotectonic movements such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and Quaternary faults. It is difficult to clearly distinguish the landform in the actual field because the influence of the tectonic activity in the Korean Peninsula is relatively small, and the magnitude of surface processes (e.g., erosion and weathering) is intense. Thus, to better understand the impact of tectonic activity and distinguish between pre-existing landforms and neotectonic landforms, it is necessary to understand the development process of pre-existing landforms depending on the bedrock characteristics. This study used a two-dimensional numerical landscape evolution model (LEM) to study the spatio-temporal development of landscape according to the different erodibility under the same factors of climate and the uplift rate. We used hill-slope indices (i.e., relief, mean elevation, and slope) and channels (i.e., longitudinal profile, normalized channel steepness index, and stream order) to distinguish the difference according to different bedrocks. As a result of the analysis, the terrain with high erosion potential shows low mean elevation, gentle slope, low stream order, and channel steepness index. However, the value of the landscape with low erosion potential differs from that with high erodibility. In addition, a knickpoint came out at the boundary of the bedrock. When researching the actual topography, the location around the border of difference in bedrock has only been considered a pre-existing factor. This study suggested that differences in bedrock and various topographic indices should be comprehensively considered to classify pre-existing and active tectonic topography.

  • The objectives of this study were to analyze the longitudinal gradient and temporal variations of water quality in Daecheong Reservoir in relation to the major inflowing streams from the watershed, during 2001~2010. For the study, we selected 7 main-stream sites of the reservoir along the main axis of the reservoir, from the headwater to the dam and 8 tributary streams. In-reservoir nutrients of TN and TP showed longitudinal declines from the headwater to the dam, which results in a distinct zonation of the riverine ($R_z$, M1~M3), transition ($T_z$, M4~M6), and lacustrine zone ($L_z$, M7) in water quality, as shown in other foreign reservoirs. Chlorophyll-a (CHL) and BOD as an indicator of organic matter, were maximum in the $T_z$. Concentration of total phosphorus (TP) was the highest (8.52 $mg\;L^{-1}$) on March in the $R_z$, and was the highest (165 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$) in the $L_z$ on July. Values of TN was the maximum (377 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$) on August in the $R_z$, and was the highest (3.76 $mg\;L^{-1}$) in the $L_z$ on August. Ionic dilution was evident during September~October, after the monsoon rain. The mean ratios of TN : TP, as an indicator of limiting factor, were 88, which indicates that nitrogen is a surplus for phytoplankton growth in this system. Nutrient analysis of inflowing streams showed that major nutrient sources were headwater streams of T1~T2 and Ockcheon-Stream of T5, and the most influential inflowing stream to the reservoir was T5, which is located in the mid-reservoir, and is directly influenced by the waste-water treatment plants. The key parameters, influenced by the monsoon rain, were TP and suspended solids (SS). Empirical models of trophic variables indicated that variations of CHL in the $R_z$ ($R^2$=0.044, p=0.264) and $T_z$ ($R^2$=0.126, p=0.054) were not accounted by TN, but were significant (p=0.032) in the $L_z$. The variation of the log-transformed $I_r$-CHL was not accounted ($R^2$=0.258, p=0.110) by $I_w$-TN of inflowing streams, but was determined ($R^2$=0.567, p=0.005) by $I_w$-TP of inflowing streams. In other words, TP inputs from the inflowing streams were the major determinants on the in-reservoir phytoplankton growth. Regression analysis of TN : TP suggested that the ratio was determined by P, rather than N. Overall, our data suggest that TP and suspended solids, during the summer flood period, should be reduced from the eutrophication control and P-input from Ockcheon-Stream should be controlled for water quality improvement.
