A sharp curved ballasted track on earthwork that was connected with a direct fixation slab track on steel box railway bridges have been deformed and damaged despite the frequently maintenance by a restoring force of sharp curved rail and track-bridge interaction forces such as axial forces and longitudinal displacement of continuous welded rail(CWR) owing to their structural characteristics, calling for alternatives to improve the structural safety and track irregularity. In this study, the authors aim to prove a cause of deformation for the sharp curved ballasted tracks to enhance the structural safety and track irregularity of ballasted track in service. A track-bridge interaction analysis and a finite-element method analysis for the sharp curved ballasted track were performed to consider the axial force and longitudinal displacement of CWR, the temperature and the effect of restoring force of sharp curved rail. From the results, the deformation of the sharp curved ballasted track with adjusted sleeper spacing from 833mm to 590mm were significantly reduced.
Purpose: This research is to develop Trailer Durability Test of towing device, in order to cover usage conditions of bike type as well as general type trailer. With the diversification of leisure activities, the population that enjoys various sports and leisure has increased rapidly, and the number of vehicles equipped with camping trailers and bike carriers is also increasing steadily. The purpose of this study is to develop a durable vehicle that has no problem in various customer conditions. Methods: We measured the input load under various conditions of the user by attaching load cell to the body fixing part and towing ball of the towing device. The load in various modes was measured, and the difference between the trailer and the bike carrier type was compared and analyzed. Results: Due to the difference in fixing method and weight between the two types, the trailer has a large longitudinal force and the bike type has a large vertical force. Therefore, it is necessary to durability test method capable of satisfying all longitudinal force and vertical force. Conclusion: We improved the durability test of the towing device by changing the test surface. The new mode has made it possible to shorten the durability test schedule by increasing test efficiency.
The compressive and dynamic properties of magnetorheological elastomers were investigated as functions of magnetizable particle volume fraction, alignment of the embedded particle and magnetic force. The specimens consisted of pure and filled silicons with randomly dispersed, longitudinal and transverse aligned magnetizable particle chains. To align the embedded particles in the elastomer, the cross-linking of the elastomer composites took place in a magnetic field. The compression and dynamic tests in the absence and the presence of different magnetic forces were carried out. The modulus and loss factor of the elastomer composites increase with increasing volume fraction at the same magnetic force. The case of longitudinal alignment shows a high modulus and loss factor when compared to the case of transverse alignment or random dispersion.
A mechanical model was developed to predict the behavior of point-loaded RC slender beams (a/d > 2.5) without stirrups. It is commonly accepted by most researchers that a diagonal tension crack plays a predominant role in the failure mode of these beams, but the failure mechanism of these members is still debatable. In this paper, it was assumed that diagonal tension failure was triggered by the concrete cover splitting due to the dowel action at the initial location of diagonal tension cracks, which propagate from flexural cracks. When concrete cover splitting occurred, the shape of a diagonal tension crack was simultaneously developed, which can be determined from the principal tensile stress trajectory. This fictitious crack rotates onto the crack tip with load increase. During the rotation, all forces acting on the crack (i.e, dowel force of longitudinal bars, vertical component of concrete tensile force, shear force by aggregate interlock, shear force in compression zone) were calculated by considering the kinematical conditions such as crack width or sliding. These forces except for the shear force in the compression zone were uncoupled with respect to crack width and sliding by the proposed constitutive relations for friction along the crack. Uncoupling the shear forces along the crack was aimed at distinguishing each force from the total shear force and clarifying the failure mechanism of RC slender beams without stirrups. In addition, a proposed method deriving the dowel force of longitudinal bars made it possible to predict the secondary shear failure. The proposed model can be used to predict not only the entire behavior of point-loaded RC slender shear beams, but also the ultimate shear strength. The experiments used to validate the proposed model are reported in a companion paper.

It is well known that the shear strength of an RC column subjected to a lateral force decreases with the increase of the displacement ductility of column. This decreasing rate of shear strength is quite dependent on the initial shear strength. Therefore, the evaluation of the initial shear strength is important to predict the shear strength with reasonable accuracy. The shear behavior is complex because many parameters, such as the sectional shape, aspect ratio, axial force, longitudinal bars and ductility, are mutually interactive. In this study, the initial shear strength has been investigated by experiments varying parameters such as the aspect ratios, void ratios, ratio of longitudinal bars and sectional types. A new empirical equation for the initial shear strength, considering the ratio of the longitudinal bars, has been proposed and its validity has been assessed.

In the case that the average velocity within rectangular-shaped sedimentation basin is less than 1.5cm/sec, and Froude number less than $10^{-6}$, it can not be expected that the longitudinal baffle improves the sedimentation efficiency. Also, since relatively lower velocity increases the effect of geostrophic body force, asymmetric flow pattern on a plane occurs within the basin. From the results of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation, in the case that the highest velocity within rectangular-shaped sedimentation basin is over 1.5cm/sec, and Froude number over $10^{-6}$, it can be expected that the longitudinal baffle installed within rectangular-shaped sedimentation basin improves the sedimentation efficiency.
In designing the high-speed railroad track, it is important to utilize appropriate track components to maintain uniform stiffness and ensure track alignment within the tolerance set for that system. In this regard, continuous welded rails (CWRs) were introduced to the Korean railways. Yet the installation of CWRs can result in an adverse impact due to the track/structure interaction on bridge sections yielding variations in the stiffness at the expansion joints. It may also impose additional axial force, generate excessive stress or deflection on track, and loosen the ballast at the ends as a bridge deck contracts or expands owing to a thermally-induced dynamic response. The risk is even greater in a long bridge deck, resulting in track longitudinal irregularities, deteriorating passenger's comfort, and increasing maintenance efforts. This study evaluates the performance of ZLR and their impact on track longitudinal irregularities through the track measuring results on a test section installed the ZLR in order to minimize the thermally-induced responses and the maintenance efforts for the high speed railway bridges.

The objective of this research is to evaluate of seismic performance for reinforced concrete bridge piers with lap splices of longitudinal reinforcement steels using predicting of nonlinear hysteric behavior. For the purpose, enhanced analytical trilinear hystretic model has been proposed to simulate the force-displacement hysteretic curve of RC bridge piers under repeated reversal loads. The moment capacity and corresponding curvature in the plastic hinge have been determined, and the enhanced hysteretic behavior model by five different kinds of branches has been proposed for modeling the stiffness variation of RC section under cyclic loading. The strength and stiffness degradation index are introduced to compute the hysteretic curve for various confinement steel ratios, In addition, the modified curvature factor has been introduced to forecast of seismic performance of longitudinal steel lap spliced and retrofitted specimens. The results of this research will be useful to predict of seismic performance for longitudinal steel with lap spliced and its retrofitted specimens.
This paper proposes the linear induction motor with salient poles, transverse flux and the secondary aluminum conductor for a new type urban MAGLEV. Compared with the more usual kind of linear induction motor with longitudinal flux, TFLIM have flux paths tying transversely to the direction of motion. This shortens the magnetic circuit and produces the thrust, the attraction force and the lateral stabilization force simultaneously. Owing to these electrodynamic force, TFLIM will be usable to a new type urban MGLEV.
We investigated the longitudinal variations in zooplankton abundances and their related physicochemical properties at nine stations located between $136^{\circ}W$ and $128^{\circ}W$ at $10.5^{\circ}N$ in the northeastern Pacific in summer 2004. Temperature, salinity, inorganic nutrients, chlorophyll-a (hereafter chl-a) and zooplankton ($>200\;{\mu}m$) were sampled within the depth from the surface to 200 m depth at $1^{\circ}$ longitude intervals. Zooplankton($>200\;{\mu}m$) samples were vertically collected at two depth intervals from surface to 200 m, consisting of surface mixed and lower layers (thermocline$\sim$200 m). Longitudinal distributional pattern of hydrological parameters (especially salinity) was physically influenced by the intensity of westward geostrophic current passage relating to the NEC (North Equatorial Current). Data from the longitudinal survey showed clear zonal distributions in the hydrological parameters(temperature, salinity and nutrients). However, spatial patterns of the chl-a concentrations and zooplankton abundances were mostly independent of the zonal distributions of hydrological parameters. The two peaks of zooplankton abundance in the surface mixed layer were characterized by different controlling factors such as bottom-up control from nutrients to zooplankton ($129^{\circ}W$) and accumulation by increment of friction force and taxonomic interrelationship ($133^{\circ}$ and $134^{\circ}W$). Divergence-related upwelling caused introduction of nutrients into surface waters leading to the increment of chl-a concentration and zooplankton abundances ($129^{\circ}W$). Increased friction force in relation to reduced flow rates of geostrophic currents caused accumulation of zooplankton drifting from eastern stations of study area($133^{\circ}$ and $134^{\circ}W$). Besides, high correlation between immature copepods and carnivorous groups such as chaetognaths and cyclopoids also possibly contributed to the enhanced total abundance of zooplankton in the surface mixed layer (p<0.05). Zooplankton community was divided into three groups (A, B, C) which consecutively included the eastern peak of zooplankton($129^{\circ}W$), the western peak($133^{\circ}$ and $134^{\circ}W$) and high nutrient but low chl-a concentration and zooplankton abundance ($136^{\circ}W$). Moreover, Group B corresponded to the westward movement of low saline waters(<33.6 psu) from 128 to $132^{\circ}W$. In summary, longitudinal distributions of zooplankton community was characterized by three different controlling factors: bottom-up control ($129^{\circ}W$), accumulation by increased friction force and relationships among zooplankton groups ($133^{\circ}$ and $134^{\circ}W$), and mismatch between hydrological parameters and zooplankton in the high nutrient low chlorophyll area ($136^{\circ}W$) during the study period.
