  • This study is aimed to numerically evaluate a sound absorption performance of periodically folded barriers. Based on the formulation for sound absorption of a locally reacting surface in a periodic arrangement, variations of the sound absorption with parameters such as the folded width and depth are investigated. In comparison with the sound absorption of a conventional barrier with a flat surface, it is found that the periodically folded barriers can achieve a higher sound absorption especially in the low frequency range.

  • The kaolin deposits in Hadong-Sancheong area, have been formed by supergene weathering of anorthositic rocks including anorthosite, leucogabbro, and gabbro. Kaolin consists chiefly of halloysite(10$\AA$) and kaolinite with other minerals such as illite, vermiculite, plagioclase, hornblende, quartz amorphous materials(allophane and siica), goethite, and hematite. Goethite and hematite are the major coloring agents of the reddish brown and other colored kaolins. Other common accessory minerals are magnetite, ilmentite, anatase, gibbsite, I/S, C/V, chlorite, lithiophorite, and birnessite. Paragonite, dravite, laumontite, clinozoisite, muscovite, scolecite, stellerite are locally found. Al substitution of Fe in goethite and hematite decreases from the surface zone toward the deeper zone. The kaolin deposits show three horizontal zoning; the upper reddish brown, middle pink, and lower white zones. All the zones are characterized by somewhat different mineralogy. The factors for the formation of kaolin deposits in Hadong-Sancheong area are 1) the presence of anorthositic rocks, 2) the low flat or gentle topography, 3) the favorable climate, and 4) the long-continued preservation of kaolins with-out erosion.

  • Let W and V be manifolds of dimension m + 2, M a locally flat submanifold of V whose dimension is m. Let $f:W{\rightarrow}V$ be a homotopy equivalence. The problem we study in this paper is the following: When is f homotopic to another homotopy equivalence $g:W{\rightarrow}V$ such that g is transverse regular along M and such that $g{\mid}g^{-1}(M):g^{-1}(M){\rightarrow}M$ is a simple homotopy equivalence? $L{\acute{o}}pez$ de Medrano (1970) called this problem the weak h-regularity problem. We solve this problem applying the codimension two surgery theory developed by the author (1973). We will work in higher dimensions, assuming that $$m{\geq_-}5$$.

  • In this paper we consider the monotonicity of the lowest constant ${\lambda}_a^b(g)$ under the Ricci-Bourguignon flow and the normalized Ricci-Bourguignon flow such that the equation $$-{\Delta}u+au\;{\log}\;u+bRu={\lambda}_a^b(g)u$$ with ${\int}_{M}u^2dV=1$, has positive solutions, where a and b are two real constants. We also construct various monotonic quantities under the Ricci-Bourguignon flow and the normalized Ricci-Bourguignon flow. Moreover, we prove that a compact steady breather which evolves under the Ricci-Bourguignon flow should be Ricci-flat.

  • It is our goal in this study to present the structure of isotropic mean Berwald Finsler warped product metrics. We bring out the rich class of warped product Finsler metrics behaviour under this condition. We show that every Finsler warped product metric of dimension n ≥ 2 is of isotropic mean Berwald curvature if and only if it is a weakly Berwald metric. Also, we prove that every locally dually flat Finsler warped product metric is weakly Berwaldian. Finally, we prove that every Finsler warped product metric is of isotropic Berwald curvature if and only if it is a Berwald metric.

  • Hampyong Bay is a semienclosed and macrotidal bay which opens to the eastern Yellow Sea through a narrow inlet in the southwestern coast of Korea. In order to understand the tidal-flat sedimentation in the semienclosed setting, morphology, sediments, accumulation rate and sea cliff erosion were investigated in the tidal flat of Hampyong Bay. The tidal flat of Hampyong Bay lacks intertidal drainage systems, and generally shows the concave-upward profile whose relief is designated by marked morphological features such as high-tide beaches, intertidal sand shoals and tidal creeks. Surfacial sediments of the tidal flat mainly consist of mud, sandy mud, gravelly mud, gravelly sand and muddy gravel, thus showing the textural characteristics of multimodal grain-size distribution, poorly sorting and positive skewness. The sediments generally coarsen landward due to the increase in coarse fraction content. Sedimentary structures are deeply bioturbated, but parallel lamination and lenticular bedding are locally found in the mudflat near mean low water line. Annual accumulation rates across the tidal flat (along Line SM) average -5.2 cm/yr with a range of -45.8~+4.2 cm/yr, indicating that the tidal flat is erosional. In general, erosion rates of upper and lower tidal flat are higher than those of middle tidal flat. Seasonally, the erosion rates are much higher during spring and winter when dominant wind direction corresponds to the long axis of Hampyong Bay. Sea cliffs are eroded at a rate of 1.4 m/yr. The biggest sea cliff erosion generally occurs 1~2 months later after tidal flats were extensively eroded. Such erosions of tidal Oats and sea cliffs in the semienclosed bay setting are interpreted to be due to wind waves coupled with local sea-level rise.

  • Leaf surface structures were investigated in the Chinese juniper Juniperus chinensis by scanning electron microscopy. Adult scale leaves were collected from the tree, air-dried at room temperature, and sputter-coated with gold without further specimen preparation. Approximately fi ve stomata were locally distributed and arranged in clusters on the leaf surface. Stomata were ovoid and ca. 40 ${\mu}m$ long. The epicuticular wax structures of J. chinensis leaves were tubules and platelets. Numerous tubules were evident on the leaf regions where stomata were found. The tubules were cylindrical, straight, and ca. 1 ${\mu}m$ in length. They almost clothed the stomatal guard cells, and occluded the slit-shaped stomatal apertures. Moreover, the wax ridges were flat crystalloids that were connected to the surface by their narrow side. They did not have distinct edges, and their width/height ratio varied. In particular, the wax ridges could be discerned on the leaf regions where stomata were not present nearby. Since the wax ridges did not have distinct edges on their margin, they were identified as platelets. Instances were noted where platelets were oriented either parallel to each other or perpendicular to the cuticle surface. These results can be used in biomimetics to design the hierarchical structures for mimicking the plant innate properties such as hydrophobicity and self-cleaning effects of the leaf surface.

  • In this paper, the discharge characteristics of AC PDP, one of the leading technologies currently under development for large-area flat displays, is computed by using Finite Element Method(FEM) combined with Flux-corrected Transport(FCT) algorithm. Up to now, many simulations of AC PDP have been mainly done by Finite Difference Method(FDM). But we simulated the AC PDP by using FEM-FCT method which discretizes the region of interest with unstructured grids. FEM-FCT method can reduce the computational cost because of refining locally where the physical quantities have steep gradients and is more efficient in solving discharge problems, such as a AC PDP. Results are presented in Ne-Xe(4%) gas mixture for a gas pressure of 400 Torr and as the discharge proceeds, the space and time variations of the electron and ion densities, potential and wall charges on the dielectric are described. Results from our simulation by FEM-FCT are similar to those from simulation by FDM and are more efficient in computational cost reduction.

  • This research investigates the effect of natural dust accumulation on the glass cover of solar thermal energy conversion systems. Four similar, locally manufactured, flat plate solar collectors are used. All collectors are South oriented with tilt angle of $40^{\circ}$. The glass cover of one collector is kept clean of dust during the experimental period while the second collector is cleaned at the beginning of each month. The third collector is cleaned every two months while the fourth collector is kept un-cleaned throughout the experimental period of four months. The calculated parameters are the solar heat gain rates and the corresponding values of the thermal efficiency. The result of the present work indicates that the percentage of fractional reduction of the useful heat gain rate due to dust accumulation during a period of one and two months is 11.4% and 17.0%, respectively. The percentage decrease of thermal efficiency during the same duration periods is 4.0% and 6.1%, respectively. The percentage of fractional reduction of the useful heat gain rate due to dust accumulation during a period of three and four months is 27.8% and 31.9%, respectively. The percentage decrease of monthly thermal efficiency during the same duration period is 10.2% and 11.3%, respectively.

  • The pipe with a long-neck flange is widely used in power plants, chemical plants, and shipbuilding companies. New the pipe with a long-neck flange is manufactured by welding a thick flange to a pipe. But this long-neck flange pipe has some deflects in the welding region such as unfitting and local thermal fatigue, which weaken the strength around the neck of the flange. Moreover, after welding the flange, the contacting surfaces of the flange have to be machined flat. So, that is uneconomical. Therefore, to solve the above problems of the long-neck flange pipe, a new process, which has no defects around the flange neck, is required. In this study, three forming processes are suggested to get an enhanced long-neck flange. First suggested process consists of conical terming and flange forming. Second and third suggested processes consist of the bulging of a long pipe locally heated by induction coils and the flange forming. The differences between second and third suggestions are the thickness and local heating area of the pipe. That is, the thickness of the initial pipe of third suggestion is larger than that of the final product, and the local heating area is smaller than that of second suggestion. These three suggestions fur forming a long-neck flange are simulated by FE analyses with a commercial cede DEFORM 2D. Especially, the theoretical result of FE analysis on the first suggestion fur forming a long-neck flange is verified by the experiment with aluminum 6063 pipes. From the theoretical and experimental results, it is concluded that three suggested processes are very useful in order to manufacture the pipe with a long-neck flange without any deflects.
