For vibration control of civil structures, especially large civil structures, one of the important issues is how to place a minimal number of actuators and sensors at their respective optimal locations to achieve the predetermined control performance. In this paper, a methodology is presented for the determination of the minimal number and optimal location of actuators and sensors for vibration control of building structures under earthquake excitation. In the proposed methodology, the number and location of the actuators are first determined in terms of the sequence of performance index increments and the predetermined control performance. A multi-scale response reconstruction method is then extended to the controlled building structure for the determination of the minimal number and optimal placement of sensors with the objective that the reconstructed structural responses can be used as feedbacks for the vibration control while the predetermined control performance can be maintained. The feasibility and accuracy of the proposed methodology are finally investigated numerically through a 20-story shear building structure under the El-Centro ground excitation and the Kobe ground excitation. The numerical results show that with the limited number of sensors and actuators at their optimal locations, the predetermined control performance of the building structure can be achieved.
A hybrid control system is presented for seismic-resistant building structures with and without soil-structure interaction (SSI). The hybrid control is a damper-actuator-bracing control system composed of passive and active controllers. An intelligent algorithm is developed for the hybrid system, in which the passive damper is designed for minor and moderate earthquakes and the active control is designed to activate when the structural response is greater than a given threshold quantity. Thus, the external energy for active controller can be optimally utilized. In the control of a multistory building, the controller placement is determined by evaluating the optimal location index (OLI) calculated from six earthquake sources. In the study, the soil-structure interaction is considered both in frequency domain and time domain analyses. It is found that the interaction can significantly affect the control effectiveness. In the hybrid control algorithm with intelligent strategy, the working stages of passive and active controllers can be different for a building with and without considering SSI. Thus SSI is essential to be included in predicting the response history of a controlled structure.

In this paper, we describe a system for controlling the perceptual processes of two cooperative mobile robots that addresses the issue of enhancing perceptual awareness. We define awareness here as knowing the location of other robots in the environment. The proposed system benefits from a formalism called perceptual anchoring. Here, perceptual anchoring enhances the awareness of the system by employing an anchor-based active gaze control strategy or active perceptual anchoring to control the perceptual effort according to what is important at a given time. By anchoring we extend the notion of awareness as knowing what the symbols in the control module represent to by connecting them to the objects or features in the environment. We demonstrate the present system through a simulation of two nonholonomic mobile robots performing a cooperative transportation by carrying a cargo to a target location where there are two other robots moving about. The system is able to efficiently focus the perceptual effort and thus able to safely carry the cargo to the target position.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the flexible structure of parabolic shell using photostrictive actuators. The analysis is made to know its dynamic behavior and light-induced control forces for coupled parabolic shell. The effects of an actuator location as well as membrane and bending components under the control action have been analyzed considering the approximate spherical model. The parabolic membrane shell accuracy is being mathematically approximated and validated comparing the light induced control forces using approximate equivalent spherical shell model. The parabolic shell with kapton smart material and photostrictive actuators has been used to formulate the governing equation in the transverse direction. The Kirchhoff-Love assumptions are used to obtain the governing equation of shell with actuator. The mechanical membrane forces and bending moments for parabolic thin shell with actuator is used to analyze the dynamic effect. The results show that membrane control action is much more significant than bending control action. Photostrictive actuators oriented along circumferential direction (actuator-2) can give better control effect than actuators placed along longitudinal direction (actuator-1). The slight difference is observed between spherical and parabolic shell for a surface with focal length to the diameter ratio of 1.00 or more than unity. Space applications often have the shape of parabolical shells or shell of revolution, due to their required focusing, aiming, or reflecting performance. The present approach is focused that photostrictive actuators can effectively control the vibration of parabolical membrane shell. Also, the actuator's location plays an important role in defining the control force.

This paper proposes the new adaptive gain control monitoring sensor for the marine IT system. The marine IT system sensors make it possible to conduct search missions, record climate changes, provide pollution control, study marine life, conduct survey missions, tactical surveillance, and predict natural disturbances in the ocean. In this paper, the adaptive gain control circuit which changes its parameters according to the ambient noise situation for obtaining the precise location information of marine IT system sensor is developed and analyzed. The performance characteristics for ensuring the precise location information of marine system sensor is presented and analyzed. The theoretical and experimental studies have been carried out. The presented results from the above investigation show considerably excellent performance for the monitoring of the marine system.
This paper is concerned with the positioning control of a flexible arm system using H$_{\infty}$ control theory with optimum sensor location. Firstly, by virtue of the orthogonality of the flexible modes of the flexible arm a reduced order model of the tributed parameter system(DPS) representing the arm has formulated. The dynamical coupling between the flexible arm and DC motor has been considered to formulate an motor composite model. In order to achieve precise positioning with vibration attenuation, sensors have been optimally located. Finally, a robust H$_{\infty}$ controller was designed and the performance of the positioning system has been analyzed.d.
The aim of this paper is to provide a guide to those methods of train detection which are available, or are likely to become available, to the designer of train control or other relevant systems. In broad terms, train detection may be defined as the process of generating information which describes the location and movement of trains. Train detection information is difficult to define in isolation. Consider, for example, the train detection information required in a modern train control system. This may vary considerably : in a future high performance train control system, it might be necessary to know the precise position, direction of movement, speed, and possibly even the acceleration or braking, of all trains in the control area : in a less demanding application, it might be sufficient to know only the location of trains in terms of the occupation of sections of track.

The vision system model used for this study involves the six parameters that permits a kind of adaptability in that relationship between the camera space location of manipulable visual cues and the vector of robot joint coordinates is estimated in real time. Also this vision control method requires the number of cameras to transform 2-D camera plane from 3-D physical space, and be used irrespective of location of cameras, if visual cues are displayed in the same camera plane. Thus, this study is to investigate the optimal number of cameras used for the developed vision control system according to the change of the number of cameras. This study is processed in the two ways : a) effectiveness of vision system model b) optimal number of cameras. These results show the evidence of the adaptability of the developed vision control method using the optimal number of cameras.

This paper proposes a cluster-based PCS(Personal Communication Services) network architecture to support increased signaling and control traffic. The procedures are presented to serve the mjobility management and the efficient procesing of the call-control functional using distributed servers. Especially when call-setups are made within a cluster, this distributed servers. Especially when call-setup time and the amount of control traffic of H-HLS (High level Home Location Server) in the network as L-HLS(Low lever Home Location Server) serves the call on behalf of H-HLS. Performance and reliability of the architecture have been also cairried out.
There are several models for process quality assurance by quality system (ISO 9000), process capability analysis, acceptance control chart and so on. When a high level process capability has been achieved, it takes a long time to monitor the process shift, so it is sometimes necessary to develop a quicker monitoring system. To achieve a quicker quality assurance model for high-reliability process, this paper presents a model for process quality assurance when the fraction nonconforming is very small. We design an acceptance control chart based on variable quality characteristic and time-censored accelerated testing. The distribution of the characteristics is assumed to be normal or lognormal with a location parameter of the distribution that is a linear function of a stress. The design parameters are sample size, control limits and sample proportions allocated to low stress. These paramaters are obtained under minimization of the relative variance of the MLE of location parameter subject to APL and RPL constraints.
