Reconstructing underwater geometry in real time with forward-looking sonar is critical for applications such as localization, mapping, and path planning. Geometrical data must be repeatedly calculated and overwritten in real time because the reliability of the acoustic data is affected by various factors. Moreover, scattering of signal data during the coordinate conversion process may lead to geometrical errors, which lowers the accuracy of the information obtained by the sensor system. In this study, we propose a three-step data processing method with low computational cost for real-time operation. First, the number of data points to be interpolated is determined with respect to the distance between each point and the size of the data grid in a Cartesian coordinate system. Then, the data are processed with a nonlinear interpolation so that they exhibit linear properties in the coordinate system. Finally, the data are transformed based on variations in the position and orientation of the sonar over time. The results of an evaluation of our proposed approach in a simulation show that the nonlinear interpolation operation constructed a continuous underwater geometry dataset with low geometrical error.
As the availability of high-resolution satellite imagery increases, improvement of positioning accuracy of satellite images is required. The importance of orthorectified images is also increasing, which removes relief displacement and establishes true localization of man-made structures. In this paper, we performed automated extraction of building rooftops and total building areas within original satellite images using the existing building height database. We relocated the rooftop sin their true position and generated an orthorectified building layer. The extracted total building areas were used to blank out building areas and generate true orthographic non-building layer. A final orthorectified image was provided by overlapping the building layer and non-building layer. We tested the proposed method with KOMPSAT-3 and KOMPSAT-3A satellite images and verified the results by overlapping with a digital topographical map. Test results showed that orthorectified building layers were generated with a position error of 0.4m.Through the proposed method, the feasibility of automated true orthoimage generation within dense urban areas was confirmed.

In this paper the performance of a array invariant method is evaluated for source-range estimation in horizontally stratified shallow water ocean waveguide. The method has advantage of little computationally effort over existing source-localization methods. such as matched field processing or the waveguide invariant and array gain is fully exploited. And. no knowledge of the environment is required except that the received field should not be dominated by purely interference This simple and instantaneous method is applied to simulated acoustic propagation filed for testing range estimation performance. The result of range estimation according to the SNR for the underwater impulsive source with broadband spectrum is demonstrated. The spatial smoothing method is applied to suppress the effect of mutipath propagation by high frequency signal. The result of performance test for range estimation shows that the error rate is within 20% at the SNR above 10dB.
In this paper we have implemented a 3-D PL (Position Location) system to estimate the 3-dimensional position of a moving object in underwater environments. In this research, we let four sensors fixed in different Positions and moving sensorsto communicate with each other to find the 3-dementianal positions for both the fixed and moving objects. Using this we were also able to control the moving object remotely. When finding the position, we calculated the norm of the Jacobian matrix every iteration in the Newton algorithm. Also by using a different initial value for calculating the solution when the norm became higher than the critical value and the solution from the inverse matrix became unstable, we could find a more reliable position for the moving object. The proposed algorithm was used in implementing a DSP system capable of real-time position location. To verify the performance, experiments were done in a water tank. As a result we could see that our system could located the position of an object every 2 seconds with a error range of 5cm.

We consider design factors for a SQUID sensor array to construct a 52-channel magnetocardiogram (MCG) system that can be used to measure tangential components of the cardiac magnetic fields. Nowadays, full-size multichannel MCG systems, which cover the whole signal area of a heart, are developed to improve the clinical analysis with high accuracy and to provide patients with comfort in the course of measurement. To design the full-size MCG system, we have to make a compromise between cost and performance. The cost is involved with the number of sensors, the number of the electronics, the size of a cooling dewar, the consumption of refrigerants for maintenance, and etc. The performance is the capability of covering the whole heart volume at once and of localizing current sources with a small error. In this study, we design the cost-effective arrangement of sensors for MCG by considering an adequate sensor interval and the confidence region of a tolerable localization error, which covers the heart. In order to fit the detector array on the cylindrical dewar economically, we removed the detectors that were located at the corners of the array square. Through simulations using the confidence region method, we verified that our design of the detector array was good enough to obtain whole information from the heart at a time. A result of the simulation also suggested that tangential-component MCG measurement could localize deeper current dipoles than normal-component MCG measurement with the same confidence volume; therefore, we conclude that measurement of the tangential component is more suitable to an MCG system than measurement of the normal component.

Surface currents were observed by high-frequency (HF) radars off the Keum River estuary from December 2008 to February 2009. The dataset of observed surface currents had data gaps due to the interference of electromagnetic waves and the deteriorating weather conditions. To fill the data gaps an optimal interpolation procedure was developed. The characteristics of spatial correlation in the surface currents off the Keum River estuary were investigated and the spatial data gaps were filled using the optimal interpolation. Then, the temporal and spatial distribution of the interpolated surface currents and the patterns of interpolation error were examined. The correlation coefficients between the surface currents in the coastal region were higher than 0.7 because tidal currents dominate the surface circulation. The sample data covariance matrix (C), spatially averaged covariance matrix with localization ($C^G_{sm}$) and covariance matrix fitted by an exponential function ($C_{ft}$) were used to interpolate the original dataset. The optimal interpolation filled the data gaps and suppressed the spurious data with spikes in the time series of surface current speed so that the variance of the interpolated time series was smaller than that of the original data. When the spatial data coverage was larger (smaller) than 70% of the region, the interpolation error produced by $C^G_{sm}$ ($C_{ft}$) was smaller compared with that by C.

In wireless sensor networks, the positioning scheme using received signal strength (RSS) has been widely considered. Appropriate estimation of path-loss exponent (PLE) between a sensor node and an anchor node plays a key role in reducing position error in this RSS-based positioning scheme. In the conventional researches, a sensor node directly uses the PLEs measured by its nearest anchor node to calculate its position. However, the actual PLE between a sensor node and the anchor node can be different from the PLE measured by its nearest anchor node. Thus, if a sensor node directly uses the PLEs measured by its nearest anchor node, the estimated position is different from the actual position of the sensor node with a high probability. In this paper, we describe the method how a sensor node estimates PLEs from the anchor nodes of interest by itself and calculates its position based on these self-estimated PLEs. Especially, our proposal suggests the mechanism to iteratively calculate the PLEs depending on the estimated distances between a sensor node and anchor nodes. Based on the recalculated PLEs, the sensor node reproduces its position. Through simulations, we show that our proposed positioning scheme outperforms the traditional scheme in terms of position error.

The accuracy of small and low cost CCD camera is insufficient to provide data for precisely tracking unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs). This study shows how UAV can hover on a human targeted tracking object by using CCD camera rather than imprecise GPS data. To realize this, UAVs need to recognize their attitude and position in known environment as well as unknown environment. Moreover, it is necessary for their localization to occur naturally. It is desirable for an UAV to estimate of his attitude by environment recognition for UAV hovering, as one of the best important problems. In this paper, we describe a method for the attitude of an UAV using image information of a maker on the floor. This method combines the observed position from GPS sensors and the estimated attitude from the images captured by a fixed camera to estimate an UAV. Using the a priori known path of an UAV in the world coordinates and a perspective camera model, we derive the geometric constraint equations which represent the relation between image frame coordinates for a marker on the floor and the estimated UAV's attitude. Since the equations are based on the estimated position, the measurement error may exist all the time. The proposed method utilizes the error between the observed and estimated image coordinates to localize the UAV. The Kalman filter scheme is applied for this method. its performance is verified by the image processing results and the experiment.
This study analyzes the early satellite mission marine fog detection results from Geostationary Ocean Color Imager-II (GOCI-II). We investigate optical characteristics of the GOCI-II spectral bands for marine fog between October 2020 and March 2021 during the overlapping mission period of Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) and GOCI-II. For Rayleigh-corrected reflection (Rrc) at 412 nm band available for the input of the GOCI-II marine fog algorithm, the inter-comparison between GOCI and GOCI-II data showed a small Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) value (0.01) with a high correlation coefficient (0.988). Another input variable, Normalized Localization Standard (NLSD), also shows a reasonable correlation (0.798) between the GOCI and GOCI-II data with a small RMSE value (0.007). We also found distinctive optical characteristics between marine fog and clouds by the GOCI-II observations, showing the narrower distribution of all bands' Rrc values centered at high values for cloud compared to marine fog. The GOCI-II marine fog detection distribution for actual cases is similar to the GOCI but more detailed due to the improved spatial resolution from 500 m to 250 m. The validation with the automated synoptic observing system (ASOS) visibility data confirms the initial reliability of the GOCI-II marine fog detection. Also, it is expected to improve the performance of the GOCI-II marine fog detection algorithm by adding sufficient samples to verify stable performance, improving the post-processing process by replacing real-time available cloud input data and reducing false alarm by adding aerosol information.
For the purpose of utilization in 3-D conformal radiotherapy and whole body radiosurgery, the Whole Body 3-Dimensional Topographic Radiation Therapy System has been developed. Whole body frame was constructed in order to be installed on the couch. Radiopaque catheters were engraved on it for the dedicated coordinate system and a MeV-Green immobilizer was used for the patient setup by the help of side panels and plastic rods. By designing and constructing the whole body frame in this way, geometrical limitation to the gantry rotation in 3-D conformal radiotherapy could be minimized and problem which radiation transmission may be altered in particular incident angles was solved. By analyzing CT images containing information of patient setup with respect to the whole body frame, localization and coordination of the target is performed so that patient setup error may be eliminated between simulation and treatment. For the verification of setup, the change of patient positioning is detected and adjusted in order to minimize the setup error by means of comparison of the body outlines using 3 CCTV cameras. To enhance efficiency of treatment procedure, this work can be done in real time by watching the change of patient setup through the monitor. The method of image subtraction in IDL (Interactive Data Language) was used to visualize the change of patient setup. Rotating X-ray system was constructed for detecting target movement due to internal organ motion. Landmark screws were implanted either on the bones around target or inside target, and variation of target location with respect to markers may be visualized in order to minimize internal setup error through the anterior and the lateral image information taken from rotating X-ray system. For CT simulation, simulation software was developed using IDL on GUI(Graphic User Interface) basis for PC and includes functions of graphic handling, editing and data acquisition of images of internal organs as well as target for the preparation of treatment planning.
