  • The experiment was carried out to investigate the adaptability of freezing process with thirteen strawberry varieties cultivated in Suwon, Pusan and Chunju area. Six of these were local varieties and the others were varieties imported from the United States of America. Each strawberries variety was analysed chemically to determine value of soluble solids, acidity (calculated as citric acid) and deepness of color. Frozen products were prepared by a general method adding sugar to $28^{\circ}\;Brix$. Local varieties Haengok, Bokuh, Keikwan and Daehak No. 1 were not suitable for making into frozen products because of excessive white color in their centers. Blakemore, an imported variety, was best as to color. Chemical analysis showed that imported varieties have higher acidity, and lower content of soluble solids. In a sensory test conducted by fifteen members of Agriculture and Fishery Development Corporation, deeper colors of strawberries did not receive a generally favorable response, and it was found that strawberry colors favored by the America were not liked by Korean well.

  • For the forage sorghum breeding, 22 American M.S. lines and 58 inbred lines were sown in pots, and 80 local varieties in field in 1978. Their agronomic characteristics were as follow; 1. All of the tested lines/varieties were headed from 22nd to 26th of July. Varieties of 69-86% were headed from 17th to 31st of July. All of lines/varieties began their flowering within 3-5 days after heading and native varieties had wide variance in heading and flowering. 2. The plant height of M.S. lines, inbred lines and local varieties were 86-114 cm, 81-190 cm and 142-289 cm, respectively. Leaf blade length of M.S. lines and inbred lines were ranged from 52.2 to 53.4 cm and local varieties 70.7 cm. Average stem diameter of M.S. lines and inbred lines were ranged from 8.81 to 7.74 mm and local varieties 11.3 mm. 3. Stem diameter were significantly correlated with leaf length and leaf blade width. The internode length were also significantly correlated with plant height. Especially, all characteristics in local varieties were correlated with each other.

  • We quantitatively analyzed eight varieties of 6-year-old red ginseng, including four local landraces from the Inje, Geumsan, Jinan, and Punggi regions and four new varieties, Chunpoong, Yunpoong, Guempoong, and K-1, for 10 ginsenosides, acidic polysaccharide, crude polyacetylene, and total polyphenol content to find out which varieties are most suitable for producing red ginseng. Most of the new varieties contained more ginsenosides than the local landraces. While the acidic polysaccharide content of Geumsan red ginseng was lower than that of the others, its crude polyacetylene content was the highest, with a mean of 33.99%. The Inje, Geumsan, and Jinan red ginseng had a significantly higher total polyphenol content than the others.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the varietal differences in leaf senescence during ripening stage and its relation to grain yield of rice. During grain filling period leaf senescence was evaluated by SPAD readings (an indirect indicator of chlorophyll content) for 74 varieties including local, improved domestic, and introduced varieties in the field condition. Leaf senescence was varied greatly among 74 varieties. Jodongji and Dadajo known as local rice varieties had significantly lower SPAD value than the other varieties and became senescent rapidly. However, SPAD value of the flag leaf and 2nd leaf of SNU-SG1 were much higher than the other varieties and leaves of SNU-SG1 also showed a tendency of delayed senescence compared to the other varieties. There were significantly positive correlation between cumulated SPAD value of upper leaf(flag leaf and 2nd leaf) during 35 days after heading and grain yield divided by sunshine hour during 40 days of grain filling and compensated for temperature effect, and cumulated SPAD value of the 4th leaf showed negative correlation with the yield. That is, the delayed senescence of the upper leaves and the rapid senescence of lower leaves were positively associated with grain yield increase.

  • Experiments were carried out to classify the ecotypes and maturity groups of soybean varieties, and to make clear the relationships among these ecotypes, maturity groups and some characteristics in the growing and ripening process of soybean varieties in Korea. Soybean varieties used as the material were 138, 57 varieties collected from Japan, America and Canada and 81 local varieties of Korea. These varieties were grown in the Experimental Farms, College of Agriculture, Seoul National University, Suwon, Korea and Chinju Agricultural College, Kyungsang Namdo, Korea. Seed sowing was conducted at 8 times from April15 to July 29, at 15 day-intervals, in 1962. The classification methods of ecotypes and maturity groups applied in this study, and the results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. Ecotypes were classified from the standpoint of the periods from emergence to flowering, the shortened ratio of days from sowing to flowering by delayed sowing, and the periods from flowering to maturity(as shown in Table A). 2. All varieties wer classified into 10 ecotypes of Ia$_1$, Ib$_1$, IIa$_2$, IIb$_1$, IIb$_2$, IIIb$_1$IIIb$_2$, IIIc$_1$and IIIc$_2$ symbols. Korean local varieties, however, belong to 6 ecotypes of IIb$_1$, IIb$_2$, IIIb$_1$, IIIc$_2$, IIIc$_1$ and IIIc$_2$, respectively(table 1). 3. Durations from sowing to maturity were from 120 to 190 days in April sowing plots of all varieties. From the standpoint of the durations, maturity groups were classified into 9 groups from group I, extreme early, to group IX, extreme late, but our local varieties belong to 5 maturity groups of III, IV, V, VI and VII symbols, respectively(Table 2). 4. Kinds of ecotypes and maturity groups, and the number of soybean varieties belonging to those are as shown in Table B. 5. In this study, it was observed that there were some close relations between these ecotypes and maturity groups (Table 3,4), and among the ecotypes, maturity groups and some other characteristics in the growing and ripening process of the soybean varieties(Table 5). 6. Furthermore, it was also observed that the kinds of ecotypes and maturity groups of recommended varieties in the southern Korean provinces are more numerous than those of the northern provinces in Korea.

  • Korean local and introduced varieties were classified by the cluster analysis of correlation and taxonomic distance based on nineteen growth characters. 1. Thirty six varieties can be classified into three groups(I, II, III) by WVGM (weighted variable group method) 2. Major characters for classifying cultivars were days to flowering, number of leaves, leaf length, stem diameter and width of midrib: the five characters seemed to be useful in monothetic classification. 3. Korean varieties were similar to oriental, and japanese varieties to taiwan. 4. WVGM was more accurate and meaningful than classification by WPGM (weighted paired group method) and reticulate diagram of correlation. 5. Characteristics of each group: Group I closely related to many leaves, late of maturity and broad leaf type, Group II related to medium leaves, late of maturity and narrow leaf type, Croup 19 related to few leaves, early of maturity and medium leaf type respectively.

  • In order to classify the ecotypical and maturing groups 136 Korean local and 4 Japanese Perilla varieties were sown at Suwon on May 20, 1972, and investigations were made on days to flowering, days to maturing and growth duration. Results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. Ecotype was classified from 6 groups with combination of the long and short duration from sowing to flowering and maturing period. The classified symbols of groups were Ia, Ib, IIa, IIIa, and IIIb. I: long duration. to flowering II: medium duration to flowering III: short duration to flowering a: long duration to maturing b: short duration to maturing Korean local varieties were distributed 3 ecotypes of IIa, IIb and IIIa, however, Japanese varieties did 2 ecotypes of IIa and IIb, respectively. 2. Maturing group was classified from 3 groups with long (I), medium (II), and short (III) growth durations. Korean local varieties belong to II and III groups but Japanese varieties belong to I and II groups, respectively. 3. Three were highly significant positive correlation (0.685) between ecotypical and maturing group. Ecotype was more related with days to flowering and growth duration, however, maturing group was related with days to flowering, days for maturing, and growth duration. Korean local varieties, more distributed into ecotype than maturing group, were attributed to differences of environmental conditions and cultural practices at different provinces.

  • Little is known about the genetic variability in lutein content for soybeans (Glycine max L.) cultivated in Korea. Therefore, the objective of this study was to screen high quality soybean cultivars for lutein content. The lutein contents of 23 recommended varieties, 56 sauce varieties, 44 sprout varieties, and 40 local varieties were determined by saponification followed by reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). We found that IT No. 153398 and 22789, originating from sauce and local varieties, respectively, contained significantly higher amounts of lutein as compared to the other 161 samples. Moreover, relevant quantitative differences were found among the samples, which had lutein contents ranging from 83 to $402{\mu}g/100g$ in the recommended varieties, from 39 to $778{\mu}g/100g$ in the sauce varieties, from 52 to $589{\mu}g/100g$ in the sprout varieties, and from 106 to $861{\mu}g/100 g$ in the local varieties, respectively. In summary, this study provides reliable lutein data for soybean cultivars that can be used for breeding studies and the development of functional foods.

  • The solid and protein yields and extraction properties of color pigments were compared for 7 varieties of soybeans during soaking in water at $4-100^{\circ}C$. The varieties investigated were Paldal, Danyeob, Jangbaek, Baegun, Jangyeob and 2 cultivars of Local 1 and Local 2. The Hunter values showed that Jangbaek was the highest in 'L' value while other varieties except Local 1 and Local 2 were comparatively high in 'L' value. Local 1 and Local 2 were low in 'b' value. The yields of solid and protein during water extraction showed that most of solids and proteins were recovered with three consecutive extractions. The cumulated yields were 73.2 % for solid and 83.2 % for protein. Extraction of color pigments of seed coats in $4-100^{\circ}C$ water showed that the extraction rate was very much dependent on extraction time and temperature. A linear relationship of A=aT+b was obtained for equilibrated absorbance(A) and extraction temperature(T). The activation energy calculated from initial extraction rate of cole. pigments and temperature had two different values of low($4-60^{\circ}C$) and high($60-100^{\circ}C$) temperature range.
