The purpose of this experiment was to see the effect of local basis weight on the local strain during changing moisture content in handsheets. The averaged strain value of the whole size of paper sheet did not give more valuable information to explain non uniform deformation in the paper sheet. The combination of intact strain measurement system KISA (Linear Image Strain Analysis) and local basis weight measurement method using a scanner made it possible to compare local basis weight with local strain to explain moisture induced paper deformation . Usually higher basis weight local area showed higher moisture induced local strain. However, the hygro-induced strain values were highly affected by the behavior of neighbor local areas. Well distributed local basis weight paper would give more uniform local strains than those of non-uniformed local basis weight paper.

Fatigue crack initiation lives of round cylindrical notch specimen were investigated. Firstly, local strain approximation methods, such as the modified incremental Neuber's rule and the modified incremental Glinka's equivalent strain energy density(ESED) rule, were used to get multiaxial stress and strain state components at the notch tip. Based on the history of local stress and strain, multiaxial fatigue models were used to obtain fatigue crack initiation lives. Because the solution of Neuber's rule and Glinka's ESED rule make the upper and lower bound of local strain approximations, fatigue crack initiation lives are expected to place between life predictions by two local strain approximations. Experimental data were compared with the fatigue crack initiation life prediction results.
The failure behavior of RC structure was exceedingly affected by the size and the local strain distribution of the failure zone due to the strain localization behavior on the tension softening materials. However, it is very difficult to quantify and assess the local strain occurring in the failure zone by the conventional test method. In this study, image processing technology, which is available to measure the strain up to the complete failure of RC structures, was used to estimate the local strain distribution and the size of failure zone. In order to verify the reliability and validity for the image processing technology, the strain transition acquired by the image processing technology was compared with strain values measured by the concrete gauge on the uniaxial compressive specimens. Based on the verification of image processing technology for the uniaxial compressive specimens, the size and the local strain distribution of the failure zone of deep beam was measured using the image processing technology. With the results of test, the principal tensile/compressive strain contours were drawn. Using the strain contours, the size of the failure zone and the local strain distribution on the failure of the deep beam was evaluated. The results of strain contour showed that image processing technology is available to assess the failure behavior of deep beam and obtain the local strain values on the domain of the post-peak failure comparatively.

In order to assess the integrity of pipes with local thinning area, the plastic strain as well as the elastic strain at the root of thinned region are required particularly when fluctuating load is applied to the pipe. For estimating elastic-plastic strain at local wall thinning area in a straight pipe under tensile load, an estimation model with idealized fully circumferential constant depth wall thinning area is proposed. Based on the compatibility and equilibrium equations a nonlinear estimation equation, from which local elastic-plastic strain can be determined as a function of pipe/defect geometry, material and the applied strain was derived. Estimation results are compared with those from detailed elastic-plastic finite element analysis, which shows good agreements. Noting that practical wall thinning in nuclear piping has not only a circular shape but also a finite circumferential length, the proposed solution for the ideal geometry is extended based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional numerical analysis of pipes with circular wall thinning.

In this paper, local ratcheting behavior of 1045 steel plates with circular cutout was investigated. Experimental tests were carried out by a Zwick/Roell HB 100 servo hydraulic machine. In order to measure the local strain at notch root, a data acquisition system with strain gauge was used. Various notch diameters and distances of strain gauges mounted from the notch root were found influential in the magnitude of local ratcheting strain. It was found that the local maximum principal stress plays a crucial role in increasing the local plastic deformation. Numerical simulation was done by ABAQUS software using nonlinear isotropic/kinematic hardening model. Material parameters of hardening model were attained from several stabilized cycles of flat specimens subjected to symmetric strain cycles. The nonlinear kinematic hardening model along with the Neuber's rule was employed to assess local ratcheting at the notch root of steel plates. The results of the numerical simulations agreed closely with those measured values in this study. Both ratcheting progress and mean stress relaxation occurred simultaneously at the notch root.

The residual stresses and. distortions of structures by welding exert negative effect on the safety of railroad structures. This investigation performs a thermal elasto-plastic analysis using finite element techniques to evaluate residual stresses in butted-welded joint. Considering this initial residual stresses, local stress and strain at the critical location (weld toe) during the loading were analyzed by elastic plastic finite element analysis. Fatigue crack initiation life and fatigue crack propagation life of butt-welded specimen were predicted by local strain approach and Neuber's role and Paris law. It is demonstrated that fatigue life estimates by local strain approach closely approximate the experimental results.
Fatigue fracture is the cyclic fracture phenomena at a very small local area near a crack tip. Therefore, the detailed quantitative experimental analysis about local cyclic strain distribution near a crack tip is prerequisite In order to make an effective parameter able to account for fatigue fracture problems. However, there are few reports on detailed quantitative experimental analysis of a local cyclic strain distribution near a crack tip, because of experimental difficulties. In this study, the distribution of local fatigue strains near a fatigue crack tip was in detail studied using by fine dot grid strain measurement method. From these results, a single parameter, which characterizes local fatigue strain field, was proposed. In addition, this parameter was applied to evaluate the fatigue crack propagation rate.

In this paper, a stress-strain model for high-strength confined concrete is proposed using compressive fracture energy. In the compression test performed by author in Reference [6], an acrylic bar with strain gauges was embedded in the center of the specimen to measure the local strain distribution. It was found from the test that the local strain measurement by this acrylic rod is very effective. The local fracture zone length was defined based on the local strain distribution measured by the acrylic rod. Specifically, it was defined as the length where the local strain increases more than twice of the strain corresponding to maximum stress. In addition, the stress-strain relationship of confined concrete with compressive fracture energy is proposed on the assumption that the amount of energy absorbed by the compressive members subjected to the given lateral confining pressure is constant regardless of the aspect ratio and size. The proposed model predicts even results from other researchers accurately.
Bursting during tube hydroforming is preceded by localized necking. The retardation of the initiation of necking is a means to enhance hydroformability. Since high strain gradients occur at the necking sites, a decrease in local strain gradients is an effective way to retard the initiation of necking. In the current study, the expansion at potential necking sites was intentionally restricted in order to reduce the strain gradient at potential necking sites. From the strain distribution obtained from FEM, it is possible to determine strain concentrated zones, which are the potential necking sites. Prior to the hydroforming of a trailing arm, an incompressible material(such as lead) is attached to the tube where the strain-concentrated zone would contact the die. Due to the incompressibility of lead, the tube expansion is locally restricted, and the resultant strain extends to adjacent regions of the tube during hydroforming. After the first stage of hydroforming, the lead is removed from the tube, and the hydroforming continues to the final targeted shape without any local restriction. This method was successfully used to fabricate a complex shaped automotive trailing arm that had previously failed during traditional hydroforming fabrication.

We have carried out a preliminary study to search for the new fracture mechanics parameter which can effectively estimate the fatigue life. In this study, the distribution of local fatigue strains near a fatigue crack tip was detailedly revealed using by fine dot grid strain measurement method. From these results, a single parameter (.DELTA.A), which characterize local fatigue strain field, was nearly proposed by the authors.
