In this paper, the interlaminar crack problems of a fiber metal laminate (FML) under generalized plane deformation are studied using the theory of anisotropic elasticity. The crack is considered to be embedded in the matrix interlaminar region (including adhesive zone and resin rich zone) of the FML. Based on Fourier integral transformation and the stress matrix formulation, the current mixed boundary value problem is reduced to solving a system of Cauchy-type singular integral equations of the 1st kind. Within the theory of linear fracture mechanics, the stress intensity factors are defined on terms of the solutions of integral equations and numerical results are obtained for in-plane normal (mode I) crack surface loading. The effects of location and length of crack in the 3/2 and 2/1 ARALL, GLARE or CARE type FML's on the stress intensity factors are illustrated.
Unlike document images, license plate images are mostly captured under uneven lighting conditions. In particular, a shadowed region has sharp intensity variation and sometimes that region has very high intensity by reflected light. This paper presents a new technique for thresholding license plate images. This approach consists of three parts. In the first part, it performs a rough thresholding and classifies the type of license plate to adjust some parameters optimally. Next, it identifies a shadow type and binarizes license plate images by adjusting the window size and location according to the shadow type. And finally, post-processing based on the cluster analysis is performed. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperformed five well-known methods.
One of the main degradation of steam generator tubes is stress corrosion cracking induced by residual stress. The resulting damages can cause tube bursting or leakage of the primary water which contained radioactivity. Primary water stress corrosion crack occurs at the location of tube/tubesheet hard rolled transition zone. In order to investigate the effect of shot peening on stress corrosion cracking, stress intensity factors are calculated for the crack which is located in the induced residual stress field.

Forest fire danger rate of thinning area was lower than that of non thinning area, because height rate of leewardside in burned stem of tree, damage rate of crown and mortality of tree in thinning area were 30.8%, 37% and 48.4% lower than that in non-thinning area, respectively. Intensity of forest fire varied depending upon topographical condition up slope, down slope, aspect, location as well as species, breast height diameter and forest tree density. Especially, a mountaintop area was burned down when forest fire was spread to up slope ridge of mountain.
This paper presents the analysis of wind speeds data measured on top of three neighboring high-rise buildings close to a beach in Xiamen city, China, during Typhoon "Usagi" 2013. Wind tunnel simulation was carried out to validate the field measurement results. Turbulence intensity, turbulence integral scale, power spectrum and cross correlation of recorded wind speed were studied in details. The low frequency trend component of the typhoon speed was also discussed. The field measurement results show turbulence intensity has strong dependence to the wind speed, upwind terrain and even the relative location to the Typhoon center. The low frequency fluctuation could severely affect the characteristics of wind. Cross correlation of the measured wind speeds on different buildings also showed some dependence on the upwind terrain roughness. After typhoon made landfall, the spatial correlation of wind speeds became weak with the coherence attenuating quickly in frequency domain.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate theoretically the effect of residual stress due to welding in stress intensity factor of a plate containing the Model I Crack in different crack size and location, and on fatigue crack growth rate. The initiation of crack is found to be possible only in the region of tensile residual stress. The most dangerous crack has the values of d/b and a/b equal to about 0.6 and 1.0, respectively, where d/b is the ratio of distance from the crack to welding bead and the width of tensile residual stress region and a/b is the ratio of crack length and tensile residual stress region. The crack perpendicular to and on the line of welding bead and with a/b equal to about 0.6 has maximum stress intensity factor. The theoretical fatigue crack growth rate under residual stress and applied stress, which is obtained from Forman's Law by stress superposition, is relatively in good agreement with Glinka's[8] experimental value. The fatigue crack growth is shown to be retarded due to residual stress distribution.
A fuel cell is an energy conversion device that converts a chemical energy directly into an electrical energy and has higher energy efficiency than an internal combustion engine, but solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) consisting of brittle ceramic material remains as a major issue regarding the mechanical properties as the crack formation and propagation. In this study, the stress distribution and crack behavior around the crack tip were evaluated, due to investigated the effects of the surface crack at the operating condition of high temperature. As a result, the difference of the generated stress was insignificant at operating conditions of high temperature according to the surface crack length changes. This is because, the high stiffness interconnect has a closed structure to suppress cell deformation about thermal expansion. The stress intensity factor ratio $K_{II}/K_I$ increased as the crack depth increased, at that time the effect of $K_{II}$ is larger than that of $K_I$. Also the maximum stress intensity factor increased as the crack depth increased, but the location of crack was generated at the electrolyte/anode interface, not at the crack tip.
Pitting wear is a dominant form of polyethylene surface damage in total knee replacements, and may originate from surface cracks that propagate under repeated tribological contact. In this study, stress intensity factors, $K_{I}$ and $K_{II}$, were calculated for a surface crack in a polyethylene - CoCr - bone system under the rolling and/or sliding contact pressures. Crack length and load location were considered in determination of probable crack propagation mechanisms and fracture modes. Positive $K_{I}$ values were obtained for shorter cracks in rolling contact and for all crack lengths when the sliding load was apart from the crack. $K_{II}$, was the greatest when the load was directly adjacent to the crack $(g/a={\pm}1)$. Sliding friction caused a substantial increase of both $K_{I}^{max}$ and $K_{II}^{max}$. The effective Mode I stress intensity factors, $K_{eff}$, were the greatest at $g/a={\pm}1$, showing the significance of high shear stresses generated by loads adjacent to surface cracks. Such behavior of $K_{eff}$ suggests mechanisms for surface pitting by which surface cracks may propagate along their original plane under repeated rolling or sliding contact.
Locoregional failure is the most frequent pattern of failure in locally advanced head and neck cancer patients and it leads to death in most of the patients. Second primary tumors occurring in the other head and neck region reach up to almost 40% of long-term survivors. Recommended and preferred retreatment option in operable patients is salvage surgical resection, reporting a 5-year overall survival of up to 40%. However, because of tumor location, extent, and underlying comorbidities, salvage surgery is often limited and compromised by incomplete resection. Reirradiation with or without combined chemotherapy is an appropriate option for unresectable recurrence. Reirradiation is carefully considered with a case-by-case basis. Reirradiation protocol enrollment is highly encouraged prior to committing patient to an aggressive therapy. Radiation doses greater than 60 Gy are usually recommended for successful salvage. Despite recent technical improvement in intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), the use of concurrent chemotherapy, and the emergence of molecularly targeted agents, careful patient selection remain as the most paramount factor in reirradiation. Tumors that recur or persist despite aggressive prior chemoradiation therapy imply the presence of chemoradio-resistant clonogens. Treatment protocols that combine novel targeted radiosensitizing agents with conformal high precision radiation are required to overcome the resistance while minimizing toxicity. Recent large number of data showed that IMRT may provide better locoregional control with acceptable acute or chronic morbidities. However, additional prospective studies are required before a definitive conclusion can be drawn on safety and effectiveness of IMRT.
Today's cities require deeper understanding of the thermal environment and PM10 as their management becomes more critical. Based on these circumstances, this study investigated the Granger causality between the thermal environment and PM10 of the 25 districts of Seoul, the most populous and urbanized city in Korea. The results of the Granger causality test on the thermal environment and PM10 were classified into 12 types. Except for type 12, the temperature and urban island heat intensity of the other 11 types operated as a Granger-cause to each other in both directions. Temperature operates as a Granger-cause of urban island heat intensity in type 12. The PM10 level and urban pollution island intensity operated as a Granger-cause to each other in all districts. For types 1 and 2, thermal environment operated as a Granger-cause to PM10 in one direction, and type 3-type 12 confirmed that thermal environment and PM10 operated as a Granger-cause in both directions. Findings reveal the intricate causalities between thermal environment and PM10 at the district level and suggest mitigation strategies that are more location based.
