This study purposes to derive the predictive model for the cold tolerance of Brassica napus, using the data collected in the Tree Breeding Lab of Gyeongsang National University during July and August of 2016. Three Brassica napus samples were treated at each of low temperatures from $4^{\circ}C$ to $-12^{\circ}C$ by decrement of $4^{\circ}C$, step by step, and electrolyte leakage levels were measured at each stage. Electrolyte leakages were observed tangibly from $-4^{\circ}C$. We tried to fit the six nonlinear regression models to the electrolyte leakage data of Brassica napus: 3-parameter logistic model, baseline logistic model, 4-parameter logistic model, (4-1)-parameter logistic model, 3-parameter Gompertz model, and (3-1)-parameter Gompertz model. The baseline levels of the electrolyte leakage estimated by these models were 4.81%, 4.07%, 4.19%, 4.07%, 4.55%, and 0%, respectively. The estimated median lethal temperature, LT50, were $-5.87^{\circ}C$, $-6.31^{\circ}C$, $-6.05^{\circ}C$, $-6.35^{\circ}C$, $-4.98^{\circ}C$, and $-5.15^{\circ}C$, respectively. We compared and discussed the measures of goodness of fit to select the appropriate nonlinear regression model.

Objectives:The purpose of this study is to 1) conduct a discrimination analysis of schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder using MMPI profile through artificial neural network analysis and logistic regression analysis, 2) to make a comparison between advantages and disadvantages of the two methods, and 3) to demonstrate the usefulness of artificial neural network analysis of psychiatric data. Procedure:The MMPI profiles for 181 schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder patients were selected. Of these profiles, 50 were randomly placed in the learning group and the remaining 131 were placed in the validation group. The artificial neural network was trained using the profiles of the learning group and the 131 profiles of the validation group were analyzed. A logistic regression analysis was then conducted in a similar manner. The results of the two analyses were compared and contrasted using sensitivity, specificity, ROC curves, and kappa index. Results:Logistic regression analysis and artificial neural network analysis both exhibited satisfactory discriminating ability at Kappa index of greater than 0.4. The comparison of the two methods revealed artificial neural network analysis is superior to logistic regression analysis in its discriminating capacity, displaying higher values of Kappa index, specificity, and AUC(Area Under the Curve) of ROC curve than those of logistic regression analysis. Conclusion:Artificial neural network analysis is a new tool whose frequency of use has been increasing for its superiority in nonlinear applications. However, it does possess insufficiencies such as difficulties in understanding the relationship between dependent and independent variables. Nevertheless, when used in conjunction with other analysis tools which supplement it, such as the logistic regression analysis, it may serve as a powerful tool for psychiatric data analysis.
The statistical regression model is one of the most frequently used clinical analysis methods. It has basic assumption of linearity, additivity and normal distribution of data. However, most of biological data in medical field are nonlinear and unevenly distributed. To overcome the discrepancy between the basic assumption of statistical model and actual biological data, we propose a new analytical method based on artificial neural network. The newly developed multilayer perceptron(MLP) is trained with 120 data set (60 normal, 60 patient). On applying test data, it shows the discrimination power of 0.76. The diabetic risk factors were also identified from the MLP neural network model and the logistic regression model. The signigicant risk factors identified by MLP model were post prandial glucose level(PP2), sex(male), fasting blood sugar(FBS) level, age, SBP, AC and WHR. Those from the regression model are sex(male), PP2, age and FBS. The combined risk factors can be identified using the MLP model. Those are total cholesterol and body weight, which is consistent with the result of other clinical studies. From this experiment we have learned that MLP can be applied to the combined risk factor analysis of biological data which can not be provided by the conventional statistical method.
A logistic model for describing combined effects of both temperature and wetness period on appressorium formation was developed using laboratory data on percent appressorium formation of Colletotrichum acutatum. In addition, the possible use of the logistic model for forecasting infection risks was also evaluated as compared with a first-order linear model. A simplified equilibrium model for enzymatic reactions was applied to obtain a temperature function for asymptote parameter (A) of logistic model. For the position (B) and the rate (k) parameters, a reciprocal model was used to calculate the respective temperature functions. The nonlinear logistic model described successfully the response of appressorium formation to the combined effects of temperature and wetness period. Especially the temperature function for asymptote parameter A reflected the response of upper limit of appressorium formation to temperature, which showed the typical temperature response of enzymatic reactions in the cells. By having both temperature and wetness period as independent variables, the nonlinear logistic model can be used to determine the length of wetness periods required for certain levels of appressorium formation under different temperature conditions. The infection model derived from the nonlinear logistic model can be used to calculate infection risks using hourly temperature and wetness period data monitored by automated weather stations in the fields. Compared with the nonlinear infection model, the linear infection model always predicted a shorter wetness period for appressorium formation, and resulted in significantly under- and over-estimation of response at low and high temperatures, respectively.

This study was carried out to suggest an experimental base in selecting the drought resistance of plants. Adopting the natural drought method, this paper studies the drought resistance of 12 kinds of ground cover plants. focusing on analyzing the changes of relative water content on leaf, relative electric conductivity and chlorophyll content in 12 kinds of plants, and and the relation between soil water content under drought stress. The drought resistance of the plants were subject to laboratory and rooftop drought resistance treatments. The Logistic model of nonlinear regression analysis was used to evaluate the lethal time that were predicted with the range of 10.4~30.1d on roof top, and 19.5~39.0d on hothouse. The result shows that with the increase of stress time, relative water content and chlorophyll content on leaf were in a downward trend; the relative electric conductivity was upward tendency. Among 12 species of ground cover plants, exclude Pulsatilla koreana, Ainsliaea acerifolia were selected for rooftop plants because they showed resist drought strongly and took adaptive ability.

This study was carried out to suggest an experimental base in selecting the cold tolerance of plants. The cold tolerance of the plants were subject to laboratory low temperature treatments and cold processing time were evaluated using both electrolyte leakage and regrowth test. The Logistic model of nonlinear regression analysis was used to evaluate the lethal temperatures that were predicted with the range of $-16.1{\sim}-24.4^{\circ}C$. The order of low-temperature resistance was Sedum reflexum > S. spurium > Ophiopogon japonicus > S. album > S. takevimense > Dianthus chinensis. At the lowest temperature of $13.4^{\circ}C$ the electrolyte leakage value of the plants were lower than 50% demonstrating that they could be applied stably to the roof installed in Korea during the winter with the lowest temperature of $-13.5^{\circ}C$.
In this study, the development of a weight estimation model of electronic scale with nonlinear characteristics is presented using polynomial regression analysis. The output voltage of the load cell was measured directly using the reference mass. And a polynomial regression model was obtained using the matrix and curve fitting function of MS Office Excel. The weight was measured in 100g units using a load cell electronic scale measuring up to 5kg and the polynomial regression model was obtained. The error was calculated for simple($1^{st}$), $2^{nd}$ and $3^{rd}$ order polynomial regression. To analyze the suitability of the regression function for each model, the coefficient of determination was presented to indicate the correlation between the estimated mass and the measured data. Using the third order polynomial model proposed here, a very accurate model was obtained with a standard deviation of 10g and the determinant coefficient of 1.0. Based on the theory of multi regression model presented here, it can be used in various statistical researches such as weather forecast, new drug development and economic indicators analysis using logistic regression analysis, which has been widely used in artificial intelligence fields.
Tunnel displacement happens during the process of stress redistribution by tunnelling. Tunnel displacement can be divided into 3 types such as displacements occurring before excavation, non-measured displacements after excavation and measured displacements after excavation. Because measurements of displacements occurring before excavation and non-measured displacement after excavation are difficult and time-consuming in the field, many researchers have studied on total displacement and its characteristics with excavation using numerical analysis. In this study, we used a 3-D back analysis to estimate total displacement by rock mass grades in tunnel constructed in sedimentary rock. We reduced error between measured displacements and calculated displacements from a 3-D numerical analysis, and then estimated suitable rock mass properties by RMR classes. Ultimately, Logistic nonlinear regressions of total displacement with tunnelling were estimated by least square estimation.
Growth curves including Bass, Logistic and Gompertz functions are widely used in forecasting the market demand. Nonlinear least square method is often adopted for estimating the model parameters but it is difficult to set up the starting value for each parameter. If a wrong starting point is selected, the result may lead to erroneous forecasts. This paper proposes a method of selecting starting values for model parameters in estimating some growth curves by nonlinear least square method through grid search and transformation into linear regression model. Resealing the market data using the national economic index makes it possible to figure out the range of parameters and to utilize the grid search method. Application to some real data is also included, where the performance of our method is demonstrated.

In high-dimensional data analysis, sufficient dimension reduction (SDR) has been considered as an attractive tool for reducing the dimensionality of predictors while preserving regression information. The principal support vector machine (PSVM) (Li et al., 2011) offers a unified approach for both linear and nonlinear SDR. This article comprehensively explores a variety of SDR methods based on the PSVM, which we call principal machines (PM) for SDR. The PM achieves SDR by solving a sequence of convex optimizations akin to popular supervised learning methods, such as the support vector machine, logistic regression, and quantile regression, to name a few. This makes the PM straightforward to handle and extend in both theoretical and computational aspects, as we will see throughout this article.
