Localization is the process of aligning the robot's local coordinates with the global coordinates of a map. A mobile robot's location is basically computed by a dead reckoning scheme, but this position information becomes increasingly inaccurate during navigation due to odometry errors. In this paper, the method of building a map of a robot's environment using ultrasonic sensor data and the occupancy grid map scheme is briefly presented. Then, the search and matching algorithms to compensate for the odometry error by comparing the local map with the reference map are proposed and verified by experiments. It is shown that the compensated error is not accumulated and exists within the limited range.
Autonomous navigation of an indoor mobile robot using the global ultrasonic system is presented in this paper. Since the trajectory error of the dead-reckoning navigation grows with time and distance, the autonomous navigation of a mobile robot requires to localize the current position of the robot, so that to compensate the trajectory error. The global ultrasonic system consisting of four ultrasonic generators fixed at a priori known positions in the work space and two receivers on the mobile robot has the similar structure with the well-known satellite GPS(Global Positioning System), and it is useful for the self-localization of an indoor mobile robot. The EKF(Extended Kalman Filter) algorithm for the self-localization is proposed and the autonomous navigation based on the self-localization is verified by experiments.

Early iterations of the existing Global Positioning System (GPS)-based or radio lateration technique-based vehicle localization algorithms suffer from flip ambiguities, forged relative location information and location information exchange overhead, which affect the subsequent iterations. This, in turn, results in an erroneous neighbor-vehicle map. This paper proposes an extended information overlap measure (EIOM) algorithm to reduce the flip error rates by exchanging the neighbor-vehicle presence features in binary information. This algorithm shifts and associates three pieces of information in the Moore neighborhood format: 1) feature information of the neighboring vehicles from a vision-based environment sensor system; 2) cardinal locations of the neighboring vehicles in its Moore neighborhood; and 3) identification information (MAC/IP addresses). Simulations were conducted for multi-lane highway scenarios to compare the proposed algorithm with the existing algorithm. The results showed that the flip error rates were reduced by up to 50%.
In wireless localization, several linear closed-form solution (LCS) methods have been investigated as a direct result of the drawbacks that plague the existing iterative methods, such as the local minimum problem and heavy computational burden. Among the known LCS methods, both the direct solution method and the difference of squared range measurements method are considered in this paper. These LCS methods do not have any of the aforementioned problems that occur in the existing iterative methods. However, each LCS method does have its own individual error property. In this paper, a hybrid LCS method is presented to reduce these errors. The hybrid LCS method integrates the two aforementioned LCS methods by using two check points that give important information on the probability of occurrence of each LCS's individual error. The results of several Monte Carlo simulations show that the proposed method has a good performance. The solutions provided by the proposed method are accurate and reliable. The solutions do not have serious errors such as those that occur in the conventional standalone LCS and iterative methods.
To compensate the drawbacks, a new localization method that estimates the global position of the mobile robot by using a camera set on ceiling in the corridor is proposed. This scheme is not a relative localization, which decreases the position error through algorithms with noisy sensor data. The effectiveness of the proposed localization scheme is demonstrated by the experiments.

Recently there has been an increasing interest in exploring the radio irregularity research problem in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Measurements on real test-beds provide insights and fundamental information for a radio irregularity model. In our previous work "LMAT", we solved the path planning problem of the mobile anchor node without taking into account the radio irregularity model. This paper further studies how the localization performance is affected by radio irregularity. There is high probability that unknown nodes cannot receive sufficient location messages under the radio irregularity model. Therefore, we dynamically adjust the anchor node's radio range to guarantee that all the unknown nodes can receive sufficient localization information. In order to improve localization accuracy, we propose a new 2-hop localization scheme. Furthermore, we point out the relationship between degree of irregularity (DOI) and communication distance, and the impact of radio irregularity on message receiving probability. Finally, simulations show that, compared with 1-hop localization scheme, the 2-hop localization scheme with the radio irregularity model reduces the average localization error by about 20.51%.
For the underwater localization, acoustic sensor systems are widely used due to greater penetration properties of acoustic signals in underwater environments. On the other hand, the good penetration property causes multipath and interference effects in structured environment too. To overcome this demerit, a localization method using the attenuation of electro-magnetic(EM) waves was proposed in several literatures, in which distance estimation and 2D-localization experiments show remarkable results. However, in 3D-localization application, the estimation difficulties increase due to the nonuniform (doughnut like) radiation pattern of an omni-directional antenna related to the depth direction. For solving this problem, we added a depth sensor for improving underwater 3D-localization with the EM wave method. A micro scale pressure sensor is located in the mobile node antenna, and the depth data from the pressure sensor is calibrated by the curve fitting algorithm. We adapted the depth(z) data to 3D EM wave pattern model for the error reduction of the localization. Finally, some experiments were executed for 3D localization with the fast calculation and less errors.
In this paper, we propose a new indoor localization method for indoor mobile robots using LiDAR. The indoor mobile robots operating in limited areas usually require high-precision localization to provide high level services. The performance of the widely used localization methods based on radio waves or computer vision are highly dependent on their usage environment. Therefore, the reproducibility of the localization is insufficient to provide high level services. To overcome this problem, we propose a new localization method based on the comparison between ceiling shape information obtained from LiDAR measurement and the blueprint. Specifically, the method includes a reliable segmentation method to classify point clouds into connected planes, an effective comparison method to estimate position by matching 3D point clouds and 2D blueprint information. Since the ceiling shape information is rarely changed, the proposed localization method is robust to its usage environment. Simulation results prove that the position error of the proposed localization method is less than 10 cm.
