This paper presents an approach for evaluating directionality effects for both wind speeds and wind loads in hurricane-prone regions. The focus of this study is on directional wind loads on low-rise structures. Using event-based simulation, hurricane directionality effects are determined for an open-terrain condition at various locations in the southeastern United States. The wind speed (or wind load) directionality factor, defined as the ratio of the N-year mean recurrence interval (MRI) wind speed (or wind load) in each direction to the non-directional N-year MRI wind speed (or wind load), is less than one but increases toward unity with increasing MRI. Thus, the degree of conservatism that results from neglecting directionality effects decreases with increasing MRI. It may be desirable to account for local exposure effects (siting effects such as shielding, orientation, etc.) in design. To account for these effects in a directionality adjustment, the factor described above for open terrain would need to be transformed to other terrains/exposures. A "local" directionality factor, therefore, must effectively combine these two adjustments (event directionality and siting or local exposure directionality). By also considering the direction-specific aerodynamic coefficient, a direction-dependent wind load can be evaluated. While the data necessary to make predictions of directional wind loads may not routinely be available in the case of low-rise structures, the concept is discussed and illustrated in this paper.

Unconventional structures are getting more popular in recent days. Large-span roofs are used for many structures, such as airports, stadiums, and conventional halls. Identifying the pressure distribution and wind load acting on those structures is essential. This paper offers a collaborative study of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and wind tunnel tests for assessing wind pressure distribution for a building with a combined slender curved roof. The hybrid turbulence model, Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (IDDES), simulates the open terrain turbulent flow field. The wind-induced local pressure coefficients on complex roof structures and the turbulent flow field around the structure were thus calculated based upon open terrain wind flow simulated with the FLUENT software. Local pressure measurements were investigated in a boundary layer wind tunnel simultaneous to the simulation to determine the pressure coefficient distributions. The results predicted by CFD were found to be consistent with the wind tunnel test results. The comparative study validated that the recommended IDDES model and the vortex method associated with CFD simulation are suitable tools for structural engineers to evaluate wind effects on long-span complex roofs and plan irregular buildings during the design stage.
The two-stage numerical model was used to study the relation between three-dimensional local wind model, advection/diffusion model of random walk method and second moment method on Pusan coastal area. The first stage is three dimensional time-dependent local wind model which gives the wind field and vertical dirrusion coefficient. The second stage is advection/diffusion model which uses the results of the first stage as input data. First, wind fields on Pusan coastal area for none synoptic scale wind showed typical land and sea breeze circulation, and convergence zone occured at 1200LST in northern of domain, in succession, moved northward of domain. Emissions from Sinpyeong industrial district were trasnported toward the inland by sea breeze during daytime, and reached the end part of domain about 1800LST. During nighttime, emissions return to sea by land breeze and vertical diffusion also contributes to upward transport. In order to use this model for forecast of air pollution concentration on the Pusan coastal area, it is necessary that computed value must be compared with measured value and wind fields model must also be dealt in detail.
The two-stage numerical model was used to study the relation between three-dimensional local wind seal area for Korean peninsula. The first stave is three dimensional time-dependent local wind model which elves the wind field and vertical diffusion coefncient. The second stage is advection/duusion model which uses the results of the first stage as input data. First, wand fields on Korean peninsula for none synoptic scale wand showed typical land and sea breeze circulation, and the emitted particles were transported by sea breeze for daytime, emissions return to sea by land breeze for nighttime.
At the altitudes above 3km, the wind is three to four time faster and less variable than at the current MW sized wind turbine hub height of around 100m. In addition, power generation from wind turbines installed on the ground is intermittent because local wind conditions are affected by local topography and artificial structures. The wind energy researchers and engineers are now looking for revolutionary ideas to utilize high altitude wind resources in-creasing the capabilities of wind turbine installations. This article presents and discusses several concepts for wind energy exploitation from wind at high altitudes. The concepts presented in this paper make use of lifting bodies, called wings or kites, connected to a tether that stetches into the higher regions of the atmosphere.

In this work, wind tunnel tests of pressure measurements are carried out to assess the global aerodynamic interference factors, the local wind pressure interference factors, and the local lift spectra of an square high-rise building interfered by an identical cross-sections but lower height building arranged in various relative positions. The results show that, when the interfering building is located in an area of oblique upstream, the RMS of the along-wind, across-wind, and torsional aerodynamic forces on the test building increase significantly, and when it is located to a side, the mean across-wind and torsional aerodynamic forces increase; In addition, when the interfering building is located upstream or staggered upstream, the mean wind pressures on the sheltered windward side turn form positive to negative and with a maximum absolute value of up to 1.75 times, and the fluctuating wind pressures on the sheltered windward side and leading edge of the side increase significantly with decreasing spacing ratio (up to a maximum of 3.5 times). When it is located to a side, the mean and fluctuating wind pressures on the leading edge of inner side are significantly increased. The three-dimensional flow around a slightly-shorter disturbing building has a great effect on the average and fluctuating wind pressures on the windward or cross-wind faces. When the disturbing building is near to the test building, the vortex shedding peak in the lift spectra decreases and there are no obvious signs of periodicity, however, the energies of the high frequency components undergo an obvious increase.
In urban area, thermal pollution associated with heat island phenomena is generally regarded to make urban life uncomfortable. To overcome this urban thermal pollution problem, urban planning with consideration of urban climate, represented by the concept of urban ventilation lane, is widely practiced in many countries. In this study, the prevailing wind ventilation lane of a local winds in Daegu during the warm climate season was investigated by using surface wind data and RAMS(Reasonal Atmospheric Model System) simulation. The domain of interest is the vicinity of Daegu metropolitan city(about 900 $km^{2})$ and its horizontal scale is about 30km. The simulations were conducted under the synoptic condition of late spring with the weak gradient wind and mostly clear sky. From the numerical simulations, the following two major conclusions were obtained: (1)The major wind passages of the local circulation wind generated by radiative cooling over the mountains(Mt. Palgong and Mt. Ap) are found. The winds blow down along the valley axis over the eastern part of the Daegu area as a gravity flow during nighttime. (2)After that time, the winds blow toward the western part of Daegu through the city center. As the result, the higher temperature region appears over the western part of Daegu metropolitan area.
The energy production of offshore wind farms plays an important role in expanding renewable energy. However, the development of offshore wind farms faces many challenges due to its incompatibility with marine environments and its social acceptability among the local community. In this study, we reviewed the marine environmental impact assessment status of offshore wind farm development projects for 2012-2019 in South Korea. A total of nine projects were selected for this study, all of which experienced considerable conflict with local fisheries resources. To appropriately respond to the underlying challenges faced by offshore wind farm development and in order to better support decision-making for future impact assessment, our findings identified: i) a need for adequate preliminary investigation and technical examination of fisheries resources; ii) a need to assess and estimate the impact of underwater noise, vibration, and electromagnetic waves on fisheries resources during wind farm construction and operation; and iii) a need for a bottom-up approach that allows for communication with local stakeholders and policy-makers to guarantee the local acceptability of the development.
We have examined the influence of local wind on occurrence of fog at two inland areas, Chuncheon and Andong, in Korea. The surrounding topography of two inland areas shows significant difference: Chuncheon is located in the basin surrounded by ridges with north-south axis while Andong is located in the valley between the ridges with east-west axis. Occurrence of fog shows maximum in October at both sites but high occurrence of fog at Chuncheon is also noted in the winter. Occurrence of fog at Andong in October is much larger than that at Chuncheon. High occurrence of fog in October is due to favorable synoptic condition for fog formation such as weak wind, clear day and small depression of the dew-point. Fog occurrence at Chuncheon is closely related to very weak wind condition where wind speed is less than $0.5m\;s^{-1}$. The weak wind at Chuncheon in winter is due that pressure driven channeling wind (southerly) cancels out partly downslope northerly flow during nighttime. On the other hand, fog at Andong occurs well when wind is southeasterly which is thermally forced flow during nighttime. Southeasterly provides cold, moist air from the narrow valley to Andong during nighttime, leading to favorable condition for formation of fog.
This paper presents how to determine AEP(Annual Energy Production) by a small wind turbine in DuckjeokDo island. Evaluation of AEP is introduced to make a self-contained island including renewable energy sources of wind, solar, and tidal energy. To determine the AEP in DuckjeokDo island, a local wind data is analyzed using the annual wind data from Korea Institute of Energy Research firstly. After the wind data is separated in 12-direction, a mean wind speed at each direction is determined. And then, a small wind turbine power curve is selected by introducing the capacity of a small wind turbine and the energy production of the wind turbine according to each wind direction. Finally, total annual wind energy production for each small wind turbine can be evaluated using the local wind density and local energy production considering a mechanical energy loss. Throughout the analytic study, it is found that the AEP of DuckjeokDo island is about 2.02MWh/y and 3.47MWh/y per a 1kW small wind turbine installed at the altitude of 10 m and 21m, respectively.
